And if that weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance. After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar.com, a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources. Jason Swencki’s son, Kody, was diagnosed with type diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online children's forums(论坛) together most evenings. “Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,” says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. “They know what he's going through, so he doesn’t feel alone.” Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages. These days, Thomas’s main focus is his charity(慈善机构), Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can’t afford a diabetic’s huge expenses. Fight-it.org has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean. Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables. “Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,” says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar’s original members. 可知,diabeitcrockstar.com 是一个供糖尿病患者交流的网站。故选A。 根据文章第三段“Father and son visit the online children’s forums(论坛) together most evenings. “Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,” says Swencki, one of the site’s volunteers. “They know what he’s going through, so he doesn’t feel alone.” 可推断,Kody受益于diabeitcrockstar.com这个网站。 根据文章第五段“These days, Thomas’s main focus is his charity, Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can’t afford a diabetic’s huge expenses. Fight-it.org has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash. 故选A。 根据文章最后一段“Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables.(尽管有22名志愿者,Thomas经常每周为他的事业奉献50个小时,同时仍在做他的全职服务员工作。)”和“But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now.(但Christopher是我认识的唯一一个说人们现在需要帮助的人。)” C。 C Unlike humans, most insects don’t have brain systems to help them keep a sense of direction. “But they do have a system that allows them to tell what’s bright and what’s dark, and lets them know about the sky so that they can fly smoothly,” Yash Sondhi, a scientist says. If they mess that up, they start falling. Some theories have suggested that insects fly to light because they are blinded by artificial (人工的)light. Sondhi’s team put this question to the test. First, they hung a downward-facing light bulb(电灯泡)and in another test, they turned the light upward. In the first case, insects flew in an endless circle around the bulb. But when the light was pointed up, the insects often stopped flying and fell to the ground. What if the light is spread over a wide area? The researchers spread a large white sheet(床单)across the treetops and shone light on it. Surprisingly, the insects flew straight through the sheet, flying in the way they would during the day. The team then placed the sheet on the ground and shone light on it, and found all the insects flying over it turned upside down and fell to the ground. One of the most important things in flying is identifying the upward direction. Flying insects seem to depend on light to do this, keeping the brighter areas overhead and darker settings below them. “It’s not that insects are just attracted to light. It’s that they are balancing light and dark. But then you get an artificial environment that turns it over,” says Simon Sponberg, a physicist. The use of artificial light has risen quickly over the years, which may keep insects in a tiring circle or send them falling to their death. Along with influencing flying, too much light of this type can affect insects’ ability to find partners, search for food, and protect themselves against other animals. Losing dark sky areas is a serious problem. Unluckily, the situation is worsened by climate change and land loss. What’s comforting is that humans are changing the game through both personal and collective practices. Rebuilding dark sky areas including parks and communities will be beneficial to animals, plants and humans alike. 46. What mainly allows insects to fly safely? A. The ability to judge brightness. B. The cooperation within a group. C. The good control over their wings. D. The skill of seeing well in the dark 47. What can we infer from the light tests on insects? A. Insects can easily lose direction near the ground. B. The direction of light matters to insects’ flying. C. Insects fly much better in wide and bright areas D. The color of light helps insects tell the direction. 48. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “identifying” in Paragraph 4? A. Forgetting. B. Changing. C. Recognizing. D. Sharing. 49. What does the author try to stress by mentioning Simon’s words? A. Light benefits insects’ sense of balance. B. Insects are getting used to artificial light. C. Light pollution puts insects’ living at risk. D. Insects are poor at balancing flying and rest 50. What will the following paragraph probably talk about? A. The need to save wildlife. B. Ways to cut energy waste. C. The dangers of climate change. D. Efforts to protect the night sky. A 47. B 48. C 49. C 50. 根据第一段“But they do have a system that allows them to tell what’s bright and what’s dark, and lets them know about the sky so that they can fly smoothly,’ Yash Sondhi, a scientist says. 故选A。 根据文章第二段中的“First, they hung a downward-facing light bulb(电灯泡)and in another test, they turned the light upward. In the first case, insects flew in an endless circle around the bulb. But when the light was pointed up, the insects often stopped flying and fell to the ground.(首先,他们挂了一个朝下的灯泡,在另一个测试中,他们把灯转向上方。 根据文章第四段中的“One of the most important things in flying is identifying the upward direction.(飞行中最重要的事情之一是____向上的方向。)”以及后文“Flying insects seem to depend on light to do this, keeping the brighter areas overhead and darker settings below them.(飞行的昆虫似乎依赖光线来做这件事,保持头顶是亮区,下面是暗区。)” 根据文章第五段中Simon Sponberg的话“‘It’s not that insects are just attracted to light. It’s that they are balancing light and dark. But then you get an artificial environment that turns it over,’(“昆虫并不是仅仅被光线吸引。 以及后文“The use of artificial light has risen quickly over the years, which may keep insects in a tiring circle or send them falling to their death.Along with influencing flying, too much light of this type can affect insects’ ability to find partners, search for food, and protect themselves against other animals.(这些年来,人工光的使用迅速增加,这可能使昆虫陷入疲惫的循环,或使它们坠落致死。 根据文章最后一段“Rebuilding dark sky areas including parks and communities will be beneficial to animals, plants and humans alike.(重建包括公园和社区在内的黑暗天空区域将对动物、植物和人类都有益。)” Dr. Witt is the medical director for the newborn intensive care unit (重症监护室) at Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital. Witt sent his wife and four children to safety at a nearby church but decided to head for the hospital since he needed to make sure his patents were safe. “The only way I could get there was to get on my motorcycle,” said Witt because the parts of the roads were impassable to big vehicles.“I had to skirt around (绕开) where the fire had spread to,” he said. “The intensive care unit already smelled with a lot of smoke when I arrived and I wanted to move everybody to a parking lot without any fire in it,” Witt said. With the hospital staff’s help, Witt managed to evacuate all eight preemie babies (早产儿) into an ambulance that rushed them to a nearby hospital. Even though Witt had done more than enough, he decided to follow the ambulance to make sure the babies made it to the hospital. “At one point, there was some live wire on the freeway,” Witt said. After seeing the babies to safety, Witt went back to check on his home, which had been burned to the ground. But Witt is grateful that his family was unharmed. “We didn’t have any injuries; we were just happy to be together.” Now, Witt is being hailed as a hero for his bravery, but he insists he just did what be felt was right. “I feel like these babies are like my own babies,” Witt said.“I just wanted to make sure I was there to help them,” he said. 51. B Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes(糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. "But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now." 41. Which of the following is true of Christopher Thomas? A. He needs to go to the doctor every day. B. He studies the leading cause of diabetes C. He has a positive attitude to this disease. D. He encourages diabetics by writing articles. 42. Diabeitcrockstar.com was created for _________. A. diabetics to communicate B. volunteers to find jobs C. children to amuse themselves D. rock stars to share resources. 43. According to the text, Kody ______. A. feel lonely because of his illness B. benefits from diabeticrockstar.com C. helps create the online kid’s forums D. writes children’s stories online 44. What can we learn about Fight It? A. It helps the diabetics in financial difficulties. B. It organizes parties for volunteer once a year. C. It offers less expensive medicine to diabetics. D. It owns a well-known medical website. 45. The last paragraph suggests that Thomas ______. A. works full-time in a diabetes charity B. employs 22 people for his website C. helps diabetics in his own way D. ties to find a cure for diabetes C Unlike humans, most insects don’t have brain systems to help them keep a sense of direction. B. It was 2 a. m. on October 9th,2017, and Dr. Scott Witt was at home with his family when he received a call from the hospital telling him that they were going to evacuate (疏散) the patients because a deadly wildfire was spreading.
