Hawking was born on 8th January 1942 in Oxford, England. He was the eldest of four children. His parents loved learning and both went to the University of Oxford. Hawking was born in the middle of the Second World War when London was a very dangerous place. His mother moved away from London to make sure that he would be safe when he was born.
Hawking had two sisters and one brother. People who knew Hawking’s family thought that they were strange. Unlike others, they would each read a book when they ate meals and they didn't talk.
When Hawking was young, he loved to lie on the grass in the garden and watch the stars with his mother. Hawking liked playing board games and making model planes and boats. He even built a computer out of old clock and telephone parts when he was just 16 years old.
Just like his parents, Hawking went to the University of Oxford. He went there at the age of 17 because he had passed his exams a year early. He said that the exams were nothing more than a piece of cake. When he was at the university, he became very interested in black holes. At the age of 21, he had a disease called ALS. However, this didn’t stop his studies. He used a wheelchair to move around and a computer with a voice synthesizer (语音合成器) to talk. His book, A Brief History of Time, is very popular. In this digital age, when we need to learn something new, we often turn to online tools. Two common choices are search tools and AI chatbots (聊天机器人). But which one helps us learn better? A new study offers some interesting answers.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania invited over 10,000 people to research different topics, including how to grow a vegetable garden and how to lead a healthier life. Some used traditional search tools, while others used AI chatbots. After that, researchers asked them to give advice to a friend based on what they had learnt.
The study found that people who used search tools developed deeper knowledge and gave more helpful and thoughtful advice. However, people who used AI chatbots didn’t understand the topics as deeply. Even when AI chatbots provided links to websites, very few people clicked on them. This means they didn’t want to explore further information on their own.
Why does this happen? When we use search tools, we have to visit different websites, compare materials, and organize all the information by ourselves. This process helps us build deeper knowledge. However, AI chatbots offer ready-made answers directly, so we don’t need to think as hard. This saves time and effort, yet it may stop us from thinking independently (独立地) and deeply.
Does this mean we should give up using AI chatbots? Not necessarily. Experts point out that the value of a tool depends on how we use it. If we use an AI chatbot, we should try to check its answers by clicking on the links or doing our own search.
Online tools can greatly support our studies. Still, independent thinking and active exploration are always the key to real and lasting learning.
12. Why did researchers do the study?
A. To show the advantages of AI chatbots.
B. To find out how people do online research.
C. To show the development of learning tools.
D. To find out which online tool helps people learn better.
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The study result. B. The study process.
C. The researchers’ advice. D. The researchers' prediction.
14. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Thinking hard. B. Organizing information.
C. Using AI chatbots. D. Visiting different websites.
15. What does the writer think of AI chatbots?
A. They’re not useful for learning.
B. People can depend on them fully.
C. He doesn’t care about them at all.
D. They’re helpful if people use them properly.

His story shows us that a strong mind can always find a way.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D
