Thanks to technology, the way we communicate with others has greatly changed. How do you feel about it? Would you prefer to live in a world with or without mobile phones?
I ordered some snacks on my phone the other afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So prompt! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example (拿邮递举个例子). Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mum was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mum would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s, there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could check the board later and see what you wrote to them!
4. What does the underlined word “prompt” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Wise. B. Polite. C. Quick. D. Helpful.
5. How did the writer’s mum keep in touch with her pen pal?
A. By talking on phones. B. By mailing letters.
C. By visiting every few months. D. By writing diaries.
6. Where could people leave messages at some airports in the 1970s?
A. On the message boards. B. At the information desk.
C. On the door of the exit. D. On the boarding gate of the plane.
7. What is the story mainly about?
A. How fast it is to buy things nowadays. B. How people kept in touch before.
C. The importance of communication. D. Ways of making friends in the past.
C
Uncle Zhou has been a postman in Long Valley for thirty years. Every morning at six, he puts on his green bag and sets off on his old motorbike. The road winds through two mountains and a river, and it takes him nearly four hours to finish one round.
I grew up in Long Valley. When I was nine, I loved stories, but there was no bookshop in our village, and the school had only a few old books. One rainy afternoon, Uncle Zhou knocked on our door. “A parcel for you,” he said, and handed me a bag. Inside were two storybooks. Later, my mother told me that Uncle Zhou had bought them with his own money after he knew I had nothing to read.
From then on, a new parcel came almost every month—books about animals, about the sea, and about people who made a difference. Uncle Zhou never said much. Once I asked him why he did this. He just smiled. “A letter brings news,” he said, “but a book brings a road.”
Last year, I left Long Valley to study in the city. On the day I left, Uncle Zhou was at the bus stop as usual, his green bag on his shoulder. He handed me a book and said, “Read it when you miss home.”
That book still sits on my desk. Uncle Zhou may never be famous, but he has delivered more than letters. He has delivered hope to a small valley—one parcel at a time.
8. Which of the following is the correct order of the events?
① The writer received two storybooks on a rainy afternoon.
② Uncle Zhou became a postman in Long Valley.
③ The writer left Long Valley for the city.
④ The writer asked Uncle Zhou why he sent the books.
A. ②→①→④→③ B. ②→④→①→③
C. ①→②→④→③ D. ④→②→①→③
9. Why did Uncle Zhou buy books for the writer?
A. Because the writer’s mother asked him to.
B. Because he wanted to sell them in the village.
C. Because the school gave him the money.
D. Because he heard the writer had nothing to read.
10. What does the underlined word “He” refer to?
A. The writer. B. Uncle Zhou. C. A bus driver. D. A villager.
11. What is Uncle Zhou like according to the passage?
A. Quiet but wise. B. Strict and serious. C. Funny and outgoing. D. Rich and proud.
D
①Have you ever had someone believe in you when you did not believe in yourself? That is the power of inspiration. When we inspire others, we do not just help them—we also grow as people.
②Inspiring others is very meaningful. For example, when you encourage a classmate feeling down, you learn to be patient and kind. Also, watching someone you have encouraged achieve their dreams is a wonderful feeling. When you give your time and energy out of kindness, you feel proud of yourself because you realize you are making a positive difference in the world.
③Inspiration gives people a sense of purpose and hope. It makes them feel like they are part of something bigger than just living day to day. When people feel inspired, they become more confident and ready to do meaningful work. A student with inspiration may put more effort into learning. In a team or business, inspiration can lead to better results and stronger teamwork.
④Inspiration helps leaders build strong relationships and learn more about themselves. Great leaders inspire others by sharing their values and future plans. When you inspire people, you create trust. Team members start believing in each other’s abilities. This trust builds good relationships. Some people might not have become friends without your leadership. At the same time, inspiring others helps you discover your own strengths, weaknesses, and values. You also learn how well you communicate. If people do not listen to you, you can improve your way of leading.
⑤You do not need to be famous to inspire people. Start by being a good example. Listen more than you talk. Show real care for others. Give people a clear goal and direction. And remember—true inspiration comes from focusing on others, not yourself. When you inspire someone, you give them hope. And hope can change everything.
12. Why does inspiring others make us feel good?
A. We can bring good changes to the world.
B. We will never feel weak or upset in daily life.
C. We can get more energy from different teams.
D. We can easily become great leaders in a group.
13. According to paragraph 3, what may an inspired student do?
A. Make more friends. B. Join more clubs.
C. Study harder than before. D. Change personal values.
14. How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. By showing differences between two ideas.
B. By sharing the writer’s own experiences.
C. By using specific examples to explain.
D. By presenting a set of numbers.
15. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

A. B. C. D.
