一、阅读单选
A篇
The Invisible Threat: Noise Pollution
We are often warned about air and water pollution, but another pervasive (普遍的) threat lurks (潜伏) in our cities—noise pollution. Unlike other pollutants, it is invisible, but its effects on human health and well-being are substantial.
Common sources include relentless traffic, construction activities, industrial machinery, and even loud leisure (休闲) activities. Chronic exposure to high noise levels can lead to auditory (听觉的) problems like hearing loss. Beyond the ears, it can cause sleep disturbances, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and is linked to heightened stress levels and cognitive (认知的) impairment in children.
Mitigating (减轻) this issue requires concerted efforts. Urban planning should incorporate more green spaces, as trees and shrubs act as natural sound barriers (屏障). Regulations on noise emissions from vehicles and construction sites need strict enforcement. On a personal level, using noise-canceling headphones in loud environments and being mindful (留心的) of the volume of our own activities can contribute to a quieter, healthier soundscape for everyone.
根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。
1. Why is noise pollution called an “invisible threat”?
A. Because it is completely harmless.
B. Because it only exists in factories.
C. Because it is a new type of pollution.
D. Because it cannot be seen but can harm health.
2. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a source of noise pollution?
A. Traffic and construction. B. Industrial machinery.
C. Quiet countryside landscapes. D. Loud leisure activities.
3. According to the passage, what is a potential effect of noise pollution on children?
A. Improved memory. B. Cognitive impairment.
C. Better hearing. D. Increased height.
4. How can green spaces help reduce noise pollution?
A. By making cities look prettier. B. By providing more oxygen.
C. By attracting tourists. D. By acting as natural sound barriers.
5. What is one personal action suggested to reduce noise exposure?
A. Buying a louder car. B. Using noise-canceling headphones.
C. Ignoring the problem. D. Playing music louder.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. B 4. D 5. B

B篇
The Great Smog of London
In December 1952, London faced a serious environmental disaster. For five days, a thick layer of smog (雾霾) covered the city. The smog was so heavy that people could not see their own hands in front of their faces. Buses stopped running, and people stayed indoors to avoid the dangerous air.
This event is known as the Great Smog of London. It caused thousands of deaths, mostly among the elderly and those with breathing problems. After the smog cleared, the government realized that something had to be done. The main cause of the smog was the heavy use of coal for heating and factories. People burned large amounts of coal, and the smoke mixed with fog to create the deadly smog.
As a result, the government introduced new laws to reduce air pollution. One of the most important was the Clean Air Act of 1956. It encouraged people to use cleaner fuels and limited the use of coal in cities. Over time, the air quality in London improved greatly.
Today, we face similar problems in many large cities around the world. Although we have better technology, air pollution is still a serious issue. The Great Smog of London reminds us that protecting the environment is not just important — it is a matter of life and death.
1. The underlined word “disaster” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.
A. a happy event B. a sudden change C. a terrible accident D. a long journey
2. How does the writer explain the cause of the Great Smog?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples of its effects.
C. By describing the weather. D. By comparing it to other cities.
3. We can learn from the text that ________.
A. the Great Smog of London lasted for more than a week
B. the government did nothing to solve the problem
C. the use of coal was the main reason for the smog
D. air pollution is no longer a problem today
