To keep the heat inside in the winter, she is filling the space inside the walls with insulation (绝缘). The lightbulbs in it last for 20 to 30 years before needing ____3____ (change). People can ask the group to come and look at ____6____ they can make their house or office building eco-friendly. The CEA then makes them a plan to save 15 to 30 percent on heating, gas, water, and electricity.
Then the group help people borrow money to pay for the improvements. The money that people save ____7____ being more efficient should be enough to pay back the loan. If the program is successful, it will not only save a lot of energy but also make new jobs for local people. Southern Utah in the United States is a land of extremes. The normally dry desert is occasionally ____11____ in summer rainstorms. The days are very hot and the nights very cold. It is also a beautiful place with a long history of human habitation. Perhaps it’s no surprise that modern outdoor adventurers come to southern Utah to go hiking, camping, and horseback riding in the area’s national forests, or to see the fantastic rock formations in Bryce Canyon National Park.
What might surprise you is that some of the adventurers choose to spend their time outdoors with little food or water and no modern camping equipment. Instead, they’re learning to live in the wilderness in the ____12____ way. The Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS), ____13____ in 1968, is the world’s oldest survival school. The students and instructors end their day around a crackling campfire, but the fire is made using stones and brush from the area, not ____16____. The school’s courses are not for everyone. Students must arrive in excellent physical health in order to ____17____ hikes of up to 30 miles through Utah’s deserts and canyons. The field course also includes “solo” time, when students are ____19____ in a very real way on everything they’ve learned. For the people who take BOSS’s courses, there is nothing better. If they wanted to spend time outdoors in comfort, they would pack their camping equipment and perhaps their GPS system and join the rest of Utah’s outdoor enthusiasts. And the confidence they gain from knowing how to survive without a lot of technology is the reward these brave people are looking for.

“Journalism” came into existence when reliable information was scarce. As newspaper publishing and distribution grew, editors had to satisfy demands for ____21____ as well as entertainment. The effort to be trusted came to be the distinguishing mark of journalism. But printing technology made journalism powerful: a few people gathered sorted and ____22____ news and hoped that many people would buy it. However, three changes turned this ____23____ of public information into today’s glut (过剩): the invention of radio and television, digital technology such as email, and finally the Internet. Digital communications not only increased the amount of easily-reached information but ____24____ the power of traditional publishing.

Some citizen journalists make a real contribution to this; some don’t. In other words, we’re back where we started: ____34____ accuracy and honesty. (A)
Adventurer Holly Budge, 29, described the experience as “amazing, just spectacular” after making a safe landing at 3,900 metres. The Hampshire camerawoman was one of three skydivers in Nepal to make the first plunge from above the world’s highest peak. We had one minute of freefall and while we were above the clouds you could see Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) and the other high mountains popping out of the top,’ she said. The group of three, described by onlookers as looking “like tiny birds flying in the blue sky”, faced sub-zero temperatures and fast-changing weather when they touched down in the foothills of the mountain.
The event, organised by British adventure travel company High and Wild, will see up to 30 more skydivers from around the world make the same attempt in the coming days. Each of its clients has paid about £13,500 for the experience. “It was worth the money — it is something that has never been done before,” said Ms Budge, who has completed 2,500 skydives and who jumped to raise money for charities in Britain and Nepal.
Skydiving at altitudes (高度) just higher than the summit of Mount Everest created numerous challenges for the project. Due to the thin air, their parachutes (降落伞) were three times the size of regular ones, and the jumpers used oxygen tanks strapped to their waists. “The organisers have brought a plane over from Switzerland, and the permits have been very expensive, as has getting everyone to the jump site,” said Budge.
The oldest client due to make the jump in the coming days is Alan Walton, a 72-year-old British partner in a bioscience company, organiser Nigel Gifford said. “Although many are very experienced, others are making their first ever skydive and will be going with experts,” said Gifford, whose company has permission to operate in the area for another 13 days. The “Everest Skydive” is an event that has been 15 years in the making for Mr Gifford. “It came about because I have been a Himalayan mountaineer and took up skydiving. I love doing both and I thought it would be good to marry the two,” he said.
36. In Ms Budge’s opinion, ________.
A. she would’ve paid more for the experience
B. the jump was vastly overpriced for what it was
C. the fee was reasonable for such a once-in-a-lifetime experience
D. no one would consider paying thousands of pounds to skydive off Everest
37. According to the writer, Alan Walton ________.
A. will not be allowed to jump as he is too old
B. is on the list to jump in the next few days
C. will probably be ready to skydive in a year’s time
D. wants to have his name added to the waiting list of skydivers
38. Mr Gifford, the organiser of the event, ________.
A. decided that all participants should be experienced in both climbing and skydiving
B. has tried both climbing and skydiving but has failed to bring them together
C. was not optimistic about the skydive
D. has enjoyed bringing the two sports together
39. Looking at the text as a whole, what best describes the overall experience of the skydive?
A. The expense of the trip ruined the experience.
B. It was a complete success and everybody had a truly memorable experience.
C. People generally had a positive experience, though complained of the extreme cold.
D. Conditions were a lot worse than expected and people’s high expectations were not met.

Wild-animal reintroduction programs aim to set animals bred in zoos back into their natural wild habitat. These projects sound attractive, yet many of them end up with low success rates. Scientists have been exploring the key factors that decide whether reintroduction will succeed. One obvious factor is the condition of the target wild habitat. If the original environment has been severely destroyed or polluted, releasing animals there makes little sense. Even if the habitat is physically intact, we need to make sure there is enough food and suitable shelter for the released animals.
Another vital factor is the animals’ skill of survival. Animals raised inside zoos lose many essential wild skills. They may not know how to hunt, avoid natural enemies or search for safe shelters. Therefore, prerelease training programmes are very important. Before being set free, zoo-bred animals should receive practical training: learning to identify natural food sources, recognize and escape from predators. Without such training, most released animals cannot survive long in the wild. Human behaviour also plays a big role.
Illegal hunting, poaching and human-animal conflict can wipe out the reintroduced population. Local public education is essential. Residents living nearby should be informed of the significance of this wildlife project, and taught how to coexist peacefully with wild animals. Strict antipoaching measures must also be carried out. Reintroduction is not simply “opening the cage door and letting animals go”. It is complex systematic work. Only when habitat, animal survival skills and human related conditions are all well-prepared can a wild-animal reintroduction project achieve long term success.
43. Why do many animal reintroduction projects fail?
A. Zoo animals refuse to leave zoos.
B. Multiple key factors are not well-prepared.
C. Local residents dislike these wild animals.
D. There are too many natural enemies in the wild.
44. What is prerelease training intended for?
A. To help animals get used to human beings.
B. To check animals’ physical health condition.
C. To teach zoo-raised animals necessary survival skills.
D. To increase the number of zoo-bred animals.
45. Which of the following measure belongs to human factor preparation?
A. Restoring food resources inside the habitat.
B. Training animals to escape from predators.
C. Repairing damaged wild environment.
D. Carrying out antipoaching laws strictly.
46. What is the main idea of this article?
A. Zoo-bred animals are not fit for wild life.
B. Wild-animal reintroduction is impractical.
C. Successful animal reintroduction requires multiple conditions.
D. Human activities are the biggest threat to wild animals.

The Hubble Space Telescope (哈勃太空望远镜)
For centuries, astronomers looking at the moon, the planets, and the stars have faced a basic problem: the earth’s atmosphere. Although it provides the air we breathe as well as protection from the sun, the atmosphere prevents us from seeing clearly into space even with the largest and most advanced telescopes.
Then came Lyman Spitzer, an astrophysicist with a remarkable idea: put a large telescope in orbit (轨道) around the earth, outside of the earth’s atmosphere. ____47____. ”The chief contribution of such a new and more powerful instrument,“ he predicted, ”would be, not to help us know more about the universe we live in, but rather to uncover new phenomena not yet imagined, and perhaps to modify our basic concepts of space and time.“ ____48____. In 1993, NASA released the first images from the Hubble telescope. Since then, scientists have used Hubble to follow the comet Shoemaker Levy 9 as it hit the giant planet Jupiter. They have produced images of the amazing and unique beauty of planetary nebulae, giant clouds of gas produced by dying stars.
They have proved the existence of black holes at the centers of galaxies. And just as Spitzer imagined, Hubble led to surprising new discoveries. Astronomers once expected that gravity would slow the expansion of the universe. ____49____. This groundbreaking finding won the Nobel Prize in Physics. ____50____. It cannot be repaired any more by astronauts. Therefore, scientists are preparing its successor. The huge James Webb Space Telescope will take over its tasks and continue to explore the universe.
A. However, Hubble is getting old, and its final scheduled service mission was completed in 2009.
B. Spitzer was right.
C. The huge James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled for launch in the near future.
D. Instead, astronomers discovered that the expansion is not slowing down at all. It is speeding up!
E. Spitzer suggested this idea in 1946 and said the telescope would not only test existing ideas, but also inspire completely new ones.
F. Then what happened next?

III. Summary Writing
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Five Dangerous Things (That You Should Let Your Children Do) Gever Tulley thinks that things like government safety regulations encourage modern parents to overprotect children, and that it is affecting their ability to learn and think. He wants kids to do dangerous things. In fact, he even wrote a book called Fifty Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do) to encourage parents to allow their children to experiment--safely--with fire, pocket knives, and power tools. This might sound crazy, but Tulley is serious. He argues that children who experiment and explore their world learn about natural phenomena, develop attention and concentration skills, and understand how complicated systems work.
He thinks that activities like throwing a spear can even help children’s brains develop more fully and improve their skills in visualization and prediction. Most importantly, Tulley says, his goals behind encouraging kids to take risks is promoting “safety and simple things that we can do to raise our kids to be creative, confident and in control of the environment around them.” Tulley wants parents and kids to do these activities together, but with kids taking the lead. Gever Tulley knows a lot about taking risks. Although his background is in computer science, he has developed programs to help children have the kind of experience he advocates in his book.
First, in 2006, he started the Tinkering School, a summer camp where “kids learn how to build the things they think of”. Kids at Tinkering School have built a treehouse, a bridge, and lots of boats and vehicles. After that risk, Tulley took an even bigger one. In 2011, he started a school in San Francisco, California, called Brightworks. From its first class of 11 students, the school has grown to 30 students, and there are plans to enroll 80 students by 2016. Students at Brightworks learn through doing group projects that build their academic and social skills, at the same time as they grow as community members.

What Can One City Do?
People around the world are concerned about global warming and are talking about ways to stop it. The city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States, is doing more than just talking. Cambridge wants to become a world leader in energy-efficient buildings. Today, Naema Omar is improving her 80-year-old house in Cambridge. To keep the heat inside in the winter, she is filling the space inside the walls with insulation (绝缘). Insulation is usually made from chemicals, but in her house, she is using ____1____ new-insulation made from recycled blue jeans and other clothes. She has also put in a new type of light called an LED lamp ____2____ uses only a tiny amount of electricity.
The lightbulbs in it last for 20 to 30 years before needing ____3____ (change). But eco-friendly insulation and lighting are much ____4____ (expensive) than the usual kind, and many people in Cambridge can’t afford them. A group called Cambridge Energy Alliance (CEA) ____5____ (work) to solve this problem. They want to help every resident and business in the city conserve energy.
It was ten years ago ____8____ the city of Cambridge decided to try to reduce its carbon emissions. More than 80 percent of the carbon dioxide ____9____ (produce) in Cambridge comes from buildings--not from cars. If the program is successful, it will not only save a lot of energy but also make new jobs for local people. Workers _____10_____ (need) to put in insulation, install better doors and windows, and make other energy improvements on buildings. The CEA hopes that their program will be an example for other cities.

Survival School
With its ____14____ of “Know more; carry less”, BOSS teaches its students techniques for surviving outdoors without tents, backpacks, or sleeping bags. Participants learn to make shelters from leaves or snow, to find and ____15____ water for drinking, and to eat what they can find in the wild.
They must be ____18____ learners because they’ll need all the skills the BOSS instructors teach them in order to survive a field course, which can last from one week to one month.
Instead, these campers love the way BOSS _____20_____ their minds and bodies.

Anyone can now publish their thoughts and their books for free to a global audience. Old-fashioned print publishing by the few to the many sits ____25____ next to successful “peer-to-peer” networks. Against this background, citizen journalism’ can simply mean a wider range of ____26____. Big events that leave media organisations rushing to get to the right spots are now covered by ____27____ witnesses who send instant photos and videos from their mobile phones. Where established reporters fear to go — war zones being the obvious ____28____ — the voice of the ordinary citizen journalist may be the only believable news source. But if it is the case that anyone can be a journalist, what is journalism?
Whatever the era and technology, it must surely involve an organised attempt to show what is happening, to reduce or eliminate ____29____ about what is true. Journalists still gather the basic news, but must also meet the need to give it meaning and context. We analyse news in the context of instant global conversations that can involve a handful of people or millions. The forces of change may bring down media empires that fail to adapt, but they do not ____30____ the idea of journalism. The need to know the accuracy of what they are reading or watching does not ____31____ because you have a lot of new ways of finding facts and other points of view.
The nature of the news and opinion people now consume is changing: more varied, less ____32____, often like an everyday conversation. Also the way people sample and use news and opinion is changing: they dip in and out of news all day. But the business of getting accurate basic data to consumers, of building platforms that people ____33____ remains valuable work despite the changing background. Some citizen journalists make a real contribution to this; some don’t. In other words, we’re back where we started: ____34____ accuracy and honesty. The most important question ____35____ of news and opinion will ask themselves is the question they have always asked: do I trust this source to tell me something true and useful?
