In this digital era, paper art and pop-ups can add an element of tactility (触感) and human interaction to the written word. In this course, we’ll explore the many movements and dimensions you can create with pop-up structures — within books, cards, or on their own. We’ll learn to build and adjust basic paper engineering models, starting with simple one-sheet box pop-ups and working our way up to layered 180-degree self-standing constructions. Templates (模板) will be provided so everyone can understand and explore a wide range of complexities, and examples of how mechanisms are applied to published pop-up books will be shared throughout. At the end of the course, we’ll put all the pop-up models into a book. This course includes four total sessions: Session 1 Monday, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Intro to paper engineering: tools, templates, and 1-sheet pop-ups Session 2 Tuesday, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Building multi-piece pop-ups: complex structures Session 3 Wednesday, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Adjusting your pop-ups: adding variation Session 4 Thursday, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Creating a book: holding your work together Between sessions, students will be expected to pre-cut and score their pop-up templates so we can focus on construction and theory during class. Depending on experience and the template chosen, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Pricing options In addition to full-price tickets, a limited number of no-pay spots are available for this course. No-pay spots are distributed via a randomized drawing two weeks before each course begins. 21. What can students learn from the course? A. How to publish a book. B. Painting techniques on paper. C. How to build pop-up structures. D. The history of paper production. 22. What do we know about the course? A. It lasts for four days. B. It is free for everyone. C. It aims to sell books. D. It has an age limit. 23. Why are students expected to pre-cut and score pop-up templates between sessions? A. To practice their cutting skills. B. To make full use of in-class time. C. To prepare for a group discussion. D. To reduce the complexity of the project. B A school resource officer turned a failed summer field trip into an unforgettable memory for over 140 poor middle school students in Phoenix. When the funding for the end-of-summer movie trip fell through unexpectedly, program coordinator Katie Jenkins was at a loss. She turned to Officer Sean Reavie for help. Without hesitation, Reavie paid out of his own pocket to rent a whole movie theatre for 144 seventh and eighth graders from Greenway Middle School’s after-school programme. He also covered snacks including popcorn, candies and drinks for the private screening of Toy Story 5. For most kids, this was their very first time stepping into a movie theatre. The whole rental cost less than $2,000, yet the experience meant far more to these teenagers. Reavie said he would spare more money if needed, for he believed adults must never break promises made to children. Greenway is a Title I school, where most students come from financially disadvantaged families. Many have no private cars, and their parents hold several low-paying jobs to make ends meet. Half of these kids have never visited a water park, let alone travelled across the nearby highway. Reavie has kept helping kids with his own money year after year. Last summer, he spent over $3,000 taking students to a local water park. Inspired by children’s fondness for superheroes, he also founded a charity called Put On The Cape: A Foundation For Hope, aiming to bring warmth to more troubled youngsters. Before the movie rolled, Reavie shared a heartfelt wish with all the kids: grow up and pass on kindness to others as a return for what he had done. He expected nothing material in return, hoping this single act of generosity would plant seeds of kindness that would bloom (开花) for years to come. 24. Why did Jenkins ask Reavie for help? A. All cinema tickets were sold out. B. She lacked money for the planned trip. C. Some students refused to watch movies. D. The snacks prepared were far from enough. 25. Why did the author mention students’ family backgrounds in paragraph 3? A. To illustrate the backwardness of local education. B. To explain the expenses a family covered for the trip. C. To praise Reavie for what he had done for the school. D. To highlight the great value of the experience for kids. 26. Which of the following can best describe Reavie? A. Generous and warm-hearted. B. Patient and humorous. C. Modest and open-minded. D. Independent and reliable. 27. What was Reavie’s expectation for the kids? A. To hold on to their dreams. B. To treasure every moment in life. C. To spread kindness to more people. D. To seek personal material rewards. C “Plop plop, fizz fizz, oh what a relief it is.” You might have thought that only the pill that is advertised creates relief. But science suggests it is the words of the advertisement that actually produce it. Scientists call this mental assistance, Cognitive (认知的) Facilitation. Professional writers and speakers use it all the time, as is seen in Shelley’s poem: And the sunlight clasps the earth And the moonbeams kiss the sea: What is all this sweet work worth If thou (you) kiss not me? The structure of the first sentence acts as a prime (启动语) which is repeated in the second sentence, making its meaning better get across. Primes bring the flow of words into people’s minds. That gives you a straightforward means of writing or speaking that attracts people. Why do primes work? Readers and listeners are always asking, “What will this person say next?” The habit of guessing what’s next is universal. So when you place a prime early on — a word or phrase or sentence structure you plan to reuse — people take notice. They instantly and unknowingly place a bet, and if they’re right, they get a pay-off in faster language processing. Many experiments confirm this advantage. One small study by Uta Noppeney asked 25 people to read blocks of text, some of which had repeating language structures; some did not. People who read blocks with parallel patterns finished sentences faster roughly by 0.1 seconds. In another study, Sascha Topolinski at the University of Cologne had participants read short jokes and rate their funniness. Some were unknowingly primed with a key word from the punchline (笑点), while others were not. Topolinski’s readers rated jokes as funnier if the primes were presented more than a minute beforehand. In Topolinski’s mind, the primes enabled the participants to catch the joke and to master the punchline. Primes have their limits, of course. They can get boring. That’s why experts say: “Repeat and vary.” But in everyday talk and text, an old structure conveying a new idea prevents cognitive indigestion. Here’s some more new wine in an old bottle: “Plop plop, fizz fizz, oh how friendly a pattern is.” 28. What is used as a prime in Shelley’s poem? A. A complex term. B. A sentence pattern. C. A meaningful idea. D. A straightforward question. 29. What makes primes work according to Paragraph 3? A. People’s love of rewards. B. People’s concentration ability. C. People’s predictive mind. D. People’s habit of reusing things. 30. What did Topolinski believe primes helped participants do? A. Evaluate the humour. B. Write short jokes. C. Appreciate the punchline. D. Read the jokes faster. 31. What is a suitable title for the text? A. The Power of Primes B. The Art of Communication C. The Skills of Using Patterns D. The Science of Cognitive Facilitation D The appearance of predictive text in daily written communication has become a common feature of modern life. It either saves time by automatically filling in words or causes annoyance with irrelevant suggestions. The predictive-text function of large language models (LLMs) is often considered analogous to the human brain’s natural ability to forecast upcoming words during daily conversation. It therefore leads to a meaningful question: do human brains predict language in the exact same manner as artificial intelligence? A latest study published in Nature Neuroscience offers a clear answer. It proves that humans tend to consider broader linguistic structures, instead of merely focusing on the single immediate word. LLMs are strictly optimized to predict the next word in a fixed and equal pattern, while the human brain actively combines words into grammatical phrases and makes logical predictions within complete language chunks. The research team conducted systematic experiments on Mandarin speakers. They applied MEG (脑磁图) to record real-time brain activity and adopted Cloze tests to evaluate participants’ linguistic prediction performance. Further analysis on English brain data was also carried out to ensure the results could be applied across different languages. The team also used LLMs to quantify the predictability of words based on both their “entropy” and “surprisal”. High entropy indicates that the context doesn’t strongly limit following words, giving it less predictability. High surprisal indicates that the next word is not well expected based on the context. For example, the phrase “I saw a” carries higher entropy than “I sat on a”, since far more nouns can follow “saw”. By comparing brain reactions and LLM prediction results, researchers discovered that human brain activity varies with words’ structural positions. On the contrary, LLMs lack such structural awareness and only provide simple, fixed predictions. Overall, human beings share basic word prediction ability with AI, but our brain’s language judgement is deeply shaped by grammatical structures. This fundamental difference perfectly explains why human language processing is far more complex and flexible than current AI language models. 32. The underlined word “analogous” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______. A. similar B. unrelated C. contradictory D. opposite 33. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? A. LLMs are better at predicting rare words. B. Humans handle words and phrases faster. C. Humans focus more on language structures. D. LLMs are able to make logical predictions. 34. How does the author organize Paragraph 4? A. By describing an experiment and listing data. B. By defining two terms and giving examples. C. By citing a quote and providing explanations. D. By raising a question and offering answers. 35. What enables humans to outperform LLMs in word prediction? A. Grammar structure completeness. B. Data analysis capacity. C. Vocabulary recognition stability. D. Word processing speed. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Want to improve your life but feel overwhelmed by big changes? Actually, small and positive actions can make a significant difference. Lasting well-being is often built through consistent, manageable choices. You don’t need a huge transformation. ____36____ Here are some evidence-backed steps to get you started. ____37____ It can be about finding the delight in small, everyday moments, and deciding to approach your day-to-day life with good humour. ____38____ Researcher Tomisawa et al. (2025) found that laughing helps to improve optimism, reduce pessimism, and relieve stress. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you should go around laughing at anything and everything. Be aware of what’s happening around you and recognise the moments or interactions that hold the potential for amusement, and actively choose to lean into that. Stand up for what you believe in, even when it feels uncomfortable. Whether it’s defending someone, challenging unkind behaviour, or simply expressing your viewpoint, standing up for what matters to you strengthens your sense of identity and helps you to be an active bystander. ____39____ It’s being willing to act even when you feel scared. Each time you stand up for what you believe to be right, you’re confirming that your voice matters and deserves to be heard. Actively seek out connection. Our relationships are foundational to happiness. Having people around you to celebrate successes, laugh at mistakes, or share struggles nurtures deep connection and improves our individual well-being. Research has found that having such friendships predicted well-being and its components. ____40____ In short, small actions repeated consistently create meaningful change. These suggested steps all have the power to positively impact our everyday lives and help move us closer to the life that we want. A. Cherish daily progress. B. A few intentional minor shifts will do. C. Seek out fun and laughter in everyday things. D. So take time to develop supportive relationships. E. It seems scary, but courage isn’t the absence of fear. F. It builds up confidence and shapes how others see you. G. The benefits of this joyful approach are well-documented. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 I used to wake up and reach for my phone before I even opened my eyes. Its surface was worn smooth by years of use. “This is a winter whistle,” Grandpa explained. “If you are ever lost in the woods when it snows, blow this. The sound carries far across snow-covered ground. We will hear you and come find you.” Toby slipped it deep inside his winter-coat pocket, “I’m 12, and I no longer need to call for help!” To him, blowing the whistle would mean admitting he was not brave enough. That weekend, Toby went snow-trekking (雪地徒步) in the nearby forest with his best friend Jax. But an argument broke out between them over a silly game. Toby stormed off in anger, leaving Jax behind. He told himself he did not need anyone’s company. He would explore deeper into the woods alone to prove how tough he was. But the sun began to set. Grey clouds rolled in unexpectedly. A bitter winter wind sprang up. Snow began to fall in thick, swirling flakes. The gentle afternoon snow quickly turned into a snowstorm. Visibility dropped sharply. Toby could no longer tell which path led back home. He was lost. Cold bit through his gloves and his winter jacket. His cheeks and nose ached from the bitter wind. Panic rose inside his chest. He pulled his hands out of his gloves and fumbled (摸索) inside his coat pocket. His fingers closed around the hard shape of Grandpa’s whistle. It was right there. But shame washed over him. He had run away after the fight. If he blew the whistle, Grandpa and Jax would know he had acted stupidly. They would laugh at him for getting lost. Pride held him back. He stuffed the whistle back into his pocket and told himself he could find the way home by himself. He struggled forward through the heavy snow. The wind howled, blowing snow into his eyes. The temperature kept dropping. Still, the whistle stayed safely hidden in his pocket. As it was getting dark in the snowy woods, Toby felt close to passing out from the cold. He had to hide behind a large pine tree for shelter. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Inside his pocket, the bone whistle pressed against his hand. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The sound of the whistle drew anxious Grandpa and Jax over. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2026~2027学年高二10月测评 英语 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 注意事项: 1. What size silk pillowcase does the woman like? So I had to eat out for the remaining four days of my trip even though meals were included in my holiday package. M: I do apologize for that bad experience. We can offer you discounts on future trips or a free city tour as compensation. W: They won’t really make up for my bad experience. The only fair solution is to have the full sum I paid for the trip returned. 听下面一段对话,回答以下小题。【此处可播放相关音频,请去附件查看】 14. In which place did Joan find the wallet? A. A park. B. A supermarket. C. C. 【答案】24. B 25. D 26. A 27. The Science of Cognitive Facilitation 【答案】28. B 29. C 30. C 31. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了“启动语”的概念、作用、工作原理、实验验证以及其局限性,旨在说明启动语在语言交流中的重要性及其科学依据。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“The structure of the first sentence acts as a prime (启动语) which is repeated in the second sentence, making its meaning better get across. (第一句话的结构作为一个启动语,在第二句话中重复,使其意思更好地传达出去。)”可知,雪莱的诗中使用了句式作为启动语。故选B项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段第二、三句“Readers and listeners are always asking, “What will this person say next?” The habit of guessing what’s next is universal. So when you place a prime early on — a word or phrase or sentence structure you plan to reuse — people take notice. (读者和听众总是在问:“这个人接下来会说什么?”猜测接下来会发生什么的习惯是普遍存在的。所以当你提前放置一个启动语——一个你打算重复使用的单词、短语或句子结构——人们就会注意到)”可知,是人们的预测心理使启动语发挥作用。故选C项。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段最后一句“In Topolinski’s mind, the primes enabled the participants to catch the joke and to master the punchline. (在托波林斯基看来,启动语使参与者能够理解笑话并掌握笑点)”可知,托波林斯基认为启动语帮助参与者欣赏笑点。故选C项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段中的“Scientists call this mental assistance, Cognitive (认知的) Facilitation. Professional writers and speakers use it all the time, as is seen in Shelley’s poem: (科学家称之为心理辅助,即认知促进。专业作家和演讲者一直都在使用它,就像雪莱的诗中所看到的那样:)”以及第二段第一句“The structure of the first sentence acts as a prime (启动语) which is repeated in the second sentence, making its meaning better get across. (第一句话的结构作为一个启动语,在第二句话中重复,使其意思更好地传达出去)”可知,文章主要介绍了“启动语”的概念、作用、工作原理、实验验证以及其局限性,旨在说明启动语在语言交流中的重要性及其科学依据,所以A项“启动语的力量”适合作为文章标题。故选A项。 D The appearance of predictive text in daily written communication has become a common feature of modern life. 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. A 【解析】 【导语】文章主要讨论了人类大脑预判语言的方式是否和人工智能完全一致。 【32题详解】 词句猜测题。根据下文“It therefore leads to a meaningful question: do human brains predict language in the exact same manner as artificial intelligence?(由此引出一个极具研究价值的问题:人类大脑预判语言的方式,是否和人工智能完全一致?)”可知,下文质疑人类大脑预判语言的方式和人工智能是否完全一致,说明大语言模型(LLMs)的文本预测功能,常被认为和人脑在日常对话中预判下一个词语的先天能力相似。由此可知,analogous意为“相似的”。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“It proves that humans tend to consider broader linguistic structures, instead of merely focusing on the single immediate word. LLMs are strictly optimized to predict the next word in a fixed and equal pattern, while the human brain actively combines words into grammatical phrases and makes logical predictions within complete language chunks.(研究证实,人类会考量范围更广的语言结构,而非只盯着紧邻的单个词语。大语言模型的优化逻辑十分单一,只会以固定均等的模式预测下一个词;而人脑会主动将词语组合成语法短语,依托完整的语言片段做出符合逻辑的预判。)”可知,人类更注重语言结构。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“The team also used LLMs to quantify the predictability of words based on both their “entropy” and “surprisal”. High entropy indicates that the context doesn’t strongly limit following words, giving it less predictability. High surprisal indicates that the next word is not well expected based on the context. For example, the phrase “I saw a” carries higher entropy than “I sat on a”, since far more nouns can follow “saw”.(团队还利用大语言模型,通过“熵值”与“意外度”两个指标量化词语的可预测性。熵值越高,代表上下文对后续词语的约束越弱,词语可预测性越低;意外度越高,代表结合上下文,下一个词越出乎预料。举个例子,短语 “I saw a(我看见了一个)”的熵值高于“I sat on a(我坐在一个……上)”,因为跟在 saw 后的名词种类要多得多。)”可推知,作者是通过定义两个专业术语并举例说明来组织第四段的。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“On the contrary, LLMs lack such structural awareness and only provide simple, fixed predictions. Overall, human beings share basic word prediction ability with AI, but our brain’s language judgement is deeply shaped by grammatical structures. This fundamental difference perfectly explains why human language processing is far more complex and flexible than current AI language models.(恰恰相反,大型语言模型缺乏这种结构感知能力,只能输出简单、模式固化的预测结果。 Want to improve your life but feel overwhelmed by big changes? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文: Inside his pocket, the bone whistle pressed against his hand. Torn between his stubborn pride and deadly danger, Toby stared at the worn whistle in his freezing hand, wrestling fiercely with his conflicting thoughts. Faced with the biting cold and endless swirling snow, he came to realize that clinging to pointless pride was never true bravery. Shivering violently, he lifted the whistle to his cracked lips and blew hard. Sharp, clear notes of the whistle cut through the howling wind. He kept blowing at regular intervals, hoping the sound could travel far over the snow. The sound of the whistle drew anxious Grandpa and Jax over. Toby’s heart leaped with relief as they finally found him behind the pine tree. Grandpa wrapped a thick blanket around his trembling body and rubbed his cold arms. Jax explained how they followed the whistle here. Ashamed, Toby admitted that it had almost cost him his life just to prove his bravery, thanking them for rescuing him. On their way home, the whistle hanging around his neck, Toby thought to himself: True courage is knowing when you need help and daring to ask for it. 词类激活 行为类 ①凝视:stare at/fix one’s eyes on ②发现:find/spot ③意识到:come to realize/be aware of 情绪类 ①宽慰:relief/ease/comfort ②感激:thank/appreciate 【点睛】【高分句型1】Faced with the biting cold and endless swirling snow, he came to realize that clinging to pointless pride was never true bravery.(运用了过去分词短语faced with作状语以及that引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】Ashamed, Toby admitted that it had almost cost him his life just to prove his bravery, thanking them for rescuing him.(运用了形容词ashamed作状语、that引导宾语从句,以及现在分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $这是英语课听力部分,该部分分为第一第二两节。注意回答听力部分时,请先将答案标在试卷上。听力部分结束前,你将有两分钟的时间将你的答案转涂到答题卡上。现在是听力试音时间。So I hear you're working at larenz.
