Unit 3
before、after、when 和 while 引导的时间状语从句
When the weather is good, my grandpa likes going fishing.
The sun came out after the storm ended.
Paper wasn't widely used before Cai Lun improved the method of making it.
I went to school after I finished my breakfast.
The days get longer when spring comes.
While my sister was sweeping the floor, I was washing the dishes.
While the boys were playing football, it rained.
While (I am) travelling, I like to buy some souvenirs.
When (she is) in trouble, she always asks for my help.
Mr Brown has been in Beijing since you left.
I worked till/until he came back.
as soon as 和 whenever 引导的时间状语从句
(1)as soon as 意思是 “一…… 就”。
(2)whenever

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." These old words are still true today. In a middle school in Suzhou, teachers have noticed something interesting. Two students may get almost the same marks, but they learn in quite different ways. One is outgoing and learns best by discussing with others; the other is quiet and thinks carefully before speaking. Both of them can do well, but only when each uses the way that suits him or her.
Sadly, many teenagers never stop to ask themselves what kind of person they are. They copy their classmates' notes, follow the same timetable and even choose the same after-school activities. When they fail, they simply tell themselves that they are not clever enough, instead of looking for a better way.
Psychologists say that self-knowledge grows from small steps. Keep a short diary for two weeks. Write down when you feel most focused and when you get tired most easily. Notice what makes you lose patience and what makes you proud of yourself. After that, you will see a clearer picture of your own strengths and weaknesses.
This does not mean you should always do what you like. Sometimes growth comes from doing the difficult thing. But if you know yourself, you can choose the right job, the right way to study and even the right friends. You will also understand yourself better when you make mistakes, because you know that nobody is perfect.
4.How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By telling a story. B.By asking a question.
C.By giving some numbers. D.By quoting an old saying.

A.never make any mistake in your life B.always do what you like best
C.choose the right job and the right way to study D.become the top student in your class

A.Know Yourself, Then Grow B.Ways to Get High Marks
C.How to Keep a Diary D.Why Teenagers Fail

Almost everyone admires people who succeed. We read their stories, watch their matches and repeat their famous words. What we seldom see is the long, boring and often painful part that comes before success. A study at a British university once followed 120 young athletes for five years.
The researchers found that the best predictor of future success was not early talent, but the way these young people dealt with failure. Those who believed their ability could grow were far more likely to keep training after a poor performance; those who thought ability was fixed often gave up within a year.
Why does this matter to us? Because life is full of moments when things go wrong. A student who fails an important exam, a runner who misses the finishing line, a girl who is told she is not good enough — all of them face the same choice: to stop, or to try once more. Giving up feels safe at first. It protects us from further pain and from other people's pity. But it also closes the door to everything we might become.
This does not mean we should look for pain on purpose or refuse all help. Real perseverance is not blind. It asks us to look honestly at what went wrong, to change our method if we need to, and sometimes to walk away from a goal that no longer fits us. What it never allows is to say "I can't" before we have truly tried.
There is another reason to keep going. Life is not only about great success. The beauty of life often hides in small things: a kind word from a stranger, a small flower pushing through the hard ground after weeks of rain. Moments like these teach us that growth takes time. So when you feel like giving up, remember that the story is not over. As long as you are still trying, you are still writing it.
8.The underlined word "predictor" in Paragraph 1 means "______".
A.a person who trains young athletes B.a record of the matches they took part in
C.something that shows what will happen later D.a rule that every athlete must follow
9.Why does giving up "feel safe at first"?
A.Because it protects us from more pain and others' pity. B.Because it helps us find a better method.
C.Because it makes others believe in us. D.Because it brings us closer to our goal.
10.According to Paragraph 3, real perseverance does NOT mean ______.
A.looking honestly at what went wrong B.changing your method when necessary
C.walking away from a goal that no longer fits D.saying "I can't" before you have truly tried
11.The writer's main purpose in writing this passage is to ______.
A.advise readers to keep trying in a wise way B.show readers how to become a top athlete
C.explain why life is full of beauty D.introduce a famous British university

Ways to Combat(搏斗) Phone Addiction(上瘾)
Many people struggle with smartphone addiction. They constantly check notifications (通知) and feel restless without their devices. Too much screen time can increase stress and anxiety. 26 Here are several practical ways to reduce your screen time.
·Adjust phone settings. Start by turning off notifications during work or study hours, because warnings are a major source of distraction. 27 For example, try removing the apps you don’t use every day and put only your most important apps on the first page. You can also enable grayscale (灰度) mode on your phone. This simple change will make the phone look less attractive so that you may use it less often.
·Create phone-free zones. Choose certain rooms in your house as phone-free zones. The bedroom is a great place to start, as avoiding phones there can improve your sleep quality. Besides, the dining room is another good choice. 28
·Find alternative activities. It’s much easier to reduce phone use if you have other things to do. Try hobbies that keep your hands busy, such as painting, knitting, or doing puzzles. Physical activities are also very helpful. 29 Reading books is another excellent choice, as it helps improve your focus without the endless distractions of a digital screen.
· 30 Try to gradually reduce your phone use over a month. Start by setting specific goals, like limiting screen time to two hours a day. Use tracking apps to monitor your progress each day and see how much you’re using your phone. By finding activities to replace your phone time, you can break bad habits and feel more in control. Thirty days from now, you’ll be glad you started.
A.Track your phone usage.
B.Try a 30-day phone reduction challenge.
C.Therefore, it’s important for you to find a healthy balance.
D.Creating a more straightforward home screen is another smart move.
E.Next, turn off all non-essential notifications and create phone-free zones.
F.Taking a simple walk or practicing yoga can boost your mood and reduce stress.
G.This will help encourage more face-to-face conversations with your family.

Sleep is very important for teenagers. Most teenagers need about 8 to 9 hours of sleep every night. But many of them do not get enough sleep.
A study shows that nearly 60% of middle school students sleep less than 8 hours every night. Why? First, many students have too much homework. They have to stay up late to finish it. Second, some students spend a lot of time on their mobile phones before going to bed. The blue light from phones makes it hard for them to fall asleep. Third, some students have bad sleeping habits. They often go to bed very late on weekends and sleep for a long time in the morning. This makes it hard for them to sleep early on weekdays.
Not getting enough sleep brings many problems. Teenagers may feel tired in class and cannot listen to teachers carefully. They may also become angry easily and find it hard to get on well with classmates.
Experts say that good sleeping habits help a lot. For example, try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Do not use mobile phones an hour before bedtime. And doing some exercise during the day can also help you sleep better at night.

Most people believe paintings are made to show beautiful scenes or real people. We expect artists to create works that look like what we see in the world. However, some artists create paintings with a different goal. They make art to play tricks on our eyes. This kind of art is called Op Art, short for Optical Art.
Op Art uses simple shapes, lines and strong colour contrasts. The artists do not paint mountains, animals or people. Instead, they use repeated patterns to create visual illusions. When we look at these paintings, our eyes and brain may feel as if the flat painting surface is moving. Even though the canvas stays still, the lines seem to shake or wave. They make our brains work harder to understand what we are watching.
Artists of Op Art spend plenty of time planning every line carefully. They do not depend on sudden inspiration. They use basic rules of how human eyes receive light. Small changes in line thickness or colour can lead to quite different visual effects. Some famous Op Art works were so surprising that they became popular worldwide in the 1960s.
Op Art is more than just fun visual games. It connects art with the science of human sight. It encourages viewers to think about how our eyes and brain work together. In this way, this special art form opens a new way for people to enjoy art.
5.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Most artists prefer to paint real scenes and people.
B.Op Art works are painted for the same purpose as common paintings.
C.Not all paintings are created to show things we can see in real life.
D.It is difficult for most people to understand the beauty of paintings.
6.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The artists. B.Repeated patterns. C.The viewers. D.The canvas.
7.Which of the following is TRUE about Op Art?
A.Artists usually paint natural scenery in Op Art works.
B.The paintings can really move because of special paints.
C.Artists design lines and colours to create visual tricks.
D.It became unpopular soon after it first appeared.
8.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Different Kinds of Traditional Paintings. B.Op Art: Art That Plays Tricks on Our Eyes.
C.Rules of Colours Used in Modern Paintings. D.How Our Brains Receive Light and Signals.

Unit 3
before、after、when 和 while 引导的时间状语从句

A.Know Yourself, Then Grow B.Ways to Get High Marks
