Today we're going to talk about the rainforest, a part of nature that is important to us all.
Rainforests are often called the "lungs of the earth". That's because they produce oxygen and help control the world's climate. Rainforests cover only about 6% of land. However, they are home to more than half of the animals and plants on the earth.
Rainforests are disappearing because of human activity. Farmers cut down trees to make more space for their animals. Also, factories cut down trees to make paper. In 2021 alone, about 37,500 square kilometres of rainforests were lost. That's about ten football fields every minute! It's a serious problem,

Welcome to today’s programme. We will tell you a useful way to deal with your old mobile phone.
Logging in rainforests is usually against the law. However, it's difficult to notice it. Topher White, a US engineer, came up with a solution - he puts "ears" on trees.
His invention uses an old mobile phone, a solar panel and a microphone. This is how it works: First, the invention is tied to trees. Next, an app on the mobile phone starts listening. When it catches the noise of cutting down trees, it sends an alarm to the forest guards. The guards can soon find the place and stop the logging.
The invention has been used in 10 countries. It has saved over 2,500 square kilometres of rainforests. That's about the size of 350,000 football fields.
