While the world celebrates Beijing’s imperial grandeur, Hou Lei, a 43-year-old researcher, is busy documenting the city’s easily forgotten details: a neglected jockey club, the specific taste of fermented tofu, and stories of elderly residents who once assisted great historians.
“If local writers don’t record these smallest and most hidden details, they will disappear,” Hou said. A strikingly overlooked part of Beijing’s history is horse racing, which few people know once thrived in the city center. Dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, it became an international sport by the 1920s and was a popular entertainment.
Hou is renowned for uncovering overlooked details, focusing on ordinary Beijingers’ daily lives. In his Spring Festival-related books and lectures, he highlights little-seen traditions, including four essential dishes: mustard root, stir-fried pickled cucumber, tofu with fermented black beans, and roupidong. “These modest dishes mattered,” Hou said. “Even the poorest families ensured they were on the table.”
With his family living in Beijing for over 150 years, he still resides in a hutong to conduct research, often walking alleyways to photograph celebrities’ former residences and collect stories. On one such walk, Hou met an elderly man who told him he had once assisted historian Gu Jiegang (1893 — 1980) and was still dedicated to preserving his research. “That encounter reinforced my belief that Beijing’s hutong are treasure,” Hou said.
As the author of Beijing Smoke-like Trees and The Record of Beijing’s Prosperity, Hou has also recently edited Anecdotes of the Yan Capital, a collection of research on Beijing. “Prose demands discipline and inner strength,” he said. “The more you write, the harder it gets because you must keep surpassing yourself.”
Still, he believes Beijing’s cultural richness leaves plenty to explore. “People have been writing about Beijing since the Yuan Dynasty,” Hou said. “Different writers capture its people, its flavors and its stories. I will keep writing in the Beijing dialect, continuing to uncover the memories buried in the city.”
1.Why does Hou Lei record the details of Beijing life?
2.What reinforced Hou Lei’s belief that Beijing’s hutong are treasure?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Writing becomes more challenging over time, because there is no much lef t to explore.
4.Besides Hou Lei’s methods, what other ways would you use to preserve Beijing’s traditional culture? (In about 40 words)

Emma, a Brookfield High School student from Canada, decided that she would devote herself to reducing food waste so that she could make a meaningful difference in her community.
To tackle the problem, Emma planned to create a school composting system that could turn cafeteria leftovers into soil for the school garden. Now her plan is becoming a reality. Ten compost bins are scheduled to be installed around campus in early April.
As she began researching food waste, Emma discovered an online tool that helped schools estimate how much waste they produced each week. After entering data from her school cafeteria, she realised that hundreds of kilogrammes of food were being thrown away every month. At the suggestion of her biology teacher, Karen Mills, she first conducted a survey among students and staff to learn more about their eating habits and attitudes toward recycling. Then she continued her research, contacting a local environmental group for advice on composting equipment and maintenance. Since she did not have enough money to begin the project, she persuaded Brookfield’s principal to support her after explaining how the system could benefit both the school and the neighbourhood.
Because the school provided the initial funding for the bins and basic equipment, the project has grown to include a student volunteer team responsible for collecting and sorting food waste. The finished compost is expected to be used in the school garden, where vegetables and flowers will be grown for science lessons and community events.
“It feels amazing to think that an idea I had during lunch one day could turn into something this useful,” said Emma, expressing thanks for Mills’ guidance.
1.What was Emma’s plan for reducing food waste at school?
2.How did Emma convince the principal to support her project?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
After receiving advice from a local environmental group, Emma conducted a survey among students and staff to learn more about their eating habits and attitudes.
4.What can you learn from Emma’s story about solving problems in daily life? (In about 40 words)

Our lives are increasingly getting faster. A text message arrives; we feel compelled to respond immediately. An email appears, and we interrupt whatever we were doing to acknowledge it. If something is asking for our attention right now, we believe it must deserve it. But urgency and importance are not the same thing.
Urgent matters demand immediate action. Important matters shape how we live our lives. The problem is that urgent matters are almost always easier to address. They arrive clearly defined and time-bound: answer this message, meet this deadline. Once completed, they give us the satisfying feeling of progress.
Important matters, such as how we take care of our health and advance in our careers, unfold slowly. They require reflection rather than reaction. Questions in these areas don’t demand immediate answers, but you do have to answer them, since they profoundly influence how you will live your life.
When we respond to immediate cues rather than consider distant consequences, we gradually shift our attention away from what matters most. We become adept at managing the urgent while forgetting about what’s important. Over time, the patterns we create through reacting rather than reflecting solidify into what I like to call “life grooves.” The more deeply those grooves form, the harder they are to step out of. In this way, urgency culture can quietly limit our freedom.
Living well requires more than efficiently responding to external demands. It involves choosing actions and cultivating habits that reflect the kind of person you want to become. But reflection takes time, and urgency rarely makes space for it. So, one of the first steps to living well is choosing to give yourself the time to make good choices.
The question of how to spend a single afternoon may seem trivial, but the pattern of how we spend our afternoons shapes who we become. Not everything urgent is important, and the challenge is recognizing the difference before our habits create a life for us that we would rather not have.
1.In what way are important matters different from urgent ones?
2.How can “life grooves” affect our freedom?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
One of the first steps to living well is responding to external demands more efficiently.
4.What is one important matter in your life, and how will you give it more space? (In about 40 words)

Just as we have an individual personality, we also have a “time personality”. The personality captures our relationship to time: whether we’re punctual (守时的), how much time we believe we have, and specific time-related habits we may display. According to Kristin Anderson, founder of Madison Square Psychotherapy, time personality is our natural style when it comes to managing time. For the majority of us, our time personality tends to fall along a range, from very rigid to very flexible.
Here’s a brief overview of four common time personalities. A “time optimist” tends to underestimate how long things take, leading to a pattern of ongoing delays. On the other end of the range, we have the “time anxious” personality. These people tend to be anxious to begin with. They also assume everything might go wrong (e.g., traffic delays, getting lost). Therefore, they show up to commitments far in advance. Those in the “time bender” category are driven by their emotions, or inspiration. They seem to live in their own personal time zone, maximizing “flow state” when they’ve entered it. For those who identify with the “time blind” personality, sensing the passage of time is challenging. They might start a task and, by the time they check the clock, an entire hour has disappeared somehow.
What exactly drives our varying relationships with time perception? Personality is a key player. People, characterized by competitiveness, ambition, and drive, may be more likely to be time anxious and rigid about schedules. In contrast, those who have characteristics like patience, calmness and cooperativeness tend to be flexible and may lean toward being time benders. Neurobiological factors also play a role. Higher dopamine (多巴胺) levels in the brain can speed up the brain’s internal clock, impacting our perception of time. Finally, age can affect our time perception. This is because adults have fewer new experiences and slower dopamine metabolism (新陈代谢), which makes time seem like it’s going by faster than it actually is.
While each time personality comes with its own set of drawbacks when not properly managed, the good news is that we can work with these tendencies to manage our time better.
1.What is time personality according to Kristin Anderson?
2.What time personalities are mentioned in the passage?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
With fewer new experiences and slower dopamine metabolism, adults perceive time as passing more slowly.
4.Which time personality fits you most closely? How will you work with it to manage your time better? (In about 40 words)

Passage 1
In April 2021, my grandparents’ lives were turned upside down instantly. A car drove into their home, literally. The vehicle went through the front wall of their home, through the living room, and then hit the border between the living room and kitchen.
My grandfather was standing in front of the refrigerator; the car hitting the wall threw him across the kitchen. He was in serious condition and unable to walk. We were all so worried about him. How would he deal with something so awful happening at his age?
But what surprised everyone was how positive my grandfather remained throughout the entire thing. He was grateful he was alive when the accident could have quickly taken his life. He taught us that even when life gets you down, you have to be grateful for the things you do have rather than dwelling on the things you don’t have.
Even though he could not walk or function as he had previously, my grandpa found ways to become satisfied: such as reading his favorite newspaper or receiving a call from a friend or family member. He was grateful for the kind nurses, physical therapists, and other medical personnel who saved his life and helped him recover.
When something so life-changing happens to a close family member, it puts life into perspective and makes you thankful for the little things in life. Meanwhile, all the little things that used to stress us out suddenly don’t matter in the large scheme of things. Anything can happen, and finding things that make you happy every day is essential.
1.What happened to the author’s grandpa in April 2021?
2.Why was the author’s grandfather grateful for the accident?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The author has realized that the little things that used to stress us out remain significant in the large scheme of things.
4.How has a specific event changed your perspective on life? Please share your experience. (In about 40 words)
Passage 2
Fast fashion has made it easy for consumers to purchase new clothing frequently and at low cost. But today many people are now seeking something better: clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. This is why craftsmanship is coming back.
One visible expression of this shift is the renewed interest in repairing garments. From patching worn spots to adding personal embroidery (刺绣), people are doing it for fun or making their own style. With visible mending, they are not hiding the damage, but showing the story. This hands-on engagement fosters a deeper connection between individuals and their clothing. People no longer just want to wear clothes — they want to be part of them.
The appreciation for craftsmanship is not limited to personal practices, but extends to a broader cultural reevaluation of fashion traditions. Techniques and styles once dismissed as outdated are now increasingly valued for their detail, history, and authenticity. In contrast to the uniformity promoted by fast fashion, many consumers are turning toward garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. You see them in handmade jackets and detailed weaving.
Sustainability is another major driver of the revival. Fast fashion generates enormous waste and environmental harm, while handcrafted pieces frequently use natural and recycled materials. Many are made to order, eliminating excess production, and most can be repaired and passed down rather than thrown away. Choosing handmade is gentler on the planet and better to the people making the clothes. While big retailers still push out the most clothes, smaller brands are changing the game — not by volume, but by values. They focus on quality over quantity, working with skilled local makers and using materials that last. To avoid waste, many of them slow down production, skip the constant trend-chasing, and even offer pre-orders, which is gaining popularity for letting people wear something real.
In a world full of quick, disposable goods, the comeback of craftsmanship represents not a passing trend, but a fundamental shift toward meaning, responsibility, and lasting value in fashion.
1.What kind of clothes are many people looking for today?
2.Apart from personal interest, what other factors contribute to the comeback of craftsmanship?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Many smaller fashion brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to gain popularity.
4.How will you apply craftsmanship in another field besides fashion? (In about 40 words)
Passage 3
Last month, I visited a well-known art museum in the city with my wife. As we stood before a priceless impressionist painting, I noticed something strange: nearly every teenager around us was not looking at the paintings. Their arms extended, and their eyes were fixed on the small screens of their cellphones. They were taking photos — dozens of them — framing the artwork and adjusting angles, all without pausing to actually see the painting itself.
This scene made me wonder: have we, as a generation, lost the ability to experience life directly? It seems that for many of us, an event is not real unless it is documented and shared on social media. We don’t just go to a concert; we capture it to post online. We don’t just watch a sunset; we film it for the social media platform.
I used to be one of those people. Last summer, I went to a music festival and spent the entire night holding my phone above my head, trying to record every song. When I got home, I was exhausted — and disappointed. My videos were shaky, the audio was terrible, and I couldn’t remember a single note I had “watched” live. Worse, I had missed the chance to dance with my friends or feel the music in my bones. That night, I realized I had prioritized sharing the moment over living it.
So, I have made a promise to myself: to put my phone down more often and be fully present in those times that make life meaningful. We need to look at the painting instead of photographing it, and dance to the music instead of recording it. Why let our phone cameras become a barrier between us and the world? After all, the best memories are not the ones we capture on camera — they are the ones we capture in our hearts.
1.What were the teenagers busy doing in the museum?
2.What did the author realize after the music festival?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
For the best memories, the author has decided to keep records of the meaningful moments.
4.Do you agree that the cellphone camera has become a barrier between us and the world? Why or why not? (In about 40 words)
Passage 4
It often took me weeks or even months to begin writing something. I tended to put it off, reasoning that at some point I would land in that perfect moment where my thoughts would flow. But that moment didn’t always arrive, and I ended up putting together a hurriedly written piece only when the deadline became dangerously close.
It was 10 p.m. on a winter night and I was sitting at my laptop, staring at a blank Word document. My thesis proposal deadline approached. I hadn’t written a word despite weeks of thinking. Earlier that evening, when I met another Ph.D.student, Sachin, for our regular monthly dinner, he was equally stuck — buried under the weight of a fellowship application. We set out to make a change. So, we made a pact (约定): After dinner, we would sit together, laptops open, phones away, no excuses. It was the fuel I needed to finally start writing.
Our informal pact soon became a habit. We scheduled weekly 90-minute sessions, which gave us a distraction-free space to write something, however imperfect. We began each session by naming a small goal. That 5-minute planning made the rest of the session surprisingly productive. Instead of worrying about writing an entire proposal, we only had to finish a tiny piece of it. Those small wins built confidence. A few sentences grew into paragraphs, then into complete proposals with enough time before the deadline to get feedback from professors. Writing never got easy, as I’d hoped, but it became less isolating and more productive. Sachin and I had both seen our mates face similar challenges and wanted to bring this experience to a broader group. So we launched co-working sessions for the students in our department. We started with 5 minutes of goal setting, followed by 75 minutes of silent, focused writing, and ended with a short reflection period.
Now dozens of students have attended. What began as two anxious students staring at blank screens has grown into a small community that makes writing less lonely. Our experience showed us that accountability and a shared sense of purpose can lower the barriers that make writing so scary. No one should have to write alone
1.What was the pact between the author and Sachin for writing?
2.Why did the author and Sachin start co-working sessions for their mates?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The co-working sessions helped to remove the block that made writing frightening.
4.Apart from making a pact, what other way(s) would you use to improve productivity? (In about 40 words)

“Winners never quit and quitters never win.” It’s a great expression of our admiration of courage and persistence (坚持). But as Aristotle observed over 2,000 years ago, actions pushed to their extreme turn into disasters.
There is a famous story about the Scottish king Robert the Bruce. Robert hid in a cave after his sixth defeat by the English, and there he watched a spider (蜘蛛) try to secure its web to the cave wall. The spider tried and failed six times before finally succeeding. Robert then decided to return to the fight, winning independence for the Scots — on the seventh attempt.
King Robert’s story offers a deep well of inspiration for those who most need it. But lately I’ve been thinking about a possibility the story ignores. What if the spider had been climbing the wrong corner of the cave?
There’s a crucial difference between failing at the right thing and persisting at the wrong one. When we fail at the right thing, persistence makes sense. We learn, adjust, and try again. But when we persist with the wrong thing, every bit of effort takes us further from where we are meant to be.
Quitting is in fact necessary for growth. By ending something, we create space for something new to grow. We need to exit the things that don’t work anymore to be able to enter the ones that make sense for who we are today.
We can imagine a different version of King Robert’s story. In this story, the spider falls a seventh time. It stops on the stone floor — and then turns, moving slowly towards a different corner of the cave, where the wind is calmer and the flies more plentiful.
1.What is Aristotle’s observation according to this passage?
2.Why is quitting necessary for growth?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
►Failing at the right thing takes us further from where we are meant to be.
4.How can you apply the idea of “moving towards a different corner” to a real-life challenge?
(In about 40 words)
There’s something magical about the way imagination works. Around the world, kids are using imagination in ways that were once only found in science fiction.
Take the story of Mark Lee. He loved biking around his neighbourhood but grew upset seeing that many plastic bottles littered the parks and sidewalks. Instead of simply complaining, he decided to do something about it.
Using an old 3D printer, Mark started experimenting. He melted (熔化) plastic bottles down and tried shaping them into small bricks. At first, everything went wrong — the plastic broke, the printer jammed, and the pieces didn’t fit together. Friends laughed a little, and even Mark’s parents thought he should just give up.
But Mark had a different idea. He redesigned the bricks to lock together like puzzle (拼图) pieces and adjusted the heating temperature carefully. After months of trial and error, he succeeded. With a little help from his school and the local community centre, Mark used his bricks to build a small bike shelter for his neighbourhood.
And he’s not alone. Thirteen-year-old Sally Carter loved reading fantasy books. Inspired by magical maps in her stories, she wondered: what if we could build a real-world app that helps people explore hidden places in their own cities? She gathered friends, learned some basic programming, and together they created an app that maps small local parks and gardens few people knew about. Their app quickly grew popular in town and even won a local youth innovation award.
Next time you see a young person lost in thought, don’t rush to pull them back. They might just be imagining the next great idea.
1.What upset Mark when he was biking around his neighbourhood?
2.How does the app created by Sally and her friends help?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
> With encouragement from his friends and parents, Mark built a small bike shelter for his neighbourhood after months of trial and error.
4.How can you put your imagination into practice as Mark and Sally did? (In about 40 words)
Growing up, I idealised independence. I always wanted my own efforts to be enough. When I decided to pursue a postgraduate degree, I wanted to develop a novel research programme and quickly establish myself as an independent scientist. But I was unrealistically optimistic about what I could achieve.
As I began designing experiments, my committee members warned me about the challenges I would face. But my need for independence drove me to push forward with my research plan. As a result, the first four years of my postgraduate career were defined by a series of failures.
During my second year, I failed my comprehensive exam because my proposal was unclear. During my third year, I discovered that after treating thousands of seeds, I obtained just one plant I could use for experiments. By my fourth year, my desperation to succeed overshadowed my desire for independence.
My adviser and I devised (想出) a somewhat unusual solution: I would spend three months in a collaborating (合作的) lab to obtain specialised training. I worked extensively with other students, constantly asked questions, and helped with ongoing projects to learn everything I could. Finally, I conducted an elegant experiment that would not have been possible without the help of the members in the lab.
My adviser saw this experience as a groundbreaking success, emphasising the collaborating skills I acquired. A few months later, when I repeated the experiment in my home lab, I produced more publishable data. By learning when to ask for help, I eventually found myself on the way to becoming an independent scientist.
1.In the beginning, what drove the author to push forward with the research plan?
2.What was the solution by the adviser and the author after those repeated failures?
3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
> The adviser considered the author’s experience in the lab a groundbreaking success because publishable data had been produced.
4.From this story, what can you learn about “independence”? (In about 40 words)
In the morning, I write this to-do list:
1. Go to the bank.
2. Get a nice haircut.
3. Pick up my academic statement from college.
4. Submit my poems.
I think, “That’s enough for one day.”
Up until a few years ago, I didn’t aim to be anywhere. And in order to be nowhere, one does not need a to-do list as a guide. Focusing only on the most pressing matter in front of me was enough. Let the next urgent moment think for me.
My mother had tried to teach me about planning my day ever since I was 10. But I never practiced it until I was 25 and done with college. That’s when I awoke to the fact that I didn’t want to waste any more time. I live in Nigeria, where life and success can be difficult. There seem to be many roads to failure here.
I grew up seeing my mother firmly in charge of her day. She knew — and still knows — where she needed to be at every moment, in every detail. She may not be good at singing, acting, or sports. But she is excellent at planning. Every day she writes a list. I never understood why she had to write down a list that consists of items you can easily hold in your mind. “Your to-do list is like your second mind,” she told my younger self. “If you ever feel lost or overwhelmed, you consult your second mind.”
I didn’t understand what she meant by “a second mind” until I seemed to lose my first mind in my everyday life. Sometimes, it seems as though it’s the rainy season in my mind, flooded with confused and distracting thoughts that lead nowhere. I need a second mind — now!
As I sit in the barbershop awaiting my nice haircut, a friend asks me, “What’s next?”
“Pick up my academic statement from college,” I say. “Then submit my poems.”
“You’ve got it figured out like a granny,” he jokes.
“No,” I say, “like my mother.”

2.What does the underlined phrase mean?(no more than 3 words)
3.What kind of person is the author’s mother?(no more than 10words)
4.When did the author turn to “a second mind” for help?(no more than 10 words)

1.Because he believes that if local writers don’t record them, they will disappear. 2.His encounter with an elderly man who was dedicated to preserving Gu Jiegang’s research. 3.Writing becomes more challenging over time, because there is not much left to explore.
The more you write, the harder it gets because you must keep surpassing yourself. 4.I would create short videos about disappearing traditions and share them on social media to attract young people. Also, I would organize community workshops where elderly residents teach traditional crafts to children, keeping the skills alive through hands-on experience.
根据第四段“On one such walk, Hou met an elderly man who told him he had once assisted historian Gu Jiegang (1893 — 1980) and was still dedicated to preserving his research. “That encounter reinforced my belief that Beijing’s hutong are treasure,” Hou said.(一次走访途中,侯磊偶遇一位老人。老人称自己曾协助历史学家顾颉刚,至今仍致力于整理留存其研究资料。这次相遇让他愈发坚信,北京胡同处处皆是珍宝)”可知,遇到了一位致力于保护顾颉刚研究成果的老人让侯磊更加坚信北京的胡同是珍贵的财富。
3.考查细节理解。根据第五段“The more you write, the harder it gets because you must keep surpassing yourself.(你写得越多,就越会发现难度在不断增加,因为你必须不断超越自我)”可知,错误部分为“because there is not much left to explore”。
1.Her plan was to create a school composting system that could turn cafeteria leftovers into soil for the school garden. 2.She persuaded the principal by explaining how the system could benefit both the school and the neighbourhood. 3.After receiving advice from a local environmental group, Emma conducted a survey among students and staff to learn more about their eating habits and attitudes. Because she conducted the survey before contacting the local environmental group. 4.From Emma's story, I learn that solving daily problems requires initiative and perseverance. By researching thoroughly, seeking guidance from teachers, and communicating effectively with decision-makers, we can turn small ideas into meaningful changes that benefit our community.
根据第二段中“Emma planned to create a school composting system that could turn cafeteria leftovers into soil for the school garden.(Emma计划创建一个学校堆肥系统,将食堂剩菜变成学校花园的土壤)”可知,Emma的计划是建立校园堆肥系统,把食堂残余食物转化为花园用土。 Her plan was to create a school composting system that could turn cafeteria leftovers into soil for the school garden.
根据第三段中“Since she did not have enough money to begin the project, she persuaded Brookfield’s principal to support her after explaining how the system could benefit both the school and the neighbourhood.(由于她没有足够的钱开始这个项目,她在解释了该系统如何使学校和社区受益后,说服Brookfield的校长支持她)”以及第四段中“Because the school provided the initial funding for the bins and basic equipment, the project has grown to include a student volunteer team responsible for collecting and sorting food waste.(由于学校为垃圾箱和基本设备提供了初始资金,该项目已经发展到包括一个负责收集和分类食物垃圾的学生志愿者团队)”可知,Emma向校长解释了系统对学校和社区的双重好处,并指出学校只需提供初始资金。 She persuaded the principal by explaining how the system could benefit both the school and the neighbourhood.
根据第三段中“After entering data from her school cafeteria, she realised that hundreds of kilogrammes of food were being thrown away every month. At the suggestion of her biology teacher, Karen Mills, she first conducted a survey among students and staff to learn more about their eating habits and attitudes toward recycling. Then she continued her research, contacting a local environmental group for advice on composting equipment and maintenance.(在输入学校自助餐厅的数据后,她意识到每个月都有数百公斤的食物被扔掉。在生物老师凯伦·米尔斯的建议下,她首先对学生和教职员工进行了一项调查,以了解他们的饮食习惯和对回收的态度。然后,她继续她的研究,联系当地一个环保组织,寻求堆肥设备和维护方面的建议)”可知,Emma做调查在前,联系环保组织需求意见在后,原句颠倒了时间顺序。故答案为After receiving advice from a local environmental group, Emma conducted a survey among students and staff to learn more about their eating habits and attitudes. Because she conducted the survey before contacting the local environmental group.
From Emma’s story, I learn that solving daily problems requires initiative and perseverance. By researching thoroughly, seeking guidance from teachers, and communicating effectively with decision-makers, we can turn small ideas into meaningful changes that benefit our community.
1.Urgent matters need immediate action and are easy to deal with, while important matters unfold slowly, require reflection and shape our lives. 2.The deeper life grooves form, the harder it is to step out of them, which quietly limits our freedom. 3.One of the first steps to living well isresponding to external demands more efficiently. According to the passage, one of the first steps to living well is choosing to give ourselves time to make good choices instead of responding to external demands efficiently. 4.Reading is an important matter in my life. I will spare fixed time every day to read books, put aside trivial distractions and stick to this good habit to improve myself.(开放性试题,答案合理即可)。
Important matters shape how we live our lives.(紧急事务需要立即行动。重要事务塑造我们的生活方式。)”以及第三段“Important matters, such as how we take care of our health and advance in our careers, unfold slowly. They require reflection rather than reaction.(重要事务进展缓慢,需要深思而非即时反应)”可知,紧急事务需要立刻处理、简单易完成,而重要事务进展缓慢,需要深思,深刻影响人生。
根据第四段“The more deeply those grooves form, the harder they are to step out of. In this way, urgency culture can quietly limit our freedom.(这些生活惯性越深,人们就越难摆脱,紧急文化会悄悄限制我们的自由。)”
根据第五段“So, one of the first steps to living well is choosing to give yourself the time to make good choices.(所以过好生活的首要步骤之一是给自己留出时间,做出正确的选择。)” 故“responding to external demands more efficiently”错误。
Reading is an important matter in my life. I will spare fixed time every day to read books, put aside trivial distractions and stick to this good habit to improve myself.(开放性试题,答案合理即可)。
1.Time personality is our natural style when it comes to managing time. 2.Time optimist, time anxious, time bender and time blind. 3.With fewer new experiences and slower dopamine metabolism, adults perceive time as passingmore slowly.
With fewer new experiences and slower dopamine metabolism, adults perceive time as passing faster. 4.I am a time optimist. I always underestimate how long things take and often fall behind schedule. I will make detailed plans ahead and set earlier deadlines to avoid delays. I also remind myself to be more realistic about time every day.
根据原文第一段“According to Kristin Anderson, founder of Madison Square Psychotherapy, time personality is our natural style when it comes to managing time.(麦迪逊广场心理治疗中心创始人Kristin Anderson认为,时间性格是我们在时间管理方面与生俱来的行事方式。)”
根据原文第二段“Here’s a brief overview of four common time personalities.(以下是四种常见时间性格的简要概述。)”
根据原文第三段“This is because adults have fewer new experiences and slower dopamine metabolism, which makes time seem like it’s going by faster than it actually is.(这是因为成年人新鲜体验变少、多巴胺新陈代谢变慢,这会让时间看起来比实际流逝得更快。)”
根据第二段“A “time optimist” tends to underestimate how long things take, leading to a pattern of ongoing delays.(“时间乐观型”的人往往会低估做事情所需的时间,进而形成习惯性拖延、不断迟到的状态。)”

Dear Jim,
Knowing you’re interested in my entry for the school’s “Salute to Aerospace, Youth for the Nation” call for works, I’m glad to introduce it to you.
My work is a hand-drawn picture: it features a young Chinese astronaut standing beside Tiangong Space Station, with a line of footprints stretching toward space behind him, each of which is marked with a signature of us young students. I got the idea after watching astronauts’ space live lesson last year. This activity makes me deeply realize that most Chinese aerospace pioneers started their career when they were young. Just like them, we teenagers are ready to devote our youth to our country’s development.

Dear Jim,
I’m glad to hear from you! I’d like to share my proposal for our school’s “Healthy Campus” campaign.
My proposal is to establish a “Mental Health Corner” in the school library. This area would provide comfortable seating, relaxing music, and books on emotional well-being. We could also invite psychology teachers to host weekly sharing sessions.
I believe this initiative is necessary for several reasons. Firstly, high school students are under tremendous academic pressure, and having a quiet space to unwind can greatly relieve anxiety. Secondly, it encourages open communication, helping students realize they are not alone. A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Dear Jim,
Glad to hear from you! I’m excited to share my project for the “Painting China with Intelligence” innovation contest.
I made a digital animation based on Dunhuang murals using AI painting tools. It brings Dunhuang murals to life — those ancient figures now dance beautifully across the screen with modern visual effects. By combining traditional art with technology, I aimed to show that cultural heritage can be both timeless and trendy.
This experience was truly eye-opening. I realized technology isn’t just about coding; it’s a powerful bridge connecting our past to the future. Watching thousand-year-old paintings breathe again filled me with pride in our culture and confidence in digital innovation.
Have you ever tried mixing tech with art? Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

1.A car drove into his home and threw him across the kitchen. 2.He had a belief that you have to be grateful for things you do have rather than dwelling on the things you don’t have. 3.The author has realized that the little things that used to stress us out remain significant in the large scheme of things.
According to the passage, the author has realized that the little things that used to stress us out don’t matter in the large scheme of things. 4.By participating in a cultural exchange programme, I’ve learned that embracing diversity enriches our understanding of the world and fosters empathy and global-mindedness. This experience has been profoundly meaningful, highlighting the value of open-mindedness and the beauty in our interconnectedness.
根据第一段“A car drove into their home, literally.(一辆汽车真的撞进了他们的家中)”以及第二段“My grandfather was standing in front of the refrigerator; the car hitting the wall threw him across the kitchen.(我的祖父正站在冰箱前面;汽车撞到墙后,把他甩到厨房另一端)”可知,一辆汽车撞进了他的家,把他甩到厨房另一端。
根据第三段“He was grateful he was alive when the accident could have quickly taken his life. He taught us that even when life gets you down, you have to be grateful for the things you do have rather than dwelling on the things you don’t have. (那次事故本有可能夺去他的生命,但他却幸存了下来,这让他深感庆幸。他告诉我们,即便生活让你感到沮丧,你也应该对所拥有的东西心怀感激,而不要总是纠结于自己所没有的东西)”可知,他坚信,你应该对已拥有的东西心怀感激,而不要总是纠结于自己所没有的东西。
3.考查细节理解。根据最后一段“When something so life-changing happens to a close family member, it puts life into perspective and makes you thankful for the little things in life. Meanwhile, all the little things that used to stress us out suddenly don’t matter in the large scheme of things. Anything can happen, and finding things that make you happy every day is essential.(当自己的亲近家人身上发生了改变生活的事情时,这会让你正确看待生活,让你对生活中的小事心怀感激。
1.Many people today are looking for clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. / Garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. 2.A broader cultural reevaluation and sustainability. 3.Many smaller fashion brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to gain popularity.
According to the passage, Many smaller brands slow down production and even offer pre-orders to avoid waste. 4.I will apply craftsmanship in home decoration. I’ll pick natural materials like bamboo and stone. Then, I’ll use hand-carving and weaving techniques to make unique decorations, adding a natural and artistic touch to my home.
根据第一段中“But today many people are now seeking something better: clothes that last, are made with intention, and carry real meaning. (但如今许多人正在寻找更好的东西:耐穿的、用心制作的、承载真正意义的衣服。)”以及第三段中“In contrast to the uniformity promoted by fast fashion, many consumers are turning toward garments that carry culture, family stories, and time-honored skills. (与快时尚推崇的千篇一律不同,如今许多消费者转而选择承载文化底蕴、家族故事与传统精湛工艺的服饰。)”可知,如今许多人正在寻找耐穿、用心制作且具有真正意义的衣服,或者寻找承载文化、家庭故事和传统技艺的服装。
2.考查细节理解。根据第三段中“The appreciation for craftsmanship is not limited to personal practices, but extends to a broader cultural reevaluation of fashion traditions. (对手工艺的欣赏不仅限于个人实践,还扩展到对时尚传统的更广泛的文化重新评估。)”以及第四段中“Sustainability is another major driver of the revival. (可持续性是这一复兴的另一个主要驱动因素。)”可知,除了个人兴趣,更广泛的文化重新评估和可持续性也是促进手工艺回归的因素。
3.考查细节理解。句意:许多小型时尚品牌放慢生产速度,甚至提供预订服务是为了获得人气。根据第四段中“To avoid waste, many of them slow down production, skip the constant trend-chasing, and even offer pre-orders, which is gaining popularity for letting people wear something real. (为了避免浪费,它们中的许多品牌放慢了生产速度,不再盲目追逐潮流,甚至提供预订服务——这种做法正越来越受欢迎,因为它让人们能够穿上真正有意义的衣物。)”可知,小型品牌这样做的主要目的是为了避免浪费,而不是为了获得人气。因此原句中的“to gain popularity”是错误的,应改为“to avoid waste”。
1.They were busy taking photos of the paintings without appreciating them carefully. 2.He realized he had prioritized sharing the moment over living it. 3.For the best memories, the author has decided to keep records of the meaningful moments. Because the author decides to put down his phone and experience meaningful moments personally instead of recording them. 4.(open) Yes, I agree. Many people focus on taking photos to post online instead of enjoying moments. Phones distract us from real feelings and communication, which keeps us away from the beautiful world around us.
根据第一段“They were taking photos — dozens of them — framing the artwork and adjusting angles, all without pausing to actually see the painting itself.(他们不停地拍照,拍了几十张,对着画作构图取景、调整角度,却全然没有停下来好好欣赏这幅画作本身。)”
根据第三段“That night, I realized I had prioritized sharing the moment over living it.(那天晚上,我意识到我只顾着分享当下,却忘了用心感受当下。)”
根据最后一段“So, I have made a promise to myself: to put my phone down more often and be fully present in those times that make life meaningful.(于是我对自己许下承诺:多放下手机,全身心沉浸在那些赋予生活意义的美好时刻里。)”
1.After dinner, they would sit together, laptops open, phones away, no excuses. 2.Because they had both seen their mates face similar challenges and wanted to bring this experience to a broader group. 3.The co-working sessions helped to remove the block that made writing frightening. Because the sessions helped lower the barriers, not remove them completely. 4.I would break large tasks into smaller daily goals and use the Pomodoro Technique, working for 25 minutes then taking a 5-minute break. This structure keeps me focused and prevents burnout.
根据第二段的句子“So, we made a pact (约定): After dinner, we would sit together, laptops open, phones away, no excuses. It was the fuel I needed to finally start writing. (于是,我们约定:晚饭后,我们坐在一起,打开笔记本电脑,远离手机,没有借口。这是我最终开始写作所需要的动力。)”可知,两人约定,晚饭后,坐在一起,远离手机,打开笔记本电脑写作。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段的句子“Sachin and I had both seen our mates face similar challenges and wanted to bring this experience to a broader group. (Sachin和我都看到我们的同学面临着类似的挑战,于是想把这种经验推广到更多人。)”可知,他们创建互助写作小组的原因是因为他们都看到自己的同学面临着类似的挑战,并希望将这种经历带给更广泛的群体。
3.细节理解题。根据最后一段的句子“Our experience showed us that accountability and a shared sense of purpose can lower the barriers that make writing so scary. (我们的经验表明,责任感和共同的目标感能够降低让写作变得可怕的障碍。)”可知,原文表述是“lower the barriers (降低障碍)”,而非“remove the block (消除障碍)”,程度上有差异,且前文提到“Writing never got easy(写作从来都不容易)”,说明障碍并未完全消除。因此“remove the block”表述错误,应该在remove the block下画横线。
I would break large tasks into smaller daily goals and use the Pomodoro Technique, working for 25 minutes then taking a 5-minute break. This structure keeps me focused and prevents burnout.

I’m glad to hear you’re attending the UN Youth Forum. For a sustainable future, I think two skills stand out.
First, the ability to innovate with green technologies is crucial. As climate change worsens, we need creative solutions like renewable energy advancements and waste-recycling systems to reduce environmental harm. Second, cross-cultural communication skill matters a lot. Global sustainability issues know no borders, and only by working together with people from different backgrounds can we share ideas and implement effective actions worldwide.
Hope these ideas help you. Good luck with your speech!
Yours,
Li Hua

1.Aristotle’s observation is that actions pushed to their extreme turn into disasters. 2.Quitting is necessary for growth because by ending something we create space for something new to grow. 3.
Failing at the right thing takes us further from where we are meant to be.
It is persisting at the wrong thing that takes us further from where we are meant to be. 4.When I find myself stuck in a subject I’ve tried hard to improve but constantly fail, instead of pushing blindly, I will switch to a learning method that fits me better, or explore another field where my talents can truly shine.(答案不唯一)
根据第一段“But as Aristotle observed over 2,000 years ago, actions pushed to their extreme turn into disasters. (但正如亚里士多德在2000多年前观察到的那样,行动推向极端就会变成灾难。)”可知,亚里士多德的观点是:行为被推向极端就会演变成灾难。
2.考查细节理解。根据第五段“By ending something, we create space for something new to grow. We need to exit the things that don’t work anymore to be able to enter the ones that make sense for who we are today. (通过结束某事,我们为新事物的成长创造了空间。我们需要退出那些不再起作用的事情,才能进入适合当下自己的事情。)”可知,放弃对于成长是必要的,因为通过终结某件事,我们为新事物的成长创造空间。
3.考查细节理解。根据第四段“When we fail at the right thing, persistence makes sense. We learn, adjust, and try again. But when we persist with the wrong thing, every bit of effort takes us further from where we are meant to be.
1.Seeing that many plastic bottles littered the parks and sidewalks. 2.It helps people explore hidden places like small local parks and gardens in their own cities. 3.
According to the passage, friends laughed a little, and even Mark’s parents thought he should just give up; so this part With encouragement from his friends and parents is false. 4.First, spot a problem you care about. Then, experiment boldly or create. Learn relevant skills if needed, persist through setbacks, and ask friends or communities for help to keep trying despite difficulties to turn your ideas into real solutions.
根据第二段“He loved biking around his neighbourhood but grew upset seeing that many plastic bottles littered the parks and sidewalks. (他喜欢在社区里骑自行车,但看到公园和人行道上到处都是塑料瓶,他很沮丧。)” 可知,让Mark沮丧的是看到公园和人行道上有很多塑料瓶。故填 Seeing that many plastic bottles littered the parks and sidewalks.
根据第五段“what if we could build a real - world app that helps people explore hidden places in their own cities? She gathered friends, learned some basic programming, and together they created an app that maps small local parks and gardens few people knew about. (如果我们能开发一个现实世界的应用程序,帮助人们探索他们自己城市里隐藏的地方会怎么样呢?她召集了朋友们,学习了一些基本的编程知识,然后他们一起开发了一个应用程序,该程序可以绘制出很少有人知道的当地小公园和花园的地图。)” 可知,Sally和她朋友创建的应用程序帮助人们探索自己城市里像小公园和花园这样隐藏的地方。故填It helps people explore hidden places like small local parks and gardens in their own cities.
根据第三段“Friends laughed a little, and even Mark’s parents thought he should just give up. (朋友们有点嘲笑,甚至Mark的父母都认为他应该放弃。)” 可知,Mark并没有得到朋友和父母的鼓励,所以“With encouragement from his friends and parents” 这部分是错误的。故填According to the passage, friends laughed a little, and even Mark’s parents thought he should just give up; so this part With encouragement from his friends and parents is false.
First, spot a problem you care about. Then, experiment boldly or create. Learn relevant skills if needed, persist through setbacks, and ask friends or communities for help to keep trying despite difficulties to turn your ideas into real solutions.
1.The need to be recognized as an independent scientist. 2.The author would spend three months in a collaborating lab to obtain specialised training. 3.The adviser considered the author’s experience in the lab a groundbreaking success because publishable data had been produced. It is because the author had acquired the collaborating skills by working with others there so that the adviser considered the author’s experience in the lab a groundbreaking success. 4.In the story, success in becoming an independent scientist was ultimately achieved through collaboration, adaptive learning, and resilience in the face of setbacks. From the story, we learn that while independence is initially idealised and pursued passionately, true independence often involves recognizing the value of collaboration and learning than to seek help.
根据第二段“As I began designing experiments, my committee members warned me about the challenges I would face. But my need for independence drove me to push forward with my research plan. (当我开始设计实验时,我的委员会成员警告我,我将面临的挑战。但是我对独立的需求驱使我推进我的研究计划)”可知,一开始,是作者对独立的需求驱使作者推进这个研究计划。故答案为:The need to be recognized as an independent scientist.
根据倒数第二段“My adviser and I devised (想出) a somewhat unusual solution: I would spend three months in a collaborating (合作的) lab to obtain specialised training. (我的导师和我想出了一个有点不同寻常的解决方案:我将在一个合作实验室里待上三个月,接受专门培训)”可知,在反复的失败之后,导师和作者的解决方案是,作者将花三个月的时间在合作实验室接受专门培训。故答案为:The author would spend three months in a collaborating lab to obtain specialised training.
根据最后一段“My adviser saw this experience as a groundbreaking success, emphasising the collaborating skills I acquired. A few months later, when I repeated the experiment in my home lab, I produced more publishable data.(我的导师认为这段经历是一次开创性的成功,强调了我获得的合作技能。几个月后,当我在家里的实验室里重复这个实验时,我得到了更多可发表的数据)”可知,导师认为作者在实验室的经历是一次开创性的成功,这是因为作者通过与他人合作获得了合作技能,而不是因为产生了可发表的数据。故答案:The adviser considered the author’s experience in the lab a groundbreaking success because publishable data had been produced.
It is because the author had acquired the collaborating skills by working with others there so that the adviser considered the author’s experience in the lab a groundbreaking success.
In the story, success in becoming an independent scientist was ultimately achieved through collaboration, adaptive learning, and resilience in the face of setbacks. From the story, we learn that while independence is initially idealised and pursued passionately, true independence often involves recognizing the value of collaboration and learning when to seek help.
1.Why did the author believe he didn’t need a to-do list before he turned 25? (no more than 10 words)
2.What does the underlined phrase mean?(no more than 3 words)
3.What kind of person is the author’s mother?(no more than 10words)
4.When did the author turn to “a second mind” for help?(no more than 10 words)
5.How have you benefited from some advice given by a family member? Please explain with an example.(no more than 20 words)
1.(Because) he didn't aim to be anywhere Or: (Because) he aimed to be nowhere. 2.Realized/Became aware. 3.She is good at planning her day. 4.When he seemed to lose his first mind. 5.Mom told me to plan study; I improved grades.
根据第七段“Up until a few years ago, I didn’t aim to be anywhere. And in order to be nowhere, one does not need a to-do list as a guide.(直到几年前,我都没有给自己设定任何目标。而要想处于毫无作为的状态,根本不需要制定任何待办事项清单来作为指引。)”可知,作者在25岁之前根本就没打算去任何地方,不需要待办事项清单。故答案为(Because) he didn't aim to be anywher Or: (Because) he aimed to be nowhere.
根据划线词后文“the fact that I didn’t want to waste any more time(我不想再浪费任何时间了)”可知,作者意识到自己不想浪费时间,故划线词意思是“意识到”。 Realized/Became aware.
根据倒数第六段“I grew up seeing my mother firmly in charge of her day. She knew — and still knows — where she needed to be at every moment, in every detail. She may not be good at singing, acting, or sports. But she is excellent at planning. Every day she writes a list.(我从小就看到母亲时刻掌控着自己的生活。她清楚——而且现在依然清楚——自己在每一刻、每一个细节中该做些什么。她或许不擅长唱歌、表演或运动。但她非常擅长规划。每天她都会列一个清单)”可知,作者的母亲擅长规划日常。故答案为She is good at planning her day.
根据倒数第五段“Sometimes, it seems as though it’s the rainy season in my mind, flooded with confused and distracting thoughts that lead nowhere. I need a second mind — now!(有时候,我的脑海里仿佛正值雨季,充斥着混乱又扰人的思绪,却毫无方向。我现在就需要一个“第二大脑”!)”可知,作者思绪混乱时求助。故答案为When he seemed to lose his first mind.
Mom told me to plan study; I improved grades.

Dear Jim,
I’m thrilled to receive your email asking about our school’s “When Sports Meet AI” event held last month. It was a truly eye-opening experience that showed me how technology is revolutionizing the world of sports.
We got hands-on experience with AI-powered fitness devices that analyzed our basketball shots in real time and gave personalized tips to improve our accuracy. We also attended an engaging lecture on how AI helps professional athletes optimize their training and avoid career-threatening injuries.
For me, this activity completely transformed my perception of artificial intelligence. I used to associate AI with science fiction, but now I see it as a practical tool that can enhance every aspect of our daily lives, even something as simple as playing sports.

I’m glad to hear that you want to take part in the UN’s initiative for global teenagers. Here’s my advice.
I suggest focusing on environmental protection. As we know, the environment is facing serious problems, which affect everyone’s life. If we can raise awareness about it and encourage more people to take action, it will make a big difference. Another idea is to promote cultural exchange. We live in a world where different cultures coexist. By sharing our cultures and learning from each other, we can build a more harmonious global community.

Dear Kate,
It’s a great idea to make a collection of our English essays. This compilation will surely be a wonderful showcase of our English learning achievements. I have a suggestion that might enhance the overall quality of this collection — adding relevant pictures.
Pictures can play a vital role in making the essays more engaging. For example, if an essay is about a travel experience, a vivid picture of the described scenery can bring the story to life, helping readers better visualize the places and emotions.
I’m quite interested in contributing to this project. As I have been learning drawing for years and have a good command of various drawing techniques, I believe I can create pictures that perfectly match the themes of the essays.
Looking forward to your reply.

One possible version:
Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I’m writing to express that my predilection goes to “Guess who I am”, which capitalizes on an object clause to signal its potential contents.
The column will serve as a catalyst for closer bonds between students. Redoubling efforts to boost academic performance, we pay little heed to other classmates’ personalities, hobbies, strengths, and even aspirations. Such an inviting column, adopting a “description and guess” approach, must expose everyone to others’ characteristics, thus strengthening mutual understanding. More importantly, more friendships will be forged, since the column enables us to befriend someone on the same wavelength.
This eye-catching column, I’m firmly convinced, won’t fail to grant the whole class a harmonious atmosphere.
Yours,
Li Hua
