I depended on my parents for food, clothes and even study. I was too shy to make friends and always stayed alone. I thought growing up was a terrible thing, because it meant I had to take more responsibility (责任).
When I was 13 years old, my parents sent me to a boarding school. At first, I was very sad and lonely. I couldn’t take care of myself. I didn’t know how to wash my clothes or make my bed. I even cried every night. But my teacher and roommates helped me a lot. They taught me how to do housework and encouraged me to make friends.

I also developed a good habit of studying hard. I realized that growing up is not terrible. It is a process of learning and changing. It means being independent, responsible and brave.
Last year, I took part in a speech competition. I was very nervous, but I tried my best. Although I didn’t win the first prize, I became more confident. This experience taught me that growing up means facing challenges bravely and never giving up.
Now I am 14 years old. I am no longer the little boy who was afraid of everything. I am independent, responsible and brave. I know that my growing-up journey is still going on. I will keep working hard and face every challenge with a smile. I believe that I will grow into a better person.

Hey kids! Sleep is important! You might have heard this before. Scientists found out that sleep helps you grow strong and keeps you from getting sick. And guess what? Sleep also works on your grades.
The scientist Grossman and his team wanted to see how sleep helped students do in school. He asked 100 kids from his class to wear a special wristband (腕带) called Fitbit. This cool thing could tell how long they slept and if they woke up a lot during the night. The students wore these wristbands all term long, and at the end, the scientists looked at their sleep information.
They found some interesting things. Kids who tossed and turned (翻来覆去) a lot at night didn’t do well in their tests. It was also true for kids without enough sleep. ★ Sleeping more or less just the night before the test has no influence on your grades. What really mattered was sleeping the same hours every night for a week or even a month before the test. “That means a student who sleeps seven hours every night will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one night and 6.5 another night,” Grossman said. This was really unexpected!
How long you sleep, how well you sleep, and sleeping for the same hours every night together make a big difference to the students’ test scores. And it seems especially important for boys. Grossman’s team was not sure of the reason. But boys who didn’t sleep well or slept at different times did worse on tests than girls who had the same sleep problems. These findings show that sleep is really important for doing well in school. And, knowing how to get good sleep can make a big difference!

A. But here’s a big surprise.
B. And we know little about those.
C. While sleeping well comes first.
D. So we should sleep as long as we can every night.
14. Which of the following is TRUE about the research finding?
A. Girls always sleep better than boys.
B. Poor sleep influences boys’ test results more greatly than girls’.
C. Scientists have known why boys are more influenced by sleep problems.
D. Sleeping longer is the only key to good grades.
15. What would the author probably write about after the last paragraph?

Leo is a person who loves painting. But an accident made his finger joints (关节) hurt. The doctor told him that if he continued to paint, it might cause more pain to his fingers, so he had to give up this hobby.

Everyone has a growing-up journey. Mine is full of changes, challenges and happiness. I used to be a little boy who was afraid of everything.
