Why We Count the Rubbish in Our School
Every autumn, the students of our school count the rubbish in the school bins. It takes two lessons, one afternoon and a great many plastic bags. At first some students thought it was silly: “We can see the rubbish. Why do we need to count it?” Two hours later the answer was clear. The bin near the canteen held eighty-three plastic bottles, and the bin in the reading room held eleven. The students of Class Seven had counted carefully, and their numbers were almost the same as the numbers of Class Nine. When the results were put up on the wall in the school hall, nobody called the survey silly any more.
Then the head teacher did something the students had not expected. Neither the head teacher nor the students had ever counted how many bottles we used, and yet the school bought 200 reusable bottles and 400 cloth bags. The bins in the canteen were moved to the school gate, so students just had to drop their rubbish before they went in. The number of bottles in the bins fell by half in one week.
The survey did not end there. Now each class has its own rubbish corner, and a group of students checks it every Friday. “Counting rubbish is not the point,” one girl said. “It makes you look at what you throw away.” Some people say that small actions cannot change a big problem. That may be true of big problems. A school is small, and a school can change.
29.Why did some students think the survey was silly at first?
A.Because they had to count rubbish for a whole afternoon.
B.Because the bins were too dirty to open.
C.Because the survey took away two lessons.
D.Because they could already see how much rubbish there was.
30.What happened after the results were put up on the wall?
A.The school bought reusable bottles and cloth bags and moved the bins.
B.The students decided to clean the bins every Friday.
C.The school closed the canteen for a week.
D.Class Nine won the game.
31.What does the girl in the last paragraph mean?
A.Rubbish should be hidden from the students.
B.Counting rubbish is the real aim of the survey.
C.The point of counting is to notice what we throw away.
D.Students should count the bins instead of the rubbish.
32.What is the writer’s attitude towards the survey?
A.It is only useful for primary school students.
B.It can change a small place, even if it cannot change the world.
C.It is a waste of time and money.
D.It should be done by teachers instead of students.
C
Growing up, I always took notes in class by hand. I would copy everything from the blackboard or slide (幻灯片) while listening to the teacher. When I entered college, I noticed that many students were using laptops to take notes. Sometimes, I wondered: Should I change my note-taking habits? Could I get better grades if I typed my notes instead of writing them by hand?
A study at Princeton University looked at different note-taking skills. The researchers asked pairs of students to take notes during an online course. In each pair, one student used a computer, and the other used pen and paper. The researchers found that the students performed similarly on fact-based questions. However, some questions required that the students answer what they had learned in the lesson. On these questions, the “typing or copying everything” students scored much lower. Interestingly, this study also found that students who didn’t copy the notes word for word scored higher. And this finding made me improve my note-taking habits.
“With laptops or your pen and paper, you can write a lot of things down,” said Michi Matsukura, one of my professors. “The problem is, are you trying to understand what you’re writing?”
Now, “conceptual (概念化的) note-taking”—focus on big ideas, key terms, and interesting facts— simply makes more sense to us. We’ve found it more helpful in our studies than copying everything. It wasn’t easy to make this change, though. There was a fear of missing something when I first stopped writing down everything on the slide.
It takes time and effort to discover and master the art of note taking. You can write your notes by hand or type them. You can copy word for word or try “conceptual note taking”. In the end, they are your notes. Just do what works best for you.
33.Which is TRUE about typing or copying the notes word for word?
A.It’s helpful to answer some fact-based questions.
B.People always use some key terms when copying.
C.Big ideas are often used when people copy the notes.
D.It’s easy to answer what we have learned in the lesson.
34.What made the writer change his note-taking habits?
A.His professor’s advice. B.The finding of a study.
C.An online course. D.His classmate’s help.
35.What is the writer’s opinion in the last paragraph?
A.Conceptual note taking is more important.
B.Typing on laptops can help get better grades.
C.He especially supports copying everything down.
D.It’s better to choose a way that works best for you.
36.What is the right structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
