After 10 days, Lucas was still lost. This was bad news because the longer one is missing, the harder it is to find him. But something wonderful happened just in time! Lucas called out for help near the highway, and some people heard him! Then the helpers used drones (无人机) to find him and brought him to safety. The police shared the happy news on the Internet. “There is nothing serious with Lucas. Thanks to the great teamwork of our firemen and park keepers, now he’s with his family,” they said. Being alone in the forest is very dangerous. This is especially true because Lucas didn’t bring enough food with him. So how did he survive (生存)? “I just made sure I drank a lot of water every day. This happens to Internet service satellites when they come back to Earth. And this could be harmful to our atmosphere (大气层) and magnetosphere (磁层), which protect us. Right now, there are about 10,000 active satellites, and most of them can only be used once. Businesses are working as fast as possible to send thousands more into space. They plan to send up about one million satellites in the next thirty to forty years. These satellites help provide better Internet services and can make our lives more and more convenient. But they also create a lot of harmful waste that could cover our planet. The problem is that space can’t clean itself. The magnetosphere protects our atmosphere and keeps us alive. It is easy to think that the magnetosphere is too strong for humans to have any influence on it. However, this is not the case. Some scientists like me study how space rubbish can hurt our atmosphere and magnetosphere. Our research shows that rubbish from old satellites can harm our magnetosphere. Old satellites are huge and made of metal and other materials. The Earth is a ball magnet (磁铁) and we are covering it with metal rubbish. This can in turn weaken our magnetosphere and make it hard for life to live on Earth. Our magnetosphere is very important, so any pollution of it should be watched and studied. Space businesses should be cautious about sending up new satellites and take action to avoid pollution if they can’t show that their pollution will not hurt our atmosphere and magnetosphere. 11. What is one reason for the increasing number of satellites according to Paragraph 2? A. To discover more planets. B. To watch the changes of the Earth. C. To provide better Internet services. D. To improve communication among countries. 12. What can we infer from Paragraph 3? A. Humans can affect the magnetosphere. B. The magnetosphere can protect space rubbish. C. Few scientists study the magnetosphere. D. The magnetosphere becomes stronger over time. 13. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 4? A. Old satellites are mainly made of glass and metal. B. Metal rubbish can weaken the Earth’s magnetosphere. C. The magnetosphere makes the Earth a ball magnet. D. The magnetosphere has little influence on life on Earth. 14. What does the underlined word “cautious” mean in the last paragraph? A. Crazy. B. Angry. C. Careful. D. Worried. 15. What is the best title for the passage? A. Stop sending up satellites B. Avoid using metal to make satellites C. Create new reusable satellites D. Be responsible for sending up satellites 【答案】11. C 12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文主要探讨了废弃卫星产生的太空垃圾对地球大气层和磁层的危害,指出虽然卫星带来便利,但金属垃圾可能削弱保护地球的磁层,呼吁太空企业在发射卫星时应谨慎行事并承担责任。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第2段“These satellites help provide better Internet services and can make our lives more and more convenient.”可知,卫星数量增加的一个原因是为了提供更好的互联网服务。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第3段“It is easy to think that the magnetosphere is too strong for humans to have any influence on it. However, this is not the case...Our research shows that rubbish from old satellites can harm our magnetosphere.”可知,人类活动实际上能够影响磁层。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第4段“This can in turn weaken our magnetosphere and make it hard for life to live on Earth.”可知,覆盖地球的金属垃圾会削弱地球磁层。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据文章最后一段“Space businesses should be cautious about sending up new satellites and take action to avoid pollution”可知,企业应采取行动避免污染,因此太空企业发射新卫星时要小心、慎重,因此该词意为“小心的”,与Careful同义。 【15题详解】 最佳标题题。纵观全文,文章最后一段提出“Space businesses should be cautious about sending up new satellites and take action to avoid pollution”,核心在于呼吁企业对发射卫星负责,避免污染。 D Scientists at Stanford University have found a way to make the skin (皮肤) of living mice turn clear by rubbing (擦) a common yellow food dye (染料) called tartrazine (柠檬黄) on the mouse’s skin. The discovery could one day help doctors see inside human bodies without cutting them open. The scientists mixed tartrazine with water to make the liquid. When they tested this mixture on very thin slices of chicken, the chicken began to turn clear. Next, the researchers decided to try the coloring on the skin of living mice. First they got the hair out of the way. Then, they rubbed the liquid on the skin of the mice. In just a few minutes, the skin of the mice became see-through. Using the liquid, the scientists were able to see inside a mouse’s brain. When the liquid was washed off, the skin returned to normal. To understand how the new discovery works, it’s helpful to think about how light travels through different materials. Light travels in a straight line, unless it runs into something. Then, it usually bends (弯曲). Glass is easy to see through because light only takes a slight bend when it goes through the glass. But skin isn’t like glass. Skin is made of many different parts, like water, fat and so on. These different materials make it hard to see through skin. Tartrazine makes the watery parts of the skin more like the other areas. When the light mostly bends the same way, the skin becomes see-through. Guosong Hong, one of the leaders of the research, says that if something similar could be made to work on humans, it could lead to exciting medical development. The scientists say more work needs to be done before a similar method can be used on humans. The dye only works on thin skin, and human skin is much thicker than the skin of mice. 16. What did the scientists find at Stanford University? A. A way to treat skin problems. B. A way to make the mice grow quickly. C. A way to help doctors cut human bodies open. D. A way to make the skin of living mice become clear. 17. How was the result of the test according to paragraph 2? A. Unexpected. B. Meaningless. C. Incorrect. D. Successful. 18. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How light travels through glass. B. The importance of tartrazine. C. How tartrazine makes the skin see-through. D. The difference between skin and glass. 19. What is the value of the research at Stanford University? A. It’s only useful for animal skin studies. B. It could improve medical study. C. It helps understand light and materials better. D. It provides a way to make glass bend. 20. In which part of the newspaper can you find the text? A. Science. B. Sport. C. Culture. D. History. 【答案】16. D 17. D 18. C 19. B 20. Be responsible for sending up satellites D Scientists at Stanford University have found a way to make the skin (皮肤) of living mice turn clear by rubbing (擦) a common yellow food dye (染料) called tartrazine (柠檬黄) on the mouse’s skin. A. Science. B. Sport. C. Culture. D.
