For years, Peter M. Williams spent his days, with a small magnifying glass (放大镜), bringing old, broken watches back to life. The master watchmaker never expected many people to care. But today, the 54-year-old Scotsman has over 2.5 million followers online by simply fixing watches.
Williams runs a small repair shop in Edinburgh. He started posting videos out of boredom. He takes apart disabled watches other shops have given up on. One video, repairing a 1940s military watch run over by a car, has been viewed over 80 million times.
“I call myself a ’restoration artist’, but really, I’m just someone who likes to fix things,” Williams said. Unlike fast automated production lines, his work is very slow. “You aren’t just fixing a machine; you are repairing a memory,” he says. “A customer sent me his father’s watch last week. It hadn’t worked for 35 years. When I got the second hand moving again, he cried.”
Many people walk past broken watches in flea markets, seeing only waste. But Williams sees something they don’t. Williams’ success is part of the “mending movement” online, a stand against throwaway culture. While his shop mainly fixes expensive watches, he also supports repairing cheap but meaningful items. “People ask, ‘Is it worthwhile fixing a 50-year-old watch?’” I tell them, “‘Can you change the memory of your wedding day?’” he says.
Although his father was a clockmaker, Williams didn’t want to follow that way at first. He chose to study design instead. After losing his job during the 2008 financial crisis, he returned to the family workbench. “I don’t regret choosing a different path first,” he says. “This isn’t just a job; it’s my family’s heritage.”
He now sells restoration tool sets for beginners and offers online lessons to help keep watchmaking alive. “My goal is to make people understand that ‘broken’ doesn’t mean ‘garbage’,” he says. “With patience, anything can tick again.” As Williams likes to say, don’t judge a watch by its silence.
24. Why did Williams start posting videos?
A. To show off great skills. B. To pass the time.
C. To ease others’ boredom. D. To draw attention.
25. What does Williams mean by mentioning “repairing a memory”?
A. Old watches hold emotional value. B. Old watches improve memory.
C. Old watches keep valuable photos. D. Old watches have resale value.
26. How can we describe Williams’ career path?
A. Easy and promising. B. Smooth and profitable.
C. Risky but successful. D. challenging but meaningful.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. A watched pot never boils.
B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. Better to mend than to end.
D. A penny saved is a penny earned.
C
The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was first done by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a preschool were placed in a room. One sweet food chosen by the child was put on a table. Every child was told that if they could wait 15 minutes before eating the sweet food, they would get another one. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies of these children showed that the ability to wait for the second sweet food had something to do with different kinds of success in their later life.
When we grow into adults, we meet a new kind of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats. Instead, computers, mobile phones and tablet computers bring us all kinds of information from the whole world, draw our attention. The information influences us just like marshmallows influence little kids.
Sweet food can easily tempt us because the ancient humans lived in a world with little calorie-rich (high-energy) food. So our brains formed a special way to react to sweet food: we will feel happy and satisfied after eating them. But humans have greatly changed the world now. It takes us little money and little work to get calorie-rich food. However, our brains are still the same as those of people thousands of years ago. This difference explains why many of us have difficulty saying “no” to nice-tasting food we know we should not eat.
The same thing happens when we face information. When human beings first appeared, there was very little new information around us. For this reason, our brains learned to value new information highly. But worldwide online connections have greatly changed our information world. Now new information comes to us non-stop. So, just as we need to think carefully about what food we take in, we also need to think carefully about what information we take in. We should say no to useless “mental junk food”, so that we can make good use of our time.
28. What did the children need to do to get a second sweet food in Mischel’s test?
A. Finish a test all by themselves. B. Share sweet food with other kids.
C. Show good manners to the scientists. D. Wait for fifteen minutes before eating.
29. According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between ________.
A. the calorie-poor world and our wish for food.
B. nice-tasting food and our wish to keep healthy.
C. the rich food supply and our unchanged brains.
D. the shortage of sugar and our body’s food needs.
30. What does the author advise us to do?
A. Accept all new information happily.
B. Keep our online information world safe.
C. Get information from many different ways.
D. Choose information we read or watch carefully.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Eat Less, Read More B. The Marshmallow Test for Grownups
C. The Later, the Better D. The Hard Fact about Early Humans
D
Fishing tools that are thrown away are a serious danger to ocean life. These “ghost nets” continue to catch and kill animals even after being thrown away by fishermen. They either float in the water or sit on the seabed, causing great harm to sea wildlife.
The problem is highlighted by a single net found in Puget Sound in 2009. Within just six months, it had already caught over 450 salmon, 1,300 sharks, 1,800 birds, 16,900 crabs, and 11 seals. Scientists believe that 10 to 30 percent of all business fishing tools are lost or thrown away every year. This means countless nets remain in the ocean, killing sea animals nonstop.
However, an important program called Fishing for Energy is working to deal with it. It brings together several organizations, including Covanta Energy Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Organization. Since 2008, they have successfully taken away nearly four million pounds of lost fishing tools from the ocean.
Collecting lost fishing tools is a difficult task. It requires finding the tools underwater, pulling them up, and bringing them to coast. To make it easier, Fishing for Energy has set up collection sites at ports in nine states. They give free boxes where fishermen can put the retrieved tools. The program also offers prizes to fishermen who take away fishing waste from the sea and provides them with free educational programs.
Once collected, the tools are recycled to make power for locals. Any metal parts made of materials like gold, silver or iron are taken away, and the materials left are turned into energy at special factories. The program has grown rapidly. It started with one disposal site (垃圾处理场) in Massachusetts in 2008 and now has 55 sites across twelve states. Fishermen are developing new ways to find more tools, and local groups are giving money to workshops to find better solutions. Additionally, the program supports the development of new technology that makes fish-catching tools stop working after a certain period, as required by law.
32. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The ghost nets around Puget Sound caught 11 seals in total in 2009.
B. The problem caused by ghost nets is less serious than people imagine.
C. A large number of sea animals die because of ghost nets every year.
D. The ghost nets have covered around 20% of business fishing nets so far.
33. What does the underlined word “retrieved” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Used. B. Collected. C. Repaired. D. Bought.
34. What do we know about the “Fishing for Energy” program?
A. It helps local people to get more power.
B. It has 56 waste treatment places in total.
C. It requires fishermen to buy the collection boxes.
D. It provides fishermen with new fishing techniques.
35. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Ghost Nets: The Silent Killer for Sea Animals
B. Fishing for Energy: A Project for Producing Power
C. Ghost Nets: The Huge Treasure for Power Production
D. Fishing for Energy: A Program for Saving Ocean Life

Deciding whether or not to take part in an extracurricular (课外的) activity can be a challenge. Before signing up to play on the volleyball team, first consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a decision. 36 Students are successful when they take part in many activities. They do well in their classes and feel more connected with school. Research shows that students taking part in extracurricular activities have better grades. Extracurricular activities also help students make new friends and maintain lasting relationships. 37 Even though we became friends a long time ago, we are still close today.
While these activities have many advantages, students should consider the downside as well. 38 Doing extracurricular activities can be too much for students who do not perform good time management. Students need to be good at managing their time.
Another downside of extracurricular activities involves transportation. 39 A few of my classmates joined the school’s cultural club. They later discovered that the members met after school. These students dropped out of the club because they had to catch their buses.
Only you can decide if extracurricular activities are right for you. These activities can help you succeed in many areas of your life. 40 Are you up for a challenge?
A. Some clubs met after school.
B. We were both in the same age group.
C. I met my best friend when we were on the swim team.
D. One downside is that it can create a busy life for students.
E. Many students are tired of all the things they have to do.
F. Taking part in extracurricular activities has many advantages.
G. However, you need good time management skills to deal with a busy life.

Dear Chris,
Knowing that you are troubled by spending too much time on short videos and suffering from low study efficiency, I’m writing to show my sincere concern.
It is common for teenagers to be attracted by online videos, so you don’t have to feel upset. Here are some practical suggestions. First, you’d better set a fixed time limit for such entertainment. Besides, you can replace meaningless browsing (浏览) with beneficial hobbies like reading and sports, which can calm your mind. Most importantly, focus more on your schoolwork and arrange your spare time wisely.
I firmly believe you can balance study and entertainment well. Wish you all the best!
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 1. W: What a pretty town! It’s cleaner than Maple Town.
M: Yes. I bet we’re already close to the ocean. I can smell it. Let’s hurry up — the festival is this way.
Text 2. M: Our class is going to rural Mexico. And it is said the trip costs five hundred dollars.
W: That’s too expensive. I can only afford up to $300.
M: Well, the school will give you half of the amount.
Text 3. M: I’m having a hard time with this question.
W: OK, did you miss my class yesterday?
M: No, but I don’t remember this problem.
W: Let’s meet here in the lecture hall this afternoon, and I’ll help you with it.
Text 4. W: Hello, I live in apartment C2. I called to complain about the noise and I don’t think it’s coming from upstairs.
M: Oh, it must be from the air conditioner. I’ll send someone to check.
Text 5. M: What shall we do next?
W: Why don’t we go for a picnic at Hyde Park first? Then, we can go to the London Eye later.
M: Why not? It will be great to see the city from up high in the evening.
Text 6. W: What time are you going to work tomorrow, Mark?
M: Oh, I forgot to tell you, Ellen. I’m not working tomorrow morning. So I decided to take the car to the garage to have it serviced. Why?
W: I wanted a lift to the shops. Never mind. I’ll take the bus.
M: What if I took you there before going to the repair shop? Would that do?
W: That would be fine, thanks.
Text7 M: You should definitely go see the school play. It’s a great play.
W: Really? But I have a lot of homework to do.
M: Please go! Because I am playing the lead role tonight. Last night, Ben was the leading man and tonight we are taking each other’s roles for the performance.
W: Oh, great! I didn’t know you were in the play. Why didn’t you tell me?
M: I’ve been so busy practicing the play that I haven’t had time for my friends, but I’d really like you to come tonight to watch.
W: Of course! I will definitely come.
Text 8 W: What exam did you take?
M: I took IELTS. It’s an important international English exam.
W: Why did you take it?
M: I want to work as an air traffic controller, and the job requires good English skills. I need to get at least a 6.5 in the exam.
W: Do you think you’ll get it?
M: I think so. I’m sure I did the exam quite well. They will send the results by post in two weeks’ time.
W: How will you celebrate if you pass?
M: I’ll go out for dinner with my friends Tom and Mark.
W: And what will you do if you don’t get a 6.5?
M: I’ll carry on studying and I’ll take the exam again as soon as I can.
W: Good luck.
Text 9 M: I’m glad you had time today to work on our project.
W: Me, too. It’s due in a week and a half, after all. I think we’re going to get a pretty clear result.
M: Most likely. The fish in the colder water are not as orange as the fish in the warmer water.
W: I agree. I know it’s hard to keep the water exactly the right temperature in this lab, but you can see the difference in the fish.
M: Yeah, we’ve had some differences in the water temperature, especially at night.
W: I think we should write our lab report as soon as possible.
M: I’m afraid I don’t agree. Maybe we’ll get clearer results if we give the experiment more time.
W: OK. I see your point. Are these the notes you took yesterday?
M: Yep.
W: Do you mind if I copy them? I can’t seem to find my notebook.
M: Go right ahead.
Text 10【原文】W: Well, we certainly have a busy day ahead of us, so let’s get started, shall we? Let’s have a look at the map of the museum now.
The door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center. Once we pick up our entrance tickets, I’d ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area.
Now, once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center, on the back left-hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you’ll find the 3D theater. I strongly recommend that you make time for the 30-minute presentation in the theater.
Running along the right-hand side of the main exhibition center is the Modern Art Studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the 20th century, but you can also attend a workshop run by a local artist. OK, that’s the art museum.
