When my daughter went overseas on her gap-year adventure, my teenage son and I found ourselves alone at home. Except for the occasional Sunday dinners with friends, we spent much of our time in separate rooms. As a single parent, much of our communication involves me reminding him to clean his room, eat his vegetables or do his homework.
I had a strong desire to hang out with my son outside the house, so I booked two tickets to Seoul for the September school holidays, surprising us both. With hurriedly packed suitcases and a basic travel plan built around some last-minute Google searches, we headed to the airport.
There was a sense of liberation in reaching a destination without any set plans. We just walked for hours every day, stopping when we were hungry and wandering the back streets. Neither of us could speak Korean, so if we wanted to talk, we only had each other, which gave us a connection we don’t always have in our daily lives. My son was naturally curious. which made him a good traveler. And instead of questioning the things he suggested, I just went with them.
He dragged me into shopping for jeans in stores down the street and made me catch buses that took us in the wrong direction entirely. He was unafraid and would walk into an art exhibition and manage to communicate enough, so the next minute we were offered cups of steaming green tea and shown artwork that wasn’t displayed on the walls.
I saw him differently in South Korea. Not the child running late for school or forgetting to eat a bowl of carrots and peas, but someone taller than me who understood when to stand on a train so someone older could take his seat, and how to handle situations like trying on clothes and buying things with his own money.
Traveling meant we were more like equals. And instead of feeling sad about the child version of him, I saw the adult he was becoming.

C To pick up a new language. D. To deeply expand their visions.

A. Curiosity, bravery and sociability (好交际).
B. Decisiveness (果断), endurance and safety awareness.
C. Generosity, patience and perseverance.
D. Language ability and a sense of direction.

C. Through dialogue and interaction. D. Through citing others’ comments.
60. What did the author probably think of the trip?
A. Amusing. B. Demanding. C. Satisfying. D. Embarrassing.

In theory, apps such as Vinted and Depop for selling second-hand clothes offer an opportunity to be both economical and fashionable, which can be good news for shoppers worried about rising costs and the sustainability (可持续性) of buying new clothes. Second-hand markets like these have long been praised as a wiser and more sustainable shopping choice. But our research has found these markets hide the issues caused by our consumption. They offer only individualized, gradual solutions to the vast global problem of waste.
Experts in the business world are enthusiastic about the “circular (循环的) economy” created by apps where “pre-loved” clothes are marketed as a means of extending the lives of clothing and other consumer goods. Some resale markets are firmly situated within the common-sense understanding of the circular economy, as they enable unwanted goods to move on within the system, rather than being thrown away. But a truly circular economy ought to not only recycle goods but also prevent the future production of waste. According to a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, by 2030 we will produce over 100 million tons of new clothing each year, contributing to climate change more than international flights and shipping combined. So second-hand reselling has not significantly impacted the production of the global textile (纺织品) market.
Buying and selling second-hand gets talked about and even advertised as what good, clever people do, especially under rising costs of living. Using a reselling app, or donating to and buying from charity shops, creates a “warm glow” that balances the guilt of buying something new.
However, second-hand markets are built to increase consumption, not cut it back. Charity shops, for example, under increasing pressure to be profitable, have to take on more professionalized and “for-profit” selling habits. Even luxury companies welcome second-hand shopping as it makes their market more attractive and means future consumers can get their goods.
Apart from the individualized solution offered by the second-hand market, we should instead consider collective approaches. It could involve making brands responsible for the full lifecycle of the things they create and holding producers and governments responsible for their environmental failings.
61. What is a long-standing belief about online second-hand markets?
A. They leave shoppers less worried. B. They are eco-friendly shopping options.
C. They ruin the shopping experience. D. They provide sustainable clothes.
62. Which of the following belongs to the “truly circular economy”?
A. Stopping future waste and recycling. B. Promoting the circulation of goods.
C. Extending the shelf life of goods. D. Producing more goods with less energy.
63. Why does the author mention the report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation?
A. To emphasize the necessity of recycling textiles.
B. To show second-hand markets’ failure to reduce textile waste.
C. To stress the need for innovation in the textile market at present.
D. To compare the main contributors to climate change.
64. What attitude do charity shops and luxury companies hold toward the second-hand market?
A. Tolerant. B. Neutral. C. Supportive. D. Contradictory.
65. What can be a solution to the waste crisis?
A. Removal of second-hand markets. B. increased funding for reselling apps.
C. Standardization of clothing production. D. Joint efforts of the whole society.
D
Everybody knows the feeling of being unable to make a certain life choice because circumstances don’t allow it. Maybe you think you can’t end an unhappy marriage because of the emotional impact on your loved ones, or that you can’t leave a disappointing career because of the financial cost. On a more ordinary level, you might feel that you can’t spend half an hour working on a creative project because there are too many emails to answer or too many household chores to complete. These are valid concerns, but the truth is, it’s almost never literally the case that you have to meet a deadline, answer an email, or fulfill a family obligation (义务、责任). As Sheldon B. Kopp noted, you’re free to do whatever you like — you just need to face the consequences.
Consequences aren’t optional. Every choice comes with some sort of trade-off (权衡), because at any instant, you can only pick one path. Spending a week in Rome means not spending that same week in Paris. Avoiding a conflict in the short-term means letting a bad situation worsen. As economist Thomas Sowell said, “There are no solutions, only trade-offs.” Relaxing in a messy home, as Laura Vanderkam suggests, might mean tolerating some discomfort about untidied toys, but it’s rarely worth worrying out. Most consequences we face aren’t really worth the stress.
However, you can’t wriggle free of the costs of your choice — that’s never an option. It means realizing that nothing can stop you from doing anything at all, as long as you’re willing to pay the price. For example, quitting your job might lead to financial insecurity, and ignoring emails might irritate a colleague. Even these unpleasant realities don’t change the fact that choice is about weighing trade-offs.
Most of us tend to exaggerate potential consequences to avoid bold choices. Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre observed that there’s a comfort in believing you have no options because it’s easier to feel trapped than to face the responsibilities of freedom. Once you begin to approach life as a matter of trade-offs, it becomes easier to say no to things you might not previously have dared to turn down.
Ultimately, freedom isn’t about avoiding limitations but embracing them. It means examining the trade-offs —because there will always be trade-offs — and choosing the one you’re willing to accept. True freedom lies not in escaping responsibilities but in deciding which responsibilities to take on.
66. Why does the author argue that people often feel unable to make certain life choices?
A. They are forced by external factors to avoid making decisions.
B. They think others will solve their problems for them.
C. They believe circumstances leave them with no options.
D. They prioritize long-term consequences over immediate actions.
67. Why does the author believe that “trade-offs” are unavoidable in life, according to the second paragraph?
A. Because every choice comes with a cost.
B. Because people are afraid of short-term conflicts.
C. Because making choices complicates life.
D. Because people need to follow social rules.
68. What does the underlined phrase “wriggling free of the costs of your choice” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. Refusing to make trade-offs or sacrifices.
B. Gaining freedom without facing limitations.
C. Making decisions without considering their consequences.
D. Escaping the responsibilities associated with making a choice.
69. What is the author’s perspective on freedom as mentioned in the passage?
A. Freedom comes from refusing to take any risks.
B. True freedom is being free from obligations and responsibilities.
C. Freedom is achievable when others understand your decisions.
D. Freedom means examining trade-offs and making choices despite limitations.
70. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Freedom means avoiding potential consequences.
B. Every choice involves trade-offs and consequences.
C. People shouldn’t prioritize personal freedom over obligations.
D. Life is full of unavoidable limitations that prevent true freedom.

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
If you are in the market looking for a new bike, maybe you would like to consider this bicycle. The brainchild of Israeli inventor Izhar Gafni, the fully functional bike that costs just $ 10 to make, is made entirely of cardboard (硬纸板).
Mr. Gafni came up with the idea after he heard about a working canoe that had been made of cardboard. However, when he suggested the idea to engineers, they all told him that it was impossible. Not ready to accept failure, Mr. Gafni decided to try to build one himself. However, the task turned out to be harder than he had thought. Considering that the cardboard is normally used to make just boxes, there was not much idea on how to even get started.
While being able to get the design right, his biggest difficulty was to create a bike strong enough to carry a rider of almost any size and weight. After experimenting with several choices he found out that by using the Japanese principals of origami (折纸) he could increase the weight the cardboard can bear. Therefore, he made the bike strong enough to carry a real rider. He then had to figure out a coating that would protect the bike in all kinds of weather conditions. While getting it right took a few models, the final result is a new bike coated with a finish (抛光) that gives it the look and feel of lightweight plastic. It can carry as much as 485 pounds.
Mr. Gafni is now working with some businessmen to get his cardboard creation into stores by late 2018. Considering that it costs only ,80- $90, which makes it the coolest, cheapest, most eco-friendly bike in the world!

76. Dear Chris,
I’m glad to receive your letter. As a Senior Two student facing heavy academic pressure, I keep doing sports every day. After the last class, I spend about twenty minutes running on the school track. On Saturday mornings, I play table tennis with my teammates in the school sports hall.
Sports bring me plenty of benefits. It builds up my strength and prevents me from feeling tired easily. Moreover, physical activity helps release my pressure from endless exams. After exercise, I can calm down and concentrate more efficiently on my studies.
I recommend you pick a sport you enjoy and stick to it. Try to avoid sitting before the screen for long. Even 20 minutes of daily exercise will keep you fit and positive.
Yours,
Li Jin
