Nowadays, teachers are trying creative new ways to fire students’ imagination. Balci is a primary‑school teacher from Turkey. She makes use of AI tools to generate images showing her students’ future appearances according to each kid’s dream job.
In one popular online video, Balci asked her students about their future dreams. Then she used AI to create pictures for them. For example, little Ali dreamed of becoming an astronaut, so the AI picture showed him wearing a spacesuit for space travel. Mark hoped to work as a doctor, and the AI image presented him in a doctor’s white uniform. Those pictures showed students what they might look like in the future. The kids felt surprised and joyful seeing themselves as astronauts, doctors, teachers, pilots, artists or football players.
Balci called every student up one by one to show them their personal pictures as a surprise. “Kids shared their dream jobs with me, and I made these images for them. They were really excited when seeing their future selves. Their joy also brought me great happiness,” Balci said.
This creative teaching method is quite valuable. These pictures help students picture their bright future and encourage them to pursue their dreams bravely. Balci wishes all her students could make their wonderful dreams come true one day.
( )5. What did Balci do with AI to encourage her students?
A. She shot short videos recording students’ daily school life.

I got an email from my foreign pen‑pal the other day. He sent me many photos: street signs, shop notices and public warnings from his city. “Try to work out their meanings,” he wrote. I spent the whole afternoon studying these photos on my desk.
The first sign read “Thanks for standing in line while others exit. Keep it up!” From the sentences and arrows, I guessed the word “exit” meant “get out”. When other people walk out, we should wait patiently in line. “Keep it up” means “Continue doing this good behaviour”.
The second photo showed: “Dispose of or take your garbage with you. Leaving trash is a NO‑GO!” This one was harder. I knew “garbage” and “trash” stood for waste things. I looked up “dispose of” in an English‑English dictionary and learned it means “throw away”. People should throw rubbish into bins or take waste away. So “Leaving trash is a NO‑GO!” means you must not drop rubbish here.
The last photo was a community notice “NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH COMMUNITY”. I already knew “neighborhood” and “community”, but I could not understand the whole phrase. I turned to my English teacher for help over the phone. She explained local people in this community work together to keep their neighbourhood safe.
In this way — by guessing meanings, checking dictionaries and asking for help — I worked out all the signs. This is such a fun way of English learning, and I hope to get more similar material.
( )9. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How the writer learns English through real‑life public signs.
B. How foreigners protect their community safety.
C. Advice on how to write emails to foreign pen‑pals.
D. Different kinds of street signs in big foreign cities.
( )10. Which sentence can replace “Leaving trash is a NO‑GO!”?
A. You cannot run away right now.
B. You must not carry rubbish bins.
C. You must not throw rubbish everywhere.
D. You shouldn’t leave your friends quickly.
( )11. How did the writer understand “NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH COMMUNITY”?
A. By calling his English teacher for help. B. By guessing the words directly.
C. By sending emails to his pen‑pal. D. By looking everything up in a dictionary.
( )12. What will the writer probably do later?
A. Draw new public signs for his own city.
B. Ask his pen‑pal for more real‑life sign photos.
C. Make notice boards for local community shops.
D. Give thanks to his neighbourhood neighbours.

Can you learn swimming only by reading books or watching others swim? Of course not. You need to get into water and practice again and again. Learning English works in exactly the same way. Plenty of practice plays the most important role.
For English beginners, listening and speaking are very necessary. Kids in English‑speaking countries listen much before they start to speak. We can listen to English radio programmes. Even if you only catch several words, do not feel worried. Just relax yourself.
Lots of learners are good at listening but dare not open their mouths. They fear making mistakes. However, we also make mistakes when speaking our mother language. Don’t be afraid. Speak aloud bravely. If you cannot find partners to talk with, try speaking to yourself in English. The more you practise speaking, the fewer mistakes you will make.
For junior high students, reading and writing become more important. Choose books you are interested in. Much reading helps build your language sense, which is of great value. Keeping English diaries improves writing ability. You may also write articles and send them to English magazines. Don’t fear failure.
Actions speak louder than thoughts. Let’s keep practising, and we are sure to make great progress in English.
( )13. Why does the writer talk about swimming in Paragraph One?
A. To teach readers basic swimming skills.
B. To show swimming is a meaningful sport.
C. To introduce the core opinion of English learning.
D. To compare the difficulty of swimming and English study.
( )14. For Grade‑9 students, what matters more in English learning?
A. Listening and speaking. B. Never feeling afraid of mistakes.
C. Reading and writing. D. Talking to yourself every single day.
( )15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. You must understand every word when listening to radio.
B. Reading lots of favourite books helps build language sense.
C. We can only improve spoken English by talking with partners.
D. Mistakes mean you are not good at learning foreign languages.
( )16. What is the best title for this article?
A. Easier Said Than Done B. Why Should We Learn English
C. Good Ways to Learn English Well D. How to Develop Reading Habits
