If you are finding it tough to land a job, try expanding your job-hunting plan to include the following strategies:
Set your target
While you should always keep your opinions open to compromise (妥协), you should also be sure to target exactly what you want in a job. A specific job hunt will be more efficient than a random one.
Schedule abundant interviews
Use every possible method to get interviews-answering ads, using search firms, contacting companies directly, surfing the Web, and networking. Even if a job is not perfect for you, every interview can make you learn from it.
Follow up
Even if someone does not hire you, write them a thank-you note for the interview. Then. some weeks later, send another brief letter to explain that you still have not found the perfect position and that you will be available to interview again if the original position you applied for-or any other position, for that matter-is open. Do this with every position you interview for, and you may just catch a break.
Make it your full-time job
You can’t find a job by looking infrequently. You have to make time for it. If you’re unemployed and looking for a job, devote as much time as you would to a full-time job. If you have a job while you’re looking, figure out an organized schedule to maximize your searching time.
Network vertically
In the research phase of your job hunt, talk to people who are on a level above you in your desired industry. They’ll have some insights that people at your own level won’t have, and will be in a good position to hire you or recommend you to be hired.
Keep your spirits up
Looking for a job is one of the toughest things you will ever have to do. Maintain your confidence, stay persistent, and think positively, and eventually you will get a job that suits you.

“Keep your eyes on the road ahead,” my driving instructor said. “You go in the direction you look.”I remembered the remark several years later, when my mom and I reached a crossroads in our writing careers. We’d been writing separately, not making much progress toward our goal of getting published.
One day, Mom suggested we write a romance novel together. She thought it would be fun and less tiring if we took turns, since there’d always be something to build from. The idea was appealing and we decided to give it a try. Working together made the process much easier and a lot more fun. We both looked forward to getting to the computer to see what twists(转折)and turns had taken place while we were gone. We both also wanted to make sure the work we left during our respective time was as interesting as we could make it.
We finished the first book and began sending it to publishers. Though we got some good comments, rejections piled up(堆积):Where’s the romance? Sorry, not for us. From experience, we knew the best way to keep from brooding over disappointment: Start a second book. Once finished, we bravely sent off our second effort—and did no better. Then the third…After yet another rejection, Mom grew disheartened, wondering if we should give up.
Suddenly my driving instructor’s words came back to me. I said, “Maybe we ought to look where we’re going.” I continued, “It’s like driving. We’ve taken our eyes off the reason we started writing together. We want to be published, sure, but the main reason was to have fun doing what we both enjoy.”
“You’re right.” Mom let out a long breath. “I haven’t been having fun for quite a while. Maybe we should write something we truly love. You know, we only started writing romances because they’re popular. There’s no real heart in our stories. ”
The SkyHorse, our young adult novel, was published last year.
41. How did the author feel about writing with her mother?

C. Worrying deeply about. D. Complaining openly about.
43. What role did the driving instructor’s words play in the author and her mother’s writing career?
A. They gave them inspiration of their next book.
B. They stopped them from writing a book together.
C. They reminded them of their original intention of writing.
D. They encouraged them not to give up writing despite criticism.
44. What led to the author and her mother successfully publishing The SkyHorse?
A. Writing for young adults. B. Choosing a popular theme.
C. Improving their editing process. D. Focusing on their genuine interests.
45. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A journey to romance B. Benefits of potential cowriting

What makes babies laugh? It sounds like one of the most fun questions a researcher could investigate, but there’s a serious scientific reason why Caspar Addyman wants to find out.
He’s not the first to ask this question. The great psychologist (心理学家) of human development, Jean Piaget, thought that babies’ laughter could be used to see into their minds. Studying when babies laugh might therefore be a great way of gaining insight into how they understand the world, he reasoned. But although he suggested this in the 1940s, this idea remains to be properly tested. Despite the fact that some very famous investigators have studied the topic, it hasn't been given enough attention by modern psychology.
Addyman, of Birkbeck, University of London, is out to change that. He believes we can use laughter to get how babies understand the world exactly. He’s completed the world's largest and most comprehensive survey of what makes babies laugh, presenting his initial results at the International Conference on Infant Studies, Berlin, last year. Via his website he surveyed more than 1,000 parents from around the world, asking them questions about when, where and why their babies laugh.
The results are heart-warming. A baby’s first smile comes at about six weeks, their first laugh at about three and a half months. Peekaboo (躲猫猫) is a guaranteed favourite for making babies laugh, but tickling (挠痒痒) is the single most reported reason why babies laugh.
Importantly, from the very first chuckle (低声轻笑), the survey responses show that babies are laughing with other people, and at what they do. The mere physical sensation of something being ticklish isn’t enough. Nor is it enough to see something disappear or appear suddenly. It’s only funny when an adult makes these things happen for the baby. This shows that way before babies walk, or talk, they — and their laughter — are social. If you tickle a baby they apparently laugh because you are tickling them, not just because they are tickled.
What's more, babies don’t tend to laugh at people falling over. They are far more likely to laugh when they fall over, rather than someone else, or when other people are happy, rather than when they are sad or unpleasantly surprised. Although parents report that boy babies laugh slightly more than girl babies, both genders (性别) find mummy and daddy equally funny.
In spite of the scientific potential, baby laughter is “strangely ignored”, according to Addyman. Part of the reason is the difficulty of making babies laugh reliably in the lab, although he plans to deal with this in the next stage of the project. But partly the topic has been ignored, he says, because it isn’t viewed as a subject for “proper” science to look into. This is a prejudice Addyman hopes to overturn — for him, the study of laughter is certainly no joke.
46. The psychologist Jean Piaget held the belief that ________.
A. even a good joke could not be got across to babies
B. his theory about laughter would be proved in the end
C. studying babies' laughter helped to know how they understand the world
D. babies' laughter could be used to find out whether their brains functioned well
47. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. the present situation of Birkbeck B. the study conducted by Jean Piaget
C. thinking little of modern psychology D. ignoring the research into babies' laughter
48. When do babies first laugh out loud according to the survey?
A. At about three and a half months old.
B. At about six weeks old.
C. At one year old.
D. At two months old.
49. The result of the survey undertaken by Addyman show that ________.
A. babies are likely to laugh at people falling over
B. babies enjoy laughing when they see others feel sad
C. baby girls always laugh more than baby boys
D. babies and their laughter are social in a way
50. From the last paragraph, it can be concluded that for Addyman, ________.
A. babies’ laughter is well worth studying
B. nobody should play jokes on babies
C. babies’ laughter is not a real science subject
D. scientists can get reliable information only in the lab
D
At his school in ancient Athens, Aristotle encouraged everyone to walk through the gardens while discussing ideas, rather than sitting quietly for lectures. Teachers and students would explore questions, challenge each other’s thinking, and build on each other’s insights. This tradition of walking and wondering together became so successful that it continued for centuries, influencing how knowledge was shared throughout the ancient world.
Yet today we rarely create space for such collective curiosity. While we have unlimited access to information, we’re often too busy, too distracted, or too preoccupied with immediate results to engage in shared exploration. Plus, our education and workplaces usually prioritize individual achievement over group discovery.
This is unfortunate, as exploring together can lead to remarkable outcomes. When you share your questions with others, you can create new possibilities that none of you could have imagined alone.
History often paints a romantic picture of the lone genius — the solitary (独自工作的,孤身的) inventor in their workshop, the lone scientist in their lab, the writer alone in their small room… These stories are engaging but incomplete: individual brilliance is rarely enough for breakthrough innovation.
The Wright brothers didn’t invent flight only by themselves; they extensively corresponded with fellow aviation (航空) enthusiasts. The Human Genome Project, which successfully mapped our genetic code (遗传密码), wasn’t the work of a single brilliant mind, but rather a massive team effort where thousands of scientists shared their questions, challenges, and discoveries.
Collective curiosity is the practice of exploring questions and discovering answers together, where we build on each other’s insights and create an environment that encourages open inquiry and shared learning.
Many resist collective curiosity for understandable reasons. In competitive workplaces, admitting uncertainty can feel risky. Time pressures push us toward quick solutions. You might worry that asking questions might make you seem indecisive. Yet, those who welcome a shared, generative state of unknowing often find it leads to better outcomes.
When we practice collective curiosity, every conversation becomes a chance to learn something new. So let me ask: which questions will you and your team explore today, together?
51. What did Aristotle’s teaching method value?
A. Friendly competition. B. Lecture-based learning.
C. Strict academic discipline. D. Active thought exchange.
52. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Disadvantages of modern education. B. Concerns about immediate results.
C. Roots of reduced collective curiosity. D. Barriers to individual achievements.
53. What is the author’s attitude to the stories of lone geniuses?
A. Tolerant. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Favorable.
54. Why does the author mention the Wright brothers and the Human Genome Project?
A. To emphasize the challenges faced by inventors and scientists.
B. To provide examples of major scientific and technological achievements.
C. To explain how competitions encourage faster problem solving.
D. To illustrate the importance of teamwork and shared curiosity.
55. What restricts shared exploration in workplaces?
A. Lack of common goals. B. Fear of appearing incapable.
C. The indecision of team leaders. D. The desire to ease pressure quickly.

I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids and threw jump shots over their heads. The boys always tried to stop her, but never could.
I began to notice her at other times, on that same blacktop (柏油路), playing alone — sometimes until dark. One day, I asked her why she practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation, she said: “The only way I can go to college is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. If I’m good enough, I can get a scholarship.”
She was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. But one time in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, her head cradled in her arms. Quietly, I asked what was wrong. “I am just too short,” came a soft reply. The coach told her that, at 5’5” (about 165 cm), she would probably never get to play for a top-ranked team — much less offered a scholarship.
She was heartbroken. I asked her to talk to her dad about it. Her father told her that those coaches were wrong — they just did not understand the power of a dream. Nothing could stop her, except one thing: her own attitude. He told her, “If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.”
The next year, when she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was noticed by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship to a women’s basketball team. She finally got what she had dreamed of and worked toward for all those years. And that little girl ended up having more playing time than any other woman in the history of the university.
During her junior year of college, her father – her hero, died. The following years were hard for her. The grief she felt over the loss of her father was always there. She struggled daily with fear, doubt, and frustration. However, every time she wanted to quit, she remembered her father’s last words: “Rachel, keep dreaming. Don’t let your dream die. If the dream is big enough, you can do anything!”
She completed her degree. It took her six years, but she didn’t give up. She can still be found sometimes as the sun is setting, bouncing a basketball. And often I hear her tell others, “If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.”

根据文章第二段“Working together made the process much easier and a lot more fun. We both looked forward to getting to the computer to see what twists(转折)and turns had taken place while we were gone.(合作让写作过程轻松了许多,也有趣得多。我们都盼着坐到电脑前,看看自己不在时故事发生了什么曲折变化。)”可知,作者认为与母亲合作写作的过程轻松且有趣,并期待继续创作。故选A。
【42题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词所在语境“From experience, we knew the best way to keep from brooding over disappointment: Start a second book.(根据经验,我们知道避免因失望而……的最好办法是:开始写下一本书。)”可推测,面对拒绝时人们容易陷入过度担忧或沮丧。因此,“brooding over”意为“沉思、担忧”。选项C“Worrying deeply about(深深担忧)”与此相符。故选C。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Suddenly my driving instructor’s words came back to me. I said, “Maybe we ought to look where we’re going.” I continued, “It’s like driving. We’ve taken our eyes off the reason we started writing together. We want to be published, sure, but the main reason was to have fun doing what we both enjoy.”(突然,教练的话在我耳边响起。我说:“也许我们该看看自己要驶向哪里。”我接着说:“这就像开车。我们忘了一起写作的初衷。我们当然想出版,但主要原因是想在共同热爱的事情中找到乐趣。”)”可知,驾驶教练的话让作者和母亲意识到她们偏离了写作的初衷——享受共同创作的乐趣,而非单纯追求出版。这一反思促使她们调整方向,最终写出真正热爱的作品。故选C。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段““You’re right.” Mom let out a long breath. “I haven’t been having fun for quite a while. Maybe we should write something we truly love. You know, we only started writing romances because they’re popular. There’s no real heart in our stories. ”(“你说得对。”妈妈长舒一口气,“我已经很久没感受到乐趣了。也许我们该写真正热爱的东西。你知道吗,我们当初写爱情小说只是因为它们流行,但我们的故事里没有真正的灵魂。”)”以及最后一段“The SkyHorse, our young adult novel, was published last year.(去年,我们的青少年小说《天马》出版了。)”
C“Going where you look(看向哪里,驶向哪里)”直接引用教练的话,呼应全文“目标与方向”的主题,隐喻坚持初衷的重要性,最贴切。故选C。

第一节:阅读表达(满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

【答案】One possible version:
Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do
Life is full of uncertainties, but one thing is for sure—we all run into times when we find it so hard to carry on. In my opinion, those times are not meant to stop us, but to shape who we are.
Personally, without the great efforts it took me to get admitted to my dream high school, I wouldn't be able to meet so many great teachers and classmates.
All tough times will eventually come to an end. Until then, all you need to do is keep calm and carry on.
