A 17-year-old Califoria high school student Leo has designed and launched a free tutoring()
app,StudyBuddy Free,to bridge the academic support gap for low-income middle and high school
students across the US,a move that has already helped hundreds of teens get the one-on-one learning help
they could never afford before.
Growing up in a low-income community,Leo noticed many of his peers struggled to keep up with
schoolwork simply because private tutoring was out of their family's budget.School teachers are devoted
but can't give every student the extra time they need,so he came up with the idea of a free,easy-to-use app

weekends with the guidance of his school's computer science teacher.
The app connects low-income students with volunteer tutors, mostly college students and high school
honor roll students. After signing up,students can choose from 18 subjects including math, science,
English and SAT prep, and get matched with a tutor in 5 to 10 minutes. It features a live chat and digital
whiteboard for real-time learing, and all tutors go through basic background checks and short professional
training.
Launched three months ago,the app has attracted over 200 volunteer tutors and helped more than
600 students in 12 US states.Leo now plans to add more subjects and a college counseling section, and
work together with local schools to reach more students in need. His work has inspired other teens in the
community to join the project too."Education should be for everyone, not just those who can pay for extra
help,"Leo said."This app is just the start-I hope it can grow and help more kids realize their potential."

According to a recent study, laughter and joy may not be unique to humans.Ancestral forms of play and
laughter existed in other animals long before they did in humans.Jaak Panksepp,a professor of psychobiology at
Washingion State University and the author of the study, says,"Human laughter has deep roots in our animal past"
While humans are the only creatres that tell jokes,it has long been suspected that some animals like to laugh.
In 1872,Charles Darwin pointed out that"many kinds of monkeys,when pleased,make a sound,clearly analogous
to our laughter."In an experiment Panksepp had performed earlier,he found that whea chimpanzees play, they make
ooi心es strikingly(吲引人注目地)ike human laughter, and that dogs have a similar response.
Panksepp notes that children who are too young to laugh at jokes are likely to lough during noisy play.Panksepp
found that when young rats(老鼠)are playing, they also make sound止they chirp(发厚卿声),although people
can't hear them These chirps are far too high for bumans to hear.Researchers must usc special electronic receivers
that change the chirps to sounds that humans can hear
In studying laughter, scientists have focused mostly on related issues-humor,personality,health benefits,
social theory-rather than laughter itself.New research, however, shows that circuits for laughter exist in very
ancient parts of the human brain. The ability to laugh appears eadly in childhood,as anyone who has seen a baby
laugh knows.
Some scientists say other mammals also have many feelings, just like humans.Tecumseh Fitcb,a psycbology
teacher from Scotland's University of St Andrews, said:"Brain systems that create emotions schas.pain, joy and
fear work the same wyin bumans and other mammals. This tells us humans and other animal species are alike, and
this is veryimpran"Science has traditionally held that humor is only a human quality, and many scieatists believe
that more research is required before rats'chirping sounds can be considered real laughter.Panksepp believes that,
through a study of laughter in rats, the human sense of humor can be more fully understood.
32.What is the finding of the recent stud
A.Animals can also play jokes on others
B.Human laughter has its root in animal sounds.
C.Animals can hardly express happiness.
D.Humans actually developed from ancient animals.
33.What does the underlined word "analogous"in Paragraph 2 mean:
A.Similar.

CFamiliar.

A.They can't be heard by humans,
B.They sound like young ki达'soum达.
C.They are made during mats'fighting
D.They may affect human feelings.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Mammals have a particularly sensitive brain area
B.Humans have fully understood animals'behaviors.
