After getting my college degree, I chose to follow my heart. I went straight to graduate school to study the social problems that truly interested me. For nearly ten years, I shared my belief with people around me, from my classmates to young people I met at public lectures. “Follow your passion,” I would advise them. “You can settle practical job matters later.” I held this belief firmly and never doubted its value until I began to carry out research on this popular career advice for my new book.
As a sociologist, I interviewed large numbers of college students and workers from different family backgrounds. Some were just stepping into the job market, while others had worked for several years. My research findings took me by surprise. Surveys show the idea of following passion is widely accepted as a career guide, especially among those facing unstable jobs. Its supporters believe passion can offer workers lasting motivation and a strong sense of inner satisfaction, which money cannot easily bring.
However, my study paints a different picture. Chasing passion does not always bring the satisfaction people expect. Worse still, it may fuel overwork and help keep social unfairness. The big problem lies in unequal starting conditions. Wealthy young people can wait for ideal positions instead of taking unsatisfying jobs out of pressure. They enjoy family financial support and can make use of parents’ social connections when hunting for jobs. In contrast, working-class and first-generation college graduates rarely have such resources. If they choose to follow their passion, they are more likely to end up in low-paid, low-skill positions.
Colleges and career advisers often advocate “follow your passion” for everyone, yet they seldom notice those unequal starting conditions. Besides, employers also gain benefits from passionate workers, who are willing to devote themselves without demanding higher pay, even giving up salary or spare time for jobs they love.
4. What made the author rethink the “follow your passion” advice?
A. His own unsatisfying job experience. B. Suggestions from career consultants.
C. Pressure from poor college graduates. D. His exploration of the career tip.
5. What does the author imply about the passion idea?
A. It may produce undesirable side-effects. B. It helps remove unfairness in job markets.
C. It can provide workers with lasting motivation. D. It should be popularized among young workers.
6. What causes different results for passion-driven job hunters?
A. Variations in family-related resources. B. Various requirements from employers.
C. Limited career guidance from colleges. D. Different levels of personal passion.
7. What is the main message of the passage?
A. Working-class graduates should look for high-skill jobs.
B. Employers ought to provide higher pay for workers.
C. Following passion is not a one-size-fits-all career suggestion.
D. Young people should quit chasing their passion in job-hunting.
D 5. A 6. A 7. C

根据第一段“I held this belief firmly and never doubted its value until I began to carry out research on this popular career advice for my new book.(我一直坚定秉持这个想法,从未质疑它的价值,直到我为新书开始研究这条热门的职业建议)”可知,是作者对这条职业建议的探究促使他重新思考“追随热爱”这个说法。
根据第三段“However, my study paints a different picture. Chasing passion does not always bring the satisfaction people expect. Worse still, it may fuel overwork and help keep social unfairness.(然而,我的研究呈现出不一样的情况。追逐热爱并不总能带来人们预想的满足感。更糟的是,它可能助长过度加班,并维系社会不公)”可知,追随热爱的观念可能产生不好的副作用。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The big problem lies in unequal starting conditions. Wealthy young people can wait for ideal positions instead of taking unsatisfying jobs out of pressure. They enjoy family financial support and can make use of parents’ social connections when hunting for jobs. In contrast, working-class and first-generation college graduates rarely have such resources.(核心问题在于起点条件并不平等。家境优渥的年轻人可以等待理想岗位,不必迫于压力接受不满意的工作。他们有家庭的经济支持,找工作时还能利用父母的人脉资源。相比之下,工薪家庭以及第一代大学毕业生几乎没有这类资源)”可知,和家庭相关的资源差异造成追随热爱的求职者结局不同。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“For nearly ten years, I shared my belief with people around me, from my classmates to young people I met at public lectures. “Follow your passion,” I would advise them. “You can settle practical job matters later.” I held this belief firmly and never doubted its value until I began to carry out research on this popular career advice for my new book.(近十年来,我向身边的人分享着自己的信念,从同学到在公开讲座上结识的年轻人。我总是劝他们:“追随你的热情吧,以后再处理实际的工作问题。” 我始终坚定地持有这一信念,从未怀疑其价值,直到我开始为我的新书研究这一广为流传的职业建议时)”以及文章指出“追随热爱”受很多人推崇,但它忽略了求职者家庭资源起点不均的现实,并不适合所有人,C选项“追随热爱并不是一条放之四海而皆准的职业建议”概括主旨。
C
Across the country, one in six children miss 15 or more school days each year. Education officials have strongly criticized the huge loss of teaching time caused by frequent absences.
Students who are repeatedly absent generally perform worse academically, since they miss plenty of in-class instruction. In 2015, the U.S. Secretary of Education responded to this worrying situation, calling on local organizations to guarantee every student’s daily attendance and better school performance. In his open letter, he pointed out that missing 10 percent of school days annually, whether excused by parents or not, is a major contributor to poor academic results.
Concerns over student attendance are reasonable. After all, teachers can hardly educate students who never turn up for class. However, social scientists raise a thought-provoking question: could the attendance problem reflect deeper family and community struggles rather than merely missed lessons? Some students may be forced to leave home, feel unsafe in their neighbourhood, or suffer from health conditions.
Researchers carried out a study exploring the link between two kinds of absences and children’s school performance. Their findings are surprising: parent-excused absences barely damage learning. Students with 15 — 18 excused absences but zero unexcused ones achieve test scores comparable to peers with perfect attendance. By contrast, students with even a single unexcused absence tend to fall behind.
Unexcused absence, researchers argue, serves as a clear indicator of hidden family difficulties ranging from financial stress to medical issues. It signals how off-campus troubles affect kids’ progress, instead of being the main cause of underachievement itself.
Traditional attendance policies treat excused and unexcused absences equally, holding schools and families fully responsible. They suppose any absence hurts study and that schools can solve the problem simply by cutting absences. Yet the research proves neither assumption correct. Such rules unfairly punish families trapped in life hardships and place heavy pressure on schools. Therefore, researchers recommend treating unexcused absence as a warning signal to deliver timely support for vulnerable (脆弱的) children and families.
8. What do U.S. education officials traditionally believe?
A. Only unexcused absences affect grades. B. Family troubles cause student absences.
C. Strict rules can solve family problems. D. Absence generally harms students’ studies.
9. What is the key message put forward by social scientists?
A. Teachers fail to give sufficient lessons to students.
B. Student absences may result from hidden life troubles.
C. Poor health leads to frequent student absences.
D. School management leads to attendance problems.
10. What can we learn from the study on two types of absences?
A. All school absences will make students fall behind in studies.
B. Students with excused absences get much lower test scores.
C. Some students with parent-approved absences still do well in tests.
D. Unexcused absences hardly connect with family difficulties.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards traditional attendance policies?
A. Fully supportive. B. Totally opposed. C. Strongly tolerant. D. Partly doubtful.
D 9. B 10. C 11. B

根据第二段“In 2015, the U.S. secretary of education responded to this worrying situation, calling on local organizations to guarantee every student’s daily attendance and better school performance. In his open letter, he pointed out that missing 10 percent of school days annually, whether excused by parents or not, is a major contributor to poor academic results.(2015年,美国教育部长针对这一令人担忧的情况作出回应,呼吁地方机构保障每位学生每日到校上课,提升学业表现。他在公开信中指出,每年缺课10%,无论是否获得家长许可,都是学业不佳的主要诱因)”可知,美国教育官员传统上认为缺课通常会损害学生的学习。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“However, social scientists raise a thought-provoking question: could the attendance problem reflect deeper family and community struggles rather than merely missed lessons? Some students may be forced to leave home, feel unsafe in their neighbourhood, or suffer from health conditions.(然而,社会科学家提出了一个引人深思的问题:出勤问题是否反映了更深层的家庭与社区困境,而不只是落下课程?一些学生可能被迫离家、在居住环境里没有安全感或是身患疾病)”可知,社会科学家提出的核心观点是学生缺课可能源于潜藏的生活难题。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Their findings are surprising: parent-excused absences barely damage learning. Students with 15 — 18 excused absences but zero unexcused ones achieve test scores comparable to peers with perfect attendance.(他们的研究结果出人意料:经家长准许的缺课几乎不会损害学习。有15至18次获准缺课、没有无故缺课的学生,考试成绩和全勤的同龄人不相上下)”可知,一些有家长许可缺课的学生依旧可以在考试中取得不错的成绩。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Traditional attendance policies treat excused and unexcused absences equally, holding schools and families fully responsible. They suppose any absence hurts study and that schools can solve the problem simply by cutting absences. Yet the research proves neither assumption correct.(传统出勤政策同等看待获准缺课和无故缺课,让学校和家庭承担全部责任。这些政策认为任何缺课都会伤害学习,学校只要减少缺课就能解决问题。但研究证明这两个设想都不正确)”可知,作者对传统出勤政策持完全反对的态度。
D
“The world’s environment is surprisingly healthy. Discuss.” If that were an examination topic, most students would tear it apart, offering a long list of complaints: from local smog to global climate change, from the cutting-down of forests to the extinction of species. The list would largely be accurate, the concern justified. Yet the students who should be given the highest marks would actually be those who agreed with the statement. The surprise is how good things are, not how bad.
After all, the world’s population has more than tripled during this century, and world output has risen hugely, so you would expect the earth itself to have been affected. Indeed, if people lived, consumed and produced things in the same way as they did in 1900 (or 1950, or indeed 1980), the world by now would be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, harmful and dangerous.
But they don’t. The reasons why they don’t, and why the environment has not been ruined, have to do with prices, technological innovation, social change and government regulation in response to popular pressure.
Raw materials have not run out and show no sign of doing so. Logically, one day they must: the planet is a finite place. Yet it is also very big, and man is very creative. What has happened is that every time a material seems to be running short, the price has risen and, in response, people have looked for new sources of supply, tried to find ways to use less of the material, or looked for a new substitute. For this reason prices for energy and for minerals have fallen in real terms during the century. The same is true for food. Prices fluctuate, in response to harvests, natural disasters and political instability; and when they rise, it takes some time before new sources of supply become available. But they always do, assisted by new farming and crop technology. The long-term trend has been downwards.
It is where prices and markets do not operate properly that this favorable trend begins to stumble, and the genuine problems arise. Markets cannot always keep the environment healthy. If no one owns the resource concerned, no one has an interest in conserving it or fostering it: fish are the best example of this.
12. What stops the environment from being destroyed according to the text?
A. Strict international resource-exploitation bans.
B. Slow growth of the global human population.
C. Changed patterns of production and consumption.
D. People's willingness to give up material consumption.
13. What does the underlined word “fluctuate” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Remain unchanged. B. Change accordingly.
C. Rise sharply. D. Drop steadily.
14. Why does the author mention fish in the last paragraph?
A. To show that fish resources can be easily renewed.
B. To show new technology helps protect sea creatures.
C. To warn people of the danger of overfishing worldwide.
D. To prove markets fail without clear ownership of resources.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Population Growth and Its Influence on Earth
B. Serious Environmental Problems We Are Facing
C. Market Mechanism and Environmental Protection
D. New Technology: A Solution to Resource Shortage
C 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第二段中的“Indeed, if people lived, consumed and produced things in the same way as they did in 1900 (or 1950, or indeed 1980), the world by now would be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, harmful and dangerous.(事实上,如果人们还按照1900年(或是1950年,甚至1980年)的方式去生活、消费和生产,如今的世界就会变成一个相当糟糕的地方:臭气熏天、肮脏不堪、有害且危机四伏。)”和第三段中的“But they don’t. The reasons why they don’t, and why the environment has not been ruined, have to do with prices, technological innovation, social change and government regulation in response to popular pressure.(但人们并没有那样做。人们不再那样生活生产、环境也没有遭到毁坏,其原因和价格、技术革新、社会变革,以及顺应民众压力而出台的政府监管有关。)”可知,生产与消费模式的转变阻止了环境遭到进一步破坏。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中画线词“fluctuate”后面的“in response to harvests, natural disasters and political instability; and when they rise, it takes some time before new sources of supply become available(受收成情况、自然灾害与政局动荡影响;而当价格上涨之后,新的供应来源要过一段时间才能获得。)”
根据最后一段中的“It is where prices and markets do not operate properly that this favorable trend begins to stumble, and the genuine problems arise. Markets cannot always keep the environment healthy. If no one owns the resource concerned, no one has an interest in conserving it or fostering it: fish are the best example of this.(正是在价格和市场无法正常运转的地方,这种有利趋势才开始受挫,真正的问题才会出现。

根据空前的“I was a beginner with just 14 jumps”可知,作者跳伞次数很少,尚处于新手阶段,达不到取得执照的标准。
A. fortune运气;B. silence寂静;C. danger危险;D. nature自然。
根据上文“The first jump went perfectly. Floating in the air, I had a minute of perfect peace.”
A. pulled away拉开距离;B. turned up出现;C. ran out耗尽;D. moved on继续前进。
根据空后的“the ground was rushing up too fast”可知,地面快速靠近,说明作者实际所处的高度比自己以为的要低。
A. hesitated犹豫;B. refused拒绝;C. rushed急忙;D. managed设法完成。
A. wrapped缠绕;B. hung悬挂;C. rested搁置;D. pressed按压。
A. passed经过;B. wore磨损;C. cleared清除;D. slipped溜走。

A. rope绳索;B. line线;C. string细绳;D. chute降落伞。根据上文第三段“since opening a chute (降落伞) needs space”以及空前的“Then the reserve parachute, which opens when the main one ________, saved me.”

A. signal信号;B. rule规则;C. excuse借口;D. test测试。

Niko Wang runs his own marketing business, allowing him to visit museums during weekdays. Such ____36____ (flexible) is rare in China, where most workers are tied to office hours. China’s history museums used to feature old displays in ____43____ (poor) lit cases. Now visitors are treated to cutting-edge exhibitions.
Booking entries for China’s most popular museums作主语,要将be动词变成第三人称单数形式is。
在how引导的宾语从句中,peel back是谓语动词,________ (reveal) relics at each stratum (地层)是该谓语的目的,要填动词不定式to reveal,作目的状语。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to invite you to our agritourism trip this Saturday, an activity that combines agriculture with fun and shows you where your food comes from.
Unlike ordinary sightseeing, agritourism stresses learning by doing. Firstly, we’ll gather at the school gate at 8:00 a.m. Secondly, the activity includes attending a workshop on organic farming, planting and harvesting crops, feeding animals and so on. Lastly, since we’ll be outdoors for hours, bring a hat and a reusable bottle to cut waste.
We’d be delighted if you could join us. Looking forward to your reply!

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn’t understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show. Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.
Para 1: During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu.

Para 2: After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 1:
During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. They kept cheering loudly as he performed punches, kicks and graceful stances. They asked him to teach them basic moves, and Li Ming patiently demonstrated step by step, using simple English to explain each action’s meaning. When he struggled to express himself clearly, his new friends listened carefully and helped him find the right words. For the first time, Li Ming forgot his shyness and accent, feeling proud to share his culture. Practice became a joyful time where they learned from each other.
Para 2:
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Many classmates came up to him, praising his wonderful performance and asking about Chinese kung fu. Some even invited him to join their conversations and hang out after school. During group work, he dared to speak up confidently, and his ideas were well-received. He no longer felt left out; instead, he found a sense of belonging. Li Ming realized that his unique culture was a bridge to connect with others, and courage and sharing could help him fit in easily.
