The works of famous writers in history have touched readers around the world for generations. It turns out that these great writers have more in common with you than you might think.
Do you keep a diary to record your daily experiences and thoughts? Many great writers built their success on the small moments of everyday life. 5.____________ These trips aroused her love of animals and shaped her career as a children’s writer. Have you ever walked around with your hands in your pockets just to look “cool”? Have you ever imagined being “the chosen one”—someone with a secret plan, hidden pain, or thoughts beyond one’s age? If so, you are not alone!
Looking back on my middle school days, I still remember how silly I was. I wanted people to notice me, but I also acted as if I didn’t care. I walked around in my oversized T-shirts and baggy jeans because I thought they made me look cooler. I didn’t want to do anything “mainstream” just to show I was different from others. For example, if everyone liked a song, I’d say proudly, “I am the only one who dislikes it!”
This kind of teen behaviour is quite common. Many teenagers around 13 or 14 start believing that being “normal” is too boring. They want to be different from everyone else. What’s more, they want to be the centre of attention, and they often care a lot about how others think of them.
Yes, I find my 14-year-old self funny. But as a father now, I understand how painful it can be to become a teenager. You are no longer a kid, but not an adult, either. You feel unsure, but you also want to look confident. Although your behaviour can seem silly, it is just a natural part of growing up—a time when you explore who you are and who you want to be.
So, next time you look back and feel a bit silly about your past behaviour, don’t be too hard on yourself. There is nothing wrong with you! It is just part of growing up.
13. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By offering advice. B. By asking questions.
C. By comparing facts. D. By sharing experiences.
14. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “mainstream” in Paragraph 2?
A. Usual. B. Cool. C. Different. D. Strange.
15. What are many teenagers likely to do according to Paragraph 3?
A. Copy others’ behaviour. B. Understand others’ pains.
C. Dislike others’ attention. D. Care about others’ thoughts.
16. Which of the following opinions does the writer agree with?
A. Teenagers shouldn’t look back on the past.
B. Teenagers shouldn’t be different from others.
C. It’s easy for teenagers to understand themselves.
D. It’s part of growing up for teenagers to behave in a silly way.

I wanted to go and look at a place in the middle of the island that I had found when I was exploring. We started and soon got to it, because the island was only three miles long and a quarter of a mile wide.
This place was a hill about forty feet high. We had a hard time getting to the top. The sides were so steep and the trees were so thick. We walked and climbed around all over it, and found a big hole in the rock. It was a good place to play our game. The hole was as big as two or three rooms, and Jim could stand up straight in it. It was cool there. Jim wanted to put our things there, but I said we didn’t want to be climbing up and down there all the time.
Jim said if we had the boat hidden in a good place and put all the things in the hole, we could rush there when anybody was to come to the island. They would never find us without dogs. Besides, he said that little birds had said it was going to rain. We didn’t want the things to get wet.
So we went back and got the boat, and pulled all the things up there. Then we found a place close by to hide the boat in, among the thick willows. We took some fish off the lines and set them again, and began to get ready for dinner.
The door of the hole was big enough to roll a hogshead (大桶) in, and there was also a good place to build a fire. So we built a fire and cooked dinner. We spread the blankets inside, and ate our dinner. We put all the other things at the back of the hole.
Pretty soon it darkened and began to thunder. Directly it began to rain, and I never saw the wind blow so heavily. It was one of these regular summer storms. It would get so dark that it looked all blue-black outside.
“Jim, this is nice,” I said. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here. Pass me another piece of fish and some hot bread.”
“Well, if it weren’t for Jim, you wouldn’t stay here. You would stay in the woods, without food, and you would get half-dead from the shower. That’s true, dear. The chickens know when it rains, and so do the birds. I know.”
(Adapted from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)

C. Leaving the lonely island. D. Stopping others reaching the island

Francie Nolan grew up in a poor family in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents could hardly make enough money to support the whole family. The house they lived in was small and damp (潮湿的), and life was always difficult. Even so, Francie loved reading more than anything else in the world. After finishing all the tiring housework every day, she rushed to the nearby library to borrow books. Novels, history books and poems all brought her warmth and hope.
At first, her family could not understand her crazy hobby. They thought reading was a waste of time and useless for a poor girl like her. They hoped she could find a part-time job to make money. They even asked her many times to give up reading completely. However, Francie never lost her strong love for books. Every night, she sat beside the window and read quietly by the weak candlelight late at night.
Francie had a clear dream. She wanted to become a great writer in the future. To make her dream come true, she made a strict plan. She practiced writing short stories for several hours every weekend. She would carefully think over her plots and polish her sentences before finishing each piece. She spent lots of time correcting her mistakes and learning writing skills from the books she read. Most of her articles were refused by magazines, but she never chose to give up. Instead, she treated failures as valuable lessons and kept improving herself.
Many years passed. Francie wrote down her story talking about her hard but special childhood. Later, her story moved many readers who read it and soon became popular all over the country. Lots of reporters came to interview her about her secret of success. With a big smile, Francie told them, “Effort and courage mean nothing without persistence (坚持不懈). Growing into a Better Self
Growing up is like walking up steps — each step brings me closer to a better self.
I am a careful and hard-working student. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to music to relax myself. But since I entered Grade 9, I have met a big challenge. I often stay up late to finish piles of homework. Lack of sleep makes me sleepy in class and it is also harmful to my health.
I decide to face this problem bravely. I will try to improve my study efficiency at school and make a clear daily plan. I will stop putting off my tasks and go to bed on time. I hope I can keep energetic every day and make progress in a healthy way. I believe I am on the way to becoming a better self.
