Libraries play an important role in our community. Over the past few decades, the way that people read and learn has changed a lot. To meet the growing needs of the public, the local government decided to close the old library and build a new one. The following chart shows the main differences between the Old Town Library and the newly opened New City Library.

Michael Faraday (迈克尔·法拉第) was one of the most famous scientists in history, and is known as “Father of Electricity (电)”. He discovered electromagnetic rotation, benzene, electromagnetic induction, and so on. Without the work of this British scientist, many of the things that we live with, such as computers, fridges, wouldn’t be here.

Faraday’s achievements seem more wonderful when we realize that he had very little schooling. He was born in 1791 in London. His father was too poor to send him to school. So the boy went to work at a bookstore, in that place he became interested in books on science.

One day young Faraday attended a lecture (讲座) given by a famous scientist, Sir Humphry Davy. Faraday took very careful notes at the lecture 演讲. Back at the bookstore he made diagrams (图表) to explain what Davy had said. Then he made the notes and diagrams into a book and sent it to the great scientist. In a letter he also told Davy that he was very interested in science.

Faraday received the excitement of his life when, on 24th December, in 1812, a messenger (邮递员) came to the bookstore with a note that asks him to see Davy the next day. As a result of that visit, Faraday became an assistant (助手) in Davy’s laboratory 实验室. At first, Faraday only washed chemistry glassware 玻璃器皿 and kept the laboratory clean, but later he was given more important work to do. It was in Davy’s laboratory, Faraday received the training that made him to become one of the world’s greatest scientists.

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.

“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty learning foreign languages. On her blog Dr. Ludke wrote, “A listen-and-repeat singing method 方法 can support foreign language learning and open the door for future research in this area.”
