On March 29, 2026, a historic moment happened at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in Portugal (葡萄牙). A French rider won the championship (冠军)on a motorcycle from the Chinese brand “Zhang Xue Motor (机车)”. This marked the first time a Chinese brand (品牌)had succeeded in this top-tier race, breaking the long-standing monopoly held by European and Japanese brands.
The man behind the achievement is 39-year-old Zhang Xue. Born into a poor family in Hunan, he left school at 14 to work as a mechanic (机械师). His hands were always covered in oil, but his heart was filled with a dream-to build the world’s best Chinese motorcycle. Five years later, he famously rode a broken-down bike for over 100 kilometers in the rain, just to get a TV reporter’s attention and show his skills.
In 2024, Zhang set up his new company in Chongqing. He believed that without self-developed engines (发动机), Chinese brands would forever be dependent on others. Even though some people laughed at him and said a simple Chinese mechanic couldn’t compete on the world stage, Zhang and his team worked tirelessly, pouring all their energy into research and development.
Now, his dream has come true. Needs for his motorcycles have increased greatly. However, Zhang has turned down many investors (投资者)and kept his team in fight mode to avoid distractions (打扰). “I don’t care about getting rich quickly,” he said. “This victory is not the end, but a new beginning.” His journey proves that you can do amazing things if you really love what you do and never give up, even if you are just a common person.

Born and raised in Chicago, Brian first visited China in 1984, then received a scholarship (奖学金) from the Chinese government and came to study in Beijing. During his stay, he fell in love with Chinese culture and wanted to share it with others.
After working and travelling in over 100 countries, Brian left his job, sold his house, and in 2004, moved to China with his family to start a new life. They chose Xizhou, a quaint (古色古香的) town near Dali, as their new home.
“I’m a super fan of China’s traditional buildings. Xizhou is a beautiful town with lots of them from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The traditions here are as alive as ever, and the local people treat me like family,” said Brian.
With support from the Dali government, Brian spent all his money repairing a traditional Bai-style house into a hotel for foreign tourists, now known as the Linden Centre. This hotel isn’t just for tourists; it also offers international educational programs to European and American schools. Half of the hotel is open to the public, creating a space where more people can meet and communicate with local villagers. Additionally, it provides free English lessons for the villagers once a week.

Pang Zhongwang is a remarkable young man from Hebei, China. Born into a poor family, he faced many challenges. His father suffers from schizophrenia (精神分裂症), making normal communication a challenge. His mother has a congenital (先天性的) disease, unable to move easily. What’s more, Pang himself had a congenital heart disease.
Despite all the hardships, Pang never gave up. He studied hard and helped his mother with daily chores. To ease the family’s financial burden, he collected recyclables after school. When he needed a heart operation at 6, neighbours and the community raised money for him, and the operation was successful.
In 2017, his efforts paid off. He scored 684 in the college entrance exam and earned bonus (额外的) points, entering Tsinghua University. At Tsinghua, he politely refused personal donations, living on scholarships and part-time jobs. Now a doctoral student, he focuses on scientific research, determined to contribute to China’s precision instrument field.
