And it can be easily broken down into areas, with northwest, northeast, east, southeast and southwest regions to explore. Walking around the coast of Cornwall will leave anyone energetic.

Have you wondered how long would the trip from Amsterdam to Shanghai take by bike ? Ole Bouman, a Dutch-German historian, writer and photographer and now a professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, has the answer — 156 days.

This journey wasn’t a whim. It was a long-held idea that became increasingly clear and defined as Bouman started making physical, mental, and financial preparations, “I’ve had the strong curiosity to learn more about the East since the 1990s. As a cultural historian, I would like to know more about the relationship and interconnection between the East and the West,” said Bourman.

Setting off from Amsterdam, Bouman faced unexpected challenges and deep thinking. Every day, he rode toward different destinations. A 45-kilogram bag and an 18-kilogram bike were all that carried him on the 10,756-kilometer journey through 18 countries and regions with 16 different languages, as well as more than 500 historical sites. Along the way, he crossed about 300 rivers, climbed over 100 mountains, and tried to find a road that was not so smooth to gain new experiences, mapping an adventure filled with discoveries about people, cultures, stories, understanding, and connection.

Cycling from the West to the East and recording thousands of memorable moments, Bouman became more certain that his journey was more about the common ground we shared — the peace — rather than the differences. “From the West to the East, there are big changes in cultures, landscapes, literature, etc. But while pursuing (追求) changes and interacting with ordinary people, I become aware that people are pursuing a similar kind of normal life and personal happiness.”

Bouman has lived in China for around 10 years since he cycled to Shanghai and has been attracted by the whole history behind the new world. Now he is the founding director of the Design Society, a cultural exchange platform, whose goal is to push the young generation to kick off their own journey and encourage them to get close to the truth and reality by making physical efforts.

4. What does the underlined word “whim” in paragraph 2 mean?

A. A sudden wish.     B. A strong desire.

C. A long-held idea.    D. A challenging trip.

5. Why is the data mentioned in paragraph 3?

A. To show Bouman’s smooth experiences.

B. To show different destinations in the world.

C. To show the difficulties along the journey.

D. To show Bouman’s unexpected ways of thinking.

6. Which of the following can best describe Bouman?

A. Honest and brave.     B. Generous and humorous.

C. Creative and imaginative.    D. Curious and adventurous.

7. What is the goal of the Design Society?

A. To tell the story of Bouman’s journey.page number 1

Growing up with movies such as “High School Musical” and “Grease”, which presented the ideal (理想的) high school friendships, we sometimes expect a perfect relationship. Indeed, some high school friendships can be real and simple; while still some high school students will meet a friend who causes trouble. With failed friendships come lessons and experiences learned for the future. You will know the influence after you leave high school.

“I was always worried about what my friends thought about me. Sometimes my friends would make fun of what I wore or what I would do. I always tried to get along well with them, but I realized how happy I was once I stopped contacting them after high school,” said Elisha, Class of 2020.

Most teens have not realized the big question when dealing with high school problems. In five years, will this still matter? It is hard looking at the big picture when the problems are in front of you, which is understandable. However, most teens need a moment to reflect (反思) and question if the problem matters in a long time.

Briana, a high school teacher, said, “Now, I am in contact with two high school friends. I think the friendship experiences I had in high school shaped who I am because I learned to be open-minded and befriend all kinds of people. I learned to see people for who they are, not what they wear or who they play with. I learned most of all how to be a good friend.”

High school is a small part of your life, but it has a huge influence on who you will become and where you will go. Friendships and relationships help shape who you are, whether they are good or bad. Lessons are brought, and lessons are learned.

8. Why did the author use the two movies in the first paragraph?

A. To show the importance of high school friendship.

B. To explain what a high school friendship is.

C. To recommend these two movies to readers.

D. To introduce the topic of the passage.

9. What did Elisha think of her “friends”?

A. They were always worried about her.   B. They cared about her behavior.

C. They got along well with her.     D. They made her feel upset.

10. Why did Briana think her friendship experiences influence her?

A. She learned to make different friends.   B. She learned to play with her friends.

C. She learned to shape her friends’ minds.   D. She learned to wear just like her friends.

11. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. Failed friendships made teens worried.

B. High school friendships help to influence teens.

C. Good friendships greatly influenced teens.

D. Friendships are difficult for teens to deal with.page number 2
