The students in our design club were asked to make a cover for a class magazine. We had one rule: use materials that would otherwise be thrown away. My first idea was to make the cover as colourful as possible. I filled the table with paper shapes and started sticking them down.

When I showed the cover to the group, no one spoke for a moment. Then Nia said, “I like the colours, but where will the (11) ______ go?” I had forgotten that readers needed to see the magazine’s name. I felt a little (12) ______. I had spent so long on the picture that I had not thought about the reader’s (13) ______.

I was ready to pull everything off, but Nia stopped me. “What if we make a paper frame for the title?” she asked. We tried a red frame, but the words were still hard to (14) ______ against the bright shapes. So we tested a plain white one (15) ______. This time the name stood out.

The next problem was the cover’s size. We had used a piece of card from an old box without (16) ______ its size first. It was wider than the pages. Sam suggested cutting the extra part away, but the thick card was (17) ______ to cut neatly. We asked our teacher for help and used a ruler to mark the line (18) ______ cutting. The result was much tidier.

At our next meeting, we put the cover beside two other designs. Instead of voting immediately, we invited a few students to look at each one for ten seconds and tell us (19) ______ they noticed. Most could page number 0

In the end, the class chose our cover. I was pleased, but the most useful part was not hearing that we had (21) ______. It was seeing how the design changed when other people (22) ______ questions. I used to think asking for advice meant my work was not good enough. Now I know that a question can help me see a problem I might (23) ______ miss.

The finished cover still had some of my paper shapes. It also had Nia’s frame, Sam’s measuring idea and the readers’ words. We had made something none of us could have made in quite the same way (24) ______. That is why I now leave space in my first plan for other people’s (25) ______.

B  A Place for Questions

When Mr Chen asked the class to write questions about a science experiment, Ada wrote none. She had followed every step, and the result was correct. “I have no questions,” she said.

Her partner Jun had a different problem. His result was not what the instructions predicted. He wanted to repeat the experiment immediately, but Ada suggested comparing their notes first. They found that Jun had used warmer water. Was that the reason for the difference? They could not be sure because there might have been other differences too.

The pair decided to repeat the experiment several times. They kept the amount of water and other steps the same, but changed its temperature. This time, the results changed with the temperature. Jun wrote down both the results and the question that had led to the new test.

Ada later said that she had thought a correct result was the end of learning. Jun’s unexpected result showed her a different starting point. The class did not treat his first result as something to hide. They used it to ask a question they could investigate.

30. Why did Ada first write no question?

A. She had not read the steps. B. Her result matched the instructions.
C. Jun had written them all. D. She was absent from the experiment.

31. What did Ada suggest before Jun repeated the experiment?

A. Comparing their notes. B. Asking another group for its answer.
C. Using less water. D. Changing every step.

32. Why did they keep other steps the same?

A. To finish without recording results. B. To make every result match.
C. To avoid using warm water. D. To see whether temperature made a difference.

33. What changed Ada’s view?

A. She learned to repeat an experiment without a plan.
B. She decided correct results are never useful.
C. She learned that an unexpected result can lead to a useful question.
D. She found that questions only come from success.

C  Choosing a Route

A class was planning a visit to a museum. The train was quicker and the station was near the school, but the museum was a 20-minute walk from the station. The bus stopped outside the museum, but its timetable allowed less time for the visit.

Before choosing, the class listed what mattered: travel time, cost and how far everyone would need to walk. They learned that the train tickets cost less for a group, while the bus company charged the same price even if several seats were empty.

They first thought about taking the train both ways. Then they learned that a road race would close the walking route between the museum and station in the afternoon. Rather than cancel the visit, they chose the train for the morning and booked the bus for the return.

The plan was more complicated than using one type of transport, but it gave the class enough time at the museum. The students also checked that the bus stop was accessible to a classmate who found long walks difficult. They learned that the quickest option for one part of a journey is not always the best choice for the whole trip.

34. What was an advantage of taking the bus?

A. It stopped outside the museum. B. It cost less for a group.
C. It started next to the school. D. It had no fixed timetable.page number 2
