In 742, a Chinese monk named Jianzhen was asked by two Japanese monks to bring Buddhism to their country. Jianzhen, who lived in Yangzhou, agreed at once. He was fifty-five, and the sea journey to Japan was long and dangerous. But he said, “For the good of others, I will go.”
His first five attempts all failed. Once his ship was driven onto rocks; once he was attacked by robbers; once the government stopped him because the voyage seemed too risky. In 748, on his fifth try, a storm lasted for days and his ship drifted far to the south. Jianzhen lost his eyesight because of the illness that followed. Many of his followers gave up and went home. He did not.
In 753, at the age of sixty-six — blind, and on his sixth voyage — Jianzhen finally landed in Japan. He was welcomed like a hero. He taught medicine, farming and the correct way to make tofu, and he helped to build Tōshōdai-ji, a temple that still stands in Nara today. Japanese people still call him “the Blind Saint”.
Jianzhen died in Japan nine years later. He never saw his hometown again. But the road he opened has never closed: every year, thousands of visitors travel between Yangzhou and Nara, and a small hall in Yangzhou’s Daming Temple still keeps a statue of him. A journey that began with five failures ended with a bridge between two cultures.
54.Why did Jianzhen agree to go to Japan?
A.He wanted to become famous.
B.He was asked to bring Buddhism there.
C.He wanted to learn Japanese medicine.
D.The government sent him.
55.What happened to Jianzhen on his fifth attempt?
A.He was attacked by robbers.
B.His ship hit the rocks.
C.He lost his eyesight after a long storm.
D.He was stopped by the government.
56.Which of the following is TRUE about Jianzhen’s life in Japan?
A.He built a temple that still stands.
B.He became a Japanese monk.
C.He taught Chinese poetry.
D.He returned to Yangzhou once.
57.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Blind Master’s Hometown
B.How Tofu Came to Japan
C.A Dangerous Sea
D.Five Failures, One Bridge

Bamboo: The Tallest Grass in the World
Walk into Ge Garden in Yangzhou and the first thing you notice is bamboo. It grows along the walls, bends over the paths and throws moving shadows on the white walls. The garden’s owner, Huang Zhiyun, loved bamboo so much that he named the garden after the character “ge” — half of the Chinese character for bamboo.
Bamboo is not a tree. It is a kind of grass, and the tallest grass on Earth. Some kinds grow nearly one metre a day; you can almost watch them rise. A bamboo stem is hollow, and it has hard rings at every joint, so it bends in the wind instead of breaking. That is why bamboo is used for everything from fishing rods to house frames.
In China, bamboo has long been a symbol of the good person. It stays green all winter, so it stands for strength that does not change. It bends but does not break, so it stands for a soft outside and a strong heart. And because of the space inside it, old writers said it stands for an open mind — a mind that is always ready to learn.
Bamboo is useful in other cultures too. In Japan, it is used in tea rooms and in the famous bamboo forest of Arashiyama. In Colombia and Brazil, people build houses and bridges with it. Engineers in Europe are now testing bamboo as a material for bicycles. A plant that grows in a Chinese garden may one day carry a student to school in another country.
58.Why did Huang Zhiyun name his garden “Ge Garden”?
A.Because “Ge” was his family name.
B.Because it is half of the character for bamboo.
C.Because the garden had only one pavilion.
D.Because bamboo grows in one corner of it.
59.Why doesn’t bamboo break easily in the wind?
A.It is the tallest grass.
B.It grows very fast.
C.Its stem is hollow with hard rings.
D.Its roots go very deep.
60.What does the underlined word “hollow” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Empty inside.
B.Heavy and hard.
C.Straight and tall.
D.Green all year.
61.What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.Bamboo is more useful in Japan than in China.
B.A Chinese plant can travel and help people everywhere.
C.European bicycles are better than Chinese ones.
D.The bamboo forest in Japan is the most famous.

Lacquer, Red and New
Zhou Yifan is twenty-eight, and she works with a material that is older than her city. Yangzhou lacquerware goes back more than two thousand years. Workers paint thin layers of tree sap onto wood, wait for each layer to dry, and then cut tiny pictures into the surface. A good box may take a whole year. When Zhou told her parents that she wanted to study lacquer design, her father asked, “Who will buy it?”
She went to Milan for three years and learned to design furniture. There she noticed something strange: Italian designers loved her sketches of flowers and birds, but some of her Chinese classmates thought the old patterns were “out of date”. “That was the moment I understood my job,” she says. “I had to find a way for a two-thousand-year-old craft to sit in a modern room.”
Back in Yangzhou, Zhou began with small things. She designed a set of phone stands, each with a different lacquer pattern of the city’s bridges. They sold out in two weeks. Then came lamps, trays and, last year, a coffee table whose top shows the Grand Canal at night — the water made of four thousand pieces of shell.
Her workshop now has eleven young workers, and six of them studied design abroad. They keep the old steps but change the shapes. “A craft does not die because it is old,” Zhou says. “It dies when nobody uses it.” Her next plan is a lacquer workshop for children, so that the first thing a nine-year-old touches is not a museum glass case, but a real, warm piece of wood.
62.What did Zhou’s father worry about?
A.Whether she could find buyers for her work.
B.Whether she could learn the old skills.
C.Whether Milan was too far away.
D.Whether the craft was too dangerous.
63.What did Zhou understand during her years in Milan?
A.Old patterns were out of date.
B.Italian design was better than Chinese design.
C.The old craft needed a modern form.
D.She should stop designing flowers and birds.
64.What was special about her coffee table?
A.Its top showed the canal at night in shell.
B.It was made of four thousand pieces of wood.
C.It was the first lacquer table in China.
D.It took her three years to finish.
65.What does Zhou mean by “It dies when nobody uses it”?
A.Old things break easily.
B.Young people should not use lacquer.
C.Museums should keep lacquer boxes.
D.A craft lives only when people use it.
第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺、结构完整。选项中有一项为多余选项。
Next month, sixteen students from a sister school in Britain will spend a week at our school. Some of them will stay in our homes. If yours is one of the host families, the following ideas may help.
Let them rest first
________66________
A guest who has just flown for eight hours does not want a big party. A quiet room, a clean towel and a glass of water are enough. Ask what time they would like to sleep, and let them decide.
Show them your everyday life
________67________
You do not need to take them to famous places every day. A trip to the market, a walk to school or an evening with your grandparents can be far more interesting than a photo beside a lake.
Talk about the small differences
________68________
Tell them how you greet an old neighbour, why you take off your shoes at the door, and what you eat for breakfast. Then ask them the same questions. The best conversations often begin with “Why do you do that?”
Watch, don’t only listen
________69________
Your guest may be shy at first, and may say “it’s fine” when it is not. Watch their face, not only their words. If they look tired, offer a rest. If they look lost, sit beside them and explain.
Keep in touch afterwards
________70________
A week passes quickly. A short message, a photo or a card at New Year can keep a friendship alive for years.
A. Give them time to rest.
B. Let them try cooking a Chinese dish.
C. In fact, the ordinary things are the ones they remember.
D. Small differences can be the most confusing of all.
E. Learn to read their faces, not just their words.

七、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题。
From a Dusty Bank to a Green Park
Twenty years ago, the land beside the old canal in Yangzhou was a mess. There were cement factories, a chemical plant and piles of waste. Few people went there. Today the same place is Sanwan Park — two hundred hectares of water, grass and trees, with three kilometres of wooden paths above the wetlands.
The change began in 2014. The city closed or moved eighty-six factories along the canal and cleaned the polluted soil. Workers planted more than one hundred kinds of local plants, so that birds and fish could return. Today more than forty kinds of birds live in the park; some of them had not been seen in the city for thirty years.
The hardest part was not the building. It was the people. Many old workers had spent their whole lives in those factories. The city held more than two hundred meetings with them and found new jobs for almost everyone.
Sanwan Park is now a favourite place for families at weekends. Children run on the grass, old people practise taiji under the trees, and students come to draw. “When I was young, we never came here,” says Grandpa Xu, who worked in the cement factory for thirty-one years. “Now I bring my grandson every Sunday. The water is clean, and the birds are back.”
Not every city can undo its mistakes. Yangzhou shows that it is possible — if a city is patient enough to wait for the grass to grow.
96.What was the land beside the canal like twenty years ago?
97.What did the city do along the canal in 2014?
98.Why did the workers plant more than one hundred kinds of local plants?
99.What does Grandpa Xu do in the park every Sunday now?

One possible version:
Yangzhou is a city that keeps its old stories alive.
The place I want to share is Ge Garden, a quiet garden in the east of the city. It is famous for its bamboo and for four rockeries that stand for the four seasons. In spring the rocks look soft and green; in winter they turn grey and cold, like snow on a mountain. My grandfather took me there every summer when I was a child, and he taught me the name of every kind of bamboo.
Now I sometimes take foreign friends there. They are always surprised that a garden can tell the story of a whole year. For me, Ge Garden is not only a beautiful place; it is also the place where I first learned to look at small things slowly.
