Encouraged by another climber, Odede and his friend trained hard over a year, taking nature walks and studying climbing courses. By May of the following year, they were ready. Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, attracts about 50,000 visitors every year. Climbing plans last from five to nine days. The climb is hard but meaningful. Odede said, “That night, we climbed to the top, which was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but also the most amazing. Behind every success lies a simple truth: people who often celebrate small wins achieve more. It’s not about holding big parties for every little good thing. It’s about having a winner’s way of thinking. Notice, praise, and value these small victories, and use them to keep moving forward.
Small wins hold the power to make a difference. When we realize every tiny bit of progress we make and value it, it will boost our motivation and bring us joy. As we see ourselves getting closer to our goals step by step, our brain will send a positive signal: “This is working!” It will keep pushing us to move forward without stopping. In fact, our choice to value or ignore(忽视) small wins will bring about completely different results in our lives.
When we choose to value small wins and take the time to celebrate each one, we start a positive cycle. A basketball player who raises his fist after a successful shot isn’t just showing his excitement. At this moment, his brain thinks, “I did it!” He feels happy about winning. The good feeling stays with him, and next time he will be ready to try harder and fight for the ball. A student who rewards(奖励) himself with a cup of hot drink after finishing a study task is doing the same thing. Over time, our minds form a pattern: ___▲___.
However, if we ignore small wins and stop celebrating them, we will break this positive cycle and focus on failures instead. This often leads to giving up. For example, if a person who wants to get fit only cares about losing 10 kilograms in a month and never celebrates small things like exercising for 30 minutes, he will easily feel discouraged and even want to quit the fitness plan.
So how can we make use of the power of small wins in daily life? First, break big goals into small tasks. Instead of planning to write a whole book, try to write 300 words a day and celebrate when you finish. Second, keep a notebook to record all your small wins. Third, reward yourself with something small, like a short walk or a piece of your favourite snack. Celebrate every small win, and you will make success a habit.
23. Which of the following can be put in the “___▲___”?
A. small rewards →small wins →small tasks
B. small wins →positive feelings →more efforts
C. big goals →unavoidable mistakes →bad feelings
D. more efforts →growing confidence →great success
24. What is the relationship between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
A. Paragraph 3 tells us how to carry out the idea in Paragraph 2 as rules.
B. Paragraph 3 uses positive examples to explain the idea in Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 3 shows the bad results of following the idea in Paragraph 2.
D. Paragraph 3 talks about a new idea that has nothing to do with Paragraph 2.
25. Why does the writer mention the example of a person who wants to lose weight in Paragraph 4?
A. To show the importance of setting big goals.
B. To explain how small wins can lead to success.
C. To suggest that losing weight is difficult for most people.
D. To prove that ignoring small wins may result in giving up.
26. Which of the following shows the student uses the “small wins” idea?
A. Ben decides to finish his math workbook in just one day without having any rest.
B. Cindy asks her mom to buy her a big gift if she can finish her homework on time.
C. Emily makes a 3-step plan for her project and rests for 10 minutes after each step.
D. Sam still feels sad about his bad test grades though he has done better than before.

Mr. and Mrs. March lived together with their four daughters. Amy was very shy. Beth loved being at home. Meg looked very pretty. Jo was tall and thin and she was a tomboy. Their home was always busy and full of noise and people. Next to them lived old Mr. Laurence and his grandson, Laurie. They lived in a very large and comfortable house. But it was a house without life.
One day, Jo saw Laurie standing at an upstairs window in his house and looking down at their garden. Jo’s sisters were playing in the snow there. They were throwing snowballs and having a lot of fun. But Laurie’s face was very sad.
“Poor boy!” Jo thought. “He’s all alone. He needs some friends.” She couldn’t stop thinking about him. She wanted to go and see him, but how could she go to the house without an invitation?
Then one snowy afternoon, she saw Laurie’s grandpa go out. This gave her an idea. She took a broom from the kitchen.
“What are you going to do, Jo?” asked her sister Meg.
“To clear the garden path.” Answered Jo.
When Laurie saw Jo from the window, a big smile changed his pale, sad face.
Jo laughed and shouted, “How are you? Are you ill?”
Laurie opened the window and said, “I’m better now, thank you. I had a bad cold and had to stay inside for a week”.
“I’m sorry,” said Jo. “Are you bored?”
“Yes, very.” he replied.
“Don’t your friends come to visit you?”
“No. But I don’t want to see anybody. Boys are noisy and they give me a headache.”
“Girls are quiet.”
“I don’t know any girls.”
“You know us.”
“That’s true! Can you come and visit me?” cried Laurie.
“I’m not quiet, but I’d like to come,” replied Jo. “I must ask Mother first.” She ran back into her house.
A few minutes later, she returned and rang the bell on the door of Laurie’s house. A servant took her upstairs.
“Here I am!” she said brightly. “Mother sends her love and my sisters gave me this blancmange(牛奶冻) for you.”
“That looks delicious,” Laurie said. He was very happy to see Jo.
Jo looked around. There were lots of books on the shelves.
“A nice room!” she said. “I can read to you if you like.”
“No, let’s talk,” replied Laurie.
“All right,” said Jo, “I can talk for hours. My sisters say I never know when to stop.”
“You have three sisters—Amy, Beth and Meg.” Laurie continued.
“How do you know this?” Jo was surprised.
“You call each other’s names when you are in the garden. Sometimes I can see you all around the table with your mother. She has a very kind face. I like looking at her. I haven’t got a mother.”
Jo felt sad when she heard this.
“Why don’t you come and visit us?” she said, “It isn’t good for you to stay in this house all the time.”
“Thank you. I’d like to come very much.” Said Laurie.
“We know all our neighbours except you.” Jo said, “I’m glad we’re friends now.”
She told him about all the interesting things in her life. She said, “Besides plays, I also love books.” Laurie loved books too, and offered to show her the library in the house. The library was a wonderful room. Jo loved it.
“Wow!” she said, “All those books!”
Laurie said, “A person needs more than books.”

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”?
A British survey shows that there are many electronic products in teenagers’ bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers’ sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16. It is found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“The results are very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor, “We call it ‘junk sleep’. It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality of the sleep is low, too.” The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, music player or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products, and that teenagers should spend less time on phones.
根据上面短文的内容回答问题(每小题答案不超过6 个单词)。

The story of Helen Keller
The person I admire most is Helen Keller, a famous American writer and speaker. When she was only nineteen months old, she lost her sight and hearing because of a serious illness. Her life was full of difficulties, but she never gave up.
With the help of her teacher Anne Sullivan, Helen learned to read, write and even speak. She studied very hard and went to college, and finally she got her degree. She wrote many books and gave speeches all over the world, encouraging disabled people to keep trying and never give up.
From her story, I have learned that nothing is impossible for a willing heart. When I meet difficulties in my study or life, I will always remember her courage, keep trying and never lose heart.
