① literature n. 文学；文学作品，不可数名词；be interested in literature 对文学感兴趣。

② novel n. 小说；a famous novel 一部著名小说；novelist n. 小说家。

③ poem n. 诗；poet n. 诗人；poetry n. 诗歌（总称）；write a poem 写一首诗。

④ character n. 角色；人物；the main character 主要人物；也可指“性格”。

⑤ hero n. 英雄；主人公；heroine n. 女主人公；the hero of the story 故事的主人公。

⑥ plot n. 情节；（小说的）布局；the plot of the story 故事情节。

⑦ theme n. 主题；the theme of the novel 小说的主题。

⑧ chapter n. 章；回；Chapter One 第一章。

⑨ imagination n. 想象力；imagine v. 想象；imagine doing sth. 想象做某事；形容词为 imaginative。

⑩ express v. 表达；express one's feelings 表达某人的感情；expression n. 表达；表情。

⑪ compare v. 比较；compare ... with ... 把……与……比较；compare ... to ... 把……比作……。

⑫ 定语从句（关系代词作主语）：关系代词 who / that 指代人，which / that 指代物，作主语时不可省略，如 the old man who fished alone。

⑬ 定语从句（关系副词作状语）：where 指地点，作状语，从句中不缺主语或宾语，如 the bank from where the skiff was hauled up。

⑭ 动名词作宾语：enjoy / finish / practice / mind / avoid / suggest / keep / imagine + doing；此处 doing 是名词性质，不是进行时。

⑮ be based on 以……为基础（被动结构）；be adapted from 由……改编；be worth doing 值得做某事（主动形式表被动意义）。

⑯ 时态提示：介绍作品情节与内容常用一般现在时，讲述已发生的往事可用一般过去时，注意前后一致。
