Laughter is the Best Medicine
Do you often laugh with friends? Do you giggle at jokes? If you do, that is great, because just as the saying goes: Laughter is the best medicine!
People start laughing from a young age. At around three months old, babies learn to laugh. Even babies that cannot see or hear can laugh. Laughter is a natural part of life! But why is it so important?
First of all, laughter is good for our body. When we laugh, our body takes in more oxygen (氧气). Every part of our body needs oxygen to work well. Laughter also makes our body work out.
Our heart, stomach, and even our shoulders work hard when we laugh! But after we laugh, our muscles feel more relaxed. A good laugh can help you feel relaxed for up to 45 minutes. Over time, laughter helps our body to get stronger, fight off more diseases, and even create special chemicals to help us feel less pain! Laughter also has many benefits for our mood. When we laugh, it makes us feel less stressed or anxious, and things will not seem so bad. Laughing also causes our brain to release chemicals that make us feel calm and happy. Scientists even think that smiling often is enough to increase these chemicals in our brain.
But it is not always easy to laugh on our own. We are 30 times more likely to laugh when we are around others. According to some scientists, laughter can show others that we want to be close to them. Monkeys clean one another’s fur to show friendship. But people laugh so that others will know that they are being friendly.
Some people even join laughing groups. Although they force themselves to laugh at first, after hearing other people laugh, their laughter becomes real! Before long, the whole group of people is laughing hard. The next time you feel unhappy, try thinking about something funny. Although you might not want to laugh when you are sad, doing so can make you feel better!
1. According to the passage, what can laughter do for our body?
A. It makes us feel more tired.
B. It helps us fight off more diseases.
C. It makes our heart work more slowly.
2. According to the passage, when are we 30 times more likely to laugh?
A. When we are alone.
B. When we are around others.
C. When we watch TV.
3. What does the writer suggest you do when you feel unhappy?
A. Try thinking about something funny.
B. Join a laughing group right away.
C. Go to sleep to forget your sadness.

Many children want to develop a hobby. You’ll need to find different interests and decide which hobby really interests you. This may be hard to do. Here are four great reasons for developing hobbies:
Hobbies help build a teen’s confidence (自信).
By finding an area of interest, a teen can build his skill. This leads to positive results and builds teenagers’ confidence.
Hobbies help teens have a sense of their identity (身份认同).
Our likes and dislikes help let us know who we are as people. Hobbies help by sending a signal, “I like doing this. This makes me feel good about myself. Therefore, this is a part of who I am.”
Hobbies keep teens from getting bored.
Bored teens look for things to do and are more likely to do something bad. Helping teens develop a hobby is helping them stay out of trouble.
Hobbies will help teens to get on well with their parents.
When a teen is busy with a hobby, his parents have easy access (机会) to something to praise him about. They can communicate with each other easily.

①An emergency is a sudden situation that can harm someone’s health, safety, or property. Knowing how to handle it can make a big difference. The key is to stay calm and act wisely.
②First, don’t panic. If you feel scared or confused, stop and take deep breaths. This helps you think clearly instead of acting out of fear. Staying calm also helps others around you feel less afraid. Tell yourself you can manage the situation. Look around carefully to understand what’s happening before you do anything.
③Next, decide what kind of emergency it is. Is someone hurt, like from a car accident or a fall? Or is it something like a fire or a flood that could damage a building? For example, if someone is bleeding a lot or can’t breathe, it’s a medical emergency. If it’s a fire or a chemical spill, it might be a danger to everyone nearby. Knowing this helps you choose the right action.
④Then, call for help. In the USA, dial 911. In other places, use the local emergency number. Tell the person on the phone where you are and what’s wrong. Answer their questions clearly—they need information to send the right help fast. Even if you can’t talk much, stay on the line so they can find you.
⑤If it’s safe, help others. If someone is in danger, guide them to a safe place. But if it’s too risky, wait for trained people to step in. If someone is hurt and awake, talk to him or her. Ask their name or tell them help is coming to keep them calm.
⑥Emergencies can change quickly, so keep watching the situation. By staying calm and acting smart, you can help yourself and others stay safe.
8. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Someone’s health. B. An emergency. C. A social situation.
9. How does the writer support the idea of staying calm in Paragraph 2?
A. By explaining its benefits. B. By comparing it to panic. C. By telling a personal story.
10. Why is it important to decide the type of emergency?
A. To know what action to take.
B. To stay calm and think clearly.
C. To tell others what happened.
11. Which is the right structure of the passage?

六、阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分)
It can be hard to make time for a hobby when we have many important things to do. But hobbies might be more important than you think.
Physical hobbies like going hiking or playing tennis can help you to stay healthy. They keep you fit, and they can even lower stress and improve your memory and concentration. Other types of hobbies can also keep us healthy. Some scientists believe that making music can lower our blood pressure and make our bodies stronger. This makes it harder for us to fall sick. Playing an instrument also keeps our brains young. So, if you think that playing the guitar is a waste of time, remember that this hobby is actually a great way to stay healthy!
Hobbies are also good for your emotional well-being. Creative hobbies like painting or writing can help you deal with negative emotions by giving you a way to express how you feel. They can even make you feel good about yourself! In one study, after just 45 minutes of making art, most of the participants reported feeling more confident in themselves.
However, while hobbies have many benefits, it is important to find the right balance. Playing computer games or chatting online may be fun, but such hobbies usually involve a lot of screen time. That could cause problems such as eye strain or poor sleep. These activities are also usually done alone, and that could cause some people to feel lonely. Why not choose an outdoor hobby instead? Fresh air, green spaces, peace and quiet—these things help us to relax and feel good. And if you go hiking or fly a kite in the park, you can take a friend with you! Hanging out with friends reduces loneliness and can be a good way to build relationships.
Regardless of what your hobby is, it is important to make time for it. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

4. According to the passage, hobbies can make kids ________.

42. How do creative hobbies like painting or writing help us deal with negative emotions?
