A job is more than just a job, especially to the older generation. “It’s not the money that matters, but the sense of selfworth,” 56yearold Cheng Wonlan said. So, every day Ms Cheng carries a bag of parcels, letters and documents of all shapes and sizes and does her rounds in North Point. She’s a courier
Five years ago, Ms Cheng was a nurse at a private clinic. She had worked there for almost 30 years but was made jobless when the doctor migrated. It was extremely difficult for her to find another job. “People do not trust my ability when they learn how old I am,” she said. After two years of searching, the mother of two eventually found another nursing job. But then after two years, she quit. Why?
“My colleagues were young and they didn’t understand me because of my age. They often asked me, ‘You are so old; what are you working for?’ I was very unhappy.” she said. So while the rest of her family left for work, she was left to lonely boredom at home. The urge to work drove her to suffering. Then, one of Ms Cheng’s neighbours told her about Employee’s Retraining Board (ERB) offering retraining courses for older people on specific occupations, such as convenience store assistants, junior clerks and so on.
“I was interested in courier work. I didn’t think my age was a barrier because I was fit and healthy. So I thought why not give it a try.” she said. Upon graduation from the ERB, Ms Cheng was offered a job by the Speeding Shuttle Courier Service Company Limited. But then Ms Cheng was faced with a conflict: she was caught between honour and employment. It took Ms Cheng 24 hours to make up her mind and eventually came to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong or embarrassing about doing the job. So she took heart and went off to work as a courier.
Ms Cheng’s employer is delighted with her, “Ms Cheng has been working with us for two months and has shown a good responsible attitude to work.” Anthony Chong, who runs the company, said. Currently, Mr. Chong has 60 couriers working for his company: five of them are over fifty, four of whom have been through the ERB plan. Mr. Chong said he hired older people because they were able and reliable. “Age is not an important factor but attitude is. Many old people are more capable than the youngsters. They will not run from difficulties but the young ones will.” he said. “It is not easy to recruit young people since they shy away from hardship and challenges.”
41. Why was it difficult for Ms Cheng to find another nursing job?
A. Nursing clinics were hard to find.
B. People thought that old people couldn’t be trusted.
C. People thought she was too old to take on a new job.
D. People didn’t think she had enough working experience.
42. Ms Cheng left her second nursing job because _______.
A. the other staff made her feel uncomfortable

A. finding jobs for older people
B. teaching new skills to older people
C. training older people to be couriers
D. providing older people with something to do in their spare time
44. According to Anthony Chong, young people _______.
A. are able and reliable
B. are more likely to give up than the older ones
C. are fitter and stronger than the older ones
D. are less experienced than the older ones
45. From the text, we can learn Ms Cheng is _______.

Growing up in a small village Begur Divakar recalls, “Our village lost its existence with a rapid expansion of Bangalore city. Because of this, families like ours, who depended on farming, lost their source of income. My father was forced to buy land around 100 km away from the city to continue farming. He never let us help on the land as he wanted us to focus on our studies and leave his farming roots behind.”
Divakar grew up to become a project scientist at the India Space Research Organization. He remained completely disconnected from his farming roots until 2009 when his father suffered a serious illness that left him unable to move. That was when Divakar chose to return to his father and started his farming life.
Initially, Divakar grew crops like local farmers but had much smaller earnings compared to his previous work despite hard work. In order to stand out in the farming crowd, Divakar intended to grow a different crop. After thorough research, he turned to dates (海枣) — a crop grown in the hot desert of countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Divakar bought 150 costly young trees and put in considerable effort to enhance the conditions for their growth. Yet, he did not get any return in the first several years. “My mother reminded me why my father did not want me to pursue a farming career. I felt like I was at a crossroads in life but I trusted my heart,” he says. It was only after four and a half years that Divakar saw the first flowering; his joy was beyond description. Today, he can get a generous harvest, and planting dates has earned him significant recognition.
Referring to today’s generation, Divakar says, “People these days think it exciting to quit current jobs and take up farming. Many come to me and inquire about investment and profit. Farming comes with its own set of challenges and without any guaranteed success regardless of the best practices one adopts. Farming is not a real-estate business that you will get double the investment in a brief period. They need to measure what they truly value. For me, inner peace is more important than money.”
46. How did a rapid expansion of Bangalore city affect Divakar’s family?
A. They started a new business. B. They suffered financial losses.
C. They moved to a bigger village. D. They became wealthy in the city.
47. What drove Divakar to reconnect with his farming roots?
A. A desire for a simpler life. B. Encouragement from his family.
C. His father’s poor health condition. D. The envy of other farmers’ success.
48. Which of the following shows Divakar’s initial farming experience?
A. Enjoyable. B. Rewarding. C. Unchallenging. D. Struggling.
49. What does Divakar convey to today’s generation wanting to pursue a farming career?
A. Think twice before you act. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. What goes around comes around. D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
50. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Quick Profit from Farming B. The state of producing a profit of Date Farming
C. The Challenges of Modern Farming D. A Journey Back to the Farming Roots
D
Recently, a friend celebrating a milestone birthday announced that her new goal was to stop feeling so anxious about everything, and instead to have fun. She asked for my advice on how to do that. I told her about something that the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard identified back in the 19th century as a challenge each person must face to keep from falling into despair. He regarded this as “the most important thing” in life. Kierkegaard was referring to anxiety itself. He believed that understanding and using one’s anxiety was the great opportunity and adventure of life.
Modern research supports this idea. In 2014, scholars writing in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology published a study on how a person’s anxiety while performing a task affected “flow,” the intensely rewarding state of focus originally identified in the 1970s by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. The researchers found that flow states were highest when subjects felt some anxiety but were not overpowered by it. Perhaps you can relate to feeling fully alive when you’re working within your abilities but are just on the edge of them.
Instead of treating anxiety as something purely negative, we can see it as a useful signal. It is protective insofar as it alerts you to potential threats. If you remove all anxiety when you’re driving, for example, you may not be alert enough to the dangers of traffic. Even people who experience what is generally regarded as a severe level have noted that they gain some emotional benefits from their anxiety. As Scott Stossel, author of My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind, notes, anxiety can raise one’s awareness of others, promote understanding, and bring one greater self-knowledge.
While severe, dysregulated anxiety should rightly be treated as a medical concern, ordinary anxiety need not be seen as harmful. If understood and managed properly, it can even be a friend. The first step is to accept anxiety as a normal occurrence, not try to mold it back. Experiments have found that people who tried to control their anxious behaviors felt even more anxious, compared with those who accepted these feelings.
The next step is to reframe anxiety, not as dread but as evidence of an exciting opportunity. The Harvard psychiatrist Kevin Majeres has defined anxiety as “adrenaline with a negative frame.” The right goal is not to get rid of adrenaline but to change how we interpret it. This can be as simple as saying, when something is stressing you out, “This is exciting.”
51. What does “this idea” (paragraph 2) refer to?
A. Anxiety leads people to despair. B. Anxiety can play a positive role.
C. Anxiety is what adults must live with. D. Adventure begins with feelings of anxiety.
52. What can be inferred about the public attitude toward anxiety from the passage?
A. Many people hold a mistaken view of anxiety.
B. Most people view anxiety simply as a part of life.
C. Public understanding of anxiety has recently improved.
D. People’s understanding of anxiety differs across cultures.
53. Which of the following is a suggested way to deal with anxiety?
A. Take medication whenever you begin to feel anxious.
B. Avoid activities that might cause nervousness or stress.
C. Try to block anxious thoughts and control every reaction.
D. Accept the feeling and see it as a sign of new possibilities.
54. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Turning Anxiety into Strength B. The Hidden Dangers of Anxiety
C. Living Without Feeling Anxious D. Why Anxiety Is a Modern Disease
55. How is the passage structured?
A. By presenting a common problem, analyzing its causes, and offering solutions.
B. By introducing a philosophical view, supporting it with research, and providing practical advice.
C. By comparing different types of anxiety and explaining their respective impacts.
D. By telling a personal story, drawing a conclusion, and verifying it with experiments.
When we were growing up in our grandparents’ home, Jack, my grandfather, was always in his room sitting in the chair and listening to the radio. The voices speaking from the metal box day and night, taught us that there was a larger world outside. He would roll the black dial (刻度盘) back and forth until the signal was clear. Then he would listen.
Now he is old and falls ill. When I went to visit him, he said to me, “I dislike the Internet. The problem is that we’re losing primary contact with each other. No more shaking hands. Everyone is so busy. We want too much and in the process of getting it we miss so much.” He stopped for a while. “It makes me feel lonely and sad.” Then he looked at me, “I just want to hear your voices.”
I think of all the voices on the radio he has spent a lifetime listening to. I asked, “How did you become interested in the radio?” “I don’t know,” he said. “It was another way to reach people. I was always interested in searching for a better signal, a clearer, more powerful signal that could communicate with someone somewhere.”
“And I’ll tell you another funny thing: you can electronically eliminate all kinds of noise from the signal, but you can’t remove natural noise caused by thunder and lightning, rainstorms, or snowstorms.”
He closed his eyes and smiled. “I was just thinking that in spite of all our technologies, maybe we haven’t progressed that far as human beings. We shouldn’t forget we still have the same basic needs.”
56. What did Jack use to do in his room? (No more than 15 words)
57. Why did Jack roll the black dial back and forth? (No more than 8 words)
58. How is Jack feeling now? (No more than 10 words)
59. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 4 mean? (4 words)
60. What should you do to solve the problem of losing direct contact with others?(No more than 20 words)
(1)你遭遇过的一次挫折;
(2)你克服困难的过程及结果;

根据文章第二段“He remained completely disconnected from his farming roots until 2009 when his father suffered a serious illness that left him unable to move. That was when Divakar chose to return to his father and started his farming life.

根据第一段中“He believed that understanding and using one’s anxiety was the great opportunity and adventure of life.(他认为,理解并利用自己的焦虑,是人生中一次绝佳的机会与冒险。)”以及第二段中“Modern research supports this idea. In 2014, scholars writing in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology published a study on how a person’s anxiety while performing a task affected “flow,” the intensely rewarding state of focus originally identified in the 1970s by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.(现代研究也支持这一观点。
根据第三段中“Instead of treating anxiety as something purely negative, we can see it as a useful signal.(我们不应将焦虑视为纯粹的负面情绪,而应将其视为一种有用的信号。)”以及第四段中“While severe, dysregulated anxiety should rightly be treated as a medical concern, ordinary anxiety need not be seen as harmful.(虽然严重且失控的焦虑确实应被视为医学问题,但普通的焦虑则不必被视为有害。)” 故选A。
根据第四段中“The first step is to accept anxiety as a normal occurrence, not try to mold it back.(第一步是接受焦虑是一种正常现象,而不是试图将其压抑回去。)”和第五段中“The next step is to reframe anxiety, not as dread but as evidence of an exciting opportunity.(下一步是重新定义焦虑,不是将其视为恐惧,而是将其视为激动人心的机会的证据。)”
通读全文,并结合第一段中“He believed that understanding and using one’s anxiety was the great opportunity and adventure of life.(他认为,理解并利用自己的焦虑,是人生中一次绝佳的机会与冒险。)”和第三段中“Instead of treating anxiety as something purely negative, we can see it as a useful signal.(我们不应将焦虑视为纯粹的负面情绪,而应将其视为一种有用的信号。)” 故选A。
根据第一段“Kierkegaard was referring to anxiety itself. He believed that understanding and using one’s anxiety was the great opportunity and adventure of life.(Kierkegaard所指的就是焦虑本身。他认为,理解并利用自己的焦虑,是人生中一次绝佳的机会与冒险。)”可知,第一段提出了一种哲学观点,根据第二段“Modern research supports this idea. In 2014, scholars writing in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology published a study on how a person’s anxiety while performing a task affected “flow,” the intensely rewarding state of focus originally identified in the 1970s by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.(现代研究也支持这一观点。2014年,发表在《实验社会心理学杂志》上的学者们进行了一项研究,探讨了人在执行任务时的焦虑感如何影响“心流”状态——这是一种由Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi在20世纪70年代首次提出的、高度专注且极具回报的心理状态。)”可知,第二段用研究来支持这种观点,根据倒数第二段“The first step is to accept anxiety as a normal occurrence, not try to mold it back.(第一步是接受焦虑是一种正常现象,而不是试图将其压抑回去。)”和最后一段“The next step is to reframe anxiety, not as dread but as evidence of an exciting opportunity.(下一步是重新定义焦虑,不是将其视为恐惧,而是将其视为激动人心的机会的证据。)”
56. He used to sit in the chair, listening to his radio.
57. To find a clear signal.
58. He is feeling lonely and sad.
59. Remove.
60. We should reduce the time we spend on the Internet and find more time to communicate with others.
根据文章第一段“Jack, my grandfather, was always in his room sitting in the chair and listening to the radio (我的祖父Jack总是在他的房间里坐在椅子上听收音机)”可知,作者的祖父Jack总是在他的房间里坐在椅子上,听收音机。 He used to sit in the chair, listening to his radio.
根据文章第一段“He would roll the black dial back and forth until the signal was clear. (他来回地拨弄着黑色的刻度盘,直到信号清晰为止)”可知,Jack这样做的目的是为了找到清晰的信号。故答案为To find a clear signal.
根据文章第二段“I dislike the Internet. (我不喜欢互联网)”以及“It makes me feel lonely and sad. (这让我感到孤独和悲伤)”可知,Jack不喜欢互联网,因为它使他感到孤独与悲伤。故答案为He is feeling lonely and sad.
根据文章第二段“but you can’t remove natural noise caused by thunder and lightning, rainstorms, or snowstorms (但你无法消除雷电、暴雨或暴风雪造成的天然的噪声)”可推知,上文“you can electronically eliminate all kinds of noise from the signal”意为“你可以通过电子手段消除信号中的各种噪声”。

Like any other English learners, I met a lot of difficulties in learning English. What troubled me most was that I found it difficult to understand what I read because most English words have more than one meaning.
To overcome such an obstacle in learning English, I tackled English vocabulary in two ways. First, I tried to understand and memorize the specific meaning of a word that appears in the context. Second, I enlarge my vocabulary by learning the dictionary by heart. As was expected, both the ways were proved to be effective and my English at last made progress.
From my point of view, the right way to face up difficulties is to be confident and brave. Confront difficulties with confident and you will find the difficulties are not so hard as you thought. Try to solve the difficulties with bravery and work hard, the difficulties will disappear and you will achieve success finally.
