Black Americans like Ed Dwight were not given the same opportunities as other Americans. But he didn’t notice. During his early years, his eyes were on the single-engine private planes near his family’s farm and the stars in the night sky, which inspired in him a longing for exploration and opened the door to possibilities.
As soon as he could, Dwight applied to join the Air Force, but there was one challenge. Dwight was a quarter-inch too short to pass the physical examination to become a fighter pilot. His teammates came up with a plan to put cardboard in his socks. Though the plan failed, a commanding officer was so impressed by Dwight’s determination that he passed him to join the USAF flight training program. Dwight didn’t waste the opportunity, pouring himself into demanding training. “I got to work a little earlier and stayed a little later. I was taking other people’s missions, trying to build up flying time.”
In 1961, Dwight’s excellence caught the attention of America’s newly formed space agency, NASA. He was chosen to become an astronaut in training — the first Black pilot to reach such heights. But in a painful turn, he was eventually not selected for the team that was launched into space. It was disheartening. But as his mother taught him, challenges are simply goals not yet achieved, and anything is possible.
That “anything” came true in a full-circle moment in 2023, when Dwight got a very unexpected, life-changing phone call. That call resulted in Ed Dwight boarding a Blue Origin rocket ship on May 19, 2024, to break the bounds (束缚) of Earth’s gravity and become the world’s oldest living astronaut — at 90 years old.
4. What started Ed Dwight’s dream of flying?
A. Farming experience. B. Desire for freedom.
C. Curiosity about the sky. D. Unfair opportunities.
5. Why was Ed Dwight finally accepted by the Air Force?
A. His strong will moved the officer. B. The cardboard plan worked.
C. His teammates recommended him. D. He excelled in the examination.
6. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Dwight was the first Black pilot. B. Dwight’s mom influenced his mindset.
C. Dwight lost hope after being rejected. D. Dwight’s height prevented his selection.
7. Which of the following can best describe Ed Dwight?
A. Creative and intelligent. B. Hard-working and positive.
C. Energetic and humorous. D. Open-minded and generous.
C
Nature words like river, moss and blossom have appeared less frequently in books over the past years. This decline, according to a study by professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.
The computer modelling in the study also predicts an “extinction of experience”, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an “orientation(倾向)” towards the natural world. This is consistent with findings from other studies, which identify adult nature connectedness as the strongest predictor of whether a child will become close to nature.
Richardson said that when he tested policy and urban environmental changes in the model he was surprised at the scale of the changes required to restore the connection to nature. Increasing biodiverse green spaces in a city by 30% might look like significant positive progress for wildlife and people but Richardson said his study suggests a city might need to be 10 times greener to turn around declines in nature connection.
Efforts to simply encourage adults to engage with nature are often insufficient for lasting change. More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.
Richardson said the scale of societal change required might not be as challenging as it appeared. A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. “Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,” he said. “The key is to make these gains last across generations,” he added.
8. What change has Richardson traced in his study?
A. Nature words have disappeared from books. B. People have less direct contact with nature.
C. Urbanisation has damaged wildlife habitats. D. Parents spend more time outdoors with kids.
9. What might cause future generations to have “extinction of experience” in the model?
A. They are raised away from nature. B. They can’t adapt to changes in nature.
C. High-rise buildings fill neighbourhoods. D. Schools offer few nature science lessons.
10. What is a most effective solution to the issue according to the text?
A. Advancing long-term policies. B. Launching eco-friendly campaigns.
C. Focusing on raising adults’ awareness. D. Enlarging green space in certain areas.
11. Richardson mentioned the study on people in Sheffield to show ________.
A. nature contact varies from city to city B. people’s living habits are hard to change
C. a new way to measure nature time is needed D. small efforts help improve contact with nature
D
Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed with tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 to 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat that you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.”
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
13. What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A. How sponges are exactly structured. B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment. D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
14. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive.
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
15. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The classification of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Research into applications of bacteria.

The day arrived for the son to return from his studies. When the son came and met his father, the old man looked into his eyes and felt great disappointment. “What have you learnt my son?” he asked. “I have learnt everything there was to be learnt, Father,” the son answered. “But have you learnt what cannot be taught?” asked the Father. “Go, my son and learn what cannot be taught,” said the old man.
The young man went back to his master and asked his master to teach him what couldn’t be taught. “Go away to the mountains with these four hundred sheep and come back when they are one thousand,” said the master.

He became quiet, like the sheep and great wisdom and humility (谦逊) came to him.

C 5. A 6. B 7. B

B 9. A 10. A 11. D
根据文章第一段内容“This decline, according to a study by professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.(据德比大学的Miles Richardson教授的一项研究显示,这种下降趋势反映了他所追踪到的更为广泛的变革:220年来的城市化记录、社区内野生动物的减少,以及父母不再将与自然的接触方式传递给子女的现象。)”
根据文章第二段内容“The computer modelling in the study also predicts an ‘extinction of experience’, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an ‘orientation’ towards the natural world.(该研究中的计算机模型还预测会出现“体验灭绝”现象,未来的世代将会逐渐失去对自然界的认知,因为自然环境已不再存在于日益密集的居民区之中,而父母们也不再向孩子们传递对自然世界的“认知导向”。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第四段内容“More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.(更为有效的是那些能在孩子幼年时期就建立与自然联系的措施,比如为幼儿设立的森林学校。研究表明,政府针对早期教育和城市规划的改革举措必须在未来 25 年内持续推行。一旦这种联系得以确立,它就能实现自我维持。)”可知,更有效的方式是从小培养亲近自然的连接,政府调整早期教育和城市设计的举措,必须在未来25年持续推行,即长期政策才是有效的解决方案。故选A项。
根据文章末尾段内容“A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. ‘Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,’ he said.(一项针对谢菲尔德市民的研究发现,他们平均每天在自然环境中停留的时间仅为4分36秒。“将这个时间增加 10 倍,人们每天就能在户外度过 40 分钟 —— 这或许已经足够了。”)”提及谢菲尔德市民每天只在自然环境中停留4分36秒,而只需增加十倍到四十分钟就够了,即,不用巨大改变,小努力就能提升亲近自然的时间。故选D项。
C 13. B 14. A 15. A

根据第二段第二句“He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. (他发现,海绵上那些大小各异的孔隙对于促进细菌生长至关重要。)”可知,这位生物学家发现不同大小孔隙的海绵对促进细菌生长起着重要作用,也就是他发现了什么能促进细菌生长。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第一句话“In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 to 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. 故选A项。
根据最后一段“This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case. (事情还不止如此。如果危险的细菌碰巧来到了海绵上,海绵特殊的构造会使它成为这些细菌生长和繁殖的理想场所。而且有证据表明情况确实如此。)”可知,有证据表明危险细菌会在海绵上生长繁殖,所以接下来很可能会讨论细菌威胁的证据具体是什么。故选A项。

Once upon a time, there was an old man in Basra whose only job was caring for and loving his only son. His son was a handsome young man. The old man invested all his money in his son’s education. The young man was away for a few years and got an education at a well-known university.
The young man went to the mountains and became a shepherd (牧羊人). There for the first time he met a silence. He had no one to talk to. The sheep did not understand his language. In his desperation (绝望), he would talk to those sheep but they would look back at him as if to say he was stupid. Slowly but surely, he began to forget all his worldly knowledge and his pride. He became quiet, like the sheep and great wisdom and humility (谦逊) came to him.
At the end of two years when the number of the sheep had grown to one thousand, he returned to his master. “Now you have learnt what cannot be taught,” said the master.

根据第一段中“The old man invested all his money in his son’s education.(老人把他所有的钱都invested到儿子的教育中。)”
根据第三段中师父的话“Go away to the mountains with these four hundred sheep and come back when they are one thousand(带着这四百只羊去山里,等它们变成一千只时再回来)”可知,师父让年轻人带着四百只羊去山里牧羊,等羊群增至一千只时再回来,以此方式教育他。
根据第四段中“He had no one to talk to. The sheep did not understand his language. In his desperation (绝望), he would talk to those sheep but they would look back at him as if to say he was stupid.(他没有人可以说话。羊听不懂他的语言。在绝望中,他会对那些羊说话,但羊只是回头看着他,仿佛在说他很愚蠢)”可知,年轻人在山中无人交流,感到绝望,因此和羊说话。
【61题详解】
考查开放性题目。此题要求表达是否同意师父的教育方式并解释。答案合理即可,需控制在规定词数内。例如:同意,因为这种体验式教育能让人在沉默中学会谦逊和智慧。故参考答案为:Yes, I agree. It teaches humility and wisdom through experience.
