Years ago my family and I stayed in a place famous for its tropical beauty. We walked our dog twice a day, watered the dozens of potted plants, and wandered around, enjoying the break from our usual routines.
One morning, as we packed up for a day at the beach, a voice told me to do a final sweep through the house before leaving. Thankfully, I listened to it. In my grandson’s room I saw a thin curl of smoke rising from his bed. An old lamp was bent over the mattress, and the hot bulb and metal shade were burning a hole in it. I felt sick. Had we left without seeing the lamp, the house could have burned down. It was an old wooden structure with no watering system; it probably didn’t even have a smoke alarm.
We went on with our planned day at the beach. Every so often the close call would crowd into my mind, and my heart would race. I imagined having to contact the owners to tell them their home, filled with family photos, art, and books, had been destroyed. “Thank God it didn’t happen.” I whispered to myself. We finished our stay, leaving a few hours before the owners returned. When I spoke to them on the phone, I offered to buy them a new mattress and recommended they replace the lamp.
A few weeks later I received a note from the wife, telling me her husband had died from an infection he’d gotten while hiking on their trip. At first they’d thought it was no big deal, but six days after their return home, he was dead! It occurred to me then that if we had burned their house down, they would have come home early — perhaps before that hike. They would have been angry and sad, and I would have been filled with guilt. All my life I would have thought — Oh my God, I ruined their lives!
We never know, when misfortune happens, what other far worse disaster we might have avoided.
7. What does the underlined phrase “close call” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. The owners might have returned home earlier.
B. The owners would have been pleasantly surprised.
C. The house would have been damaged by flooding.

10. What conclusion does the author reach at the end of the story?

On a rainy afternoon in a small town, a young deliveryman named Alex was making his rounds. Alex had just started this job a few weeks ago and was still learning the ropes. Today, his task was to deliver a precious package to an old mansion on the outskirts of the town.
As he drove along the slippery roads, the rain became heavier, making visibility almost zero. His GPS started malfunctioning, and he realized he had taken a wrong turn. By the time he corrected his route, he was running late.
When Alex finally reached the mansion, he rushed to the front door, package in hand. An elderly man, Mr. Thompson, opened the door. Alex apologized profusely for the delay, but Mr. Thompson just smiled kindly and invited him in to dry off for a while.
While waiting for the rain to case up, Alex noticed some old photographs on the wall. Mr. Thompson saw his interest and started sharing stories about his family. He talked about his son who lived far away and how he was eagerly waiting for the package, which contained important family heirlooms.
Suddenly, Alex realized that there was a problem. In his hurry, he had mixed up the labels on two packages. The one he had delivered to Mr. Thompson was not the right one. Panic filled his heart, but he quickly explained the situation to Mr. Thompson.
Instead of getting angry, Mr. Thompson remained calm. He told Alex that mistakes happen and that they should figure out a solution together. They called the delivery company, and Alex offered to drive back immediately to exchange the packages, even though the rain was still pouring.
With the help of the company’s new GPS guidance, Alex managed to find the correct address. He swapped the packages and rushed back to the mansion. When he finally handed over the right package to Mr. Thompson, the old man’s eyes filled with joy.
Mr. Thompson was so grateful that he wrote a letter of praise to Alex’s company. Because of his honesty and determination to fix the mistake, Alex not only kept his job but also received a bonus. This experience taught Alex that honesty and responsibility are the keys to success, no matter how difficult the situation may seem.

Alice Tolbert, a crossing guard who helped generations of students safely cross the street at Ruth Acty Elementary for nearly two decades, retired last month.
Alice Tolbert moved to Berkeley as a senior in high school from Alabama. She credited a dream for landing her the crossing guard position. ____15____ To her surprise, a job opening was posted at the city hall, and she was hired.
Miss Alice guarded the crossroads, five days a week, rain or shine. ____16____ On a typical morning, Miss Alice would arrive at Ruth Acty. “How you doing, baby?” was her most common question for kids crossing the street. ____18____ “She’ll always high-five me in the morning when I walk to school, and always say hello, and she always has a smile on her face,” said third grader Penelope. “She is a great favorite of the school’s students,” said a teacher from Ruth Acty.
On her last day on duty, more than four dozen parents and kids, including middle and high schoolers she hadn’t helped cross for years, brought balloons and hand-printed signs to cheer her on. “____19____” read one sign. “Honk (鸣笛) if you love Miss Alice,” read another, and many drivers did.

上文“Alice Tolbert moved to Berkeley as a senior in high school from Alabama. She credited a dream for landing her the crossing guard position.(Alice Tolbert高中时从阿拉巴马州搬到伯克利。她将获得交通协管员这一职位归功于一个梦)”说明Alice Tolbert获得交通协管员职位和梦有关。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明梦的具体内容。所以G项“她听从内心的声音去申请交通协管员的工作。”符合语境。该选项中的“ask for a crossing guard job”与上文中的“landing her the crossing guard position”相呼应。
上文“Miss Alice guarded the crossroads, five days a week, rain or shine.(爱丽丝小姐每周五天,风雨无阻地守卫着十字路口)”说明爱丽丝小姐工作认真。
上文“On a typical morning, Miss Alice would arrive at Ruth Acty. “How you doing, baby?” was her most common question for kids crossing the street. If they asked her the same in return, she’d reply, “I’m good!”(在一个典型的早晨,爱丽丝小姐会来到Ruth Acty。“你好吗,宝贝?”是她对过马路的孩子最常问的问题。如果他们也这样问她,她会回答:“我很好!”)”说明爱丽丝小姐和孩子们的交流很温馨。空处顺接前文,说明这些交流的性质。所以D项“她与学生的简短交流很有意义”符合语境,该项中的“brief exchanges”与前文的对话内容相呼应。
【18题详解】
下文““She’ll always high-five me in the morning when I walk to school, and always say hello, and she always has a smile on her face,” said third grader Penelope. “She is a great favorite of the school’s students,” said a teacher from Ruth Acty.(三年级学生佩内洛普说:“早上我步行去学校时,她总是和我击掌,总是打招呼,脸上总是挂着微笑。”Ruth Acty的一位老师说:“她是学校学生最喜欢的人。”)”说明Ruth Acty社区的人都很喜欢爱丽丝小姐,都很珍视她的温暖。空处位于段首,总领这部分内容。所以F项“Ruth Acty社区的人都很珍视她的温暖。”符合语境。
【19题详解】
上文“On her last day on duty, more than four dozen parents and kids, including middle and high schoolers she hadn’t helped cross for years, brought balloons and hand-printed signs to cheer her on.(在她值班的最后一天,40多位家长和孩子,包括她多年来没有帮助过马路的中学生和高中生,带着气球和手写的标语来为她加油)”说明很多人来为爱丽丝小姐加油。

Last month, it was my friend Emily’s birthday, and she invited us to her house to celebrate. I’m really excited because Emily always gives me special birthday gifts, so I want to do something good in return. I decided that, instead of just buying her a gift, I’d bake (烤) her a cake. I’m not a master in the kitchen, but how hard could it be to bake a simple chocolate cake?
The day before the party, I went to the store to pick up everything I needed: flour (面粉), sugar, eggs, and, of course, chocolate. I even bought a nice toy to make the cake look beautiful. I was feeling pretty confident.
When I got home, I started mixing everything together. It was going smoothly and the kitchen was filled with the sweet smell of baking. But then, disaster struck. I was rushing to get the cake finished, and in a hurry, I took the wrong bag. Without even thinking, I put in what I thought was sugar, but it was actually salt!
The cake looked perfect when it came out-golden brown with a shiny top. The smell was so amazing that I couldn’t wait to show it at the party. I imagined everyone was surprised at my baking skills and how impressed Emily would be. But little did I know, my cake was about to become the most memorable birthday cake ever.
The next day, I arrived at Emily’s party with the cake. The moment came when we cut the cake. Emily, being the birthday girl, was the first to taste the cake. She carefully cut a piece, and with a big smile, she took the first bite (咬). But then... her expression changed. Her eyes widened for a second, she looked at me, clearly puzzled.
“Uh... are you sure this is a cake?” she asked, trying hard not to laugh.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I immediately took a bite myself, and my heart dropped. The moment the flavor hit my tongue, I knew something had gone horribly wrong. It was so salty! Not the rich, sweet chocolate cake I had imagined! I turned bright red, and the entire room went dead silent. Then, as if planned, everyone burst out laughing. Emily, trying to keep it together, finally managed to say, “Well, this is definitely a new flavor I wasn’t expecting! A salty chocolate cake... that’s an interesting choice.” I felt my face get even hotter. “I-uh-I think I used salt instead of sugar!” I stammered, hardly able to look anyone in the eye. “I’m so sorry, everyone. I totally messed up!”
But instead of making me feel worse, Emily just laughed harder “Honestly, it’s not the worst cake I’ve ever had,” she said, still giggling. “And hey, at least it’s something we’ll never forget!” At that point, everyone joined in, and the room was filled with laughter. We joked the cake as “legendary birthday cake” and it became the highlight of Emily’s birthday, which relieved my embarrassment to a large degree. I was soon involved in the cheerful atmosphere and we all had a pleasant time at Emily’s birthday party. It may have been a baking disaster, but it was surely the most unforgettable moment of the celebration!

A. The owners might have returned home earlier.
B. The owners would have been pleasantly surprised.
C. The house would have been damaged by flooding.
D. They would have enjoyed their trip without any incidents.
10. What conclusion does the author reach at the end of the story?
A. The necessity of always being prepared.
B. The unpredictable nature of life’s events.
C. The need to pay attention to potential dangers.
D. The importance of following safety guidelines.
