W: I agree. I know it’s hard to keep the water exactly the right temperature in this lab, but you can see the difference in the fish.
M: Yeah, we’ve had some differences in the water temperature, especially at night.
W: I think we should write our lab report as soon as possible.
M: I’m afraid I don’t agree. Maybe we’ll get clearer results if we give the experiment more time.
W: OK. I see your point. Are these the notes you took yesterday?
M: Yes.
W: Do you mind if I copy them? I can’t find my notebook.
M: Go right ahead.

【原文】Good morning, everyone. Today, let’s talk about a remarkable invention from MIT. Engineers have created a robot that looks like a bird, but can dive into water, swim around, and then fly back into the sky. Unlike traditional underwater robots that remain hidden, this one can move freely between air and water, making it ideal for exploring coastal areas. The research team, led by mechanical engineer Raphael Zufferey, studied nearly 100 species of diving birds, including puffins, to understand their wing movements, diving angles, and tail functions. By copying these natural designs, they built a lightweight, waterproof robot that can perform complex motions. Currently, the robot is still being tested in the lab, but the researchers are optimistic. Their ultimate goal is to send it over longer distances to monitor ocean habitats, which could greatly reduce the need for expensive research ships. They believe this robot will open new doors for marine biology, especially in hard-to-reach areas where traditional equipment fails.

I’ve always taken pride in being organized. But my daughter Lizzie’s graduation week proved otherwise. Between my end-of-the-year teaching responsibilities and preparing for her graduation ceremony, my home fell into total disorganization. Each time I rushed out of the door, I whispered to myself: No one will ever know. I’ll fix it tomorrow.
Before heading to the graduation ceremony, I glanced back at the clutter and persuaded myself again.
At 3:00 am, exhausted but happy, we finally drove home. A security car sped past. My son Adam stood outside our front door, looking worried. “I called the security car,” he explained. “When I came home, the place seemed broken into.”
My husband, still catching his breath, immediately asked how long the security staff had stayed to check the house, and Adam replied that they had spent around half an hour conducting a full inspection.
Later, I learned that the security team had gone through every inch of our messy house. At that moment, I could picture the security guards driving away, shaking their heads. I can’t imagine living like that: Food everywhere. Clothes thrown all over. The whole scene like a hoarder (囤积癖) situation.
My face burned. All the weekend, I had comforted myself with the lie that my chaos was private. But here was the truth: Disorder has a way of revealing itself. The people who saw my mess weren’t judging a busy mother — they were judging a life they assumed was always out of control.
Walking upstairs at last, I whispered to myself: Why did I think no one would ever know?
That night taught me something deeper. The messes we try to hide — whether in our homes or our hearts — always find a way of being seen. The true inner peace doesn’t come from hiding them perfectly, but from letting others understand the full picture of who we truly are.
24. What does the underlined word “clutter” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. A shortage of budget. B. A pile of papers.
C. A collection of valuables. D. A state of disorder.
25. Why did Adam call the security car?
A. He found the door was left unlocked.
B. He suspected something was wrong.
C. He noticed some expensive items missing.
D. He wanted to get the furniture removed.
26. How did the author probably feel before going upstairs?
A. Relieved. B. Amused. C. Embarrassed. D. Confused.
27. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Perfection is not beyond reach.
B. It’s never too late to fix a mistake.
C. True comfort lies in accepting our real selves.
D. Keeping organized is vital to maintaining self-image.
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. C
根据第一段中“Between my end-of-the-year teaching responsibilities and preparing for her graduation ceremony, my home fell into total disorganization.( 在年底教学任务和准备她毕业典礼之间,我的家彻底乱成一团。)”以及后文反复出现的“messy house”、“chaos”、“disorder”等对应表达,可知,前文交代家里因为忙碌变得一团糟,第二段作者出发前回头看了一眼家里的clutter,再次自我安慰。由此可推断clutter指代“杂乱、混乱的状态”,与D项A state of disorder“一种混乱的状态”含义一致。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中““I called the security car,” he explained. “When I came home, the place seemed broken into.”(“我叫了安保车,”他解释道,“我回到家时,房子好像被人闯入了。”)”可知,亚当回家后觉得家里看起来像是被人破门而入了,也就是怀疑家里出了状况、不对劲,所以叫了安保车。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中“My face burned. All the weekend, I had comforted myself with the lie that my chaos was private.( 我的脸瞬间发烫。整个周末,我都用“我的混乱是私事”的谎言安慰自己。)”可知,作者一直以为家里的混乱只有自己知道,结果安保人员彻底检查了乱糟糟的房子,她想到对方会怎么看待自己,脸都发烫了,可见她当时非常尴尬。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The true inner peace doesn’t come from hiding them perfectly, but from letting others understand the full picture of who we truly are.(真正的内心平静并非来自完美地隐藏它们,而是让他人了解我们最真实的完整面貌。)”可知,作者通过这件事领悟到:我们试图隐藏的混乱总会暴露,真正的内心平静不是完美掩饰,而是接纳完整真实的自己,也让别人看见真实的我们。
C
Fatigue (疲劳) is a common daily challenge for children with developmental disabilities, often limiting their ability to fully participate in school, play, and other everyday activities. However, a recent study by researchers at Virginia Tech offers a hopeful message: children who are more physically active tend to experience less fatigue in their daily lives.
Published in the journal Behavioral Sciences, the study examined the complex relationship between physical activity and fatigue in children with developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, comparing them with typically developing peers (同龄人). Researchers collected valuable information from both children and their parents through detailed questionnaires. Among children with cerebral palsy, parents reported that those who spent more time being active faced fewer fatigue-related challenges.
Importantly, the study gathered reports from parents and children separately, allowing the research team to compare how children experienced fatigue with how parents observed it. The approach revealed clear differences between the two perspectives. Parents of children with disabilities were generally far more likely to recognize signs of fatigue than the children themselves.
“One of the reasons we included both parent and child perspectives is that fatigue can be difficult for children to describe and understand,” said Stephanie DeLuca, senior author of the study. “Parents often have a broader view of how fatigue affects a child’s daily activities. Bringing those perspectives together gives us a more complete understanding of what families are experiencing.”
The project was led by Dr. Kavya Iyer and brought together researchers and pediatric doctors with complementary (互补的) skills. By combining scientific research with practical clinical experience, the team was able to better explore ways to improve long-term health outcomes for children with special needs.
Understanding fatigue is essential because it shapes how children engage in healthy habits that support long-term well-being. “By bringing together researchers and specialists, we were able to better understand how physical activity and fatigue interact,” Iyer explained. “Our goal is to inform future research and support families, therapists, and healthcare providers.”
28. What does the study show about active children with developmental disabilities?
A. They suffer less daily fatigue. B. They perform better in school tasks.
C. They handle life challenges better. D. They experience more energy boost.
29. Why were parents involved in the study?
A. To evaluate their parenting skills.
B. To supply a broader evaluation perspective.
C. To guide children to express their feelings.
D. To raise their awareness in fatigue detection.
30. What can be inferred about the research team?
A. They relied on long-term historical data.
B. They cured children with special needs.
C. They combined multiple professional strengths.
D. They prioritized academic output over practice.
31. What is the purpose of the study according to Iyer?
A. To design specific workout plans.
B. To replace traditional treatment.
C. To encourage intense daily physical exercise.
D. To provide practical support for target groups.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. D
【解析】

【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“However, a recent study by researchers at Virginia Tech offers a hopeful message: children who are more physically active tend to experience less fatigue in their daily lives.(然而,弗吉尼亚理工大学研究人员近期的一项研究带来了一个令人振奋的消息:运动量更大的孩子在日常生活中往往疲劳感更轻。)”可知,患有发育障碍且爱活动的孩子日常疲劳更少。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““One of the reasons we included both parent and child perspectives is that fatigue can be difficult for children to describe and understand,” said Stephanie DeLuca, senior author of the study. “Parents often have a broader view of how fatigue affects a child’s daily activities. Bringing those perspectives together gives us a more complete understanding of what families are experiencing.”(该研究的资深作者斯蒂芬妮·德卢卡说:“我们同时收集家长和孩子两方看法的原因之一,是孩子很难描述、理解疲劳这种感受。家长往往能更全面地看待疲劳对孩子日常活动造成的影响。将这两种视角结合起来,能让我们更完整地了解这些家庭所面临的情况。”)”可知,邀请家长参与研究是为了提供更全面的评估视角。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The project was led by Dr. Kavya Iyer and brought together researchers and pediatric doctors with complementary (互补的) skills. By combining scientific research with practical clinical experience, the team was able to better explore ways to improve long-term health outcomes for children with special needs. (该项目由卡维娅·艾耶博士牵头,汇集了专业互补的研究人员与儿科医生。团队将科学研究与实际临床经验相结合,从而更好地探寻能够改善有特殊需求儿童长期健康状况的方法。)”可知,该研究团队融合了多种专业优势。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的““By bringing together researchers and specialists, we were able to better understand how physical activity and fatigue interact,” Iyer explained. “Our goal is to inform future research and support families, therapists, and healthcare providers.”(“通过把研究人员和专业人士汇集在一起,我们能够更好地明白体力活动和疲劳如何相互影响,”艾耶解释说。“我们的目标是为未来的研究提供参考,并且支持家庭、治疗师以及医护人员。”)”可知,这项研究的目的是为相关群体提供实用帮助。
D
In some cities, pigeons are unappreciated. They search for thrown particles of food and stare blankly at passersby. It’s led some people to falsely believe that pigeons aren’t very intelligent or worthy of the space they take up.
But it’s time to change our thinking. Humans domesticated (驯化) pigeons thousands of years ago, and part of the reason why they gather around humans is that they’ve lost much of their survival instinct (本能). Beyond even that, they’re highly intelligent creatures that don’t get nearly the credit they deserve.
A study published in 2015 noted that the visual systems used by pigeons have a lot in common with those of humans. The researchers decided to put that visual recognition to the test in a high-risk situation. Pigeons were trained with food reinforcement to recognize the difference between images of malignant and benign (恶性与良性) human tissue samples. Once they were up to speed, they proved to be incredibly accurate at identifying the cancerous images.
What’s especially fascinating is that the researchers were able to demonstrate real learning and pattern recognition by the birds. They were able to generalize their learnings, meaning they weren’t just memorizing the correct answers to the images they trained on. Once trained, they still kept the accuracy when looking at novel images they’d never seen before.
The study found that the average trained pigeon was about 85% effective in identifying cancerous images. However, when pigeons were grouped together four at a time — called “flock sourcing” — their accuracy rose to a staggering 99%.
“The birds’ successes and difficulties suggest that pigeons are well-suited to help us better understand human medical image perception,” the researchers concluded, “and may also prove useful in performance assessment and development of medical imaging hardware, image processing, and image analysis tools.”
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1?
A. To show pigeons’ city behaviors.
B. To explain why pigeons are clever.
C. To introduce a myth about pigeons.
D. To state pigeons have lost their instincts.
33. What does the 2015 study reveal about pigeons’ visuality?
A. They can recognize cancerous tissue samples.
B. They have better eyesight than humans do.
C. They see farther than other bird species.
D. They can identify images faster through food rewards.
34. What does the flock sourcing data suggest about pigeons?
A. Individual pigeons are incapable.
B. Four pigeons are the best work group.
C. Pigeons’ ability remains to be unknown.
D. Collective work improves their performance.
35. What is the researchers’ attitude to using pigeons in medicine?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. B
【解析】

If you are a parent, whether you believe in strict boundaries or prefer total freedom in parenting, as with most things in life, it’s all about balance. ____36____ It is a new and modern parenting style that is becoming more and more popular.
What is lighthouse parenting?
Lighthouse parenting is a new parenting style that focuses on the most important aspects of parenting. It is all about maintaining the balance between providing your children with guidance, love, encouragement, and protection. ____37____
Some parenting styles, such as helicopter parenting, are less about giving your children freedom and allowing them to experience things on their own. Lighthouse parenting, as the name suggests, believes in being there for your children like a lighthouse is there at night, available and present when needed. ____38____ You should allow your children to grow, learn to be independent and develop their abilities. The key points of this parenting style are loving unconditionally, setting the right boundaries, provisioning support and guidance, and encouraging an open dialogue. With this kind of environment, children can feel confident and supported.
Benefits of lighthouse parenting
There is too much information out there for parents nowadays. But lighthouse parenting seems to be more direct and balanced.
____39____ That is because they were given the tools to be independent, to understand the world, and to adapt to the society. They aren’t scared of making mistakes and also take responsibility for themselves. Their parents are less tired, as they are able to take a step back and be there for their children more in the background. ____40____ This creates an environment where both children and parents can thrive and enjoy their relationship.
A. It puts too much pressure on parents.
B. And that’s the core of lighthouse parenting.
C. However, love and support are always there when needed.
D. Parents should attempt to completely let go in their parenting.
E. Yet you don’t make decisions and provide solutions all the time.
F. And it also allows them to make mistakes and learn on their own.
G. Children raised in this style can become healthy and well-adjusted adults.

Every morning, Anna walked into the meat factory with a smile. She worked on the production line, packing meat. Though the job was boring and the air was cold, she never lost her warm heart. She was friendly to everyone around her. Because of this, her workmates all loved her. They said Anna was the warmest person in the factory.
Anna always greeted the security guard, Mr. Lee, at the gate. “Good morning, Mr. Lee!” she often said in a cheerful voice. And every afternoon, when she left, she would wave and say, “Goodbye, Mr. Lee! See you tomorrow!” Mr. Lee always nodded and smiled back. To him, Anna was like the morning sun in his lonely life. He had worked there for over ten years, and most workers passed him without a word. But Anna was different. She remembered his name. She asked about his wife’s cough. She once brought him a cup of hot tea on a freezing morning. Those small things stayed in his heart.
One Tuesday afternoon, Anna was asked to check some boxes in the cold storage room alone. It was a huge room, with the temperature maintained at minus eighteen degrees. She put on her thick coat and went inside. The door closed behind her with a heavy click. She checked the boxes carefully, writing down numbers on her small notebook. But when she finished and tried to open the door, it would not move. She pushed and pushed, but the door was locked. She shouted for help, but nobody heard. Everyone had gone home. The factory was silent. The cold began to bite her fingers and face. She felt sleepy and scared.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lee was at the gate, waiting for Anna’s “Goodbye”. Time passed second by second and Mr. Lee felt something was wrong. Anna never left without saying goodbye. He walked to the production line. It was empty. He called her name, but only silence answered. He checked the washroom, the dining hall, and the changing room. Nobody was there. His heart beat fast.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】例文
Then Mr. Lee remembered the cold storage room. His heart nearly stopped. He ran to the guard room, grabbed the key, and rushed back. He pushed the key into the lock and turned it hard. With a heavy click, the door opened. There was Anna, lying on the floor, her lips turning purple and her body trembling. Mr. Lee knelt down, took off his coat, and wrapped it around her. Then he carried her out and called for help. Soon, other guards came, covering her with blankets and giving her warm water. She was saved just in time.
Later, Anna thanked Mr. Lee with tears in her eyes. “You saved my life,” she said, holding his hand. Mr. Lee shook his head. “No, Anna. It was you who saved yourself. Your daily friendliness kept you in my heart. I remembered your ‘Goodbye’. That is why I came.” Anna understood then that small acts of friendliness are never wasted. They plant seeds of hope. She realized that when we treat others with warmth, we protect ourselves. A simple “Hello” may one day become the light that leads us out of darkness.

We'll finally show the group that is not just about seeing different styles of works, but understanding how art connects cultures. I've just finished organizing our western paintings for tomorrow's tour. Great traditional mexican silver brought in big crowds last week, and earlier today, people enjoyed the chinese writing art show. I'm confident it'll be another success. definitely.

D. Critical.
