One year later, a film director saw me in one of our plays and asked me to be in her movie. I said yes, and that’s how everything began. At first I thought making a film would be difficult because I was the youngest person there. But to my surprise, I felt very calm. I didn’t have a big part like the main star, but I still had a great time. Since then, I’ve done a few more films. I just finished a big film, so I’m taking a break now. I’m practicing horse riding, something I learned last year in an acting class. People often ask me for advice about acting. I always tell them that experience is the most important thing. Her love was further developed by a schoolteacher who encouraged her to pursue (追求) science, a trip to Kennedy Space Center during a family vacation, and visits to the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which University of Central Florida (UCF) manages for the U. S. National Science Foundation. Today, she is earning a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at UCF. Her current area of research is 3D printing. “My biggest goal is to be able to work on space missions, such as the Artemis moon mission,” she says. “I want to ensure astronauts’ (宇航员的) safety while exploring other planetary surfaces.” Latorre-Suarez decided to study at UCF because of its excellent and supportive faculty As an excellent student, she had plenty of choices. “UCF has amazing teachers, such as Dr. (Seetha) Raghavan, who are always willing to help their students to achieve their goals,” she says. “UCF has given me the opportunity to grow as a professional and as a person.” Latorre-Suarez credits Raghavan with her pursuit of space-related research at UCF. Together they pursued 3D printing and later determined they could probably use an autonomous application (独立应用程序) method for space missions. It is something Latorre-Suarez continues to work on today because she knows it will make a difference. “Exploring space is important because we can get many answers that we will not be able to get here on Earth,” she says. “We can get answers about the history of our solar system and understand its formation. Through these answers, we will be able to expand (增强) technologies that will benefit us here on Earth as well as contribute to further exploration.” 24. Johan van Hulst was known for his great efforts during World War II, saving hundreds of Jewish children, but he was haunted (忧心忡忡的) by not being able to do more. In 1940, the year Nazi Germany invaded (入侵) the Netherlands, Van Hulst headed a college in Amsterdam. The school he was running was next to a Jewish daycare center. When the Nazis took children from their parents, it was where the kids under the age of 12 went. When space ran out there, the Germans asked Johan van Hulst to house children in his school. He came up with an idea along with two people at the daycare center. If, for example, 20 children were transferred to his school, he’d only list 10 or 15, and the unregistered kids were then taken to safety. More than 600 children were saved. Israel’s Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in 1973 recognized Van Hulst as a “Righteous Among the Nations” — a title for non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust. In 2012, Israeli Prime Minister (总理) Benjamin Netanyahu honored Van Hulst during a state visit to the Netherlands. That year, Van Hulst’s heroism was adapted into a film titled “Sussman.” Johan van Hulst died at the age of 107. Today, Amsterdam’s National Holocaust Museum stands at the site of the college. Emile Schrijver, who directs the museum, says Johan van Hulst always spoke of what he couldn’t do. “I was never a hero. I had to live the rest of my life with the knowledge that I’d only been able to save around 600 children rather than 700, 800, 900, or 1,000 children.” Schrijver says Johan van Hulst’s long life allowed many generations to learn by his example — that even under the worst conditions, there’s always an option to choose right over wrong. 28. What did Van Hulst do for the Jewish children during World War Ⅱ? A. He hid them in his school secretly. B. He set up a daycare center for them. C. He helped them to find their parents. D. He managed to transport them to safety. 29. How did Yad Vashem honor Van Hulst? A. By awarding him a title. B. By making a movie about him. C. By arranging a state visit to his hometown. D. By inviting him to meet with the Prime Minister. 30. What do we know about Van Hulst from his words in paragraph 4? A. He lived all alone in later life. B. He had a deep love for his school. C. He regretted not saving more children. D. He called on the public to recognize other heroes. 31. What does Schrijver think of Van Hulst? A. He needs more national attention. B. He serves as an example to everyone. C. He cares very little about his own name. D. He offers young people a chance to do right. D 29. A 30. C 31. 根据第二段中“If, for example, 20 children were transferred to his school, he’d only list 10 or 15, and the unregistered kids were then taken to safety. More than 600 children were saved.(例如,如果有20个孩子转到他的学校,他只会列出10或15个,然后将未注册的孩子带到安全的地方。600多名儿童获救)”可知,通过谎报人数,Van Hulst将未注册的犹太儿童转移到安全地带。故选D。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Israel’s Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in 1973 recognized Van Hulst as a “Righteous Among the Nations” — a title for non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust.(1973年,以色列的亚德瓦谢姆世界大屠杀纪念中心承认范·胡尔斯特为“国际义人”,这是对那些冒着生命危险从大屠杀中拯救犹太人的非犹太人的称号)”可知,为了表彰Van Hulst为拯救犹太儿童做出的贡献,Yad Vashem纪念馆授予了他“Righteous Among the Nations”称号。故选A。 根据第四段中“I was never a hero. I had to live the rest of my life with the knowledge that I’d only been able to save around 600 children rather than 700, 800, 900, or 1,000 children.(我从来不是英雄。在我的余生中,我不得不知道我只拯救了大约600个孩子,而不是700、800、900或1000个孩子)”可推知,Van Hulst终日自责没能拯救更多的犹太儿童。故选C。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Schrijver says Johan van Hulst’s long life allowed many generations to learn by his example — that even under the worst conditions, there’s always an option to choose right over wrong.(施里杰弗说,约翰·范·胡斯特漫长的一生让许多代人以他为榜样学习——即使在最糟糕的情况下,也总有选择正确而不是错误的机会)”可推知,Schrijver认为即使身处险境也心向光明的Van Hulst是我们所有人的榜样。故选B。 D A special architect-designer in southern Finland has returned to a lake with a snow shovel (雪铲) to draw a large animal on the ice for the sixth year in a row. On Dec. 4, Pasi Widgren drew a fox (狐狸) that measured about 295 feet on Lake Pitkajarvi, north of Helsinki. In previous years, he used a shovel to draw a bear and a bird always on the same lake. Widgren has drawn animals on local lakes every winter since 2016 near his home in a village not far from Lahti, a town of around 120,000 people. The drawings disappear when more snow falls. He hopes his artworks will “make people happy and encourage them to go out to hike in beautiful nature.” The idea for this form of art came “suddenly a couple of years ago when I realized I may have a special ability of coordination (协调) to do this kind of thing myself,” the 40-year-old told the Associated Press. When he reached Lake Pitkajarvi this month, he tested the thickness of the ice to make sure it was thick enough to walk and work on. At 4-6 inches thick, it was. “Of course, I had ice awls (冰锥) with me, around my neck,” in case the ice cracked and he had to save himself, Widgren said. “Then I drew the contours (轮廓) of the figure by walking and thinking at the same time so it matched my image of a fox and then I started to ‘draw’ using the snow shovel,” he explained. Four hours later, Widgren was done. “I walked to the top of the hills” about 150 feet above the lake “to look at the result, drank coffee and took some photos and videos as a memory of doing this.” The fox was less visible by Monday because it had snowed a little. “It’s also very important to me that making this kind of art doesn’t leave any marks on nature,” Widgren said. 32. In what way is Widgren different as an artist? A. He uses unique and high-tech art materials. B. He invites local people to paint with him. C. He draws animals on the ice of lakes. D. He paints the same fox every year. 33. What is Widgren’s purpose in creating his artworks? A. To become famous in his hometown. B. To call on people to get close to nature. C. To attract more visitors to his hometown. D. To improve his special ability of coordination. 34. What does the underlined word “cracked” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Formed. B. Covered. C. Disappeared. D. Broke. 35. What is significant to Widgren when making his art? A. Reducing environmental impact. B. Recording his art creation process. C. Making his artworks more visible. D. Being humorous and creative. C 33. B 34. D 35. 根据文章第一段“A special architect-designer in southern Finland has returned to a lake with a snow shovel (雪铲) to draw a large animal on the ice for the sixth year in a row.(芬兰南部的一位建筑师和设计师带着雪铲回到了湖泊,连续六年在冰上画一只大动物。)” 根据文章第二段“He hopes his artworks will “make people happy and encourage them to go out to hike in beautiful nature.”(他希望他的作品能‘让人们快乐,鼓励他们去美丽的大自然中徒步行走’。)” 根据划线词cracked前文的内容“Of course, I had ice awls (冰锥) with me, around my neck,(当然,我会带着冰锥,绕在我脖子上,)”和后文的内容“and he had to save himself(他必须自救)”可推知,Widgren创作时会携带冰锥,万一结冰的湖面裂开,可用于自救,故此处的划线词cracked与D项“Broke(裂开)”意思相近,故选D。 根据文章最后一段““It’s also very important to me that making this kind of art doesn’t leave any marks on nature,” Widgren said.( Widgren说道:‘对我来说,让这种艺术不给自然留下任何痕迹也是很重要的。’)” The sciences are traditionally viewed as a set of difficult subjects for students, but in reality they are increasingly important for you to understand. ____36____ And science may be an important part of your education up through college. Come on!” Emily led the way to her garden. “I go first!” Nora said as she kicked the ball towards Emily. “Is that all you got? Watch me, the champion, kick the ball!” For a second, Emily ran like the wind to the ball and kicked it so hard that it flew into the neighbor’s house. There was a loud sound. “Uh oh ... what did you do?” Nora spoke, feeling afraid. “I ... I do not know. Oh no! I think I broke my neighbor’s window,” Emily cried as she ran across her garden and hid behind a tree and Nora disappeared into the air. Fear was written all over Emily’s face. She saw the neighbor, Mr. Mason, pick up the pieces of glass. There was anger on his face. Emily ran away as fast as she could into a nearby park. She dared not return home anytime soon. The sun was setting and Emily returned home, keeping her eyes wide open for the neighbor. What if Mr. Mason was at her house? What if he knew it was her? Her heart was shaking as she cautiously (小心翼翼地) arrived home. Her mother saw the sweat on her face. She knew her daughter had done something wrong. “Emily, are you okay? Is something wrong? I can help you solve your problems, my dear,” Mother said. Emily held her mother’s hands and her eyes were wet with tears. “Mama, I did something bad, but it was unintentional. I broke Mr. Mason’s window by hitting the football so hard.” Mother listened to Emily patiently and she did not press further, although she was not pleased that Emily did not say sorry to Mr. Mason immediately. Then Mother held a pencil and began writing on a piece of white paper. Mother wrote a sentence on the paper and then she erased it and wrote something again. “Do you know why pencils have erasers?” Mother asked. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Emily walked up to the neighbor’s front door with weak legs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “Do you know why pencils have erasers?” Mother asked. Emily replied, “To erase our mistakes.” Mother answered, “Exactly! You see, I made a mistake when writing on the paper. But I can undoubtedly remove it with this eraser. Thus, when we make mistakes in life, we can and should fix them immediately. Then it is no longer a mistake.” Emily realized what her mother wanted to say. “Mama, you are right. Saying sorry is the only way I can make up for a mistake.” Saying this, Emily got up and went out of the house. Emily walked up to the neighbor’s front door with weak legs. Emily knocked on the door and Mr. Mason opened it. “Mr. Mason. I am sorry that I broke your window. Yes, it was me. I have realized my mistake and I am very sorry,” Emily said nervously. Mr. Mason saw her shoulders drop down and smiled. “Emily, I appreciate that you have gathered enough courage to come here to say sorry. You are a good girl and I forgive you. Now, would you like to come in for some cake?” Emily smiled, “Thank you Mr. Mason and if you don’t mind me asking, I would love to have a chocolate one!” 词汇激活 行为类 ①擦除:erase/raclage ②改正:fix/correct ③原谅:forgive/condone 情绪类 ①抱歉的:sorry/regretful ②紧张地:nervously/tensely 【点睛】【高分句型1】Thus, when we make mistakes in life, we can and should fix them immediately.(由when引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】Thank you Mr. Mason and if you don’t mind me asking, I would love to have a chocolate one!(由if引导的条件状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $英语周报,专业辅导英语学习。 Text one I think i've lost my keys, anna. One year later, a film director, sami, in one of our place, and asked me to be in her movie. I said yes, and that's how everything began. At first, I thought making a film would be difficult because I was the Youngest person there. But to my surprise, I felt very calm. I didn't have a big part like the main star, but I still had a great time. Since then, i've done a few more films. I just finished a big film, so i'm taking a break now. I'm practicing horse riding, something I learned last year. In an acting class, people often ask me for advice about acting. I always tell them that experiences the most important thing. There are many directors looking for new actors, so take every chance you get. B When Perla Latorre-Suarez was a child, she remembers holding her brother’s hand in the mountainous Orocovis region in Puerto Rico where she grew up and looking up a clear night as the International Space Station (ISS) flew overhead. “That day, my parents explained it to me; this is where all my interest in space came from,” Latorre-Suarez says. To describe how strict the teachers were at UCF. D. To prove the achievements of UCF in space exploration. 27. What does Latorre-Suarez think of exploring space? A. It is still limited. B. It develops fast. C. It helps humanity to move forward. D. It is a waste of both time and money. C We’re going to take a moment now to remember a man who lived a long life. D A special architect-designer in southern Finland has returned to a lake with a snow shovel (雪铲) to draw a large animal on the ice for the sixth year in a row. D.
