Diving to Fight Plastic Pollution in Barcelona
Join this Barcelona diving project to help remove plastic and fishing nets from the Mediterranean.
Duration: 1–12 weeks
Age: 18+
What diving experience do I need?
Divers of all abilities are welcome — whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience. However, applicants must be medically fit to dive. Training and guidance will be provided for all skill levels, and all necessary diving equipment is included.
If you join for just one week, you need a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) qualification. For trips of two weeks and up, no prior qualification is required — training will be provided. You may even gain extra diving qualifications during the project.
What will I be doing?
Each morning, meet at the marina (小港湾) to join the diving team. You’ll spend the morning diving and collecting plastic waste, old fishing nets, and other rubbish. Beginners will receive one-on-one instruction in shallow waters as they complete their CMAS (世界潜水运动联合会) qualification, while advanced divers will sail out to deeper areas. Capable volunteers will carry nets and bags to collect rubbish. Following the dive, volunteers will return to the station to analyze, weigh, and document the collected waste. All waste will then be sent off for recycling. The rest of the day is yours to explore Barcelona.
Accommodation
You’ll stay in a newly built, large eco-hostel, just 25 minutes by subway from the city center. The hostel features spacious rooms with bathrooms, shared common areas, free breakfast, and WiFi. Need extra nights? Dormitories and private rooms are available at different prices.
1. What is a must for all participants?
A. Being available for 12 weeks. B. Being in good health.

Every morning at 5 a.m. when most people are asleep, a single figure would be busy in the kitchen, cooking meals for the needy in Singapore until the rest of the volunteers and the four full-time cooks arrive. Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less-privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives.
During one of his visits to collect vegetables and distribute them to a less-privileged neighbourhood, his wife noticed that the elderly did not take the vegetables. When Mrs Tay asked for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.
Through Willing Hearts, Mr Tay hopes to expose the younger generation to the country’s backyard, to allow them to see and experience what goes on behind closed doors. This is to encourage them to become more compassionate individuals who understand the importance of taking care of the elderly, and be inspired to enhance unity within their own families. His best gift during the course of this journey is seeing how younger volunteers help and feed the less-privileged. One volunteer, he proudly tells us, has been inspired to start his own programme to help the needy.
As a non-profit organization, Willing Hearts relies heavily on donations and food collections. Although the volunteers at Willing Hearts may be a small and irregular group, they are always on the lookout for the poor to extend their assistance to them.
4. What inspired Tony Tay and his wife to start Willing Hearts?
A. The need to raise money for the poor.
B. The lack of volunteers in Singapore.
C. An old woman’s difficulty in cooking.
D. Their dream of becoming full-time cooks.
5. What does the underlined word “backyard” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A. The garden behind a house. B. The hidden social problems.
C. The kitchen where food is prepared. D. The volunteer team of Willing Hearts.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Tony Tay?
A. Devoted and inspiring. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Organized and easy-going. D. Knowledgeable and modest.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Tony Tay: A Cook for the Elderly Folks
B. Volunteers: Serving Local Communities
C. Younger Generation: Caring for the Elderly
D. Willing Hearts: Bringing Kindness to the Needy
C
Next time you’re walking through a park on a hot day, take a moment to sit under a big old tree. You’ll find that the temperature is something like 2℃ cooler than if you were beneath an umbrella. Why? Because a mature tree releases a massive amount of water from its leaves, which cools the surrounding air, just like the way sweating cools our bodies down.
So a single tree influences the microclimate around it — but what about an entire forest? That’s the question explored in The Power of Trees by German forester Peter Wohlleben. He writes about trees, ecosystems, roots and the many creatures who live in and among them in a fresh, lively way. He believes forests and trees make decisions about their survival, protect and look after their young.
For readers, some of this language is familiar, and some may know that this style has been a source of derision (嘲笑) in the past. However, it’s this down-to-earth, conversational style that makes the book come to life and makes complex science easy to follow. He explains processes, such as the way trees access and use sugars at different times of the year, in simple, everyday terms.
Wohlleben writes in a calm style, but he can’t hide his anger with the way people today — including many environmentalists — now “think of trees as little more than biological storage units for carbon dioxide either while they are alive or when they are dead”. This narrow perspective ignores the vast beneficial effects that forests generate for global temperature management. His claims and criticisms are backed by emerging science and new research, as well as practical observations of how the presence of forests changes the landscape nearby.
This book is wise and thought-provoking. In his chapter highlighting the role of wolves as top predators (捕食者) in preserving the forest, Wohlleben writes: “We can come at protecting forests from whatever direction we want, but the results are always the same. We must put less pressure on nature by exploiting (开发) it less. We must strengthen forests by allowing them to take care of themselves.”
8. What does The Power of Trees explore?
A. Temperature management. B. The loss of water in leaves.
C. Formation of microclimates. D. The effects that forests bring.
9. Which can describe the language in the book?
A. Complex. B. Fancy. C. Accessible. D. Professional.
10. How does Wohlleben deal with people’s narrow perspective on forests?
A. He treats it lightly. B. He turns a deaf ear to it.
C. He accepts it partly. D. He argues against it convincingly.
11. What does Wohlleben suggest for protecting forests?
A. Fighting climate change. B. Driving wolves away.
C. Returning farmland to forest. D. Limiting human interference.
D
For centuries, humans have relied on dogs to keep large predators (捕食性动物) away from their homes and livestock. In Montana’s grasslands, where expanding grizzly bear populations increasingly wander into yards, researchers have discovered a new way to signal to these beasts that they are unwelcome. A six-year study from the University of Montana has found that drones are significantly more effective than guard dogs at keeping grizzly bears away from human settlements.
The grizzly is a powerful predator weighing up to 751 kilograms with 15-centimeter claws and a bite force strong enough to break bones. Despite their terrifying capabilities, they are surprisingly adaptable eaters. They’ll consume everything from wheat to shellfish, which frequently brings them into conflict with human food sources and activities. These food resources draw them toward populated areas.
When study author Wesley Sarmento was hired by Montana’s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks in 2017 as the first bear manager based entirely on the Great Plains, local residents made their wishes clear: they didn’t want bears near homes, in towns, or damaging property and livestock. This led Sarmento to test various hazing methods to keep bears away.
Over the next six years, Sarmento conducted 163 different “hazing events” across roughly 28,116 square kilometers of open grasslands. He tested four different methods: drones equipped with thermal cameras, vehicles, specially trained Airedale guard dogs, and various projectiles (发射物) like rubber bullets and cracker shells.
Drones successfully scared away bears in 91% of attempts, significantly outperforming guard dogs (57%). Vehicles proved effective at 85%, while projectiles achieved a 74% success rate. Drones increased the odds of pursuing a bear by 127% compared to vehicles. This effectiveness stems from drones’ unique strengths: their thermal cameras help operators spot bears in thick brush or during cooler weather. Operators can control bear movements from a safe distance.
Throughout the study period, no bears or humans were injured during any of the hazing events. Bears typically escaped to locations significantly farther from roads and human development. Over time, older bears required less hazing, indicating that bears learned to avoid human areas through these negative experiences.
12. Why do bears frequently approach human settlements?
A. They are losing their habitats. B. They are attracted to human food.
C. They are aggressive by nature. D. They are naturally curious animals.
13. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The experimental design. B. The experimental goals.
C. The experimental results. D. The experimental subject.
14. What do the figures in Paragraph 5 demonstrate?
A. The advantage of drones. B. The difficulty of bear management.
C. The importance of distance. D. The necessity of combined methods.
15. What can be learned about bears from the last paragraph?
A. They prefer living near humans.
B. They show adaptive learning behavior.
C. They become accustomed to drones.
D. They will keep having conflicts with humans.

Lily’s grandma came from a quiet small village in northern China. Having practiced paper-cutting for decades, she was extremely skilled at this traditional folk art. For as long as Lily could remember, grandma would create delicate paper cuts of flowers, animals and festive patterns for every traditional festival, faithfully passing on this precious old custom.
Growing up in a modern city, Lily was deeply influenced by fashionable urban culture. She was crazy about trendy pop music and creative digital designs, which filled her spare time. In her eyes, traditional paper cutting was old-fashioned and totally meaningless in modern life. Therefore, she always turned down grandma’s kind invitation to learn the craft without hesitation.
One cold winter, Lily’s school decided to hold a Cultural Heritage Fair (展会,博览会). Every student was assigned a special task: to design and present a work that could perfectly represent their unique family traditional culture. Upon hearing the news, grandma was overjoyed. She volunteered to teach Lily to cut a vivid red tiger, a symbol of luck and vitality for the upcoming Spring Festival. Contrary to grandma’s expectation, Lily refused coldly, stubbornly believing the ancient craft was completely out of date.
Late that night, soft and gentle paper-cutting sounds woke Lily up. Filled with curiosity, she tiptoed quietly to the living room. There grandma sat alone on the sofa, devoting herself entirely to cutting the red tiger. Her wrinkled fingers, hardened by years of practice, moved skillfully with the small scissors. Piece by piece, a powerful tiger began to appear on the red paper, its eyes bright and its claws vivid. Lily stood quietly behind her, staring at the lifelike patterns and she realized how precious this folk art was. At that time, a strong sense of guilt washed over her for her previous cold words.

【导语】本文主要介绍新加坡的公益组织Willing Hearts的由来、服务内容以及它传递善意、感召年轻人奉献爱心的故事。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“When Mrs Tay asked for the reason, one replied that she could not cook and thus only ate the rice delivered to her. Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.(当泰夫人询问原因时,一位老人说自己不会做饭,只能吃送来的米饭。泰夫人主动提出为她做饭,就是这一餐开启了Willing Hearts,该组织至今已经提供了近65万份餐食,数量还在增加)”可知,一位老人做饭困难这件事促使他们创办了Willing Hearts。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Through Willing Hearts, Mr Tay hopes to expose the younger generation to the country’s backyard, to allow them to see and experience what goes on behind closed doors.(通过Willing Hearts,泰先生希望让年轻一代看到这个国家的backyard,让他们看见并了解闭门之后发生的事情)”可知,短语behind closed doors表示“不为人知的情况”,结合文章讲述弱势群体的困境,可推断backyard在这里不是字面含义,而是指隐藏的社会问题,hidden social problems符合语境。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, pack and deliver the food to various parts of the island.(托尼·泰先生和他的团队日复一日准备、烹饪、打包并送餐到岛上各处)”以及第三段中的“One volunteer, he proudly tells us, has been inspired to start his own programme to help the needy.(他自豪地告诉我们,有一名志愿者受到感召,创办了自己的项目帮助有需要的人)”可知,托尼·泰乐于奉献并且能够鼓舞他人,devoted and inspiring符合人物形象。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Mrs Tay then offered to cook for her, and that single meal initiated Willing Hearts, which has since served nearly 650,000 meals and counting.(泰夫人主动提出为她做饭,就是这一餐开启了Willing Hearts,该组织至今已经提供了近65万份餐食,数量还在增加)”以及第一段中的“This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life work tirelessly to bring a smile to the less-privileged, bringing warmth and kindness into their lives.(这支来自各行各业充满爱心的志愿者队伍不知疲倦地为弱势群体带去笑容,为他们的生活送去温暖与善意)”可知,文章围绕Willing Hearts这个组织,讲述它向困难人群传递善意的故事,所以,题目“Willing Hearts: Bringing Kindness to the Needy(Willing Hearts:将善意带给无助之人)”可以概括文章的主题,适合作为标题。
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. D

If stress or sadness has ever pushed you to buy something you probably don’t need, you’re not alone. Almost all of us do this from time to time. This behavior is known as emotional spending. Occasional emotional spending isn’t usually an issue. But when it gets out of hand, it can empty your bank accounts. Not only that, but the rush of good feelings from shopping doesn’t last, and the feelings of unhappiness can still linger. ____16____
Practice the 24-hour rule. To resist your brain’s urge to buy, put some time between your impulse (冲动) and actually purchasing something. ____17____ You can wait 24 hours and then go back to see if they are things you actually want. That can be super powerful.
Use cash instead of simply handing over a card when shopping in person. ____18____ When you actually have to slap down dollar bills at the store, it’s sort of a painful experience. Doing so will help you think more rationally about spending your money.
Cope with emotions in healthier ways. Emotional spending often aims for the good feelings from purchases. ____19____When the urge to buy hits, consider going for a walk, playing sports, or taking a warm bath.
____20____You deserve to have things you enjoy, and there’s nothing wrong with chasing the thrill of going shopping. But if you are finding that your emotional spending is becoming a problem, use these tips above to address it.
A. It can make you feel good at the moment.
B. So, how can you keep your buying desire under control?
C. Load things in the cart, and don’t buy them at the moment.
D. Then, how can we make that thrill from shopping last longer?

根据时间状语over the past years可知,此处要用现在完成时,主语Orders是复数,所以谓语动词为have flown。
本句为强调句型It is...that...,被强调部分是主语her creative spirit and selfless sharing,所以用that。

【答案】One possible version:
Hello everyone, I’m Li Hua. I feel honored to share something that made me truly proud. It was the day I helped an elderly neighbor connect with her family through a smartphone.
Last month, our community held a volunteer program to help seniors use smartphones. I helped Grandma Liu, who hoped to video call her grandson far away. Hard of hearing, she often tapped wrong buttons. I taught her patiently over and over. When she saw her grandson on the screen, her eyes lit up with joy and she thanked me again and again.
I am proud of the cross-generation bond I built. In a fast-changing world, patience and kindness matter. Technology gains its true meaning when it brings people closer.
Thank you.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Then, she walked forward and asked grandma if she could learn paper-cutting from her. Grandma looked up in surprise, her tired eyes suddenly lighting up with joy. Without a word, she gently pulled Lily closer and handed her a pair of scissors and a piece of red paper. Under grandma’s patient guidance, Lily carefully followed each step, though her clumsy fingers struggled at first. Night after night, they sat together by the warm lamp, cutting, folding and laughing. Gradually, Lily began to appreciate the beauty hidden in every delicate pattern. She finally understood that paper-cutting was not old-fashioned at all, but a living treasure carrying love and tradition.
Paragraph 2:
At the Cultural Heritage Fair, Lily’s red tiger paper-cut drew many visitors’ attention. Standing beside her work, Lily proudly introduced the meaning behind the tiger and shared how her grandma had passed on the craft. Many classmates gathered around, amazed by the vivid details and rich cultural stories. Some even asked Lily to teach them. Seeing grandma’s satisfied smile from afar, Lily felt a wave of warmth in her heart. She realized that small acts of preserving tradition could truly make a big difference. From then on, she became a young inheritor of this precious folk art.
