B At St. Francis High School in La Canada, Calif, there’s something to be said about math teacher Jim Connor. The truth is, Connor can be a bit of a drudge. But the 70-year-old man says he’s not here to entertain his students. “It drives me crazy when people say school should be fun,” he says. “I mean, it’s nice if it could be, but you can’t make school fun.” And for years, the kids thought that’s all there was to him—until last November, when senior Pat McGoldrick learned they didn’t know the half of him. Pat was in charge of a student blood drive and had just come to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for a meeting. And he says it was strange: whenever he told someone he went to St. Francis High School, they all said, “Oh, you must know Jim Connor. Isn’t he wonderful?” “It was disbelief, really,” Pat says. “It was almost kind of finding this alter ego (另一面) that he has.” Inside the blood donor center, Pat found a plaque (匾牌) listing all the top blood donors at the hospital, including the record holder, Jim Connor. Then he learned something even more unbelievable: whenever Connor isn’t torturing kids with calculus (微积分), he’s cuddling (拥抱) sick babies. Three days a week for the past 20 years, Jim has volunteered at the hospital, stepping in to become involved in an activity when parents can’t, to hold, feed and comfort the children when their parents can’t do that. “They tend to calm for him,” Nurse Erin says. “They tend to relax with him. They fall asleep with him.” “I just like them and relate to them somehow,” Connor says. Connor has never been married; he has no kids of his own. But he has fallen hard for these babies. “I’ve always respected him, but now it’s to an even different degree—really to the point where I try to follow his example,” Pat says. “He’s the epitome (典范) of a man of service.” 4. What do we learn from paragraph 2? A. School can never be fun B. Connor thinks education is for all. C. Connor’s students drive him crazy. D. Connor is highly demanding. 5. What did Pat find out about Mr Connor? A. Mr Connor used to be a very strict teacher. B. Mr Connor donated blood as well as his time. C. Mr Connor had a unique teaching philosophy. D. Mr Connor was awarded for his love toward babies. 6. Which of the following is true about Mr. Connor? A. He works two shifts every day for a living. B. He has the ability to connect with those kids he holds. C. He has his alter ego in the eyes of his students all the time. D. He falls hard for those sick kids so he decided not to have his own. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Tough teacher has a soft heart B. Bonding with babies in need of love C. Everybody keeps something under his hat D. A real lesson is life through learning calculus C Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers. Their study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present. The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful, it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes. Ten healthy volunteers were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs. The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo. The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a verve activity(神经活动), which cause coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness. 8. According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______. A. cannot be as effective as codeine B. can be a more effective cure for coughs C. cannot be separated from chocolate D. can be harmful to people’s health 9. What was used in the experiment to cause coughing? A. Capsaicin. B. Codeine. C. Theobromine. D. Placebo. 10. We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment _____. A. were patients with bad coughs B. suffered little side effects C. received standard treatments D. were divided into the three groups 11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Codeine: A New Medicine B. Cough Treatment: A Hard Case C. Chocolate May Cure Coughs D. Theobromine Can Cause Coughs D Pixar’s movie, Turning Red, is about puberty (青春期). We often think about puberty and the hard things it brings. Our bodies and feelings change in ways that can feel out of our control. Turning Red shows the importance of being true to oneself during this time. The film tells the story of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese student. She’s got confidence and enjoys playing with her friends. However, she often hides her true self in front of her protective and strict mother. This all changes when Mei reaches puberty. She starts uncontrollably turning into a big red panda whenever she gets excited. With the help of her friends, Mei learns to be her confident, true self and accept the red panda inside her. The story is based on the childhood experiences of Domee Shi, the movie director. Those behind Turning Red reminded Asian viewers of their childhood. At the same time, they also wanted to avoid harmful stereotypes (刻板印象). For example, the filmmakers at first were concerned that a straight-A student could make the stereotype about Asian people deeper. However, they reflected on their own experiences. Growing up, they felt pressured to be A-students. They also had to deal with changes in their bodies and relationships. In the end, they decided to keep that in the story. “We always deal with the writing of these characters from their goals,” says Shi. At the same time, Shi points out that Mei is attracted by this new world, her friends, and everything that the red panda represents. This sudden change in her appearance represents the mess of growing up and all the feelings inside of us that we’re taught at a young age to put away. Instead of quieting the “red panda” and keeping it inside, Shi wanted teens to accept their “red panda”. She wanted teens not to be ashamed of their feelings. People of all ages can understand Turning Red. “While we may not be becoming the best version of ourselves, it’s our truer version,” she said. “It’s not about being the best you can be,” she explained. “It’s about being you as much as you can.” 12. What is Turning Red mainly about? A. A special friendship. B. A mother’s reflection. C. A teenager’s growth. D. A student’s problem. 13. Why was Mei made an A-student at last? A. To call attention to academic struggles. B. To challenge popular assumption. C. To share true-life learning experiences. D. To set an example for teenagers. 14. Which may be Domee Shi’s idea about Turning Red? A. Be brave to express oneself. B. Accept yourself as who you are. C. Be open to other's criticism. D. Deal with changes more calmly. 15. What is the text? A. A report. B. A movie review. C. A diary. D. A personal story. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Become a More Social Person Socializing is generally considered a pleasant and leisurely activity. ___16___ Here are some ways to help you become a more social person over all. B. 15.
