Zhang Wei is a 32-year-old engineer from Shanghai. In 2020, he made a big decision—he left his well-paid job in the city and returned to his hometown in Gansu Province to start a new project.
Zhang Wei’s hometown is a small village in the mountains. When he was a child, the village was very poor. People used to farm on small pieces of land. There was no running water or electricity in many homes. Children had to walk over two hours to get to the nearest school.
After Zhang Wei finished college, he worked in Shanghai for eight years. During those years, he never forgot his hometown. He often thought about how to help the village develop. Finally, he decided to go back and bring changes.
Zhang Wei used his engineering skills to build a small factory that uses solar energy (太阳能). The factory produces machines that help farmers water their crops more efficiently. With these machines, farmers can save water and grow more vegetables. “In the past, farmers had to carry water from faraway rivers,” Zhang Wei said. “Now, our machines do the hard work.”
Over the past six years, the village has changed a lot. More than 50 families have started using solar energy in their homes. A new school has been built with the money from the factory. Young people who left the village are starting to come back to work in the new factory.

How can you combine (结合) games with English learning? The answer is a game app! Its players must correctly guess a five-letter word with just six tries. You either win by guessing it or lose because you run out of tries.
The game has been popular with millions of players across the world. Every midnight, the game app refreshes (更新) its word of the day. For example, the answer for November 3rd is ALOUD, and the answer for November 4th is OTHER.
As you guess, the game gives you hints (提示). For example, if a letter is correct and in the right place, it turns green. If the letter is not in the word, it turns gray. If the letter is part of the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. These hints make the game into a puzzle.
You need knowledge to win this game, not just luck. Every syllable (音节) in an English word includes at least one vowel (元音), so finding vowels is a useful method. For example, in the word “think”, there is only one syllable and there is one vowel “i”.
Several days ago, I played this game and found it very interesting. First, I guessed the word “table”. Only “a” was green. Then, I guessed “maker” and the “r” turned yellow. In the end, I guessed “carry” and I was correct!

The small river behind my grandmother’s house was my childhood paradise (乐园). Every day after school, my friends and I would play by it. We loved watching small fish swim near the shore and listening to birds sing in the trees. The river smelled like wet earth and green grass — a smell I can still remember when I close my eyes.
One special memory shines brightest. On my tenth birthday, Grandpa taught me to fish using just a bamboo pole and some bread. The sun was warm on our backs as we waited quietly. When I caught my first fish, Grandpa smiled and said, “Good job!” That night, we let the fish go back into the water.
Now my hometown has changed greatly. The small and old road is gone. There are very wide and new roads. Standing by the roads are many tall buildings. It is quite different from the hometown in the past. I feel a little upset, but when I recall my childhood days, I still feel happy and warm.
I always think of what my Grandpa taught me: Life keeps changing like this river, but happy memories stay with us forever. When I feel sad or worried, I think of those sunny afternoons by the water. The river reminds me to be thankful for the past but keep looking forward to the future.
1.What does “it” refer to in the first paragraph?
A.The small river. B.My grandmother’s house.

A.Be thankful for the past.

There are challenges to recycling clothes and shoes. Many of them are difficult to recycle, so lots of old clothes and shoes become waste. But a company in France is trying to make recycling easier and more popular with new technology.
The company is called CETIA.It has built two special machines that use artificial intelligence(AI) to help recycle clothes and shoes. With AI technology, one machine can find and cut off zippers (拉链) and buttons (纽扣) on clothes quickly. The other machine can pull off soles (鞋底)from shoes easily, which was very hard for people to do before.
This sounds simple, but no one has ever done it before. “No one was recycling soles because it was hard to separate them from shoes,” said Chloe Salmon Legagneur, director of CETIA.In the past, people had to put the shoes in an oven to melt the glue and pull off the soles by hand. But CETIA’s machine can do it much faster and better.
Some clothes can be recycled into materials for houses or roads. But most clothes cannot be easily turned into new clothes. That is because clothes have different materials that must be separated carefully by hand. This usually takes a long time and costs a lot of money. However, CETIA’s machine can do the separation faster and better than people. It can even separate clothes by color and material, making it easier to recycle old clothes into new ones.
Recycling clothes and shoes is important because it reduces waste and protects the environment. It can also create new jobs for people. CETIA is doing amazing work by developing these useful recycling machines. They’re showing us that with smart thinking and new technology, we can find good ways to solve big environmental problems.

B.Separating clothes by color and material.
C.Cutting off zippers and buttons on clothes.
D.Putting the shoes on an oven to melt the glue.
3.What does the writer think about the two machines?
A.He finds them amazing B.He thinks they’re helpless.
C.He believes they need improvement. D.He worries about their future.
4.What will happen to old clothes due to (因为) the new machine?
A.They will be sold in Africa. B.They will be made into new materials.
C.They will be made into shoes. D.They will be made into new clothes.
5.The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A.explain the importance of recycling
B.introduce a company and its inventions

Many people ask me “What’s the best way to learn?” To tell the truth, there isn’t one correct answer. 1 Here are some of them.
Some people learn by rules. They need rules and explanations to understand new materials. Once they find a rule and use it, they’ll learn better. 2 These people will learn better if they have the chance to use their hands or body. They don’t like explanations. They remember better if they do a task rather than just reading about it.
Some people learn by seeing or hearing. For those who learn by seeing, they can understand better once they see a picture, a table, or a real object. 3 When they try to remember the information, they will remember the picture or photo first. For those who learn by hearing, they like to listen to sounds and voices rather than just see or read. It is difficult for them to remember the information unless they listen to someone talking about it.
4 For those who prefer to learn on their own, they won’t feel comfortable unless they study by themselves in a quiet room. For those who like to learn with others, they like to work in groups and discuss the subject with other people in order to understand it better.
Most people don’t have only one learning style, but they may prefer one style to another. 5
A.Pictures or photos help them remember new material.
B.However, some other people prefer learning by doing.
C.Some people prefer to learn alone while other people like to learn with others.
D.Different people have different learning styles.
E.It is necessary for people to learn by doing all the time.
F.And the most important is to find out which way suits you.

Fine with Feynman
What if the key to being a top student wasn’t studying harder, but teaching others? For 14-year-old Zhong Ruoxi from Chengdu, Sichuan, this “secret weapon” is called the Feynman Technique.
The 8th grader at Golden Apple Jincheng No 1 Secondary School wasn’t always at the top of her class. “Before, I just listened in class but forgot things the next day,” she said. Things started to change when her mom introduced her to the Feynman Technique and encouraged her to explain problems to her classmates and sometimes her parents. The steps are simple: First, choose a topic (including sub-topics) to learn. Second, explain the topic in simple language (for a sixth-grader to understand) to your friends, teachers, classmates or parents. Next, review your explanation to find out your weak points. Finally, refine your explanation until you understand the topic well. Reward yourself once you’ve mastered the topic.
Zhong uses this method most in physics. “Sometimes I quickly finish a problem, but when I explain it to my classmates, I get stuck at some point. In the process of teaching, I notice more details that I missed before. This helps me understand the questions better,” Zhong said. She used the same method for biology, too. When she studied mitosis of cells (细胞的有丝分裂), she was confused at first. “So I drew comics for each stage and explained them to my mom,” she said. By turning the complex science into a funny comic story, everything became much clearer.
For Zhong, the best part of this method is the shared progress. “When my classmates finally understand a geometry (几何学) problem after I use props such as pens and rulers to act out the scene, we all light up with joy,” she said. “The sense of achievement becomes my biggest motivation (动力) to learn.”
Now, Zhong has jumped from the middle ranks to the top three in her class. “It feels amazing,” she said. So, grab a friend and start teaching — you might be surprised how much you learn.
ABOUT THE FEYNMAN TECHNIQUERichard Feynman (1918-1988) was a US Nobel Prize-winning physicist. He is often called “the great explainer” and is regarded as one of the greatest science teachers in modern history. The Feynman Technique, named after Richard Feynman, is a way for students to learn through teaching. As Feynman once said, “If you can’t explain something to a first-year student, then you haven’t really understood.”
According to a website for students to study online, the Feynman Technique works because it makes you think about the problem actively instead of just reading or listening to someone else talk about it:
1.List the steps of the Feynman Technique (每空不超过5个词)
Choose a topic to learn →(1) →(2) →Refine your explanation
2.How did Zhong Ruoxi understand cell mitosis better?
3.Translate the underlined phrase into Chinese.
4.Which method do you prefer, the Feynman Technique or traditional study method? Why? (give at least 2 reasons)
5.Complete the summary according to the passage (only one word for each blank)
Now, many students have ① from an effective learning method called the Feynman Technique. Because of it, they have become ② learners. Zhong Ruoxi is one of them. She used to ③ in class and forgot things easily the next day. Since the Feynman Technique was used ④ her secret weapon, she has made great progress. Now she gets used to ⑤ problems to her classmates and it’s amazing ⑥ her ⑦ jump into the top three in her class. The feeling of achievement pushes her to study ⑧ . If you want to improve yourself, why not have a try?
When people speak of Wang Hong, they often mention the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖). However, the most valuable part of her story for students lies in her spirit when facing difficult questions.
When she was a child, Wang had a serious burn and had to stay indoors for a long time. She couldn’t play freely outside, so books and maths problems filled her quiet world. This experience helped her develop patience and learn to work alone. Later, this ability let her spend days thinking over hard problems without rushing to get answers.
At school, Wang thought actively but was once laughed at for raising her hand often. Her teacher helped her balance courage and careful listening. She joined a problem-solving group. The group didn’t offer ready-made answers. It forced her to explain why an idea worked, where it might fail and how to improve it in other ways.
University brought new challenges. At first, Wang failed to get into her dream maths major (专业). With competitive classmates around her, she doubted herself, but she never gave up her love for maths. She kept reading maths books and doing more exercises. She also discussed hard problems with her teachers and classmates whenever she met trouble. She tried different courses and finally transferred (转入) to the School of Maths. When studying in France, she put aside her maths research for a short time to explore art and architecture (建筑). She did this to find out whether she truly wanted to return to maths.
Wang Hong’s success tells us that hard work and continuous efforts matter a lot. If we keep trying and never give up, we will make progress in our studies.
1.When did Wang Hong get badly burned?
2.What did Wang Hong’s problem-solving group force her to do?
3.Who did Wang Hong communicate with to solve her problems in university?
4.Why did Wang Hong put aside her maths research for a short time when studying in France?
5.Do you think Wang Hong is a great inspiration? Why?
Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China’s first nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away in Wuhan on February 6th, 2025. He is known as “the Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines”.
Born in Guangdong in March 1926 into a doctor’s family, Huang was the third child. He spent his boyhood during the war and later studied shipbuilding at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After graduating in 1949, he worked in the shipbuilding industry all his life. In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the team designing China’s first nuclear submarine. For the next 30 years, he rarely went home.
At that time, China had no basic conditions for building nuclear submarines. The researchers knew almost nothing about this field. Worse still, foreign countries kept the technology secret and provided little information.
So Huang and his team began by searching newspapers and magazines for useful information. After careful analysis (分析) and study of two US submarine models, they came up with five designs. Without computers, they used abacuses (算盘) to do calculations. To make sure the results were correct, they divided into three groups to work on the maths at the same time. If the three values differed, they would redo the work.
After years of hard work, China built its first nuclear submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth country to own one.
Huang’s name remained unknown until 1987, when a Shanghai magazine published a report with only his family name. Even in his 90s, he went to his office every weekday to review materials and give advice to young researchers. In 2019, he received the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour.

From desert to oasis (绿洲)
Sand is eight steps away. That was how Babusha got its name: “Babu” means eight steps in Chinese and “sha” means sand. In the past, Babusha often suffered from sandstorms, which buried the farmland, often leaving nothing to harvest in Gulang County, Northwest China’s Gansu Province.
Today, Babusha is no longer at the mercy of the sand: After three generations’ efforts, the vegetation coverage rate (植被覆盖率) has increased to 70 percent from less than 3 percent in the 1980s.
The war began with “six old men” who spent their lives fighting the desert. At present, Guo Wangang is the head of Babusha Forest Farm. His father, Guo Chaoming, was one of the six men who first began planting trees here in 1981. When his father was forced to stop because of poor health, he hoped Guo would follow in his footsteps. But Guo didn’t want to give up his job at first.
However, a terrible sandstorm in 1993 changed Guo’s mind forever. A fast-moving brown wall of sand turned day into night. Guo learned that 18 students were found dead in a river as they tried to get home from school during the sandstorm. “I asked myself then that if we couldn’t protect our farmland or our children, how were we supposed to keep going?” Guo recalled. “That was the moment I decided to join the fight.”
Year after year, Guo and his workmates have continued to plant trees each spring and fall. Thanks to their efforts, a green belt of 8km by 10km has been built. The desert is no longer able to move further south.
The third generation has joined the group, starting with Guo Xi, the grandson of Guo Chaoming. He is making Babusha known to youngsters by using social media. “Babusha was a desert. Now it’s green. I hope more people know about it,” he said.回答问题。

四、任务型阅读

1.What main difficulties did the local people face in the past?
2.What made Guo Wangang decide to fight the desert?
3.What can you infer from Paragraph 5?
4.What can we learn from the three-generation desert-fighters?
5.从文章中找出同义句:Because of his poor health, his father was made to stop, and he expected Guo to continue his work.
6.完成思维导图,每空一词。

2.根据第四段“However, a terrible sandstorm in 1993 changed Guo’s mind forever…18 students were found dead in a river…‘That was the moment I decided to join the fight.’”可知,1993年那场造成18名学生遇难的可怕沙尘暴,让郭万刚下定决心投身治沙。这是原文中的信息,直接提取。
3.根据第五段“Thanks to their efforts, a green belt of 8km by 10km has been built. The desert is no longer able to move further south.”可知,他们修建了绿化带,阻止沙漠向南扩张;由此可以推断出他们多年的辛勤治沙取得了巨大成效。本题属于推理类问答题,写出合理推断结论即可。参考答案为:Their efforts (of planting trees) have paid off.
Never give up when facing difficulties./With persistence and hard work, people can change the desert into an oasis.
5.题干中的“Because of his poor health, his father was made to stop”对应原文第三段中的“When his father was forced to stop because of poor health”;“expected Guo to continue his work”对应原文中的“hoped Guo would follow in his footsteps”。因此,该同义句为第三段中的原话。
6.①根据第一段“In the past, Babusha often suffered from sandstorms”可知,这个地区过去常受沙尘暴侵袭,故填sandstorms。②根据第二段“the vegetation coverage rate has increased to 70 percent from less than 3 percent in the 1980s”可知,植被覆盖率从不足3%提高到70%,是“大幅”增长,故填greatly。③根据第三段“His father, Guo Chaoming, was one of the six men who first began planting trees here in 1981”可知,第一代治沙人“六老汉”中包括郭万刚的父亲,故填father。④根据第五段“The desert is no longer able to move further south”可知,这条绿色林带成功阻止了沙漠南移,固定搭配stop…from doing意为“阻止……做某事”;前面有助动词has,这里是现在完成时,故填stop的过去分词stopped。⑤根据第六段“He is making Babusha known to youngsters by using social media”可知,郭玺通过社交媒体保护、宣传八步沙,故填through。
