Mr. Johnson, a high school history teacher, had long noticed a problem in his classroom. While his students could carefully remember dates, names and events for exams, they always failed to understand the human side of history. To them, the past seemed only facts, without emotion, struggle or personal meaning. Wanting to fix this gap, Mr. Johnson decided to completely change his teaching method, trading a traditional research report for a story-writing task.
He asked his students to pick a historical person and write a story from the person’s point of view. The task was confusing at first, but soon the classroom was full of active questions and discussion. One student learned deeply about the life of a young soldier in World War I, writing a sad and moving story. Another wrote about a female scholar from the Renaissance, making up a story of her love for learning being held back by social rules.
Mr. Johnson was surprised by the big change in his students. The essays he got were not just correct; they were full of real feelings and a clear understanding of people’s thoughts. The students had stopped just repeating facts and truly connected with history, seeing historical people with many different sides. In later class talks, their questions changed from “What happened?” to “Why did they feel that way?” and “What would I have done?”. This story-writing method didn’t just help them remember facts better; it built up their ability to think deeply and their real care for how others felt.
Inspired by this success, Mr. Johnson has now made story-telling a regular part of his lessons. He believes that when students learn to experience history through story-telling, they do more than just remember it — they start to understand its long-lasting effects on their own lives and what it means to be human in general. In his classroom, history is no longer just a subject about the past; it has become a talk with the past.
4. What was the original problem of Mr. Johnson’s students?
A. They preferred science over history.
B. They showed little interest in history.
C. They could not memorize historical facts.
D. They failed to connect with history emotionally.
5. How did Mr. Johnson change his teaching method?
A. He gave students more fact-based research papers.
B. He showed more historical documentaries with facts.
C. He invited historians to give lectures in his classroom.
D. He asked students to write in a historical person’s voice.
6. What can we learn about the students from paragraph 3?
A. They got much higher grades in history exams.
B. They enjoyed reading more than writing stories.
C. They began to see historical people as real persons.
D. They still thought history was boring and meaningless.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. History should value facts over emotions.
B. History is more than facts — it’s human stories.
C. Students should learn history through story writing.
D. Students should ask questions when learning history.
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

How can a country give its economy a quick push in a short term? Just host a major concert series to encourage consumption (消费). However, only a small number of performers can create a huge economic effect. One of the best examples is American singer Taylor Swift. Economists have even created a new word called Swiftconomics to describe the economic effect caused by her concerts.
Taylor Swift’s concerts often bring large amounts of money to the cities where she performs. One reason her concerts have such a strong effect is that many fans turn the concert into a travel experience. They arrive days before the event, visit local sights, stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and buy souvenirs. Even after the concert, many visitors keep spending money in the city. Because of this, the economic benefits are much larger than ticket sales alone. Experts believe her concerts have created billions of dollars in economic activity. Some people have even jokingly called her a walking GDP.
China is also exploring ways to use concerts to support local economies. Many cities now regard concerts not only as joy, but also as a chance to introduce the city to visitors. During big concerts, extra trains are added for travelling fans to ensure smooth trips. Cities like Hangzhou and Chengdu have launched “Concert + Tourism” packages, including discounted hotels, guided tours and exclusive access (专属通道) to attractions for ticket holders. The goal is to turn a one-night show into a multi-day tourism experience.
However, challenges remain. Overcrowding, traffic jams and rising prices may weaken these positive effects. Local governments are improving planning to balance economic gains with residents’ daily lives. Experts believe that the concert economy is here to stay. As long as people desire live music and shared experiences, cities will find creative ways to make use of its power. With smart transport, local cooperation and digital marketing, the future of the concert economy looks bright.
8. Why is Taylor Swift mentioned?
A. To praise her music talent. B. To prove tourism’s power.
C. To explain a concert effect. D. To introduce a famous singer.
9. What does the underlined phrase “a walking GDP” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. An economic influencer. B. A wealthy superstar.
C. An attractive artist. D. A popular musician.
10. What does China’s railway system do to meet the need?
A. Offer more trains. B. Lower ticket prices.
C. Open new railway lines. D. Upgrade railway system.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New chances for urban tourism B. The Rise of the Concert Economy
C. Hidden risks of live concerts D. The Future of Concert Tourism
C 9. A 10. A 11. B

根据第一段“However, only a small number of performers can create a huge economic effect. One of the best examples is American singer Taylor Swift. Economists have even created a new word called Swiftconomics to describe the economic effect caused by her concerts.(然而,只有少数表演者能够产生巨大的经济效应。
根据第三段“During big concerts, extra trains are added for travelling fans to ensure smooth trips.(大型演唱会期间,会为前来的粉丝加开列车,保障行程顺畅)”可知,中国铁路通过增开更多列车来满足需求。
D
Crows (乌鸦) are very smart birds. They can count, tell human faces, and even use tools. Recently, a popular story said that a Swedish town was training crows to pick up cigarette butts (烟头). While this project isn’t actually happening now, the idea is based on real science.
In 2022, a researcher named Hans Christian Hanssen proposed “Corvid Cleaning”. The plan was to train wild crows to collect cigarette rubbish and drop it into special bins (垃圾箱). In return, the bins would give the birds food as a reward (回报). The idea drew international attention, and some experts even praised its possibilities to cut down litter in the city. However, the business behind the project failed in 2025. Despite this, false news about the program continues to spread online.
Why did the project fail? A 2024 study pointed out some serious worries. Researchers worried about the health risks to the crows and whether the public would accept animals cleaning up human waste. Besides this, the business itself was short of money. This wasn’t the first try either. A French theme park tried something similar in 2018 with mixed results. In the end, the question isn’t just whether we can train crows to clean, but should we?
But the story also draws attention to a huge environmental problem. Cigarette butts are the world’s most littered item. Humans throw away around 4.5 trillion butts every year, and that number could soon double. These butts take years to break down and give off harmful chemicals into soil and waterways, harming both wildlife and the environment.
While using clever crows as cleaners makes for an eye-catching headline, the real lesson is about human responsibility. Instead of depending on animals to fix our problems, we need to address cigarette pollution at its source through better waste management and a change of smoking rules. Crows are very smart, but at the end of the day, protecting the planet is our job, not theirs.
12. What was the main purpose of the “Corvid Cleaning” project?
A. To create a new bird shelter. B. To study the cleverness of crows.
C. To test special trash bins in Sweden. D. To train crows to clear cigarette waste.
13. What can be inferred about the project from Paragraph 3?
A. It faced money problems and people’s doubts. B. It was completely rejected by the public.
C. It needed better management and more money. D. It brought health risks to the local citizens.
14. How does the author show the seriousness of cigarette pollution in paragraph 4?
A. By explaining a key idea. B. By showing facts and results.
C. By asking readers questions. D. By sharing personal experiences.
15. What does the author express in the last paragraph?
A. Crows are too smart for cleaning tasks. B. Theme parks should stop using wild animals.
C. Humans should deal with pollution themselves. D. We should not believe false stories about animals.
D 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第二段“The plan was to train wild crows to collect cigarette rubbish and drop it into special bins (垃圾箱). In return, the bins would give the birds food as a reward (回报).(该计划是训练野生乌鸦收集香烟垃圾,并把垃圾丢进专用垃圾箱。作为回报,垃圾箱会给乌鸦食物作为奖励)”可知,“Corvid Cleaning” 项目的主要目的是训练乌鸦清理香烟垃圾。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Researchers worried about the health risks to the crows and whether the public would accept animals cleaning up human waste. Besides this, the business itself was short of money.(研究人员担心乌鸦面临的健康风险,以及公众能否接受动物清理人类垃圾这件事。除此之外,该项目本身资金短缺)”可知,这个项目面临资金问题以及人们的质疑。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Humans throw away around 4.5 trillion butts every year, and that number could soon double. These butts take years to break down and give off harmful chemicals into soil and waterways, harming both wildlife and the environment.(人类每年扔掉大约4.5万亿个烟头,这个数字很快可能翻倍。这些烟头需要很多年才能降解,还会向土壤和水道释放有害化学物质,危害野生动物和环境)”可知,作者通过列举事实以及带来的后果来说明香烟污染的严重性。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Instead of depending on animals to fix our problems, we need to address cigarette pollution at its source through better waste management and a change of smoking rules.(我们不能依靠动物解决我们的问题,而要通过完善垃圾管理、调整吸烟规定,从源头处理香烟污染)”可知,作者想表达人类应该自己处理污染问题。

A. reminded提醒;B. observed观察;C. ordered命令;D. requested请求。根据前文“Every afternoon, Lina visited the turtle.”及本句中的“eat small fish and swim in a small pool”可知,主人公来看望海龟,海龟的进食和游动,这些都是她观察到的情况,observe意为“观察”,且与空后内容构成observe sb./sth. do sth.

It was June, the last day of school. My class of first-graders was feverishly anticipating their summer vacation. To add a joyful flavor, I had some balloons brought in, but for me, this holiday was bittersweet. I’d just moved to this city and couldn’t afford to fly back to accompany Dad. He was desperately missing me, for it was his first summer without me.
When switching off the light on my way out, I noticed the balloons near the window. Unsure what to do with them, I grabbed the thirteen strings and stuffed them into the backseat of my car. Their rainbow of colors lifted my spirits and gratefully, I didn’t feel so alone.
As the city was still foreign to me, I decided to go for a drive and soon found myself winding down a stretch of road where the trees overhead covered each other. The branches reminded me of two friends stretching out to greet each other. Before long, a retirement home appeared. It was a place with a feeling of forgottenness and I spotted a man sitting alone in the shade outside.
I felt a sudden urge to pull in. But the balloons in my backseat blocked my view-then I knew what to do with them. Opening the door and grabbing one of the strings, I waved to the man, and he smiled. His name was Daniel and he was about Dad’s age. When I handed him the balloon, he grinned (咧嘴笑),“Thanks. It gives a little color to my life.” While tying it to his chair, he looked happier than when I arrived. So I smiled, “You’re welcome, Daniel. Perhaps I’ll see you again sometime.”
Unexpectedly, he replied, “Perhaps, but probably not. Visitors are always welcome, but rarely come.” His words forced me to slide over an old chair next to his. Then we began chatting about our lives and his voice always reminded me of Dad. I’d thought it would be boring talking with a stranger. But it wasn’t; it was enlightening — I had been feeling lonely, and so had Daniel, and so had the residents in the retirement home.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I remembered the other twelve balloons in the backseat. An idea sparked. I hurried to the car and returned with the vibrant bunch. Knocking on each resident’s door, I offered a balloon and a smile. Faces lit up like children receiving candies. An elderly lady tied hers to a walker, murmuring “Just like my granddaughter’s birthday.” Soon the courtyard bloomed with floating rainbows. Laughter echoed through the once-silent corridors. As twilight painted the sky, I sat surrounded by storytellers sipping lemonade. Their wrinkled hands patted mine gratefully. For the first time since moving here, loneliness dissolved like sugar in warm tea.
Over the next six months, I visited Daniel often. We planted sunflowers by his window, their golden faces tracking the sun like old friends nodding hello. He taught me chess moves from his army days, and I read him newspaper crosswords. Gradually, my students joined our visits, crafting paper cranes with nimble fingers while veterans shared wartime stories. By Christmas, the home buzzed with cookie-baking aromas and carol singers. When Dad finally visited in December, he found me surrounded by silver-haired “adopted grandparents”. His eyes glistened as Daniel shook his hand, “Your daughter’s brought spring to our winter.”

C
