As junior high students, we often face difficult moments: a math test we fail, a speech we struggle with, or a sport we can’t master. How we think about these challenges is important—and that’s where “growth mindset” comes in.
A growth mindset means believing our abilities can get better, rather than being unchangeable all the time. People with a growth mindset usually focus on the process, effort and improvement not the result. This is different from a “fixed mindset” where people think “I’m bad at math” or “I’ll never be good at speaking”. With a growth mindset, you say, “I’m not good at this yet — but I can learn”.
Let’s take school life as an example. Suppose you get a low score on a science quiz. A fixed mindset makes you feel angry and hopeless: “I’m just not a science person”. But with a growth mindset, you look at your mistakes calmly. You ask the teacher for help, redo the wrong questions, study those topics more and even use the colour therapy. Next time, your score might be improved! It’s not about being perfect now — it’s about trying to get better step by step.
Growing this mindset isn’t hard. Above all, use the word “yet” often. Instead of “I can’t do this”, say “I can’t do this yet”. Also, when you face a setback, stay calm and don’t let your feelings like anger or sadness control you. Remember that mistakes are part of learning. Moreover, celebrate small progress. Cheer for your small steps forward after working out a difficult math problem.
Having a growth mindset helps us not just in school, but in life. It gives us courage to try new things when we fail. So let’s start thinking “I can grow” — and see how far we can go!
As teenagers, we often face difficult moments. Our 1 about hard situations matter a lot—and that’s exactly when “growth mindset” plays a role.
The meaning of a growth mindset
A growth mindset means thinking our skills can develop instead of being fixed forever. With a growth mindset, people pay more attention to how hard they try and how much they 2 instead of only caring about the result itself.
An 3 of a growth mindset
People with a growth mindset may face the mistakes in a 4 way. Go to the teacher, redo the wrong questions, study more and even try the colour therapy if he or she gets low marks in science exams.
The methods of having a growth mindset
●Use the word “yet” often. Say “I can’t do this yet” instead of “I can’t do this”.
●Stay calm and control your feelings when 5 a setback.
●Celebrate small progress, like 6 one hard math problem.
7. What can a growth mindset give us when we fail? (No more than 8 words)

1.文章第一段最后一句“How we think about these challenges is important”可推知结论,我们在困难处境中的想法很重要。
2.文章第二段第二句“People with a growth mindset usually focus on the process, effort and improvement not the result.” 此处需填入动词与how much they构成从句。
3.文章第三段第一句“Let’s take school life as an example.”
4.文章第三段第四句“But with a growth mindset, you look at your mistakes calmly.”
5.文章第四段第四句“Also, when you face a setback, stay calm ...”
6.文章第四段最后一句“Cheer for your small steps forward after working out a difficult math problem.”
7.文章第五段第二句“It gives us courage to try new things when we fail.” Courage to try new things.
Ask the teacher for help and redo the wrong questions.
Three years ago, a survey found that 68% of middle school students felt “afraid” or “nervous” when learning to code. Today, thanks to AI coding assistants like Codex, that number has dropped to 22%. What caused this dramatic change?
Traditional coding education required students to memorize exact syntax—the specific rules of a programming language. A missing comma or a capital letter in the wrong place would cause the entire program to fail. Many students gave up after their first few errors. “I felt stupid,” said Li Ming, a 14-year-old from Guangzhou. “I would spend an hour looking for a typo. It wasn’t teaching me how to solve problems. It was just teaching me to be frustrated.”
Codex changes this learning model entirely. Instead of typing code from memory, students describe what they want the program to do in everyday language. Codex then generates the code. The student’s job shifts from “getting the syntax right” to “checking if the code does what they intended.” This is a fundamental shift in the learning process.
Educational psychologist Dr. Liu Wei explains: “When students use Codex, they spend less time on mechanical details and more time on logical thinking. They ask questions like ‘Why did the program do that?’ and ‘How could I make it better?’ These are exactly the higher-order thinking skills we want to develop.”
However, not everyone is celebrating. Some educators worry that students will become dependent on AI and never learn to code on their own. Professor Zhang from Beijing University warns: “Codex is a tool, not a replacement for learning. Students still need to understand basic programming concepts. If they rely on Codex for everything, they will be lost when the AI makes a mistake or when they need to work without it.”
The solution, many experts agree, is a balanced approach. Schools should teach traditional coding fundamentals alongside AI-assisted coding. Students should learn to read and understand code, even if they don’t write every line from scratch. They should also learn to debug—find and fix errors—because even AI-generated code can have problems.
Several schools have already adopted this model. At Shanghai’s No. 2 Middle School, students spend 40% of their coding time working without AI assistance and 60% using Codex. Test results show that these students perform better on both AI-assisted and non-AI coding tests compared to students who use only one method.
The message is clear: AI is not the enemy of learning. When used wisely, it can be the best teacher a student ever had.
How AI Coding Assistants Are Changing Education
The Problem Before AI
Many students were 1 of coding because of strict syntax rules.
A small mistake like a missing comma would make the 2 program fail.
How Codex Helps
Students describe their goals in 3 language, and Codex writes the code.
The student’s job becomes checking the 4 instead of fixing syntax.
Benefits
Students focus more on 5 thinking and less on mechanical details.
Concerns
Some educators worry that students may become 6 on AI.
The Balanced Approach
Students should learn both traditional coding 7 and AI-assisted coding.
They must also learn to 8 code, because AI-generated code is not always perfect.
Your Opinion
Do you think AI coding assistants like Codex should be allowed in schools? Why or why not? (Write at least 20 words.)
9
【答案】1.afraid 2.entire 3.everyday 4.code 5.logical 6.dependent 7.fundamentals 8.debug 9.Yes, I think AI coding assistants should be allowed because they help students focus on solving problems instead of worrying about small mistakes. But schools should also teach traditional coding so students understand the basics.

1.根据文章第1段“68% of middle school students felt ‘afraid’ or ‘nervous’ when learning to code(68% 的中学生在学习编程时感到‘害怕’或‘紧张’)”以及表格中were … of的搭配可知,be afraid of为固定搭配,意为“害怕”。故填afraid。
2.根据文章第2段“A missing comma or a capital letter in the wrong place would cause the entire program to fail(缺少一个逗号或大写字母位置错误会导致整个程序失败)”可推知,小错误会使整个程序失败。故填entire。
3.根据文章第3段“students describe what they want the program to do in everyday language(学生用日常语言描述他们想要程序做什么)”可推知,学生用日常语言描述目标。故填everyday。
5.根据文章第4段“spend less time on mechanical details and more time on logical thinking(花更少时间在机械细节上,更多时间在逻辑思维上)”可推知,学生更专注于逻辑思维。故填logical。
8.根据文章第6段“They should also learn to debug—find and fix errors(他们也应该学习调试——发现并修复错误)”可推知,学生必须学习调试代码。故填debug。
Yes, I think AI coding assistants should be allowed in schools. They help students focus on logical thinking, but students must also learn basic coding fundamentals to avoid dependency.

Whales might have their own fashion trends, just like people. Recently whale watchers and researchers saw something last 1 in the 1980s — whales balancing a dead salmon on their heads like hats.
Last October, a photographer took a picture of a 33-year-old male whale called J27, also known as “Blackberry”, with a salmon on its head.
Blackberry is part of a group called the Southern Resident Killer Whales, which live off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Researcher Deborah Giles 2 saw another whale from the same group doing the same thing.
This 3 some scientists of 1987, when a female whale wore a salmon on her head.
Other whales in her group and nearby groups 4 her, making it a short-lived fashion. Within a year, the behavior disappeared.
Andrew Foote, a researcher at the University of Oslo, suggested that some whales which saw this behaviour in 1987 may be 5 . However, not all scientists 6 . Monika Wieland from the Whale Behavior Institute said that one 7 is not enough to prove this is a real fashion again.
Why do whales carry salmon on their heads? Scientists still don’t know. One idea is that when food is easy to find, whales keep a(n) 8 fish as a snack. Another thought is that the behavior could be a way to 9 attention from a mate (配偶) when they want a baby, or just a playful act. Modern technology, such as drones (无人机), may help researchers find out more by 10 whales and watching what they do with the fish.

根据第四段“some scientists of 1987, when a female whale wore a salmon on her head”可知,这种行为在1980年代曾被记录过。

根据第二段“Last October, a photographer took a picture of a 33-year-old male whale...”
根据“when food is easy to find”和“as a snack”可知,食物充足时,留一条“备用的”鱼当零食。
根据“Modern technology, such as drones”和“watching what they do”可知,无人机的作用是“追踪”鲸鱼以观察它们的行为。

①Many of us admire people who achieve great things through hard work. But what exactly makes them keep going when others quit?
②The short answer is “grit”. But building grit is, in fact, very hard because we live in a world of instant (瞬间) results. So we often give up easily when progress is slow, telling ourselves we are not talented, or finding excuses for our laziness. It is self-protective, according to psychologist Angela Duckworth. “Most of us want to see quick success,” she says, “so when we don’t get it, it hurts our confidence.”
③Luckily, there is research to suggest that some methods can help us build grit. One of them is to celebrate small wins. Instead of waiting for the final success, we could praise every tiny step forward. Many studies show that noticing small progress allows us to stay inspired and less discouraged.
④The second method is to regard failure as data. This means treating failure as information rather than a verdict (评价) on our ability. This led to better levels of persistence in test groups—including both students and workers—that were asked to analyze (分析) what went wrong and change their plans. Researcher Carol Dweck found that the habit of seeing challenges as chances forces people to keep trying.
⑤The writer Samuel Beckett once said, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” But it now seems we should be saying, “Try again, grow stronger.” Grit is not a gift—it is a skill we can train, and by learning to enjoy the process (过程), we may find the road to success is a little smoother.
1.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.①/②③④/⑤ B.①/②③/④⑤ C.①/②/③④⑤ D.①②/③④⑤
2.What does Angela Duckworth think of giving up easily when progress is slow?
A.It’s a way to protect ourselves. B.It is bad for our confidence.
C.It makes us feel worse. D.It might bring danger.
3.Which of the following would Carol Dweck probably agree with?
A.It’s hard to build grit in daily life.
B.Celebrating small wins helps people stay inspired.
C.Treating failure as data can help people keep trying.
D.Many people don’t understand themselves well.
4.How does the writer explain his ideas about grit in Paragraph 5?
A.By giving a fact. B.By using some numbers.C.By telling a story.D.By using a writer’s words.
5.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Useful advice from psychologists. B.How people develop grit.
C.Smarter ways to achieve success. D.Why talent is important to success.

Young people in China are showing off their style with fun bag charms (包挂). These small decorations hang from backpacks and swing as people walk. They help young people show who they are and create a new way of emotional connection.
There are all kinds of these bag charms. Some are soft, plush toys, while others get ideas from traditional Chinese culture or museum pieces. For example, Xi’an Momo Dolls and Sanxingdui’s Bronze Mask series reimagine traditional elements (元素) into new forms. These “China-chic” designs turn bag charms into cultural bridges between the past and present.
These charms offer more than just a decorative touch; they play a key role in breaking the ice among strangers. A shared charm can help people connect with just a smile. As the Chinese New Year came near, Vicky, who lives in Nanjing, bought clothes not just for her family, but for her charms. “I match charms to my mood and clothes,” she explains. “Sometimes they feel like emotional codes — shared understanding brings quick connections at once.”
The charms have become popular because of the new and better ways of making them in places like Guangdong. Dongguan, known as the “designer toy capital”, has thousands of factories using smart technology to create new designs quickly. Today, these charms are reshaping the international image of “Made in China” by telling stories based on local creativity. These small items are building emotional ties with customers around the world and showing special Eastern beauty.
A Grade-10 student from Nanjing shared her thoughts. “Every time I see the same charm on a stranger’s backpack, it feels like discovering a tiny bridge linking two unknown hearts.” Dr Zhang, a teacher from Guangdong University of Finance & Economics, also put forward his view: “If fashionable small goods rush into teenagers’ daily life endlessly, will the nice glow of such lovely accessories (配饰) finally change into meaningless desire?”
1.What can we learn about Sanxingdui Bronze Mask bag charms?
A.They are real ancient museum works.
B.They mainly spread culture inside museums.
C.They are expensive gifts for museum visitors.
D.They carry ancient cultural elements in new forms.
2.What does the writer want to tell us by saying “Sometimes they feel like emotional codes”?
A.Bag charms hold hidden symbols. B.Teens leave messages on their charms.
C.People buy clothes just for charms. D.The same charm can quickly connect people.
3.What helps charms gain worldwide popularity?
A.Popular Chinese New Year shopping. B.New technology and local creativity.
C.Ancient museum collections’ long history. D.Varieties of soft and lovely plush toys.
4.What is Dr Zhang’s opinion towards bag charms?
A.Positive. B.Supportive. C.Worried. D.Curious.

In a small apartment building in New York, two young painters, Johnsy and Sue, lived and worked together. In a cold winter, a serious disease spread in the neighborhood. Unluckily, Johnsy caught the illness. She lay in bed all day, weak and hopeless.
Instead of receiving treatment actively, Johnsy made a strange decision. She watched an old ivy vine (常春藤) outside her window. There were only a few leaves left on the vine after the cold wind. She told Sue that she would die when the last leaf fell.
Sue was worried about her friend. She tried her best to cheer Johnsy up and asked the doctor for help. But Johnsy refused to listen. Her health got worse day by day, and she kept staring at the ivy vine, waiting for the last leaf to drop.
An old painter called Behrman lived on the ground floor. He was over sixty years old. He had never finished a great painting in his life, though he always talked about creating a masterpiece. When Behrman knew Johnsy’s strange idea, he felt sorry for the poor girl.
A terrible storm came on a cold rainy night. The wind and rain beat heavily against the windows. Everyone thought the last ivy leaf would surely fall. However, when Johnsy woke up the next morning, she was surprised to find the last leaf was still firmly on the vine. It stayed there bravely, fighting against the storm.
Day after day, the leaf never fell. Johnsy slowly regained hope and courage. She realized how silly she had been and started to cooperate with the doctor. Finally, she got well completely.
And that afternoon Sue came and said, “Mr. Behrman died of the serious cold today in the hospital. He was ill only two days. People found him in his room, helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. They couldn’t imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. And then they found a lantern, a ladder, some brushes and-look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never fell when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece-he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”

If you have ever had to struggle through a lesson after spending half the night on homework, fighting to keep your eyes open, you are not alone. A recent survey of teenagers shows that over 60% get less than eight hours’ sleep on school nights, and nearly 15% sleep fewer than six hours.
What makes sleep so important is that, while you are asleep, your brain is still quietly at work: it sorts through what you have learned during the day and stores it in lasting memory. In one study, students with eight hours’ sleep did much better in a memory test than those who stayed up all night to review. Getting enough sleep also helps you stay focused in class, think faster and keep a good mood. Students who sleep poorly often feel tired or angry more easily, and some even fall asleep at their desks.
If heavy schoolwork is one reason so many teenagers go to bed late, the habits formed around bedtime are very often another. It has become common to lie in bed with a phone, moving from one short video to the next message long after the lights are off. The blue light from screens tells the brain that it is still daytime, so it is harder to fall asleep. Tea, coffee and cola, drunk late in the day, can leave the mind too awake to rest even around midnight.
The encouraging part is that a few small changes are often enough. Doctors have some simple advice. Try to go to bed and get up at about the same time every day, even on weekends. Keep your phone out of the bedroom, or do something relaxing before sleep, such as reading a paper book. When homework truly cannot be completed, an honest talk with the teacher is wiser than staying up late to get it done. A brain that has rested well simply learns faster; sleep, looked at in the right way, is not time lost but time quietly put to work.
1.What percentage of students in the survey get less than six hours’ sleep?
A.15 %. B.About 60 %. C.Over 80 %. D.Nearly 100 %.
2.What does the brain do while we are sleeping?
A.It rests completely at night.

3.A student who stays up late going over a lesson again and again may _______.
A.remember it for a longer time
B.develop a stronger memory slowly
C.remember less than a rested student
D.become more focused in the morning
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Why does Sleep Matter So Much?

Last week, Year Nine students took part in the school’s first Career Exploration Week, a five-day programme to help them understand how their personality might connect to future jobs.
The week began with a personality assessment (评估) taken by all 240 students. The results, studied by a team of career teachers, sorted students into six personality types: realistic, investigative (研究型的), artistic, social, enterprising (企业型的), and conventional (常规型的). “Many students had never thought about why some activities felt easy while others felt tiring,” said Ms. Tang, the school’s career teacher. “This test gave them a way to talk about those differences.”
On Tuesday and Wednesday, people from twelve different jobs—including engineering, nursing, art design, computer programming, teaching, and accounting (会计)—visited the school to share their experiences. Students went to three forty-minute classes of their choice, where they could ask questions and try small tasks themselves. A computer engineer showed students how to build a simple app; a nurse showed how to take a patient’s blood pressure; an accountant showed how a company’s money is planned and recorded.
The best part of the week was Thursday’s “Job Shadow” afternoon, when 180 students spent three hours at real workplaces around the city. Li Na, who said she was “quiet and careful with details,” shadowed a forensic (司法的) accountant and came back deeply interested. “I never imagined accounting could be like solving puzzles,” she said. “I always thought it was just about filling in forms.”
Another student, Zhang Wei, had always thought he would become a doctor like his father. But after shadowing a paediatrician (儿科医生) for a day, he found that the job’s emotional demands left him feeling tired rather than happy. “I’m a quiet person,” he explained. “I need quiet time to get my energy back. I still want to help people, but maybe medical research would suit me better than seeing patients all day.”
Friday ended with a reflection session. Students wrote short articles about what they had learned and how it might change their subject choices for senior high school. In a survey after the week, 87% of students said it helped them understand themselves better, and 72% said they were now considering jobs they had not known about before.
The school plans to hold Career Exploration Week every year and is building an online library so students can keep exploring all year. “Personality is not fate,”Ms. Tang said at the end.“But knowing who you are—what makes you feel excited, what makes you feel tired, what makes you lose track of time—is the first step to making choices that truly fit you.”

When I was a little boy, I once watched Uncle Henry laugh at a falling leaf for a long time. I pulled my mother’s hand and asked, “Why is Uncle Henry so different?” She sat down beside me and said softly that he had a mental problem. His mind worked like a special clock—not broken, just different.
Years later, Uncle Henry still calls me about eight times every day. The phone rings at breakfast, during homework, and even when I wash my face. I love him, but I only answer two or three of those calls. Our talks always follow a fun pattern. He makes up three imaginary worlds for us. In one, he is my father. In another, he is an army officer giving me orders. In the third, we are both doctors trying to save a sick person.
When the phone rings, I take a breath and say, “Hello?” as if I don’t know him. A happy voice comes back, “It’s your dad, Henry!” or “Officer speaking — do you hear me?” or “Doctor Henry here! The patient needs help!” We act out our roles for a minute, stopping only when we both burst into laughter. Then, in his soft voice, he always says the same words at the end of the calls.
Whenever I hear those words, a warm feeling fills my heart. “So are you,” I always answer. “The two of us!”
This has gone on for years. No matter what happens—sad school reports, angry fights with friends, or lonely rainy days—the calls always come. They chase away my worries and leave me feeling peaceful. Uncle Henry cannot truly understand my growing pains, but he always provides me with steady care.
When I run into trouble, I know he is there, like a doctor on call, to heal my heart. That simple, daily act of love saves me and gives me the strength to keep going.

Anyone who knew Amelia Earhart as a child could hardly have been surprised by her later achievements.
Born in 1897, Amelia was just like a “tomboy” in her childhood, collecting insects, hunting rats and climbing trees along the Missouri River.
Then she moved around the middle west with her parents. There after seeing the wounded soldiers of World War I, she worked as a nurse’s aid and began to admire the wounded pilots.
At 23, a ten-minute plane ride at an air show sparked (点燃) her lifelong love for flying. She recalled, “By the time I got two or three hundred feet off the ground, I knew I had to fly.”
The road to success was always difficult. But she worked hard for her flying dream. In 1923, Amelia became the 16th woman in the world to receive a pilot’s license. Since then, Amelia’s life has always been closely connected with flight.
She wrote and gave speeches about the time when flying would not be just for a few but would become an accepted part of everyday life. Besides, she also broke down barriers(障碍) for women, being the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic.
In 1937, Amelia tried the first around-the-world flight at the equator, but while flying over a small island in the Pacific, Amelia and her partner, Frederick Noonan, disappeared. At the last moment of her life, Amelia could send messages over the radio, but she couldn’t receive any. Her last words were “Circling…cannot see island…cannot hear you...please answer...” Finally, “Gas low...” and then, silence.
Though Amelia died, she remains a legend (传奇), showing that women don’t have to live with limits and everyone has oceans to fly dreams.

Plastic is everywhere. According to the United Nations, over 8 million tons of plastic waste enters the world’s oceans every year. There’s plastic litter on the highest mountains and in the deepest parts of the sea.
Now plastic has been found in another unexpected place: in the nests of wild birds. According to a study published in the journal Environmental Pollution, many bird species are using small pieces of plastic litter as building materials for their nests.
Marta García is a biologist at the University of Barcelona, in Spain. She’s the study’s lead author. “For me, a bird nest made of plastic could be a symbol of our times,” she said. “They can’t find enough natural materials, so they use rubbish.”
García says the age we’re in now is the period in which human activity has had a huge influence on the natural environment. Birds using plastic waste in their nests is one clear example of that influence.
New nest materials
Wild birds build nests to protect their eggs and baby birds. Normally, they use natural materials like grass, twigs, leaves and feathers to build soft and strong nests.
But according to García’s study, of the 80 common bird species studied across Europe, 45 have been seen using plastic rubbish in their nests. Nearly three out of every four of those nests contained plastic waste, such as plastic bags, bottle caps, and plastic ropes. The others contained paper or cloth waste, such as old candy wrappers or cloth strips.
García said that she and her team first learned about birds using plastic in nests when they noticed photos shared by bird watchers online. They decided to learn more by doing a wider study. For their research, the scientists collected photos of bird nests from research papers, nature websites, and bird lover communities. They found examples from 23 countries across Europe. Some had been taken by scientists. Some had been taken by nature photographers. Many had been taken by common bird watchers who were just interested.
What does it mean?
Scientists aren’t sure why birds are choosing litter instead of natural materials. But they have theories. Some areas are losing natural plant materials as cities expand. Birds could be turning to litter because they can’t find enough grass or twigs. It’s also possible that birds are selecting plastic because it’s light and easy to carry. Or they’re attracted by its bright colors.
Scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife in many ways. But it isn’t clear that the plastic in nests is directly hurting the birds. “It’s really a surprising example of the power of adaptation,” García said. “What are the long-term consequences of these adaptations? We don’t know yet.”
1.What does García mean by saying “a bird nest made of plastic could be a symbol of our times”?
A.Birds prefer light and bright plastic materials for nests.
B.All birds are now forced to build nests with plastic waste.
C.Plastic nests help birds protect their eggs better from enemies.
D.Human activities have caused great changes to the natural environment.
2.How did García and her team do their research on birds’ plastic nests?
A.By collecting and studying photos of nests from different sources.
B.By taking lots of photos of birds in controlled environments.
C.By watching birds build nests closely in their natural habitats.
D.By interviewing local bird watchers about their findings.
3.What does the underlined word “expand” most probably mean?
A.Shrinking. B.Growing larger. C.Disappearing. D.Moving.
4.What can we learn from García’s words in the last paragraph?
A.She plans to stop birds from using plastic to build nests.
B.She thinks birds should not change their nest-building habits.
C.She is sure that plastic pollution is good for wild birds.
D.She believes adaptation is amazing but its long-term results are unknown.
5.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Plastic Waste Is Harming All Wild Animals
B.Wild Birds Are in Great Danger Now
C.Wild Birds Are Using Trash to Build Their Nests
D.Scientists Photograph Birds Living with Plastic Waste
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.B 4.D 5.C
1.根据第三、四段中“…a bird nest made of plastic could be a symbol of our times…”以及“García says the age we're in now is the period in which human activity has had a huge influence on the natural environment.”
2.根据第七段第三句“For their research, the scientists collected photos of bird nests from research papers, nature websites, and bird lover communities.”
3.根据第八段中“Some areas are losing natural plant materials as cities expand. Birds could be turning to litter because they can’t find enough grass or twigs.”
4.根据最后一段中的“‘It’s really a surprising example of the power of adaptation,’ García said. ‘What are the long-term consequences of these adaptations? We don’t know yet.’”
Vertical farming is a new type of agricultural model that grows crops in vertically stacked layers, usually inside controlled indoor environments. With the rapid growth of the global population and the reduction of arable land, this technology is seen as an important solution to future food shortages.
How does vertical farming work? The core of vertical farming is to simulate the natural growth environment of plants in a closed space.
- Lighting System: Instead of sunlight, vertical farms use full-spectrum LED lights that can accurately adjust the light intensity, wavelength and illumination time according to different growth stages of crops, ensuring that plants get the most suitable light for photosynthesis.
- Water Circulation System: Most vertical farms adopt hydroponic or aeroponic technology. Plants grow in nutrient solution or mist environment instead of soil. The water is recycled in the closed system, which can save more than 90% of water compared with traditional farming.
- Environmental Control System: Sensors monitor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration and other indicators in real time, keeping the environment in the best state for plant growth around the clock. This makes vertical farming unaffected by seasons and bad weather.
Vertical farming has many advantages. It can be built in cities, greatly shortening the distance from farm to table and reducing the carbon emissions caused by transportation. It also avoids the use of pesticides because the closed environment is not easy to breed pests, so the produced vegetables are safer and healthier.
However, vertical farming also faces challenges. The high cost of equipment and electricity is the biggest obstacle to its large-scale promotion. At present, most vertical farms are only suitable for growing leafy vegetables with short growth cycles, and it is still difficult to cultivate staple foods such as rice and wheat.
Despite the limitations, with the continuous progress of technology, vertical farming is gradually moving from the experimental stage to commercial application. It may become an important part of the urban food supply system in the near future.
1.Which of the following are the core systems of vertical farming?
① Lighting System ② Water Circulation System ③ Transportation System ④ Environmental Control System
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
2.What is the biggest advantage of vertical farming in terms of water use?
A.It uses nutrient solution instead of water completely.
B.It recycles water and saves a large amount of water.
C.It only needs water when planting staple foods.
D.It consumes more water but produces more food.
3.What is the main challenge that stops vertical farming from being widely used?
A.The crops grow too slowly.
B.It can only grow in rural areas.
C.The equipment and power costs are high.
D.It produces food with worse taste.
4.Where is this passage most probably taken from?
A.A science magazine.B.A travel guidebook. C.A history textbook. D.A fashion magazine.

My role model is a street calligrapher I meet near the community park. He is warm and optimistic, always wearing a big smile even on cold days.
Years ago, a serious accident left him unable to move his right hand, which he used to paint and write for a living. Instead of sinking into despair, he practiced writing with his left hand thousands of times every day, even when his arm ached badly. Now his strong, elegant characters always draw crowds of passers-by.
I learn that difficulties are never unbeatable. When I face study stress or frustration, I will keep trying instead of giving up easily.

例文
Never give up
Life is full of difficulties. In my opinion, never giving up means sticking to our goals even when they seem impossible.
Once I failed my English speech competition. I was nervous and forgot my lines. I felt terrible and planned to give up. But I told myself not to lose heart. I practised every day. I recorded my speech and corrected my pronunciation again and again. Whenever I wanted to stop, I encouraged myself to keep trying.
Months later, I took part in another competition. This time I finished my speech smoothly. I learnt that dreams may be far but can be reached; wishes may be hard but can come true with persistence. As long as we never give up, we will make progress.

Know Yourself, Be Yourself
Everyone has a personality of his own. I am a quiet and careful boy, and I always think twice before I act.
However, being too quiet also brings me trouble. In group work I seldom share my ideas, so my classmates sometimes think I am not interested. Last term, I lost a good chance in an English speech competition simply because I was afraid of speaking in front of others.
To change this, I began to speak out at least once in every group discussion and joined the speech club. Little by little, I have become more confident. Now I know that accepting who I am and improving myself at the same time is the best way to grow.

7
8. Your best friend often gets low marks in Maths exams. As a person with a growth mindset, please give him or her a useful method.

“It was common for me to fall into the water when I started practicing,” recalled Yang, adding that it took her three years to learn the basic 4 of bamboo drifting.
In order to learn more bamboo drifting skills, Yang had to practice countless 5 movements on a bamboo pole that was 9 m in length and 15 cm in diameter, and stand all the physical 6 that came with it. Through years of hard training, Yang now considers the bamboo pole as her “best friend”.

A.remember it for a longer time
B.develop a stronger memory slowly

A.Why does Sleep Matter So Much?
B.Why do Teenagers Stay Up So Late?
C.How can Students Change Bad Habits?
D.What does The Study’s Memory Test Show?

5.What does Ms. Tang mean by saying “Personality is not fate”?
A.One’s personality does not fully decide what they can do.
B.Personality tests are unreliable and should be ignored entirely.
C.Students should choose careers regardless of their personality.
D.Only extroverts can achieve real and lasting career success.
