B Deng Jiaxian was a Chinese physicist, known as the Father of China's Atomic Bomb (原子弹). Born in Anhui Province, Deng entered the National Southwestern Associated University in 1941 and went to America for further physics study. He learned a great deal and gained plenty of professional knowledge. After graduation, he refused well‑paid jobs and superb research conditions offered by American universities and government. Instead, he returned to Beijing in 1950 to devote himself to China’s nuclear research (核研究). At that time, Deng met huge difficulties. There was little reference material for nuclear research, and skilled researchers were in great shortage. He worked together with young college graduates. They even did calculations with abacuses (算盘). One calculation stage would take nearly one month, and some key data needed repeating nine times within about one whole year. For almost eight years, Deng worked hard at the Gobi Desert nuclear testing site in northwest China. In October 1964, under Deng's leadership, China successfully tested its first atomic bomb. In June 1967, China's first hydrogen bomb test also achieved great success. In 1979, during one test, the parachute (降落伞) failed. An atomic bomb hit the ground without exploding. Deng fully knew the high risk of dealing with the broken bomb parts. "You are young; you must not take this risk," he told his workmates. He went forward and collected the broken pieces in person. Deng’s wife, a medical doctor, learned what he had done. She asked him to go back to Beijing to receive a full‑body medical check. Tests showed deadly nuclear radiation (辐射) had greatly harmed his body. Even so, he chose to go back to the testing base and kept solving technical problems. In 1986, 62‑year‑old Deng Jiaxian passed away because of radiation damage. As a national hero, he received the Two Bombs and One Satellite Merit Medal in 1999. ( )25. What does the underlined word "superb" in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Peaceful. B. Excellent. C. Different. D. Difficult. ( )26. What can we infer from the passage? A. A recent survey among middle school students in London shows over 60% of teens have joined volunteer activities at least once. Volunteer work covers different kinds of tasks. Some volunteers help look after homeless animals in animal shelters. Some work in community libraries to organize books for local readers. Others visit old people’s homes to chat with the elderly and help clean rooms. Why do teenagers spend their spare time volunteering? Most students say volunteering brings them real growth. When working as volunteers, they learn communication skills and teamwork. They get chances to meet different people and see the world from new sides. Besides, helping others gives them a strong feeling of satisfaction. However, some parents worry volunteer work will take too much study time. Teachers give practical advice: teenagers do not need long‑hour volunteer jobs. One or two hours every weekend is enough. What really matters is the attitude of taking part, not how much time they spend. Schools also encourage student volunteering. Many schools regard volunteer experience as important part of students’ social practice education. ( )29. What can we know from the survey in London? A. Few teenagers love doing volunteer jobs. B. Local villagers call it the "slow train". For more than twenty years, it serves as cheap and convenient transport connecting mountain villages and cities. Today it keeps creating new changes for local people’s life. For villagers, this train becomes a moving open‑air market. Villagers get on board carrying baskets full of farm produce. Bright red peppers, fresh green vegetables, golden corn and sweet fruits fill the carriages. Passengers buy and sell goods right on the train. Every trip toward town is warm and busy. Besides that, the slow train turns into a moving stage for cultural heritage (遗产). Many visitors prefer this green mountain train instead of fast high‑speed trains. Local folk artists are invited on the train to show traditional artworks. Travellers can enjoy beautiful Miao embroidery (苗族刺绣). Sometimes calligraphy lovers write lucky wishes for passengers. All these activities make the train a lively cultural classroom for visitors to experience local folk culture closely. High‑speed trains make people’s trips much faster. While running at low speed, the slow train speeds up local people’s dreams in its own special way. It carries villagers’ harvest, traditional folk culture, and bright hopes for better future life. ( )33. What goods can passengers buy on the slow train? A. Green fresh vegetables. B. Hand‑woven empty baskets. C. Red greeting paper. D. Golden coins. ( )34. Why do lots of visitors choose the slow train rather than high‑speed trains? A. Because seats on the slow train are much softer. B. Because they can enjoy local traditional culture on it. C.
