million dogs in Britain, according to recent surveys. But experts say that there will be more dogs than cats next year as dogs become more and more popular.

7    The Queen is famous for her corgis(柯基犬)and is often photographed with them. A few TV stars even take their dogs shopping or to restaurants. Chihuahuas(吉娃娃狗)are especially popular as “handbag dogs” because they are so small.

When you walk in the forest, you see lots of trees. But a forest is much more than what you see.     11     Trees share information about their needs and send each other nutrients (营养物).

12     In fact, trees “talk” to and help each other through the underground network of fungi (真菌). Fungi are small living things. They can be found in soil. The fungi send nutrients to the trees, and make the trees “talk” to each other.

The network of fungi helps trees grow and stay healthy. Trees give sugars to fungi, and fungi help trees grow.     13     And through the network of fungi, trees can share water and nutrients. For example, if a baby tree can’t make enough food, other trees can send their nutrients to it through the network. Sometimes, a tree is page number 1

Driving a car is different in different places of the world.     16

But in some countries like the UK, Japan, and Australia, people drive on the left. Why?

A long time ago, people usually drove on the left. Some people say it started from the Roman times.     17     Most knights were right-handed, so they wore their swords on the left of their bodies. When they met someone on their way, they would use their swords. This way, they could greet people on the left. If you drive on the right, the sword may hurt the people on the left.

18     So people in the US and France wanted to make a change. They made the driver move from the back to the front. This let the driver move things from place to place. Horses pulled a wagon, and the driver would ride on the left horse. This let the driver use his whip (鞭子) in the right hand. When two wagons came face to face, the drivers kept their wagons to the right. Then they could see the way well, and keep away from each other.

The UK and a few other countries did not want to change.     19

Then in the 1900s, cars called the Ford Model T became very popular in the US. This car had a driver on the left and drove on the right of the road.     20     Soon, most countries started to drive on the right.

A.Things changed in the late 1700s.

B.And some think it had to do with knights.

C.If you drive, remember to stay on the right.

D.People around the world liked it very much.

E.They made driving on the left a rule in the 1800s.page number 2
