Reading the Story. It’s the customary bedtime practice every parent would feel fearful — being asked to read the same book for many many times. But 1 the constant repetition might be boring for mum or dad, it is the best way for children to learn new words, according to research. The findings suggest parents are wasting money by spending a fortune on huge book collections in the hope 2 they will inspire their little ones. Instead, a small selection of favourites such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar will achieve far more.
Dr. Jessica Horst of the University of Sussex’s WORD Lab devised an experiment 3 (check) how quickly three-year-olds could recognize and recall six new words. The children 4 (visit) three times in a week. One group heard the same story three times back-to-back each time and another was read three different stories. All had the same number of new words 5 appeared the same amount of times. When researchers returned a week later, they found the children who heard the same story over and over had typically learned 3.6 of the new words, while those 6 (expose) to a variety of stories remembered only 2.6. They also noted the “repetition” group learned at a faster rate than those in the “variety” group.
Dr. Horst said, “We are showing that less is more, to a point. And, obviously, the more times you read to a child and the more books you have will help him or her. But you 7 (not need) to go crazy and buy every single Thomas the Tank Engine book. 8 (read) the same books over and over again helps.” Speaking of the previous studies, we have found one in three parents don’t read to their children 9 putting them to bed. Yet 30 minutes of one-on-one reading periods can improve reading age 10 nearly two years in less than five months.

Voluntourism first emerged at scale in the 1990s. Since then, the industry has grown rapidly and now offers a wide variety of options. Volunteers can find themselves building houses in Honduras, teaching children in Morocco, or protecting endangered brown bears in central Italy. The sector is 11 by organizations that connect communities in need with volunteers. Some are charities or non-profits, while others are traditional businesses meeting and capitalizing on a healthy demand.
Done diligently and ethically (符合道德地), voluntourism can have a(n) 12 impact on both recipients and volunteers, says Alex Tarrant, co-founder of Pod Volunteer. The organization, 13 in the early 2000s, focuses on animal welfare. Its volunteers may care for rescued dogs in Thailand and protect elephants in Namibia.
Global Vision International is one of the bigger 14 in the market. Over the past 25 years, it has placed around 35,000 volunteers in more than 100 locations around the world. Its long-running cooperation with the Seychelles government has involved 1,000 participants in ocean 15 initiatives.
Not all interactions, however, are as mutually 16 . When making money and doing good come together, it is not surprising that ethical issues can arise. If a company lacks ethics, the profit margins (利润空间) in voluntourism can be “very, very high,” says Xavier Font, an expert in sustainability marketing. This is partly because costs are low while participants are often willing to pay more for their trips. There can also be an unfair power 17 between voluntourism operators and the often desperate projects they partner with. Since companies do not have to 18 their costs, they can easily hide profits and take advantage of the situation.
Another 19 is that willing but poorly prepared volunteers often repeat work that previous volunteers have already done. A worker at a voluntourism organization reportedly overheard a teacher say: “If one more volunteer comes in and teaches the children to sing ‘head, shoulders, knees, and toes,’ I’m going to scream.”
Despite these problems, voluntourism is largely a force for good, concludes Sallie Grayson, co-founder of the non-profit People and Places. “The vast majority of volunteers want to do good, and it’s up to us to 20 that they can,” she said. “Well-matched, well-placed volunteers can make a real difference, I’m still convinced of that.”

Basic research, driven by curiosity, freedom and imagination, provides the groundwork for all applied research and technology. And just as we have to break the endless cycle of Band-Aid fixes to roads and rails, long-term investments in 21 are vital. Curiosity-driven basic research has brought truly 22 transformations, such as the rapid growth of computer-based intelligence and the discovery of the genetic basis of life. It also 23 new tools and techniques that spread throughout society, such as the World Wide Web, originally developed for physicists to cultivate scientific cooperation.

Why Exercise Does Not Always Make Us Happier
A.complicates B.counts C. drive D.enjoyment E. essential F. imposed
G. initial H. instrumental I. sustain J. translate K. outweighed
People often assume that exercise is automatically good for mental health. Move more, the familiar advice goes, and you will feel better. Yet recent research has begun to qualify this apparently simple formula. The psychological 11 behind exercise may matter almost as much as the exercise itself.
Researchers distinguish between motives that are 12 and motives in which the activity itself is rewarding. People who exercise for a result beyond the activity may run to lose weight, improve a medical condition or satisfy an expectation 13 by family, peers or society. In each case, the value of exercise lies mainly in the result it is supposed to produce. Although a goal-directed motive can get people moving, it rarely 14 as a positive experience in the long run.
This difference becomes important when the 15 enthusiasm fades. A person who exercises only to meet an external standard may find it difficult to 16 the habit once progress slows. The activity begins to feel like a test that must be passed rather than a practice that can be valued in its own right. By comparison, internal motivation is more closely connected with 17 , a sense of competence and the feeling that one is acting by choice.
The short-term discomfort of training can be 18 by these pleasant psychological experiences. They may also 19 into measurable improvements in mood and life satisfaction. Such benefits can extend to other areas of well-being, including better sleep, greater confidence and more satisfying social interactions. The point is not that every exercise session must be pleasant. Training can be tiring, repetitive and even uncomfortable. What matters is whether people retain a sense of agency while doing it.
This finding also 20 the popular idea that exercise should be treated mainly as a tool for weight loss. When movement is valued only for its visible results, that narrow purpose may undermine a person’s relationship with physical activity. A more effective strategy is to adapt the routine to the individual’s interests, abilities and circumstances. Someone who dislikes crowded gyms may respond better to cycling, dancing or a regular walk with friends.

These clips are standard in platforms like TikTok, and are designed to keep attention locked in. This design matters because it encourages repeated, often automatic 22 . Users don’t need to decide what to watch next, as the platform decides for them. Over time, this may shape how attention, mood, and motivation are 23 , especially in children and adolescents whose brains are still developing.
As concern grows about the mental health impacts of social media, researchers have increasingly turned their attention to short-form video. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis by Nguyen and colleagues pulled together 70 studies to 24 how this type of content use is linked to mental health, cognition, and well-being. Rather than focusing on a(n) 25 study, meta-analyses pool results across many studies to better understand overall effects and who is at greatest risk.
Across the studies included in the review, higher levels of short-form video use were 26 associated with poorer mental health outcomes, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Importantly, these associations were strongest when use was frequent, emotionally 27 or felt difficult to control. These 28 reflect how and why young people interact with these platforms, not simply how long they use them.
Beyond mental health, this review also examined how short-form video use relates to cognitive functioning, including executive functioning abilities that are 29 for success in school and work. Across studies, a consistent pattern emerged, particularly in young people: heavier and more compulsive short-form video use was linked to poorer cognitive outcomes. The fast-paced, highly 30 , and repetitive nature of short-form video may 31 the ability to focus on slower, effortful tasks and place additional strain on developing cognitive systems.
The results suggest that short-form video platforms 32 youth mental health and cognition during adolescence, a particularly 33 period in development. The results highlight the danger of these videos and highlight the need to 34 the platforms’ designs and algorithms to protect youth well-being and cognition, as well as undertake measures to limit use and 35 . Several countries, such as Australia and the United Kingdom, have imposed bans on social media for teens under 16 years of age, with other countries considering the same measures.

Prolonged sitting rightly has a bad reputation. A review in 2012 concluded that the most sedentary were more than twice as likely as the least to have diabetes, and also faced a much higher risk of premature death. Another, in 2015, found that sitting for long 11 was associated with “harmful health outcomes regardless of physical activity”. Three years after that, an analysis of news articles in a British journal found hundreds of pieces which referred to claims 12 sitting to smoking, though that is considered overblown.
Hence the appeal of standing desks and, more recently, “active seats”: chairs and stools that tilt, wobble or rock to force 13 postural adjustments. Is either actually healthier?
An analysis in 2018 found standing at a desk burned just nine more calories per hour than sitting. Nor are the cardiovascular (心血管的) 14 impressive. A review in 2020 mentioned nine trials involving 877 people. Participants stood about 1.3 hours more a day and were followed for roughly four months. Body fat and blood-sugar control improved slightly, but blood pressure, insulin, and cholesterol did not.
Furthermore, standing is not without its 15 . Those who stood for more than two hours a day had a higher risk of varicose veins (静脉曲张), perhaps because of 16 of blood in the legs. What matters far more is movement. A study of nearly 482,000 adults in 2024 found that just 15-30 minutes of extra daily exercise could erase most of the 17 mortality (死亡) risk associated with sitting at work.
Desk-bound workers may therefore wonder if active seating can make a difference. Some findings are encouraging. In a trial at Georgia Southern University, 20 adults performed reading and typing tasks on an ordinary chair, an exercise ball and a seat 18 on top of an inflatable bladder (充气囊). Energy expenditure on the ball was similar to normal sitting. But on the bladder, participants’ heart rates and calorie burn rose by 6-13% and 19-40% 19 . In the end, there does seem to be a lesson here: the real 20 is not between sitting and standing, but between remaining still and moving.

Why Saying “Late Bloomer” Is Wrong
Doree Shafrir considers herself to be a late bloomer. She got married at 38, had her first child at 41, and generally sees herself as having been late “to finding the kind of work I 21 like to do.” While the road has not always been smooth, the Los Angeles-based author, 44, now feels gratitude for her journey, along with a new outlook on the 22 that she once felt she was missing. “These goals are relatively arbitrary (武断的) and culturally prescribed,” Shafrir says. “I now see that the things I saw as ‘mistakes’ were just another part of my story.”
Shafrir views her memoir, Thanks for Waiting: The Joy (& Weirdness) of Being a Late Bloomer, as a “gentle corrective to the idea that we’re supposed to do things on a schedule.” Yet it is a notion that is 23 . Many of us feel-consciously or otherwise-that our paths should 24 a rigid timeline of professional and personal milestones. We may judge ourselves negatively if we hit these milestones “late,” in part because of a societal tendency to 25 youthful achievement.
Yet plenty of people find professional fulfillment, financial prosperity, or rewarding relationships within their own time frames. In fact, research shows that people today are increasingly likely to 26 major life events at a later age than previous generations.
Given that we are living longer, switching 27 more often, and seeking more meaning in our work, it makes sense for more people to “bloom” later in life. And as they do, the stigma (污名) of succeeding at an older age-including the idea that it is more surprising than doing so young—has become an outdated view of age and achievement. The concept of late bloomers can also be toxic to those who do succeed later in life. Such people may 28 with feelings of failure, negative self-comparison to others, and even the sense that they have been forgotten.
Removing the pressure to succeed within a given timeline is good for our mental health. It can also enable the people we currently label “late bloomers” to 29 the distinct successes that come with the achievements that are made later in life. Many of these strengths and skills are a direct result of spending more time on self-discovery, learning and even failure. “Late bloomers may have faced 30 challenges on their pathway to achievement, leading them then to develop more resilience (适应力),” says Chia-Jun Tsay, an associate professor at University College London. “Such people may be more 31 to adapt to difficult circumstances.” Beyond increased 32 , a longer road to success also brings opportunities to discover and cultivate meaningful values and passions that are personally resonant (引起共鸣的), rather than what society pushes us towards.
Clearly, we are 33 for a shift in how we view achievements in terms of age. We simply can’t afford to maintain a bias that leads to 34 a whole band of the population’s untapped (未开发的) potential. Shafrir learned this lesson in her own time. However, she hopes that future generations will be 35 from the age-related achievement pressure she faced-particularly as a woman.

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

It 24 the sharpest minds on the toughest challenges, and its products are widely used by industry and society. No one can exclusively capture its rewards — it is a truly 25 good. The path from basic research to applications is not one-directional and linear, but rather it is complex and 26 . The 27 technologies enable even more fundamental discoveries, such as quantum mechanics, which has led to computer chips and other inventions that are responsible for a significant part of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).
To 28 the full potential of human intellect and imagination, we need to balance short-term expectations with long-term investment. Just as a financial expert would never 29 giving up a retirement fund to enrich an already sufficient checking account, we need to advocate for a balanced portfolio (投资组合) of short- and long-term research initiatives. 30 , driven by decreasing funding, against a background of economic uncertainty, and ever shortening time cycles, research is becoming 31 directed toward short-term goals that may address current problems but miss out on huge advances in the long term.
It is human to 32 necessities in times of stress. But investing in basic research, just like saving for retirement, is a prerequisite (先决条件) for 33 welfare, innovation and societal progress. Long-term investments in basic research are crucial and lead to an even higher goal: the global 34 of accepting the scientific culture of accuracy, truth seeking, critical questioning and dialogue, healthy skepticism, 35 for facts and uncertainties, and wonder at the richness of nature and the human spirit.

Life is a continuous journey of learning. From the moment we are born, we begin the process of discovering the world 1 us. As we grow, our thirst for knowledge and understanding only increases, 2 (lead) us to pursue different forms of education and experiences 3 help us expand our horizons and grow as individuals.
In the early years of our lives, we engage in the process of learning through play and exploration. Through toys and games, we learn about cause and effect, social interactions, and how to get problems 4 (solve). As we progress into our formative years, we begin to hone in on more academic skills like reading, writing, and math. These foundational building blocks set us up for success in school and beyond.
As we transition into adulthood, our focus shifts towards career-related fields and lifelong learning becomes increasingly important. In this stage of our lives, we begin to specialize in areas that align with our interests and talents, 5 it is technology, healthcare, education, or another profession. We also begin to embrace the idea 6 learning is a never-ending process and a lifelong journey.
Lifelong learning not only benefits our professional development but also our personal growth. It helps us 7 (maintain) a youthful mindset, stay connected to the world, and continues to push us to grow as individuals. We can embrace this concept by seeking out new hobbies or 8 (continue) education courses that introduce us to new concepts and ideas.
Learning is a critical component of human growth and development. It allows us to broaden our horizons, gain new skills, and pursue our passions. Lifelong learning is not just a phase 9 a mindset that we should embrace throughout our lives. As we continue to journey through life, let us never stop exploring and learning 10 new.

Why Exercise Does Not Always Make Us Happier

G. initial H. instrumental I. sustain J. translate K.

Short-form videos have become one of the dominant ways young people interact with social media. These are clips lasting seconds up to a few minutes, powered by personalized algorithms that are deeply immersive and precisely 21 to users’ interests, with endless autoplay and infinite scroll providing no stopping cues.

The Art of Persuasion
Persuasion is the art of influencing others’ thoughts, feelings and actions. It’s about convincing people to see things from your perspective, adopt your ideas or take specific actions. 1 you’re negotiating a business deal, advocating a cause or simply trying to get your point across, persuasion plays a crucial role.
Employers place a great value on employees 2 (possess) persuasion skills because they can impact several aspects of job performance. Besides, teamwork and leadership rely heavily on the power of persuasion to get things done. 3 persuasion skills, employees may not be as committed to 4 makes an organization’s vision valuable, or convinced of its long-term mission. Effective use of persuasion skills will not only help get your coworkers excited about your ideas, it’ll also help you motivate them to achieve a common goal.
In order to learn the art of persuasion at the workplace, you need to understand the situations 5 conflicts arise and how to reach agreements. Good communication is the first step in effective persuasion, but equally important is the capacity 6 (ground) in logic and reasoning. Before you can get somebody on-board with your goal, you should help them understand why they should pursue it. Using visual aids to back up your ideas 7 (prove) effective in helping illustrate your ideas better.
Successful persuasion skills are based on your ability to have positive interactions and maintain meaningful relationships with people. In order to sustain those relationships, you must be able to work in their best interests as well. Your coworkers are 8 (likely) to disagree with you when they succeed alongside. The more they achieve and the greater progress they make, the more they trust your judgement and strength.
We persuade and get persuaded every day. A vast majority of people favour cooperation and teamwork over traditional organizational structures; no one likes to be told what to do or 9 (push) around. Therefore, organizations and leaders 10 adopt powerful persuasion skills to bring about necessary changes.
