B

After an exam, the students at Brookside School put notes about their worries into a box. Members of the school help team wanted to be useful. They quickly wrote answers such as “Work harder” or “Be more confident”. A week later, however, several students put the same problems into the box again.

“Perhaps we have answered before understanding,” said their teacher. She asked the team to listen first. Their first task was to reflect what they heard: “So you feel worried because you do not know where to begin. Is that right?” This gave the speaker a chance to correct a misunderstanding.

Samuel once wrote, “I never have enough time.” At first, the team planned to tell him to study for longer. Instead, they asked him to keep a record of one evening. He discovered that he spent forty minutes looking for books, messages and unfinished work. They then made a checklist(清单). Simply adding another hour of study would not have solved that problem.

The team also changed the way they offered ideas. They asked, “What have you tried?” and “Which small step would you like to try next?” Then they checked a week later to see whether it helped. They no longer promised to solve everything. For problems beyond their ability, they helped students find a trusted adult.

Good advice, the team learnt, does not begin with a ready-made answer. It begins with finding out what the other person really needs.

12. Why did some students put the same problems into the box again?

A. The answers did not meet their real needs. B. They wanted help with their homework.

C. The teacher refused to read their notes. D. They had received no answers at all.

13. The underlined word “reflect” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. give an answer as quickly as possible B. tell the speaker that the idea is wrong

C. express the speaker’s meaning in your words D. repeat advice written in a textbook

14. What does Samuel’s example mainly show?

A. Everyone needs another hour of study. B. Advice should fit the actual problem.

C. Keeping a record wastes study time. D. The team should make everyone’s decisions.

15. A student says, “I always argue with my parents.” Which reply best follows the team’s new approach?

A. “Just stop arguing. It is that simple.” B. “Your parents must be wrong.”

C. “Everyone has this problem. Forget it.” D. “What happens, and what have you tried?”page number 2
