Language Ability:

1. Ss can master key vocabulary and phrases: "seed", "scientist", "shake", "brave", "continue", "make sure", "provide", "more than", "hear about", and "the number of".

2. Ss can catch the main idea and detailed information of the passage about Zhong Yang by completing the timeline and matching paragraphs with topics.

3. Ss can understand and use the target structures: "It is + adj. + for sb. + to do sth.", "spend time (in) doing sth.", and "make sure that...".

4. Ss can use reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and context clues to guess the meanings of new words and phrases.

5. Ss can use a timeline to organize information and retell the story logically.

Teaching Procedures:

 

Step 1. Lead - in

1). Show a picture of Zhong Yang and ask Ss: "Who is he? What does he do? What do you know about him?"

2). Play a short video about Zhong Yang to introduce his background.

3). Present the title "The Inspiring Seed Scientist" and ask Ss to predict what a seed scientist does based on the title and the picture.

 

Step 2. Fast - reading

1). Ask Ss to read the text quickly and answer the questions: "Who was the seed scientist? What did he do?" (Answer: Zhong Yang; He collected seeds and researched plants.)

2). Activity 1c: Let Ss read the passage again and match each paragraph (1-5) with its topic.

   - Paragraph 1 matches Topic B: Introduction to Zhong Yang and seed banks.

   - Paragraph 2 matches Topic D: Becoming interested in seeds.

   - Paragraph 3 matches Topic E: Starting to work and collect seeds in Xizang.

   - Paragraph 4 matches Topic A: Training local students to do important work.

   - Paragraph 5 matches Topic C: What he left behind.

 

Step 3. Careful - reading

1). Activity 1d: Let Ss fill in the blanks with the information from the text and put the events into a timeline.
