Anna, a fourteen-year-old girl from England, is an exchange student in Nantong. On her first school trip, she visited a blue-print cloth workshop — a small house full of blue and white cloth. The moment she saw it, she fell in love with it.
The master there, Grandma Wang, is nearly seventy. She has made blue-print cloth for over fifty years. “The cloth is white and blue, like the sky and the clouds,” Grandma Wang told Anna, “but it takes more than thirty steps to make one piece. You need time and patience.”
Anna asked to learn. Grandma Wang agreed with a smile. The first week was hard. Anna’s hands were covered with blue dye, and her patterns looked like messy clouds. She felt sad and wanted to stop, but she remembered the words of her Chinese teacher: “Slow is beautiful.” So she kept practising every weekend.
Three months later, Anna made her own cloth — an English rose in the middle, with Chinese lotus flowers all around. Grandma Wang held it up to the sun and said, “This is the most beautiful piece in my workshop. It has two gardens in it.”
Before going back to England, Anna gave the cloth to Grandma Wang as a gift. “Friendship, like the cloth, needs time and patience,” Anna wrote in her diary. “Now I understand why my Chinese teacher loves this old art.”
54.What did Anna want to do when she first saw the blue-print cloth?

Many Grade 9 students say they have no time to exercise because of their homework. But scientists say this may be a mistake — exercise actually helps you study better.
Recently, a team of scientists studied 500 middle school students for a whole year. The students who exercised for about an hour a day did better in exams, especially in maths and English. Why? Exercise sends more blood and oxygen to the brain. It also helps the brain build new connections, just like rain helps a young tree grow.
Exercise is also good for feelings. When you are worried or angry, your body makes a "stress chemical". Running, dancing or even a quick walk can burn it off. That’s why many teachers ask students to move around after a long class.
How much exercise do teenagers need? Doctors advise at least sixty minutes a day. You don’t have to do it all at once — ten minutes in the morning, twenty at noon and thirty after school also works. Choose something you enjoy, and your body and brain will both say thank you.
58.What did the scientists find in their study?
A. Students who exercise do better in exams.
B. Most students refuse to exercise.
C. Exercise takes too much time.
D. Maths is harder than English.
59.Why does exercise help the brain according to the passage?
A. It sends more blood and oxygen to the brain.
B. It makes students feel sleepy.
C. It helps students remember more words.
D. It makes the body strong and tall.
60.What does the underlined phrase “burn it off” probably mean?
A. Get rid of it.
B. Write it down.
C. Keep it in mind.
D. Learn it by heart.
61.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Students should exercise for an hour without a break.
B. Doing exercise in short times also works.
C. Only running is good for the brain.
D. Homework is bad for students’ health.
D
In 1975, a young Chinese climber named Xia Boyu gave his sleeping bag to a sick teammate on Mount Qomolangma. As a result, his own feet got badly frostbitten and were taken away. He was only 26 then. Many people thought his climbing dream was over, but Xia didn’t think so.
For the next forty years, Xia climbed with a pair of artificial legs. It was much harder than walking with real feet — the legs hurt him, and he fell many times. He tried to reach the top of the mountain again and again, in 2008, 2014 and 2015, but storms and other problems stopped him every time.
In 2018, at the age of 69 — blind in both eyes and fighting cancer — Xia finally stood on the top of Mount Qomolangma. Forty-three years after his first try, he became the first climber with artificial legs to reach the world’s highest point from the Nepal side.
“Some people ask me why I don’t stop,” Xia said. “I tell them: the mountain is my dream. As long as you have a dream, you should keep fighting for it, no matter how old you are.” Today, his story moves millions of people around the world and tells us a simple truth: a strong will knows no limits.
62.Why did Xia Boyu lose his feet in 1975?
A. He gave his sleeping bag to a sick teammate.
B. He fell down from a high rock.
C. A storm hit his tent at night.

A. c-b-d-a
B. b-d-c-a
C. b-c-d-a
D. d-b-a-c
64.What do we know about Xia Boyu from Paragraph 3?
A. He reached the top at the age of 26.
B. He gave up after the 2015 storm.
C. He was 69 years old when he succeeded.
D. He could see nothing after 2015.
65.What is the best title for the passage?

Su Bingtian was born in a small town in Guangdong in 1989. As a child, he was much shorter than his classmates, but he loved running more than anything else. His dream was to run in the Olympics one day.
The road to success was not easy. In 2014, Su decided to change the way he started running. It was a risky decision — he had to learn everything again, like a beginner. Some people laughed at him and said he was too old for a sprinter. But he believed in himself and kept training.
His hard work paid off. In 2015, he became the first Asian-born sprinter to run 100 metres in under 10 seconds. Six years later, at the Tokyo Olympics, the 32-year-old runner surprised the world with 9.83 seconds and broke the Asian record.
Su once said, “My dream was like a kite. Sometimes the wind stopped, but I never let go of the string.” Now he teaches at a university and trains young runners. He often tells them, “Run your own race. Don’t compare yourself with others. The most important thing is to be better than you were yesterday.”

One possible version:
When things get hard, giving up seems easy. But I have learned the power of not giving up.
Last year, I was weak in maths and often failed the exams. I felt so sad that I wanted to give it up. My maths teacher noticed my problem and encouraged me to keep trying. She helped me make a study plan, and I spent half an hour doing maths exercises every day. Whenever I met a difficult problem, I asked my classmates or the teacher for help instead of running away. Little by little, my maths got better, and I even got an A in the final exam.
Now I understand that difficulties are like mountains. As long as we keep climbing, we will reach the top one day. Never give up, and success will come to us.
