Speaker: There are four main tools and materials of calligraphy: paper, inkstick, inkstone and brush. Paper is one of the most important inventions in ancient China. After all, it gives calligraphers a good surface to write on. Another tool that is important to calligraphers is an inkstick. This is a piece of hard ink. Calligraphers use this stick along with an inkstone to create ink. To make the ink, they pour a little water onto the inkstone. Then they carefully press the inkstick against the stone, moving it around in small circles.
The final tool is the brush. It allows artists to use ink to create beautiful works.
Together, these tools are known as the “four treasures of the study”. In ancient China, you couldn’t practise calligraphy unless you had them all.
