Caden, a fourth grader, began to doubt the tooth fairy’s existence after noticing that the amount of money he received for each lost tooth was inconsistent — his first tooth, $100, but the following ones, less. His distrust drove him to complain to his mother Ashley: “I KNOW IT’S YOU MUM.”
Eager to maintain the magic, Ashley sent an email to a “tooth fairy” address she had made up, asking the tooth fairy to respond and prove her son wrong. Dr Miller, a dentist in Seattle, received the email. Years earlier, her email address was created with the nickname “The Tooth Fairy” for her dental school applications. It had, by chance, turned into an email address that parents used to contact the Tooth Fairy. Dr Miller, having received thousands of similar emails over two decades, responded to Ashley’s request with a warm, comforting note to Caden. In this way, she helped maintain the magic for children and families all over the world.
In 2008, six-year-old Piya was on vacation with her family in Singapore when her front tooth fell into a storm drain (排水沟) outside the hotel restaurant. Seeing his daughter in tears, Piya’s father sent an email to the Tooth Fairy: “My tooth fell into a storm drain. I hope you’ve already taken it.” Surprisingly, Dr Miller replied quickly, “Dear Piya, good luck! The Tooth Fairy is always watching over you, and I wish you a happy growing up.” That simple act of kindness turned Piya’s sadness into joy.
Seventeen years later, after having her wisdom teeth removed, Piya reflected on her childhood and the email she had received from the Tooth Fairy. Now 23, she wrote back, expressing her gratitude and recalling the comforting words from all those years ago: “17 years ago, you wished me a happy growing up, and now, I’m excited to report that it definitely has been.”
A few minutes later, Dr Miller responded:
Thank you for reminding me that kindness, no matter how small, leaves a lasting impact on the world. I REALLY needed that reminder today.
Love,
The Tooth Fairy

Imagine two movie scenes: a young girl alone in a dark forest, and a lost baby dog reuniting with its owner. What music will you choose to go with it? You probably would choose very different music for each — tense ones for fear, soft ones for comfort. Why does music work this way? It shapes our feelings not just in our minds, but in our bodies too.
Studies show music directly changes our heartbeat, breathing, and even temperature. Fast dance music speeds up our heart rate, while slow tunes relax our muscles. No wonder people listen to fast music to exercise and slow songs to relax. But most importantly, what’s happening in the body is what’s happening in the brain. We experience music in time, second by second. Our brains track its flow, predicting what will come next based on the “grammar” of music we learn from our culture — how notes, harmonies, and rhythms “should” go, which is key to how music stirs emotions.
Different scales and sounds send clear emotional signals. As the C Major Scale and C Natural Minor Scale show, major keys often feel happy and bright, while minor keys sound sad and blue. High notes bring excitement, and low ones suggest danger; fast beats feel fun, and slow tempos feel thoughtful. Even instruments matter: distorted guitars sound angry, while flutes feel light.
Music can also influence people easily and make them feel the same mood. Our brains developed to mirror others’ emotions, so we feel a singer’s joy or pain as our own. This is why even without sound we can still read emotion in a musician’s body language.
Still, our responses to music aren’t the same for everyone. Taste is shaped by culture, friends, and even our mood that day. A song that makes one person cry might uplift another. As philosopher Schopenhauer wrote, “The inexpressible depth of music is due to the fact that it reproduces all the emotions of our innermost being.” It speaks to our deepest part of ourselves, reflecting our confusion, complexity (复杂性), and joy. Just like in a movie, being human means we all have soundtrack to our lives.
8. Why does the author mention two movie scenes at the beginning?
A. To raise a question. B. To lead into the central idea.
C. To encourage imagination. D. To describe a phenomenon.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Music patterns. B. The background of music.
C. Music types. D. The impacts of music.
10. Which of the following elements are most suitable for sports background music?
A. Major keys and high notes. B. Major keys and low notes.
C. Minor keys and high notes. D. Minor keys and low notes.
11. What can be inferred in the last paragraph?
A. Music comes from personal experiences. B. Music taste reflects a person’s uniqueness.
C. Music complexity helps uplift people’s spirits. D. Music is an optional way to achieve happiness.
D
The brain doesn’t gradually fall asleep. Instead, it reaches a tipping point at which it rapidly passes from wakefulness to sleep — a discovery that could improve our treatment of sleep disorders.
“Although sleep is so crucial to our life, how the brain falls asleep has been a mystery,” says Nir Grossman at Imperial College London. Grossman and his colleagues have designed a new framework for studying how the brain behaves while we fall asleep using electroencephalography (EEG) data.
This study, which records electrical activity in the brain, indicates sleep stages and wakefulness. The team modelled 4.7 EEG signals in a mathematical space where each data point had positions as if it were a point on a map. This allowed the team to plot brain activity during wakefulness and track it as it moved towards what they call the sleep-onset zone, where brain activity shows the second stage of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.
They applied this framework to EEG data collected from more than 1000 people as they fell asleep, measuring the distance between brain activity and sleep onset. On average, this distance remained largely unchanged until 10 minutes before sleep and then dropped sharply in the last few minutes. This tipping point — which occurred an average of 4.5 minutes before sleep — is the exact moment when the brain changes from wakefulness to sleep, says Junheng Li, also at Imperial College London. This suggests the transition from wakefulness to sleep “is a drastic change that occurs in the last few minutes”, says Grossman.
By understanding this transition, we may be able to identify how they differ in those with difficulty in sleep, says Laura Lewis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, potentially leading to new treatments for the condition.
12. Why did Grossman carry out the experiment?
A. To figure out the mystery of the brain. B. To explore how the brain changes to sleep.
C. To prove that sleep is a gradual process. D. To compare different stages of NREM sleep.
13. What is a use of the new framework?
A. It makes the process of EEG data collection easier.
B. It shows the changes in brain structure before sleep.
C. It enables researchers to track brain activity during transition.
D. It provides a new way to predict people’s emotional responses.
14. The underlined word “drastic” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. predictable B. complex C. regular D. sudden
15. What is the potential significance of this research?
A. It proves that sleep is essential to life.
B. It replaces traditional EEG techniques.
C. It helps develop new treatments for sleeplessness.
D. It explains why people dream during NREM sleep.

Progression, Not Perfection
With the rise of AI and technological advancements, life has become easier. ____16____ The feeling of not moving forward can become a problem for our health. Thus, focusing on “Progression” rather than “Perfection” becomes important.
Progression is not just about moving forward, always achieving, or working non-stop. It is about learning and growing, just like how muscles get stronger when we exercise and how the mind gets better at thinking when we face problems. ____17____ Here are three main ways we can see progress.
1. Physical Progression
The most common kind of progress is physical. Doing regular exercise can make you feel happier, help your brain work better, and keep your heart healthy. But the real benefits come from slowly getting stronger, faster, and more skilled. For example, if you run a little farther each week or lift slightly heavier weights, your body learns to deal with the challenge. ____18____
2. Behavioral Progression
Progression also plays a crucial role in our daily behavior. In clinical psychology, there’s a technique called behavioral activation that helps people recover from depression by encouraging them to connect with activities that matter to them. Simply setting a goal is not effective on its own. ____19____ For example, if someone wants to improve their social life, instead of committing to hosting a large gathering, they could start by reaching out to a friend for a coffee. These little steps help raise their energy and motivation, leading to real progress over time.
3. Cognitive (认知的) Progression
____20____ Our minds can get stuck worrying about the same things over and over. Trying out new ideas or thinking about different possibilities can make you feel happier and more creative. Studies show that exploring new thoughts helps your brain learn, plan for the future, and become stronger in problem-solving.
A. Just trying new things is not enough.
B. However, this ease can make us feel lazy and stuck.
C. Instead, it’s important to take small, manageable steps.
D. Thinking in new ways is another important kind of progress.
E. These improvements stay with you even after your workouts.
F. True progress means looking for perfect action in all pursuits.
G. Real progression happens when we learn new skills for the future.

根据第三段“In 2008, six-year-old Piya was on vacation with her family in Singapore when her front tooth fell into a storm drain (排水沟) outside the hotel restaurant.
根据文末Dr Miller的回复“Thank you for reminding me that kindness, no matter how small, leaves a lasting impact on the world. I REALLY needed that reminder today. Love, The Tooth Fairy. (谢谢你提醒我,善意无论多么微小,都会对世界产生长久的影响。今天我真的很需要这份提醒。爱你的,牙仙。)”由此推断,Piya的回信带给了Dr Miller鼓励。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“Dr Miller, having received thousands of similar emails over two decades, responded to Ashley’s request with a warm, comforting note to Caden. In this way, she helped maintain the magic for children and families all over the world. (二十多年来,米勒博士收到了成千上万封类似邮件,她按照阿什利的请求给卡登写了一封温暖安慰的回信。通过这种方式,她帮助全世界的孩子和家庭留住这份奇妙幻想。)”通读全文可知,米勒博士借用“牙仙”邮箱回信,用一封封信件守护孩子们心中的魔法,传递善意与温暖。C选项“来自牙仙的信件传递童真魔法与善意”能够概括全文主旨。
C
B 9. D 10. A 11. B
根据第一段“Imagine two movie scenes: a young girl alone in a dark forest, and a lost baby dog reuniting with its owner. What music will you choose to go with it? You probably would choose very different music for each — tense ones for fear, soft ones for comfort. Why does music work this way? It shapes our feelings not just in our minds, but in our bodies too.(设想两个电影场景:一个小女孩独自在漆黑的森林里,一只走失的小狗和主人重逢。你会选择什么配乐?两个场景会选用截然不同的音乐 —— 紧张音乐烘托恐惧,舒缓音乐传递慰藉。音乐为何能起到这样的效果?它不仅在思想上,也在身体层面塑造我们的情绪。)”作者借助电影配乐的例子,引出下文关于音乐影响情绪这一核心话题。由此可知,开篇提及两个电影场景是为了引入中心观点。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Studies show music directly changes our heartbeat, breathing, and even temperature. Fast dance music speeds up our heart rate, while slow tunes relax our muscles. No wonder people listen to fast music to exercise and slow songs to relax. But most importantly, what’s happening in the body is what’s happening in the brain. We experience music in time, second by second. Our brains track its flow, predicting what will come next based on the “grammar” of music we learn from our culture — how notes, harmonies, and rhythms “should” go, which is key to how music stirs emotions.(研究表明,音乐会直接改变我们的心跳、呼吸,甚至体温。
根据第二段“No wonder people listen to fast music to exercise and slow songs to relax.(难怪人们锻炼时听快节奏音乐,放松时听慢歌)”和第三段“As the C Major Scale and C Natural Minor Scale show, major keys often feel happy and bright, while minor keys sound sad and blue. High notes bring excitement, and low ones suggest danger; fast beats feel fun, and slow tempos feel thoughtful. (正如C大调音阶与C自然小调音阶所展示的那样,大调往往带给人愉悦明朗之感,而小调听起来忧伤低沉。高音带来激动的情绪,低音暗示危险;快节拍让人觉得欢快,慢节奏引人深思。)”可知,运动背景音乐需要振奋、充满活力的效果,大调搭配高音符合需求。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Still, our responses to music aren’t the same for everyone. Taste is shaped by culture, friends, and even our mood that day. A song that makes one person cry might uplift another.(然而每个人对音乐的反应并不相同。音乐品味受文化、朋友、当日心情影响。一首歌令一个人落泪,却可能鼓舞另一个人。)”可推断,音乐品味能够体现一个人的独特性。
B 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据第二段中的““Although sleep is so crucial to our life, how the brain falls asleep has been a mystery,” says Nir Grossman at Imperial College London. Grossman and his colleagues have designed a new framework for studying how the brain behaves while we fall asleep using electroencephalography (EEG) data.(伦敦帝国理工学院的尼尔·格罗斯曼说:“尽管睡眠对我们的生活至关重要,但大脑如何入睡一直是个谜。”格罗斯曼及其同事利用脑电图(EEG)数据设计了一个新框架,用于研究我们入睡时大脑的活动状态。)” 可知,Grossman开展实验是为探究大脑如何转入睡眠状态。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The team modelled 4.7 EEG signals in a mathematical space where each data point had positions as if it were a point on a map. This allowed the team to plot brain activity during wakefulness and track it as it moved towards what they call the sleep-onset zone, where brain activity shows the second stage of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.(该团队在数学空间内对脑电图信号建模,每个数据点的位置就如同地图上的坐标。这使团队能够绘制清醒状态下的大脑活动,并追踪大脑活动向他们所说的睡眠起始区移动的过程,在该区域大脑活动呈现非快速眼动睡眠第二阶段特征。)” 可知,新框架能够让研究者追踪大脑在状态转变期间的活动。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“This tipping point — which occurred an average of 4.5 minutes before sleep — is the exact moment when the brain changes from wakefulness to sleep, says Junheng Li, also at Imperial College London.(伦敦帝国理工学院的李俊恒(音译)表示:这个临界点 —— 平均发生在入睡前4.5分钟 —— 正是大脑从清醒状态转入睡眠状态的那一刻)”以及“This suggests the transition from wakefulness to sleep “is a drastic change that occurs in the last few minutes”, says Grossman.(格罗斯曼表示,这表明从清醒到睡眠的转变是发生在最后几分钟内的drastic变化。)”
根据第五段中的“By understanding this transition, we may be able to identify how they differ in those with difficulty in sleep, says Laura Lewis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, potentially leading to new treatments for the condition.(麻省理工学院的劳拉·刘易斯称,理解这种转变,我们或许能发现睡眠困难人群的差异,有望为该病症研发新疗法。)”

B 17. G 18. E 19. C 20. D
