Unusual Places to Stay
Why should adventure end when you sleep? Here are four unusual places to make unforgettable memories.
A Treehouse in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica’s green rainforest, a treehouse hotel lets you sleep high among trees — perfect for nature lovers. But reaching it is part of the adventure, as it needs a long, sometimes hard forest walk.
An Underground Hotel in Wales
In North Wales, an old, forgotten slate mine (板岩矿) has become the world’s deepest underground hotel. Lying 1,300 feet below ground, it offers a unique experience. Stay in simple but comfortable rooms, with only the quiet drip of water, making you feel far from the surface.
A Floating Hotel in Sweden
Sweden’s Salt & Sill has a floating hotel in a calm valley, where rooms move gently with the water. Next to it is a famous restaurant serving herring (鲱鱼) in many ways. After a good dinner, you can go back to your floating room. You can even climb a ladder (楼梯) from your room for a swim.
A Campsite on Spanish Islands
Near Spain’s coast, Islas Cies feels like a storybook’s deserted island — no cars, few buildings. Overnight stays need a special summer-only campsite, and in return, you get clean, empty beaches, clear blue water for diving, and peaceful paths through green pine forests.
1. What might be a challenge for the visitors to the treehouse hotel?
A. The high price. B. A long walk. C. The bad weather. D. A small bed.
2. What do the Floating Hotel and Islas Cies Campsite have in common?

Leo, a high school student, often walked past the “Golden Years” community center on his way home. He noticed that the community center provided a place for elderly residents (居民) to gather, but many of them suffered from loneliness. Most sat silently for hours, with few chances to talk and share their life experiences with younger people. An idea flashed in his mind: What if the generations could bridge their gap through stories?
He started a project called “Story Swap”. The concept was simple. Once a week, Leo and a few friends would visit the community center. They wouldn’t just perform or serve tea; they would sit down, one-on-one, with an elderly resident and simply ask, “Would you tell me a story from your life?”
At first, many seniors were hesitant (犹豫的) to open up. But Leo and his friends showed true care and patience, so more seniors agreed gradually. Stories began to flow. Mr. Chen, a former engineer, talked about building the city’s first bridge. Mrs. Li, eyes bright, told her youthful adventures as a village teacher. The students listened carefully, totally attracted by these special experiences.
In return, the teenagers shared their own world. They explained how smartphones work, showed pictures of their school life, and talked about their dreams and anxieties. It was a reciprocal exchange. The students learned history and wisdom (智慧) not found in textbooks, gaining a profound (深切的) respect for the older generation. The elderly residents felt seen, heard, and connected to the active life of modern society. They were no longer just silent people in a room; they were storytellers, teachers, and friends. The “Story Swap” project didn’t just fill the silence in the community center; it satisfied people’s deep need for real communication across ages.
4. Why did Leo start the “Story Swap” project?
A. He needed to learn about history.
B. He noticed the elderly were lonely.
C. He wanted to teach the elderly new things.
D. He was responsible for looking after the elderly.
5. How was the project carried out?
A. By sharing life stories one-on-one.
B. By writing letters to each other.
C. By giving performances to the elderly.
D. By doing housework for the elderly.
6. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The old people refused to listen to the teenagers’ stories.
B. Mr Chen worked as a village teacher when he was young.
C. All the old people wanted to share their stories at the very beginning.
D. Leo and his friends’ patience and care made more seniors open up gradually.
7. What message does the author want to tell?
A. Community centers need government support.
B. Teenagers should learn history from the elderly.
C. Communication helps bridge the generation gap.
D. Technology is the best way to connect generations.
C
Crows (乌鸦) are very smart birds. They can count, tell human faces, and even use tools. Recently, a popular story said that a Swedish town was training crows to pick up cigarette butts (烟头). While this project isn’t actually happening now, the idea is based on real science.
In 2022, a researcher named Hans Christian Hanssen proposed “Corvid Cleaning” in Sweden. The plan was to train wild crows to collect cigarette rubbish and drop it into special bins (垃圾箱). In return, the bins would give the birds food as a reward (回报). The idea drew international attention, and some experts even praised its possibilities to cut down litter in the city. However, the business behind the project failed in 2025. Despite this, false (虚假的) news about the program continues to spread online.
Why did the project fail? A 2024 study pointed out some serious worries. Researchers worried about the health risks to the crows and whether the public would accept animals cleaning up human waste. Besides this, the business itself was short of money. This wasn’t the first try either. A French theme park tried something similar in 2018 with mixed results. In the end, the question isn’t just whether we can train crows to clean, but should we?
But the story also draws attention to a huge environmental problem. Cigarette butts are the world’s most common litter. Humans throw away around 4.5 trillion filters (过滤嘴) every year, and that number could soon double. These filters take years to break down and give off harmful chemicals into soil and waterways, harming both wildlife and the environment.
While using clever crows as cleaners creates an eye-catching headline (头条新闻), the real lesson is about human responsibility. Instead of depending on animals to solve our problems, we need to deal with cigarette pollution at its source through better waste management and a change of smoking rules. Crows are very smart, but protecting the planet is our job, not theirs.
8. What was the main purpose of the “Corvid Cleaning” project?
A. To protect the crows.
B. To train crows to clear cigarette waste.
C. To study crows’ cleverness.
D. To test some special trash bins in Sweden.
9. What problem did researchers raise about the crow-cleaning project?
A. The crows were not smart enough.
B. The special bins cost too much to build.
C. It could harm the crows and annoy the public.
D. The French project had already failed completely.
10. What does the text say about cigarette butts in the environment?
A. They are a problem only in European countries.
B. They are easy to collect and disappear in weeks.
C. They give off harmful chemicals as they slowly break down.
D. They are the most common litter but are harmless to animals.
11. What does the author want to tell in the last paragraph?
A. Crows are too smart for cleaning tasks.
B. Theme parks should stop using wild animals.
C. We should not believe false stories about animals.
D. We humans should take responsibility for pollution.
D
How would you go without your smartphone? For many of us, our smartphone is the first and last thing we look at every day. We depend on it to perform a number of tasks and connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones?
Certainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone, American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people quit scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can’t break the habit. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we feel regret for “checking our phone again and again if we’re waiting for a text or getting really into social media then kind of, looking up and realizing that an hour has passed.”
But does it matter if we make the most of this technology? Possibly, because like medicine, the problem appears when it is withdrawn. A study from King’s College London found young people couldn’t control the amount of time they spend on their phone. Such behaviour means that people become “anxious” or “upset” if they are not allowed to be on the phone continuously, which can cause anxiety and mental health problems.
Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics suggests we don’t just look at our phones when we receive text or email messages. The people they studied felt an automatic (自动的) need to check their phone, just as a smoker would light a cigarette. One solution could be an app that rewards (奖励) students for time spent away from their phones. Another choice is changing your smartphone to a dumbphone that has none of the things that turn your attention away. But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!
12. What is Martin Cooper’s attitude to focusing on smartphones?
A. Uncaring. B. Supportive. C. Disapproving. D. Unclear.
13. What does the underlined word “withdrawn” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Saved. B. Increased. C. Offered. D. Stopped.
14. What is the author’s key suggestion in the last paragraph?
A. Contact the real world. B. Concentrate on studies.
C. Buy a new smartphone. D. Get a reward for offline time.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Benefits from Smartphones B. Addiction to Smartphones
C. Development of Smartphones D. Disadvantages of Smartphones

Last summer, I joined a two-week long art camp. At first, I was nervous as I didn’t know anyone there. Among the students, there was a girl named Maya. She was always surrounded by a group of friends, chatting and laughing loudly. I was too shy to approach her.
One day during a painting class, I was struggling with my brushwork. Maya happened to pass by and noticed my trouble. She pulled up a chair beside me and patiently showed me some painting techniques. Her kind smile and warm words made me feel at ease immediately. From then on, we became good friends. We spent every day at the camp together, sharing our dreams and secrets.
As the end of the art camp approached, everyone was busy preparing for the final exhibition. Maya and I decided to create a joint painting that combined our different styles. However, just two days before the exhibition, a huge argument broke out between us. We had different ideas about how to complete the painting and neither of us was willing to compromise (妥协). We ended up storming off in anger, leaving the half-finished painting on the painting stand.
That night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning (辗转反侧). I kept thinking about our friendship and how stupid our argument was. I realized that friendship was more important than winning an argument.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】文章介绍瑞典“乌鸦清理计划”的构想、失败原因,指出烟头污染危害,呼吁人类主动承担治理污染的责任。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The plan was to train wild crows to collect cigarette rubbish and drop it into special bins (垃圾箱).(这个计划是训练野生乌鸦收集香烟垃圾,并把它们丢进专用垃圾箱)”可知,“乌鸦清理计划”项目的主要目的是训练乌鸦清理香烟垃圾。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Researchers worried about the health risks to the crows and whether the public would accept animals cleaning up human waste.(研究人员担心乌鸦面临的健康风险,以及公众是否会接受动物清理人类垃圾)”可知,研究人员提出的问题是该项目可能伤害乌鸦,并且惹恼公众。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“These filters take years to break down and give off harmful chemicals into soil and waterways, harming both wildlife and the environment.(这些过滤嘴需要数年时间分解,并向土壤和水道释放有害化学物质,危害野生动物和环境)”可知,烟头过滤嘴在缓慢分解时会释放有害化学物质。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“While using clever crows as cleaners creates an eye-catching headline (头条新闻), the real lesson is about human responsibility. Instead of depending on animals to solve our problems, we need to deal with cigarette pollution at its source through better waste management and a change of smoking rules. Crows are very smart, but protecting the planet is our job, not theirs.(利用聪明的乌鸦当清洁工能吸引眼球登上头条,但真正的启示关乎人类的责任。我们不应依靠动物解决我们的问题,而要通过更好的垃圾管理和修改吸烟规定,从源头处理香烟污染。乌鸦很聪明,但保护地球是我们的工作,不是它们的)”可知,作者想要告诉我们人类应当为污染承担责任。

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B
【解析】
【导语】文章探讨人们对智能手机的依赖与成瘾问题,引用相关人物观点和研究说明该现象的危害,并给出一些解决办法。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“In a BBC interview, he suggested people quit scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”.(在一次英国广播公司的采访中,他建议人们停止刷屏,“去好好生活”)” 可知,Martin Cooper不赞成人们过度沉迷手机。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Possibly, because like medicine, the problem appears when it is withdrawn. A study from King’s College London found young people couldn’t control the amount of time they spend on their phone. Such behaviour means that people become “anxious” or “upset” if they are not allowed to be on the phone continuously
根据最后一段中的“But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!(但也许最主要的是,我们只需要多抬头,重新和现实世界建立联系!)”可知,作者的核心建议是接触现实世界。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。第一段中“But have we become addicted to our phones?(但是我们已经对手机上瘾了吗?)”提出了文章的主题,下文对这一主题展开了描述,提出了人们对手机上瘾的症状和产生的问题,最后对此提出了建议。由此可知,“Addiction to Smartphones(智能手机成瘾)”适合作本文标题。

First, make a proper revision plan, which will build up your confidence. Second, spare some time to relax and stay energetic. Finally, talk with your friends or parents, since sharing pressure can reduce anxiety.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The next morning, I decided to apologize to Maya. With a pounding heart, I walked towards the studio where she was. When I opened the door, I saw Maya sitting in front of our unfinished painting, looking sad. Her eyes were red as if she had been crying. Seeing me, she stood up nervously. Before she could say anything, I blurted out, “Maya, I’m so sorry about yesterday. Our friendship means everything to me, and I don’t want a silly argument to ruin it.”
Paragraph 2:
Tears filled Maya’s eyes as she rushed towards me and gave me a big hug. “I’m sorry too,” she sobbed. “I was just being stubborn. Our friendship is far more precious than any painting.” We both laughed through our tears. Then, side by side, we sat down and started working on the painting again. This time, we listened to each other’s ideas, compromised, and added our unique touches. When the exhibition opened, our painting received high praise. But more importantly, our friendship became even stronger, and we knew that true friendship could overcome any obstacle.
