Du Mengran is a Chinese deep sea scientist. Though she looks like a girl next door, her work is amazing. Du has worked at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院) for twelve years. During this time, she has dived (下潜) more than 30 times in China’s deep sea submersibles (潜水器) like Fendouzhe. In May this year, she received the China Youth May Fourth Medal for her amazing discoveries in the deep sea. This medal is China’s top honor for young people.
In 2024, she led a team to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (千岛-堪察加海沟), which is over 9,000 meters deep. At 9,533 meters, the team saw something wonderful. The dark seabed was covered with some unusual animals. These deep sea animals survive without sunlight, getting energy from chemicals. This discovery was very important. It offered new ideas about how life evolved (演化) on Earth.
After this success, in 2025, she went to the Puysegur Trench (皮斯格海沟) to explore more. The storms there are very strong, with waves as tall as two-story houses. But Du was brave and did not give up. She waited for the quiet times between the storms and kept diving (下潜). “When the pilot asked me why I didn’t back down,” Du wrote in her diary, “I said: the deep sea never turns away a visitor. It is just waiting for eyes curious enough to see.”
Du has many plans for the future. One is to explore the ocean under the polar (极地的) ice. Whatever challenges lie ahead, she said she would meet them with the belief she has carried for years: “I enjoy living with nature, and it always teaches me something new.”

Wang Zhenyi (1768–1797) was a female mathematician and astronomer who lived in the Qing dynasty. She also had a talent for poetry.
Wang grew up in a family that valued education. As a child, she learnt mathematics from her father, astronomy from her grandfather and poetry from her grandmother. When she was a teenager, she spent a lot of time studying and building her knowledge in her grandfather’s library.
Wang learnt more and more about astronomy and mathematics, even though the language in the science books was very old-fashioned and difficult to understand. This experience made her realize something important: scientific texts need to be written in a clear way so that everyone can understand them.
With this in mind, she rewrote the mathematician Mei Wending’s famous book about calculation. At age 24, she created a simpler method of multiplication and division, and wrote a book about it.
Wang also studied astronomy on her own. She described lunar and solar eclipses in her works. In old times, people thought eclipses were a sign that heaven was angry with them, but Wang showed that these events were completely natural. She explained it in a simple way so that ordinary people could understand. She set up a model of a lunar eclipse in a garden. It was made up of a round table representing the Earth, a lamp as the Sun, and a round mirror as the Moon. Wang moved the objects around to show what happens during a lunar eclipse: when the Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow, the Moon becomes darker. Her model was clear and simple to understand, even for the youngest people in the audience.
In addition to her achievements in mathematics and astronomy, Wang Zhenyi was an excellent poet, and she wrote about unusually modern topics. Wang knew that women are no less intelligent than men, as we can see in this poem:
It’s made to believe,
Women are the same as Men;
Are you not convinced,
Daughters can also be heroic?
In 1994, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) named a crater on Venus after Wang Zhenyi. Since she achieved so much in her short time on Earth—she died at the age of 29—it is fitting that she is remembered beyond it.
1.Who taught Wang Zhenyi astronomy when she was young?
A.Her father. B.Her grandfather. C.Her grandmother. D.Mei Wending.
2.What did Wang Zhenyi do to help people understand a lunar eclipse?
A.She wrote many poems about it. B.She built a simple model for it.
C.She asked scientists to explain it. D.She watched the moon every night.
3.What can we infer from Wang Zhenyi’s poem?
A.Girls could not get education then. B.Women were as clever as men.
C.Only men could be heroes. D.Women must learn astronomy.
4.Why was a crater on Venus named after Wang Zhenyi?
A.Because she lived to be 29 years old.
B.Because she was a famous poet in Qing.
C.Because she made great achievements in science.
D.Because she built the first model of a lunar eclipse.
Jesse’s JournalAugust 12
I’m so thankful we’re all okay. I never imagined I’d have to go through something as terrifying as what happened yesterday. At first I thought we were about to have just a regular thunderstorm. The sky got dark and the wind picked up. Dad came in early from the fields on his tractor (拖拉机). Then my sister Julia said, “Look at the sky. Doesn’t it look weird (怪异的)?”
We went to the window and saw strange, heavy clouds. The sky had a terrible yellow. I heard the wind begin to roar and started to feel frightened. Mom told us to run to the storm cellar (地下室), but I wanted to go to my room to get some of my things first. Mom grabbed me and made me stay with everyone else. As we ran toward the storm cellar, I saw a long, thin cloud drop down from the sky and touch the ground. The noise grew louder, like a train rushing straight at us. My little brother Mark started to cry. I picked him up and carried him down the steps into the cellar.
We turned on the emergency lamps and huddled (蜷缩) together. Above us, we heard horrible sounds of crashing and tearing that seemed to go on forever. All I could think about was losing my computer and MP3 player. I knew Julia was worried about the clothes she had just bought, and Mark was thinking about his favorite toys.
It finally grew quiet again. We came upstairs. The whole house was gone—just gone. The garage (车库) next to the house hadn’t been touched, and the barn (谷仓) was fine. We all had the exact same reaction. Instead of crying about what we had lost, we hugged each other and cried because everyone was safe. We still had what mattered most—our family.
1.When the tornado (龙卷风) hits, what do the family’s children think about most?
A.Their home. B.Their belongings.
C.The pets and farm animals. D.The cars and farm equipment.
2.After the storm, why does the family cry?
A.They are thankful to be safe.
B.They are too frightened to do nothing.
C.They are sad about losing their belongings.
D.They know they have to rebuild their house.
3.Which of the following best describes Jesse’s feeling in the story?
A.Bored at first, then excited. B.Angry at first, then relaxed.
C.Hopeless at first, then lonely. D.Scared at first, then thankful.
4.Which statement is a theme of the passage?
A.Fear can make bad events worse.

Many people believe that a long afternoon nap (小睡,打盹) is a good way to get energy back. However, recent studies suggest that the length of your nap matters far more than you might think.
Experts at a European university followed over 20,000 grown-ups for more than five years. They found that people who napped for over 60 minutes each afternoon had a 30% higher danger of heart problems compared with those who did not nap at all. But those who napped for less than 30 minutes showed no such risk —in fact, they seemed to have slightly better heart health than non-nappers.
Why would a short nap help while a long one harms? Scientists offer two possible explanations. First, a long nap may break the body’s natural sleep cycle at night. When you sleep too long in the day, your body may try hard to fall asleep at night, leading to poor sleep quality overall. Second, a long nap is often a sign of other health issues. People who need to sleep for hours in the afternoon may already have hidden problems, such as poor blood sugar control or an undiagnosed (未确诊的) sleep disorder (失调,紊乱).
So what is the ideal nap? The answer, according to sleep experts, is 20 to 30 minutes. This length allows the body to rest without entering deep sleep. If you wake up from deep sleep, you may feel even more tired than before —a feeling scientists call “sleep inertia” (惯性;惰性).
As one researcher puts it, “A nap is like medicine. The right dose helps; too much can hurt.”
1.What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 mainly show?
A.How long the research lasted. B.How often people should nap.
C.How nap length affects heart health. D.How many people took part in the study.
2.How does the writer develop the idea in Paragraph 4?
A.By listing the benefits of deep sleep. B.By describing a personal experience.
C.By comparing short naps with long naps. D.By explaining a scientific term (术语) in detail.
3.What does the underlined word “dose” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.A fixed time for resting. B.A special kind of medicine.
C.A measured amount of something. D.A strong feeling of sleepiness.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Science of Sleep Cycles B.How to Cure Heart Problems
C.When a Nap Becomes a Danger D.The Best Time to Sleep at Night
In a film set in China, a 69-year-old actor is playing the part of a wealthy family leader in the show Grandma’s Moon.
Grandma’s Moon is not a movie or even a television show. Instead, it is a series of short videos, and it is called the micro drama (微短剧). A micro drama can be completed in just six days. It is made for easy watching on mobile phones. Each episode (集) is only a few minutes long.

In September 2026, a high school in England made a wise new rule: it completely bans all caffeinated energy drinks on campus. This rule stops students from buying or bringing energy drinks to school. It aims to protect teenagers’ physical and mental health.
Energy drinks are popular among young students because they taste sweet and help people stay awake quickly. However, these drinks have huge hidden risks. They contain high levels of caffeine and sugar. For teenage students, too much caffeine may cause fast heartbeats, headaches and poor sleep. Many students who drank energy drinks before found it hard to focus in daytime classes and often felt tired.
After one month of carrying out the new rule, the school saw great changes. Teachers reported that students became calmer in class. Fewer students felt sleepy during lessons. Besides, arguments and conflicts between students dropped greatly. Students have more energy for sports and study.
The school headmaster explained the purpose of the rule. He said teenagers’ bodies are still growing. Bad living habits in teenage years will influence their whole life. The school hopes students can form healthy lifestyles instead of depending on energy drinks. Healthy diets and daily exercise are the best ways to keep energetic.
1.Why do many students like energy drinks?

Family celebrations, such as holidays and birthday parties, are always a lot of fun. When family members get together, they talk and laugh. They often talk about today, the past or the future. These shared moments often become the stories we tell for years to come.
Here are some ideas to help you save your memories.
It’s never too late to start an album of family photos. You can ask family members to choose some photos from their collections. When you all get together, you can make a slide show. People always enjoy looking at old pictures. It’s a great way to bring back forgotten memories and share a few laughs.
Cameras are useful for recording videos of the family. Everyone can make a video from their own point of view. Videos are lively. They help you remember happy times. Watching them years later can feel like reliving those moments all over again.
It’s fun to make a family tree. Write the names, birth dates and hobbies of different family members. You can use photos, too. You can also write their interesting stories on the family tree. When there is a new family member—for example, a new baby—don’t forget to add him or her to the family tree. It’s a meaningful way to understand where you come from and who you are.
If you can’t attend a family celebration, don’t worry about it. You can write a letter or an e-mail to each person, or just call them. You can even talk to your family members face to face over the Internet. Never forget to stay in touch with your family.
1.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Making a family tree. B.Collecting family photos.
C.Talking to family members. D.Recording a video of the family.
2.What does the underlined word “reliving” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Living. B.Changing. C.Forgetting. D.Imagining.
3.Which of the following can probably be found in a family tree?
a. addresses b. hobbies c. stories d. jobs e. photos
A.a, b, c B.b, c, d C.a, d, e D.b, c, e

A.Attending family celebrations is right and necessary.
B.Keeping in touch with family members is important.
C.Proper ways of communication should be considered.
D.Worries about family celebrations should be avoided.

When you are a teenager, it seems that every time you say “I want to…”, your parents answer “No, you can’t.” 1
A 15-year-old girl, Debbie says, “My dad always wants to know where I am, and what time I’m going to be home.”
Most parents do that. Do they have to know everything? They should give us more freedom. 2 When something goes wrong, more parents just don’t believe in their children. Without asking why, they think their kids are wrong. And not many parents allow their kids to choose for themselves. Yes, it is true that your parents sometimes treat you like a little child, but remember that not too long ago you were really a child. Your parents still remember those childish mistakes that you used to make. 3
So, if you want to get more freedom, please try to understand your parents and do not lie to them. Try a more friendly way. If you want them to allow you to stay out late, don’t just say, “All the other kids can stay out late.” Tell them as much as you can about what you want to do, where you’ll be and why it’s important for you to stay out late. 4
A.They want to protect you though you do not want them to do so.
B.Also, no part of your life is safe from the prying (窥探的) eyes of your parents.
C.However, it’s possible that they stop us from doing many things.
D.Young people further complain (抱怨) that their parents do not respect (尊重) them.
E.Then they might just say “yes”.

To me, one of the most inspiring people in Chinese history is Mozi. It is said that Mozi had great military talent. 1 He was also the inventor of the kite. But in fact, above all, he was a great thinker.
2 Back then, many kingdoms were fighting against one another. In these wars, the common people were always hurt. Mozi thought this had to stop. So he spent his life trying to bring peace. He walked a long way to stop wars. He saved many lives.
His idea of love was one reason that Mozi wanted peace. He believed that everyone should show the same kindness and care to everyone else. It doesn’t matter if they are family, friends, or strangers. He also believed states should avoid attacking one another. This kind of love is simple. 3
Though Mozi lived more than 2,000 years ago, his ideas live on. I think he is still a great inspiration to many people. Today, people around the world need his message of peace and love more than ever. 4 We should build a community of a shared future for mankind.
A.But it is very strong.
B.We should work together.
C.He was good at woodwork.
D.Mozi lived in a period full of wars.
E.Mozi taught people to love everyone equally.

September 27 is World Tourism (旅游) Day. You might also be getting ready to take a trip with your family during your holiday. Will it be a “special forces-style trip”, a “laid-back tourism”, or a “healing retreat”? The choices seem never-ending.
But did you know that not long ago, many Chinese people travelled by just following tour guides and taking photos? So why have so many new travel methods appeared in just a few years?
There are many reasons. For one, young people don't like fixed plans anymore. They prefer to explore unique, less-visited places. Some even go to small towns for music festivals, choosing personal interests over popular spots.
Many also start trips without any plans, enjoying surprises along the way. On Xiaohongshu, one person wrote, “Arriving in Datong, Shanxi, in an hour. Any suggestions for relaxing dining and activities?”
China’s tourism market is still changing quickly. Will you be the one to start the next trend (趋势)?
MORE NEW STYLES
●Micro-holiday
A micro-holiday is a new travel trend where people take short trips to nearby big cities. These trips usually last two to three days and include activities like visiting a theme park or going for a hike.
●Bus tourism.
Bus tourism is a travel style that means exploring cities by using local public transportation like buses and subways, and travellers care about the local culture more than the destination.
1.When is World Tourism Day?
2.How did many Chinese people travel not long ago?
3.Why do many people start trips without any plans?
4.Which travel style do you prefer, micro-holiday or bus tourism? Why? Write 30 words or more.

Imagine a student who loves painting but lost the use of his right hand after an illness. He watched others draw freely and felt left out. How could he paint again?
Now a new tool called the “eye brush” has come out. It lets people draw pictures by moving only their eyes. The brush was developed by Lin Fang, a software engineer, after she visited a rehab (康复) center. She saw a young man staring at a canvas (画布), unable to hold a pencil. He used a wheelchair and could only move his head a little.
Lin Fang remembered how her little brother used to blink (眨眼) to choose TV channels. Suddenly she realized: eyes can choose colors, too. She started to work with a hospital. Eight months later, the eye brush was ready. It has a small camera that follows the pupil. The user looks at a color on the screen, blinks once to pick it, looks at the canvas, and blinks to put the dot. A full line is made by looking and blinking at the start and the end.
The hospital first tested it on 12 patients. Over 9 million people in China have hand disabilities. When the tool works well, it will bring art back to many people. One of them, named Zhao Lei, says, “As a man who thought painting was gone for me, I am amazed by this. Art comes back indeed. My eyes now dance on the screen. That never happened before.”
1.Who invented the eye brush?
2.How does the eye brush pick a color?
3.What does Zhao Lei think of the eye brush?
4.If you could invent a technology to help people with disabilities, what would it be and why? Write more than 30 words.

In September 2026, a speech by a school principal became very popular online. The principal’s name is Jin Chengyue. He works at Yanshan Ethnic Middle School in Wenshan, Yunnan Province. His speech at the school’s opening ceremony was 8 minutes long, but the video has been watched more than 250 million times. Many people said they were moved to tears.
In his speech, Principal Jin talked about three important things. First, he said schools should treat teachers well. He believes that only when teachers feel warm and respected can they teach students well. He did many things to help teachers, such as cutting down unnecessary meetings and forms. He also gave teachers two half-days of paid leave each month.
Second, he asked teachers and parents to pay attention to students’ growth beyond grades. He said that not every seed needs to grow into a tall tree. Some students may not go to university, but they can still be useful people. He mentioned that some graduates of his school run restaurants, sell barbecue, or do housework for others. He said any child who works hard and is kind should be respected.
Third, he said schools should be both strict and kind. Rules must be followed, but teachers should also be gentle with students. He said good education is neither too strict nor too loose.
Principal Jin’s speech has been praised by many people, including education officials in Beijing. It has also made people think about what education is really for.

Was it possible for a Chinese engineer to build a railway through the mountains more than a hundred years ago? Many foreigners at that time said no. Zhan Tianyou proved them wrong.
Zhan was born in Guangzhou in 1861. At the age of twelve, he became one of the first Chinese children sent to study in the United States. He worked so hard that he was admitted to Yale University, where he studied railway engineering. After returning home, however, he found few chances to use his knowledge, because almost no railways in China were designed by Chinese engineers at that time.
In 1905, the Qing government decided to build a railway from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. Several foreign companies wanted the project, and some even said mockingly (嘲讽地) that the Chinese engineer who could build it “had not been born yet”. Zhan took the job.
The biggest challenge lay in the steep (陡峭的) mountains around Badaling. The railway had to climb nearly six hundred metres within a short distance, but trains at that time were not powerful enough for such a slope (斜坡). After careful surveys, Zhan designed a clever “人”-shaped track. The train would move forward up one slope, then backward up another, climbing higher step by step, just like someone walking up stairs.
He also refused to copy foreign designs blindly. Based on his own surveys, he shortened some tunnels and chose safer routes, saving both money and time. In 1909, the railway was completed two years ahead of schedule and cost less than planned.
Today, a statue of Zhan Tianyou stands beside the Badaling Great Wall. He is remembered not only as the father of China’s railways, but also as an example showing that confidence and creativity can really move mountains.
1.How old was Zhan Tianyou when he was sent to study in the United States?
2.How did Zhan Tianyou deal with the biggest challenge around Badaling?
3.According to the passage, what can move mountains?
4.What can you learn from Zhan Tianyou for your own study? Give your reason (s). Write 30 words or more.

A writer, scientist, inventor and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin was a man of many talents and one of the most famous people in the 18th century.
From a young age, Franklin’s great love of learning set him apart from many others. As one of 17 children in a big family, Franklin had only two years of education before he had to start working. While working in his brother’s print shop, Franklin taught himself by reading a lot. He often borrowed books from booksellers and stayed up very late in order to return them early the next day.
Curious about the world around him, Franklin once became interested in studying storms. He followed the storms and did many tests. Then he found out that storms moved from one place to another. His findings helped predict the weather.
What’s more, Franklin had a great love for science, so his countless inventions came as no surprise. Even in his late 70s, he invented a type of special glasses to help him see better.

It’s made to believe,
Women are the same as Men;
Are you not convinced,
Daughters can also be heroic?
【答案】1.B 2.B 3.B 4.C

To me, one of the most inspiring people in Chinese history is Mozi. It is said that Mozi had great military talent. 1 He was also the inventor of the kite. But in fact, above all, he was a great thinker.

【答案】1.On September 27. 2.By just following tour guides and taking photos. 3.Because they want to enjoy surprises along the way. 4.I prefer bus tourism. Because taking public transportation is a green way to travel and it helps protect the environment. What’s more, it gives me a better chance to experience the local culture and see how local people live their daily lives. (言之有理即可)

【答案】1.Lin Fang./Lin Fang, a software engineer. 2.The user looks at a color on the screen and blinks once (to pick it)./By looking at a color on the screen and blinking once. 3.Amazing./He thinks it brings art back to him./He thinks it can make art come back. 4.I would invent a voice-controlled wheelchair that can climb stairs. Because it can follow people’s voice orders to move around and get over steps. With its help, disabled people can go outside freely without others’ help. It will make their daily life much more convenient.
1.第二段提到“The brush was developed by Lin Fang, a software engineer”,眼刷由软件工程师林芳发明。

He also gave teachers two half-days of paid leave each month.
Second, he asked teachers and parents to pay attention to students’ growth beyond grades. He said that not every seed needs to grow into a tall tree. Some students may not go to university, but they can still be useful people. He mentioned that some graduates of his school run restaurants, sell barbecue, or do housework for others. He said any child who works hard and is kind should be respected.
Third, he said schools should be both strict and kind. Rules must be followed, but teachers should also be gentle with students. He said good education is neither too strict nor too loose.

【答案】1.He was twelve / 12 years old. 2.He designed a clever “人”‑shaped track after careful surveys. 3.Confidence and creativity (can move mountains). 4.We should be hard‑working, confident and creative in our study. Zhan Tianyou worked hard and solved difficult problems with creative ideas. We shouldn’t give up when facing difficulties. We need to think independently instead of copying others’ answers blindly. (开放性试题,答案不唯一,合理即可)
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了詹天佑凭借智慧与创造力主持修建京张铁路,为中国工程师赢得尊重的故事。
1.根据第二段“At the age of twelve, he became one of the first Chinese children sent to study in the United States.”可知十二岁时,他成为最早一批被派往美国留学的中国孩童之一。
2.根据第四段“After careful surveys, Zhan designed a clever “人”-shaped track.”可知经过仔细勘测,詹天佑设计出巧妙的“人”字形轨道。题干问“如何解决八达岭最大难题”,核心办法就是勘测后设计“人”字形轨道。
3.根据最后一段“…but also as an example showing that confidence and creativity can really move mountains.”

Dear Aunt Linda,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to ask for your help because I’m stuck in some troubles.
I feel great pressure from my studies—there are too many tasks every day and I can’t keep up with my classmates. Also, I had a fight with my best friend and we haven’t talked for a few days. Besides, I can’t balance my hobby of drawing with my schoolwork. I’m so confused and don’t know what to do.
Could you give me some advice? I’d really appreciate it.
Yours,
Li Hui

【答案】例文
Dear Aunt Linda,
I like reading your advice page. It is very useful. I’m writing to share my experience with you.
I had some difficulties in learning English. I worked hard at English, but I couldn’t get high marks in exams, which made me feel stressed. Sometimes, I even wanted to give it up. Fortunately, my English teacher noticed my problem, she told me many ways to learn English. For example, she asks me to recite five words every day and dictate in time. She also advised me to listen to English songs and watch English movies, and we often share songs and movies together. With my persistence and the help of my teacher, my English has improved a lot.
Although growing up is hard, I still believe my life will be full of love and joy. I wish I can have a wonderful life in the future.
Yours,
Li Hui
