The Flying Horse of Gansu
In the Gansu Provincial Museum in Lanzhou, there stands a world-famous bronze horse. It is known as the “Bronze Galloping Horse (铜奔马)” or “Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow (马踏飞燕)”. Discovered in 1969 in Wuwei, Gansu, this 2,000-year-old treasure has become a symbol of Chinese tourism.
The horse is not very large—only 34.5 centimeters tall and 45 centimeters long. But its artistic value is priceless. It shows a horse running at full speed, with its tail flying in the wind. Three of its hooves (蹄) are lifted in the air, while the fourth hoof lightly touches a flying swallow. The artist’s great skill is shown in how the horse keeps perfect balance on just one small point—the swallow. And the swallow looks up in surprise, as if it cannot believe a horse could run so fast.
For many years, experts have studied why this Eastern Han Dynasty artwork is so special. Some believe it shows that ancient Chinese artists had a deep understanding of balance and movement. Others think it shows the importance of horses in ancient China. During the Han Dynasty, horses were necessary for military (军事的) use and played a key role in the ancient Silk Road trade. Wuwei was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road, so it is not surprising that such a beautiful bronze horse was found there.
Today, the Flying Horse serves as a cultural ambassador (大使) for China. It has traveled to many countries. However, the original bronze horse ________ leaves the museum in Lanzhou because it is too valuable and fragile (易碎的) to move. Instead, good copies are sent to exhibitions (展览会) abroad, so that people around the world can still enjoy this great artwork and learn about Gansu’s rich history.

Root Carving: A Special Art
Root carving (根雕) is a special traditional art in China with a long history. It uses natural tree roots to create beautiful artworks. The art mixes the natural beauty and human creativity. Different from other carvings, root carvers need to follow an important rule: “30% human work, 70% nature.” This means they must make full use of the natural shape of tree roots.
In the small villages of Chuxiong, Yunnan Province, root carvers have been closely connected with tree roots since childhood. Every fine tree root is considered as a treasure by the root carvers. It is very hard to find fine tree root materials, so the root carvers will even search for them in the dark caves (山洞). If they are lucky enough to find a fine tree root, the root carvers can be happy for a whole day.
Creating root carving works is not easy. First, root carvers need to choose the right root. Then they design what to carve based on the root’s shape. After that, they carefully carve it. Finally, they color the creation to make it bright and beautiful.
There are different kinds of root carvings. For example, some are practical (实用的), like chairs and desks. Some are decorative (装饰性的), like animal or flower shapes. Some people like to collect these root carvings because each one is special.
Root carving is not only an art form but also the Chinese wisdom in balancing nature and creativity. Today, people are becoming even more interested in this wonderful art than before. It is really important to keep this tradition alive.

A. It uses only natural materials. B. It uses different tools for carving.
C. It uses brighter colors on carving works. D. It respects the natural shape of materials more.

一、阅读单选
(来源:2026年江苏常州溧阳市燕湖初级中学新课结束学业水平调研九年级英语试题)Mortise and tenon (榫卯) is an ancient Chinese woodworking structure with a history of more than 7,000 years, dating back to the Hemudu Culture. It is one of the greatest inventions in Chinese history and is widely used in ancient buildings and wooden furniture. This great invention fully shows the excellent wisdom of ancient Chinese craftsmen.
The structure of mortise and tenon is simple but amazing. As the name suggests, a tenon is the protruding (突出) part of a piece of wood, while a mortise is the hollow hole designed to hold the tenon tightly (紧紧地). The most magical part of this structure is that it can join two pieces of wood together firmly and tightly without using any nails (钉子) or glue. This special way of connection makes the whole structure very strong and long-lasting. Many ancient buildings and furniture made in this way still keep in good condition today.
Besides its firm connection, the mortise and tenon structure also has great advantages in fighting against earthquakes. When an earthquake comes, the wooden parts can move slightly to absorb the shock instead of breaking or falling down easily. That is the reason why many ancient wooden buildings can stand for hundreds of years.
In modern times, this age-old skill is still highly valued and has found a new place in the development of science and technology. It is no longer limited to traditional furniture and wooden houses. Instead, it has been introduced into advanced fields such as modern engineering design and even space research.
Today, more and more young people are starting to learn this traditional skill. They are trying to connect ancient techniques with modern technology to create new works. Mortise and tenon tells the world that traditional Chinese culture can perfectly meet modern science and bring endless surprises. It is a bridge connecting the brilliant past to the promising future.
1. The underlined word “hollow” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. having a hole or empty space inside
B. made of very strong and hard wood
C. covered with beautiful paint
D. very heavy and difficult to move
2. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the mortise and tenon structure?
A. It can be used in ancient buildings.
B. It requires nails or glue to connect wood.
C. It helps buildings stay safe during earthquakes.
D. It is still valued in modern science and technology.
3. According to the passage, where has the mortise and tenon skill been introduced in modern times?
A. Only in traditional furniture making.
B. In fields like engineering design and space research.
C. Mainly in the construction of stone buildings.
D. In the food processing industry.
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To warn people about the danger of losing traditional skills.
B. To explain how young people invent new woodworking tools.
C. To show that traditional culture and modern technology can coexist well.
D. To compare ancient Chinese craftsmen with modern scientists.
【答案】1. A 2. B 3. B 4. C
【解析】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国古老的木结构工艺——榫卯,包括其历史、结构特点、抗震优势以及在现代科技中的新应用,展现了传统智慧与现代技术的结合。

(2)题: 第二段中指出:“it can join two pieces of wood together firmly and tightly without using any nails or glue”,表明榫卯结构连接木材时不需要钉子或胶水。
(3)题: 第四段中指出:“it has been introduced into advanced fields such as modern engineering design and even space research”,表明榫卯技艺已被引入现代工程设计和太空研究等领域。
(4)题: 最后一段提到越来越多的年轻人学习榫卯技艺,将传统技术与现代科技结合,并指出“traditional Chinese culture can perfectly meet modern science”,因此作者的目的是展示传统文化与现代科技可以很好地共存。
