The projects have achieved good results. The most common practice of the schools is planting more trees around the playground. Trees provide cooler spaces in summer. They also bring birds and insects. Students, therefore, would like to go to the playground more often. They also become more connected to nature. Some schools even set up reading areas under these trees. Students can listen to birds singing while reading there. ________ For example, they turn some of the school grounds into vegetable fields or fruit gardens. The students work in teams and learn how to grow vegetables or fruits. In this way, they get hands-on learning experience. At harvest (收获) time, they share what they get from the fields and gardens, and they also harvest the joy of labor and cooperation. These reshaping projects make school grounds more popular with students. The reason behind the success is that students are included. After all, they are the users of the grounds. In many cases, designers first survey the students for their ideas. Then they draw up several designs for the students to vote on. When the project is completed, the students are invited to feed back on it so that it can be further improved in the future. 5. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about? A. The results of the projects. B. The importance of learning. C. The benefits of play space. D. The history of some schools. 6. What happens with more trees around the playground according to Paragraph 2? A. Students grow more fruits. B. The school turns cleaner. C. Students get closer to nature. D. The school raises more money. 7. Which of the following can be put in “________” in Paragraph 3? A. The changes make teachers happier. B. The changes make schools bigger. C. Some schools explore other possibilities. D. Some schools refuse to change. 8. What do the underlined words “feed back on” mean in Paragraph 4? A. Say goodbye to. B. Keep away from. C. Look down upon. D. Give advice on. A 6. C 7. C 8. 根据第一段“The projects have achieved good results.” The results of the projects。 根据第二段“They also become more connected to nature.” Students get closer to nature。 根据第三段“For example, they turn some of the school grounds into vegetable fields or fruit gardens.” Some schools explore other possibilities. 根据第四段“students are invited to feed back on it so that it can be further improved in the future.” Give advice on。 C In a small village, there lived a famous old carpenter(木匠). People travelled from far and wide to buy his furniture. One day, a young man came to learn from him. The young man loved working with wood but was always hurrying to finish things. After a few days of learning from the carpenter, the young man thought, “I can make furniture faster.” The old carpenter noticed this and said, “I can teach you to make furniture quickly, but first, you need to do a simple job.” He then passed the young man a rough board and said, “Make this board smooth.” The man thought it was easy. He sanded (用砂纸打磨) the board a few times and soon gave it back confidently. The old carpenter felt the board and said, “It is not smooth enough. Try again.” A little impatient, the young man sanded harder. But the old carpenter shook his head once again. Feeling sad, the young man started to think more. He wasn’t in a hurry anymore and sanded every part of the board carefully. This time, the old carpenter smiled. He smiled, too. 9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. A new study by scientists at MIT found that rice seeds(种子) can “hear” the sound of raindrops and use the information to “decide” when to grow. It’s not completely new. Earlier studies have already shown some plants could respond to(反应) the environment. They can sense the sounds when caterpillars eat leaves, and when bees fly past. The new study shows that plants are even smarter than we thought. To make sure the seeds respond to sound instead of water, scientists did a test. They chose to focus on rice seeds because rice is usually planted in water. Thousands of rice seeds were put in water. In this way, all of the seeds could get enough water to grow. Some stayed in quiet water, while others sensed man-made raindrops. The result was surprising. The seeds that “hear” raindrop sounds grew 30 to 40 percent faster than the ones in quiet water. This faster growth helps seeds live better in nature. Scientists also found out why this happens. Falling raindrops create clear vibrations in the water. Inside rice seeds, there are tiny parts called statoliths keeping balance. These parts move quickly when they feel the vibrations, which tells the seeds to start growing earlier. The scientists believe that sensing rain sounds may help seeds make sure they’re in a good place to grow. They think this special ability is not just for rice. 13. Why did scientists put all seeds in water? A. To test their quality. B. To count their number. C. To set them in the same condition. D. To keep them in quiet environment. 14. Which picture could show the result of the scientific test? A. B. C. D. 15. What does the underlined word “vibrations” probably mean? A. Scenes. B. Shakes. C. Shapes. D. Smells. 16. What will be probably talked about next? A. Whether other plant seeds share the ability. B. How plant seeds keep perfect balance. C. Why rice seeds live better in some places. D. How scientists carry out the rice seeds test. C 14. D 15. B 16. 根据文章第2段“Thousands of rice seeds were put in water. In this way, all of the seeds could get enough water to grow.” 根据文章第3段“The seeds that “hear” raindrop sounds grew 30 to 40 percent faster than the ones in quiet water.” 根据文章第3段“Falling raindrops create clear vibrations in the water. Inside rice seeds, there are tiny parts called statoliths keeping balance. These parts move quickly when they feel the vibrations”可推知,雨滴落入水中会产生能被种子内平衡结构感知的波动,结合常识可知雨滴击打水面会产生震动,因此vibrations的含义和“Shakes(振动)”一致。 根据文章第4段“They think this special ability is not just for rice.” We all answer questions every day. But how do you know if your answer is actually reasonable? Here are three simple ways to check. Use real-life examples Let’s say you are solving a science question, “Why do we feel cold in winter?” A reasonable answer is, “Because the temperature drops.” Now compare that with an unreasonable answer, “Because the sun gets angry.” The first answer uses facts. ___17___ When you give an answer, try to connect it to something you have actually seen or experienced. ___18___ Before you finish, ask yourself, “Is my answer close to what I expected?” Let’s do a quick math check. If you calculate 38×4, and you get 152, that feels right. But if you get 1,520, that is too big. Compare your answer with an estimate (估算). If they are very different, go back and check your work. Ask yourself questions This is the easiest method. Just ask yourself, “Is the answer reasonable?” “Can I explain the answer to a friend?” “Would my teacher accept the answer?” If you can’t explain your answer in simple words, you might not fully understand it yourself. ___19___ In short, a reasonable answer is logical, factual (事实的), close to your estimate, and easy to explain. ___20___ You will make fewer mistakes and feel more confident. A. Compare it with what you expected. B. Connect it with what you already know. C. A good answer should be easy to talk about. D. The second sounds funny and has no science behind it. E. It can affect lots of areas of your life, from dealing with challenges to making decisions. What is being independent? It means you should learn to look after yourself, make your decisions and be responsible for the things in your life. Being more independent has many benefits. Children and young people who are used to doing tasks by themselves are often willing to try new things, as well as cope (应对) better when things don’t go their way. Dr. Priya Nathwani, an expert, says, “As we grow up, it is important to be able to manage feelings and situations by ourselves. This helps us to become more confident about the world around us.” Being independent also helps to boost your self-esteem (自尊) and can make you feel less nervous. “Children can become more independent by trying new activities or solving problems by themselves,” says the expert. “Ask your parents or teacher to let you practice a skill on your own. If you don’t succeed for the first time, try again.” So, think about something you’d like to do on your own and give it a go. Don’t feel pressure to do everything all at once. Start small and build confidence in your abilities. Being independent doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. If you’re feeling worried or doing a difficult task, speak to someone you trust or ask for help. A big part of becoming more independent is having the confidence to know you are able to make decisions, try new things on your own and think for yourself. 41. B Many schools have started projects to make changes to their school grounds in order to make better use of them. B. C In a small village, there lived a famous old carpenter(木匠). A. Making furniture faster. B. Making the board smooth. C. Working with wood. D. Sanding the board several times. 10. How did the young man finish the job? A. He sanded every part carefully. B. Pleased→Impatient→Sad→Confident. D. Confident→Impatient→Sad→Pleased. 12. What can we learn from the story? A. The simple job needs less patience. B. A successful person moves forward quickly. C. Carpentry isn’t about shaping the mind. D. Success needs skill and patience. D It may sound like a magic story that plants can actually sense sounds around them. We all answer questions every day. E. Next time you finish a question, spend a few seconds checking. My son Tim was excited to try rock climbing and needed a partner. 41.
