The bell rang. I picked up my backpack and headed for Writing Club.
“Today, we’ll share stories with critique partners,” said Miss Lisa.
My partner, Penny, sat across from me. We shared our stories nervously. While I had no trouble coming up with ideas, I did have problems with spelling. And grammar. And punctuation.
I read her story without stopping. It was about a homeless dog named Sunny who saved a family during a storm. Finally, the family welcomed Sunny.
“Wow, excellent story! I really love it!” I said.
“Yours too.” But she did not even look at me as she passed mine back.
When the club ended, Penny jumped up and picked up her backpack. Everything fell out. I noticed a book named Sunny the Brave. The description matched Penny’s story exactly. She had copied it! I thought about telling Miss Lisa, but she had already left.
Outside of the school, I found Penny on a bench. “You dropped this,” I held out the book. She looked up, tears in her eyes. Suddenly, I wasn’t angry any more. My job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not make her feel bad. But what could I say?
After getting home, I decided to ask mom what I should do. I found her in the kitchen making dinner with dad. Dad cut vegetables into perfect shapes. Mom mixed a sauce on the stove.
“Aidan, you’re just in time,” Mom said and held out a spoonful of sauce. “Taste this.”
“It’s good, but I think ...”
“It needs something, right?” she said. “I agree.”
“Here’s a measuring spoon,” Dad said, “so you can make sure to use the right amount.”
“I have an idea!” Mom added a teaspoon of a new spice into the sauce. “Now what did you want to talk about?”
I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. With Dad’s attention to detail and Mom’s sense of adventure, their dinners became delicious.
“I think you already helped me,” I told her.
At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker.
“I thought I would love writing, but I’m terrible at it,” she said. “I never have a single idea.”
“Well. I have ideas, but my sentences aren’t always the best. I wish I could write like you do.”
“I’d rather have ideas than write perfect sentences.”
“I had a new idea. I bet we could come up with something great! Let’s talk to Miss Lisa ...”
31. Which role should “critique partners” play in the writing club?
A. Competing to see who does better. B. Avoiding giving advice to the other.
C. Supporting each other to improve. D. Working on pointing out mistakes.
32. How did I feel after talking with Penny at the locker?
A. Hopeful. B. Surprised. C. Peaceful. D. Ashamed.
33. What can we infer from the passage about Aidan and Penny?
A. Aidan will be the big mouth to tell Miss Lisa.
B. Neither of them will be in the soup about the task.
C. Penny is the best word master in the class.
D. Both of them regret having lied to Miss Lisa.
D
When a robin (a kind of bird) sees itself in a window or mirror, it seems to think the reflection (映像) is another robin. The bird may hit the glass, trying to drive the other bird away.
In the 1970s, Dr. Gordon Gallup had an idea. He thought more intelligent (智力的) types of animals might know that their reflections show themselves. To find out, he created an experiment called the mirror test. If an animal passes the test, scientists say that it has “self-awareness”. In Dr. Gallup’s experiments, chimpanzees (黑猩猩) passed, but monkeys failed.
So far, only eight have passed, including humans. Four of them are in the chimpanzee family. Magpies (喜鹊), dolphins, and elephants also passed.
The mirror test has four stages.
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 4
React to the “intruder”.
The animal reacts to the reflection as if it is another animal of its own type. For example, it may attack its reflection. Most animals do not get past it.
______
A cat may hold up its paw. Other animals shake their heads or try to look behind the mirror.
Recognize yourself.
The animal seems to know that it’s looking at itself. It tries to see parts of itself that it can’t see without a mirror.
Notice what doesn’t belong.
The animal notices a harmless mark on itself and reacts to it.
In studies with children, a research group put stickers on the foreheads of children who just learned how to walk when they weren’t paying attention. By the age of two, most could notice the sticker in a mirror and take it off.
In Dr. Reiss’s dolphin study, the researchers put marks on two dolphins’ heads. Both dolphins noticed the mark in a mirror. One of them swam to the side of the pool and tried to rub the mark off. A mark placed on elephants’ heads gave similar results.
“Animals that pass the mirror test have a lot in common,” Dr. Reiss says. “They all have large, complicated brains compared to their body size. They all live in social groups and work with each other. They care about others.” The mirror test can’t make us know about every animal’s intelligence. (Dogs might be self-aware, but they use their noses much more than their eyes.)
Dr. Reiss says self-awareness is only one form of intelligence. “Many highly social animals communicate in their own ways. It isn’t about who is more intelligent. It is about what kind of intelligence they show.”
34. What is the writing purpose of the passage?
A. To remind people to care about animals. B. To introduce the advantages of “the mirror test”.
C. To present some facts of “the mirror test”. D. To encourage people to do research on animals.
35. Which of the following shows the animal has “self-awareness” according to the mirror test?
A. The elephant takes the mark on its head off. B. The bird drives its reflection away.
C. The monkey takes the mark on its head off. D. The dolphin drives its reflection away.
36. Which words are the most suitable for ______?
A. Search for the Mark. B. Explore the Mark. C. Search for the Mirror. D. Explore the Mirror.
37. The following sentence can best be put at the beginning of ______.
Since then, researchers have given the test to many kinds of animals.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 7 D. Paragraph 8

七、阅读短文 (本大题共10分,每题2分)
阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过6个单词。
I was walking down the street in Beijing the other day and passed a couple sitting on a bench. “She must be 180 centimeters tall,” I heard the woman say to the man. I turned to look at them straight in the eye at once. I felt angry that they were talking about me and staring (凝视). The woman suddenly said, “Oh, she must understand Chinese.” “Yes, I do,” I replied. Then, they both smiled and laughed, and so did I.
This was yet another time in China when strangers stared or talked about my appearance. It’s either because of my unusually tall height as a woman or because I am a foreigner. This makes me feel quite uncomfortable. I just want to fit in. I usually just try to ignore (忽视) such people, but this time, as soon as I talked to the couple, they went from judgmental (爱评头论足的) strangers to people I just shared a warm and funny moment with.
It reminded me how important it is to have the right attitude (态度) and to be understanding. There aren’t that many foreigners in China, so it’s only natural that Chinese people will feel curious about foreigners and how they look different. Although, when people stare at you it feels a bit hostile (充满敌意的), most people are simply curious and may even want to chat with you.
In short, I can’t change this situation. The only thing I can change is my attitude toward it. Life is too short to be influenced by the little things. We need to enjoy each moment with an open attitude!
58. What does the writer look like?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
59. What language did the couple speak?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
60. How did the writer feel when being talked about and stared at?

61. Why do Chinese people feel curious about foreigners?

62. What do you think of the writer?

Dear Teachers,
I’m writing to recommend myself as a designer for the “Shanshui Home” Project. I’m Li Ming from Class 1, Grade 9. I am a tall and energetic boy. My animal sign is the Tiger, which means I am brave enough to face challenges.
Besides, I am very creative. I often come up with new ideas for our class activities. I am also an organized person who always keeps things in good order. As for the design, I plan to use green and blue. Green represents nature and energy, which can make our school look more beautiful. Blue is a calm color that can bring peace to our minds.
I would be thankful if you could give me the chance.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
